Helicopters are dangerous and unless you are travelling in front 'of the curve' (the operating curve for the speed / elevation at the time) and you have not 'jacked' the controls (seized them through excess G) then you MAY get down without killing yourself. Anything else and it is usually ‘Goodnight Vienna’.
A good friend of mine had a very nice helicopter and was always asking me to accompany him on a flight. As a professional engineer I understand the real problems with these things and always refused. I much preferred going out in one of his Ferraris.
Regrettably, he was putting the thing down on one of his company’s car parks and forgot that the car park sloped UP behind him and wrecked the tail rotor. Thankfully he got away shaken but unhurt from his wrecked helicopter. He never did bother with replacing it.
The helicopter that killed this man, a Raven (Robinson 44 series) is a very nice small helicopter but cannot be considered a commercial craft. I think the wrong choice was made on this occasion, a R66 with its Rolls Royce 3300 turbine would give a much better level of safety: it is course almost twice the price of the R44RII at USD$830,000.
Ran out of luck.
Well hats another of the old Stroesner guard gone. Cant say Im sorry
