Known as the ‘Fortress of the Sea’, HMS Edinburgh is the largest and the last Type 42 destroyer to serve in the Royal Navy. She finished her six month tour of the South Atlantic Islands this week and is due to be decommissioned in June, but before heading north again Falkland Islands residents were given the opportunity to have a peek on board. Feb 09th, 2013 - 11:48 am - Link - Report abuse 0But I thought Uruguay supported Argentina over the Falklands so therefore would not allow a UK military ship into port.
It looks like Uruguay doesn't really support Argentina over the Falklands at all. Here's what Uruguay have sanctioned lately:
- Free trade between the two countries
- Chamber of Commerce visit to the Falklands
- Cargo flights between the countries
- Uruguayan politicians attending to observe the referendum
- British war ships - in the role of defence of the islands- visiting Montevideo port
It's the same as the Bloggs family's support for Arsenal Football Club. We wear the rip-off T-shirts but the club has received no actual support from us at all.
Is a type 23 of less capability than a type 42?
Feb 09th, 2013 - 12:21 pm - Link - Report abuse 0If so replacing a type 45 with a type 42 and then a type 23 means we are de-militarising the South Atlantic, right?
We are obviously trying to relieve the frosty atmosphere by bringing in an icebreaker
Feb 09th, 2013 - 12:25 pm - Link - Report abuse 0@4 different capabilities just as dangerous, probably more suited to fookin off the Rg navy (dont laugh) with her Harpoon missles.
Feb 09th, 2013 - 12:56 pm - Link - Report abuse 0HMS Edinburgh fair winds and following seas old girl
The Type 42 Destroyer has been replaced by the larger Type 45, the first of its class was commissioned in July 2009. The Type 23 is a Frigate not a Destroyer and I believe that 13 of this class is serving with the Royal Navy. For the role in the South Atlantic, it appears that the British Admiralty believes that the Type 23 Frigate can perform the functions of the Type 42 Destroyer. The Argentines have no comparable surface ship.
Feb 09th, 2013 - 01:40 pm - Link - Report abuse 0It should be noted by objective observers - a point that has been seconded by many British officers who fought in the Falklands War - that the Argentine Air Force was courageous and flew the equivilant of suicide missions and that many of the their Exocets were hits or near misses but failed to explode. (This is an entirely different discussion.) Had these missiles achieved their desired effect, the outcome may have been different. Today the Argentine air assets are degraded and the British counter-air defense assets improved.
@4 Amazingly, the Type 23 frigate is bigger than the Type 42 destroyer. It's longer, wider, deeper and weighs more. And, as slattzzz says, it carries the Harpoon anti-ship missiles. In addition to Sea Wolf anti-air missiles and anti-submarine torpedoes. They carry the same main gun and armed helicopter. The Type 23 may also have four times as many light weapons.
Feb 09th, 2013 - 01:52 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The Type 23 is a far more capable ship and is several generations newer than the 42's. I have served on both, 4 years on a 23 and 2 years on a 42.
Feb 09th, 2013 - 02:05 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The Type 23 was always designed to function in deep water as a submarine hunter however it has a very sophisticated air defense in the form of Sea Wolf. It is also fitted with Harpoon for ship attack and the ubiquitous 4'5 gun.
The Type 23 was the first of the stealth class of RN ships effectively and is very difficult to detect due to how quite it is and its special surfaces.
Essentially in a fight between a 23 and a 42, the 23 wins every time.
The 23's are also a far nicer place to live for sailors. The 42's were extremely loud, hot confined ships and the 23's are virtually silent even in cruising stations and far, far nicer to live in.
When we did NATO training, the Type 23 proved so good at winning we were often asked to sit out of exercises involving other nations.
@9 Only had 42's xect 5 years on York 3 on Gloucester, can't really compare as the only time I went on a 23 was a call rould lol. Couldn't beat 22 batch 3's for accomodation imo
Feb 09th, 2013 - 02:47 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Yeah 22's were awesome bits of kit but by all accounts ferociously expensive to run.
Feb 09th, 2013 - 03:00 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The 45's looks absolutely lethal. I have seen a few in pompey and they are very big for their class.
@11 in pompey july for reunion and got a call round on Diamond if she's in
Feb 09th, 2013 - 03:09 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Sounds good! I live just outside of pompey. I left the mob and moved to my home city (Stoke) and then through a job offer returned to pompey...

1 reality check
It is sad to see another fine ship completing it's last tour and being de-commisioned. So, as you have already said, a job well done. The Royal Navy, even though it is too small, is THE BEST in the world and the crew should be proud of the service they have done. God speed.
@16 correct the crew should rightly be proud
Feb 09th, 2013 - 05:30 pm - Link - Report abuse 0@16 HMS Edinburgh. Fortress of the Sea. You have represented Britain admirably. You have protected. To the crew: Every day of your service has been exemplary. You have done your duty. And more. In the best traditions of the Royal Navy. Britain is proud of every one of you. Feb 09th, 2013 - 07:02 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Christ they are a danger to international navigation, should not be allowed to put to sea without supervision. Slatzzz, isn't there some maritime organisation that posts maritime warnings? Can see it now, signal to all vessels in the South Atlantic, Be aware ARA Rust bucket, just put to sea, all vessels advised be prepared to offer assistance.
Feb 09th, 2013 - 07:11 pm - Link - Report abuse 0@24 yep there is mate navigational warnings are signalled all the time (every 24 hours) and most of them have rgenweener attached to them

I hope you're having a good weekend.
Marcos- Your submarines cannot dive- to dangerous as they are in such poor maintenance and most of your ocean going ships dare not leave the sight of land as due to the poor state of safety equipment onboard the officers fear lawsuits from the sailors families if there is an accident.
Feb 10th, 2013 - 01:00 am - Link - Report abuse 0None have test fired a missile system for several years - which means those missile systems are unrelaible and dangerous for the ARA let alone anyone else!
Yes the RN does decommission ships when they need to be replaced. It then sells them for scrap or use as a target.
Your famous navy - what does it do?
It lets them roll over and sink in the naval base!!!!!!!!!!!

It makes one think that the people attracted to trolling, both privately and professionally (La Campora), are of the 'attention-whore' variety.
They seem to say anything to elicit a response. I thought that because of their fee-schedule, no response=no pay.
However, unless they employ types like Sussie to throw up flak to put legitimate discussion into disarray, making refuting the Argie message too difficult and time-intensive, I would say that he is an Independent looking for attention.
PH is simply too emotionally damaged to behave in any normal manner, but he does follow the La Campora-Peronist-Nacionalista, party-line.
