Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman said on Thursday that the British government’s position on the Falklands/Malvinas Islands issue “smells too much like petroleum”, revealing that UK’s biggest interest in keeping the invaded archipelago is due to the potential oil findings. Read full article

Nice for Argentine internal consumption but useless internationally.

[1] ”should the United Kingdom accept the United Nation resolutions over Malvinas, it won’t take long to see the islands being administrated by Argentina once again.”
Feb 07th, 2013 - 10:07 pm - Link - Report abuse 0So in [1] we hear that his belief is that if bilateral negotiations happen, the UK is going to suddenly be so dumbfounded by the strength of argentine arguments and faux-history that we'll immediately lose our moral backbone and give them the islands.
[2] “The UN was clear when indicating, in numerous times, that both nations should discuss the matter immediately. Once the UK decides to sit down and talk, it won’t take that long to find a final solution”.
Well in [2] we find that his belief is that bilateral 'negotiations' where he already said the final solution is argentine administration and he'll accept nothing more, and it will not take long.
So from [1] and [2] we learn that the Argentines truly believe that they bring nothing to a negotiation consisting of the UK and themselves, and bringing nothing to the negotiation they will walk out with everything, including full administration of the islands.
Has he been in a car accident that involved a head injury? or is he just some kind of magical negotiator?
What a knob-end.
He's obviously not read the ample coverage in all the media. As a diplomatic effort, this was on a par with George H W Bush puking on Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa. Except that wasn't planned.

Feb 07th, 2013 - 10:21 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The turn of phrase final solution is both abhorrent for a Jew to utter and also gives a sinister overtone to what a lot of people are increasingly viewing as a Nazi like regime.
Also utter hypocrisy from Argentina. Their claims over the Falklands was wavering until they smelt oil.
Its not british oil, its the Falklands oil, clearly this clown will try anything, the british are merely protecting the interests, human rights of The Islanders and THEIR resources from thieving desperate argentine scum who have got a whiff of Petroleum .
Feb 07th, 2013 - 10:22 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The UK has supported the islanders long before oil was found and will be here long after until such a time that The islanders no longer require our expertise or protection when dealing with genocidal bottom feeders with a taste for other peoples lovely jubbly black gold and to strip their human rights...old habits die hard for argentina.

However the hypothetical question I'd like to know is that if we Falkland Islanders stayed on, and then we completely and totally ignored the argentines, and simply carried on in our unique way, that is:
We paid our taxes to FIG, not argentina,
We continued to drive on the right and not on the left,
we continued to obey the laws of the FIG and not argentina,
We carry on electing our own MLA’s,
We carry on making our own laws, we carry on attending international conferences as the Falkland Islands and not as islas malvinas,
we carry on flying our flags etc), we behaved as though these people and their institutions did not exist.
What would or could argentina do..?
Kindest regards from the Falkland Islands

But, it is clear, they want to occupy and have complete sovereignty over those islands. This has already been communicated.
What exactly is it they would talk about?
They want to talk about when we can give them the islands, nothing else. They don't want to negotiate anything as their constitution states any talks can only end in them having the islands, they don't want the people to be able to decide anything for themselves (which hints that they wouldn't have democracy under Argie occupation either...?!) They want to sit and spout lie after lie about what happened and when, call the UK a country of imperialists and then state how they want to force themselves on another population without realising the irony.

This is the new RG tactic/strategy to make out to the world that the UN resolutions, back Argentine sovereignty. Totally not true they ask both parties to talk and come up with a solution. The UN would never want the islanders to be ruled by Argentina against their will, it goes against what the UN stands for..
Feb 08th, 2013 - 08:50 am - Link - Report abuse 0Yet another Sneaky / deceitful RG tactic.
The referendum will take place, matters not whether they recognise it, it is not for their benefit it is for the benefit of the Islanders.
Feb 08th, 2013 - 09:17 am - Link - Report abuse 0They will go back to the UN and no doubt try to have it declared invalid and illegal.
The usual states will come on side with them, those with similiar sovereignty problems and old imperial axes to grind, but the vast majority, will see it for what it is, a legal excercise of democratic process as enshrined within the charter.
I for one am looking forward to seeing it? the Argentine Ambasssador to the UN lecturing the members on the meaning of Article 1:2. Trying to convince them, that in fact there are cases, where Human Rights only apply to some and not others. He might even, just might, list those people. It would be poor tactics to say it is only the Falkland Islanders who do not have those rights. God forbid, they would leave themself open to accusations of bias and discrimination.
It is truly astounding that they have no idea how this is going to make them look to the rest of the world, what is even more astounding is, they actually believe what they are saying.
@50 Bovis call the UK a country of imperialists

'Lords and Commons will visit us in July what hurts and what doesn't
Feb 08th, 2013 - 10:27 am - Link - Report abuse 0Filmus referred to the Declaration of Ushuaia
London.-the Frente para la Victoria national Senator Daniel Filmus said in London that the vindication of the sovereignty of our country over the Malvinas Islands is a matter not of Government but of the Argentine people and, therefore, a State policy: there isn't a party that is can claim the defence of the Falklands; all leaders will respond that sovereignty is not negotiable.
The Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee recalled that all forces represented at the Congress endorsed the Declaration of Ushuaia, which ratifies the Argentine sovereignty over the Islands, and that repudiates the British militarist position and the exploration and exploitation of natural resources in the South Atlantic. Guillermo Carmona - head Commission of relations outside of Deputies--highlighted the rally held on Tuesday with members of the Chambers of the Lords and the common British. There, they agreed that these visit Buenos Aires in July and Argentine legislators to travel to London in November. Does not meet the expectations of a dialogue between the ministries of Foreign Affairs, but it is a step forward, he said. And it was considered that the legislators of both countries can help build an agenda to future that allows achieving effective bilateral negotiations and achieve concrete agreements. Jeremy Corbyn (British Labour Party) also leaned through negotiation: there must be a solution to the conflict and should be through dialogue....'

Yes but they have form on this.. 1982. So far as the Argentine people were concerned they had won. It was a done deal. The British wouldn't come. Then the British did come but it was okay because the British got their arses kicked. The Argentines were winning and winning and winning. They just kept on winning and then one day, totally unexpected, totally and inexplicably. They lost.
So accusing others of doing exactly what they are doing is standard practice. Lying and theiving are a way of life and a cultural more. Racism is good, it is applauded in Malvinista Land. Falkland Islanders are not the same as other Latin Americans so they must be driven out, persecuted, threatened, invaded, destroyed.
Only they can't do that becase Mother is watching very closely, protecting. She was a little negligent in 1982, took her eye off the ball but not today. How do you think the rabid nazis in Argentina must feel about that? Their mouths are frothing, their eyes are bulging and Timerman's weasel words must be filling them with hope and great expectation. They are winning. Again. They think they are winning. Again. Even as their country dilapidates around them, KFC, Timerman, the whole Argentine government is telling them what they want to hear, whispering beautiful things, nurturing this national obsession and fleecing Argentina whilst the people aren't looking.
They aren't getting the Falkland Islands and their government knows it. The people don't.
So how much petroleum was ther in 1776 when the British first settled ?
Feb 08th, 2013 - 11:33 am - Link - Report abuse 0How much petroleum was there in 1833 when the British finally settled on a permanent basis ?
How much petroleum was there in 1849 whe the UK and Argentina signed the Act of Settlement ?
How much petroleum was there in the 1950's when Peron started his Malvinas campaign ?
How much petroleum was there in 1982 when Argentina invaded and got their asses kicked ?
The answer to all of the above of course is none (well I guess it was there, but nobody knew even what it was in the earlier days, and didn't know it was there later).
So just another line of bull**** designed to take the concentrated stare off fundamental human rights and self determination......and that loverly referendum that looks like it might sink Tinman.

I'm still unsure about what Timmerghoul is going to say or do in negotiations that's going to be so powerful that it makes the UK lose any moral or ethical backbone that we've ever had?
Feb 08th, 2013 - 12:35 pm - Link - Report abuse 0How's he going to make us negotiate away someone else's land? He seems quite convinced he can, but as a failed journalist and failed politician and prolific usurer I'm personally not sure what would happen in bilateral negotiations, given that he's bringing sod all to the table.
From what I remember about negotiation, this would be a distributive negotiation (zero-sum), with one party bringing nothing and the other party giving away everything. This win-lose scenario isn't dependent on anything that Argentina brings to the table, because they have nothing.
The only factor determining the outcome would therefore be what is said or done in the actual negotiation. So what is he going to say or do that is so powerful?
Also the ZOPA (zone of possible agreement) for the UK in 1970s has changed dramatically, it is now is 'whatever the islanders want goes', for the Islanders it is 'whatever the referendum says' and for Argentina it is 'we want absolute sovereignty'
This isn't a negotiation.
The three main strategies for getting someone to the table in the first place: Offer Incentives; Put a price on the Status Quo; and Enlist Support. Well, Argentina doesn't really have anything anyone needs, and given their recent behaviour have taken away everything making the islanders self-sufficient to many extents. The cost of not negotiating is not high, because we don't really have a huge amount of trade with Argentina and we don't trust them. Enlisting support has failed for Argentina, because they thought the UN security council would do something and they didn't.
.... and what they forget is that no-one trusts them, because their culture fundamentally promotes going back on agreements and treaties.
I really don't understand Timmerghoul.

@72 Do you not get the impression that the Argentines are completely and utterly forgetful of the fact they caused a war, and in turn poisoned the minds of most british towards them? In one of your articles Alessandro Betts talks of rapprochement with the islanders, as if anyone there is going to forget him and his ways.

Steeling the natural resourses from Argentina they claim.
Feb 09th, 2013 - 11:23 am - Link - Report abuse 0We are not stupid . We Islanders have always know that the dispute has never been really over implanted people or British trying to steel the Falklands but over OIL . We have known for a very, Very long time that the Greedy Argentines took control of the coast line of their Country because they knew almost 150 years ago that one day this area would be rich in the resources extracted from or under the seas of the South Atlantic. Nearly all wars and disputes of soveriegnty have started either from Religeon or Oil.
Sorry Argentina but as it happens this is our patch and you will never get your hands on it in any legal form anytime soon or indeed in the very distant future.
The Falklands are just beginning a period of wealth that will cement our very existance. While Argentina has reached the top of their mountain and are now falling back down again and they need any resourse they can get their hands on. Sorry but what belongs to the Falklads is for it's people.

Then what? Are you planing to buy a house close to the Dick’s retirement house in France?
You are living a illusion that will never materialised at least for the whole islander population maybe you have personal interest involved in the oil stuff and the rest what?
