Moody's Investors Service on Friday cut the United Kingdom's credit rating to Aa1 from AAA for the first time since 1978, citing weakness in the nation's medium-term growth outlook that it now expects to extend for a number of years. Read full article

An article about a European Queendom’s economy being down rated by a moody American Company…..
And.....
An article about an old Malvinas ship, cruising from America to Ireland with Canadian rats as only passengers…….
Yet not a single word about the III Africa-South America (ASA) Summit, just ended in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.....
On this III Summit, attended by many South-American and African presidents, it was decided to integrate Central America & the Caribbean to the organization…..
And, I nearly forgot,……..:
The 54 member Countries of the African Union decided, in unison, to recognize “Argentina’s legitimate sovereignty rights over the Malvinas, Georgias & Sandwich del Sur Islands, including all the adjacent maritime territories”
http://www.pagina12.com.ar/diario/elpais/1-214476-2013-02-23.html
This would never happen in a serious South-Atlantic News Agency….

This downgrading was inevitable, as I mentioned in posts before. It won't make much difference and the credit rating is enviable to most countries but it does signify that the tough times are far from over.

Feb 23rd, 2013 - 09:14 am - Link - Report abuse 0Nothing in this article an Africa-South America summit.
Nothing in this article about the African Union.
Nothing in this article about an old Malvinas ship.
What was in the article?
The UK had a ratings downgrade by a ratings agency..... sound familiar to anyone?
No wonder Think was so quick to comment.
Recent Argentine downgrades:
Nov 2012 - Fitch - 3 notches to CC
Oct 2012 - Standards and Poor - 1 notch to B-
And if Moody's uses the word 'negative' much more for Argentina it might have to pay a licensing fee.
So Argentina gets a FAIL for economic management. Nothing if not consistent.
And Think; FAIL. You too are very consistent. Keep it up!
Damn! I still can't bring myself to chuckle at people exhibiting such gross mental retardation.
Oh btw UK time to strip back the nanny and welfare state. It's verging on the ridiculous.
Oh well, I will have to stop eating beluga caviar and substitute lumpfish instead. Such are the trials of life.

Feb 23rd, 2013 - 11:46 am - Link - Report abuse 0Did not I tell you idiots that UK is going slowly to the drains?
Financial Armageddon process had started borrowing cost for UK will increase and increase and the idiots will start with the old formula of “to convince the market” that the can pay.
Well the market already know that UK cannot pay and they will ask for more austerity measures to secure cash flow to their accounts until the last drop of blood is sucked.
Then as usual they will provide a good restructuring debt plan (for them of course) where all remain British assets will be bought as cheap as possible and in exchange UK will get more debt.
@ ElaineB
I like this paragraph as a sample of huge ignorance...
“It won't make much difference and the credit rating is enviable to most countries but it does signify that the tough times are far from over.”
UK tough times have not even started yet.
UK, as always happen in this situations, will suffer several years to come of more cuts, recessions and will end like Iceland if keep going like this.
Muahahaha! :-)
Feb 23rd, 2013 - 11:55 am - Link - Report abuse 0@10 Yes, in part true but it will never be in the economic pit equivalent to Argentina. You are talking worlds apart. You are way off with your analogy of Iceland.
Feb 23rd, 2013 - 12:02 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The reason for the long overdue downgrade was that the measures the government are taking are too slow to take effect and growth is flatlined. It hardly effected the markets and will not effect the ability to borrow at rates CFKC would salivate over. In short, it was a warning to speed up a little.
@5 Yes, cuts in welfare are gradually being undertaken but it is a slow and difficult process. Too quickly would send too many people into immediate poverty and no civilised country wants that. It is more a case of weaning people off the state. It is a fine line to walk in a country that wants to take care of the disadvantaged but can no longer tolerate the people abusing the system.

Feb 23rd, 2013 - 12:41 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Wow those news totally blew me away, I was convinced Timerman was useless but he really puled off a coup here. He now has all Latin American, Caribbean, (CELAC) and African countries signed up. Looks like the Brits either don't care (and I can see why, militarily the Argies are no threat) or their foreign affairs office was asleep at the wheel. It certainly is not a good look when so many countries are against you on an issue like sovereignty. The Declaración de Malabo was a real coup.......Maybe like an apprentice Tierman is learning on the job. Look out Brits he may be coming to the EU next.
#13 Why should we care? We don't care what anyone thinks, not Europe, the US or anyone. When Timerman convinces the Falkland Islanders they should welcome Argentina he will be getting somewhere. Until then Argentina remains stuffed. The Falkland Islanders will decide, its called self determination. Timerman is afraid to go to the IJC because Argentina has no valid claim despite all the lying propaganda. If countries could claim territory purely on the basis of being somewhat 'close' to somewhere else the whole world would dissolve into chaos.

An argie wanker making it up as it goes along. Nothing new there!
ASA's Summit declarations have always been very careful to insist on compliance with the UN Charter. Something that latam declarations never do as that would destroy argieland's claims in a second!
@10 I feel quite sorry for you. It must be difficult to be so brainless. Where do you keep the note that reminds you which hand to use to wipe your arse? To help you make a comparison Moodys rates argieland as B3, S&P rates it as B- and Fitch rates it as CC. To put these ratings into context, B3 means highly speculative. B- means highly speculative. CC means substantial risks, extremely speculative and in default with little prospect for recovery. Good, eh? As a matter of interest, argieland's rating is 14 grades BELOW that of the UK. I think you can safely assume that argieland has already passed through the drains and is in the sewage works.

Britain in the ’80 and ’90 was quite similar to Argentina 2001 (in terms of poverty) when got Black Wednesday just a minor incident compared with what is going to be financial Armageddon this time in UK was pretty tough for Britons in UK.
All street of London full of people asking for money, homeless, people committing suicide because couldn’t afford to pay their debt, middle class families ended up in the streets, etc, etc.

2-Your comparison with Argentina is at least hilarious because Argentina is a rich country and can survive by it own means. And as you sure know Argentina is out of the borrowing market since 2001 so she can send to hell the entire international financial system and still doing pretty well.
But fore UK that will be death and you will not even be able to afford to import basic food like Iceland when collapsed.
My analogy with Iceland is not mine otherwise was made by financial speculators like Jim Rogers and George Soros.
Who said that UK is like Iceland but with more problems and a bigger baking system.

Dany Berger you seem to be living to see the UK fail rather than enjoying your life and really making a difference in your own country. A sad way to be, always worrying what others are doing when massive problems exist in your own country. But then its always easier criticising others than oneself.
Feb 23rd, 2013 - 03:29 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Concentrate on yourself Dany and pull yourself up regardless of what others are doing and don't ever forget how lucky Argentina is to have all it has. More than 10 trillions US dollars is the debt of Britain (internal or public debt plus external debt) do you know what that means? I guess you don’t.
Argentina 2001 will be a joke compared to what would be the financial disaster in UK. Capital will fly away like birds, unemployment will rise to historic record levels, business will collapse one after another and consumption will plunge as stone into water.
Ok you can say that cannot happen but you were telling over and over that UK will never lose its AAA rating do you remember?

Well I’m German and Argentina where I live now is just fine compared with some pig countries including Britain and my country of birth has still AAA and still and army and yours?
What happen don’t you like that others criticise your country as you normally do to others?
The effect is only negligible because we were one of the very few countries left with a AAA/Aaa rating though - also Moody's are clear that they've put the country on stable outlook because of the coalitions political will to stick to their plans - that a relaxation of those plans would see further downgrade. So there will be no negative effect as markets perceive the UK to be doing the right thing and believe that they will stick to their plan.
Feb 23rd, 2013 - 06:42 pm - Link - Report abuse 0It's very doubtful that less austerity would have made any meaningful difference to growth and ultimately the main purpose of growth is to generate employment which has been generated despite the weak reported growth figures. In case you have trouble with the arithmetic, that's 234,300 personnel. That makes the German army around 28% the size of the British army. In case, you're wondering the Luftwaffe is half the size of the RAF. The German navy is equally bereft! Incidentally, parts of Britain's army and air force are still occupying Germany. Is that why you ran away? Don't be concerned. We'll be occupying argieland soon!
Shall I remind you of some history? Avro Lancaster, Vickers Wellington, Avro Manchester, Handley Page Halifax, Short Stirling, De Havilland Mosquito, Hawker Hurricane, Supermarine Spitfire, Gloster Meteor. This is the first time you Argentines have assembled together such a large number of countries to back you up. Keep in mind the UN is changing and more and more of these supporters will get into the UN security council.
Also keep in mind that ONE day (this is a LONG game after all) your countrymen may elect a competent government which theoretically could turn your dogs breakfast of a country into a world power. Yes this could happen. In fact long ago you were the 7th richest economy. So lets add this up......
In 30 or 40 yrs from now you COULD be a world power with the support of a majority of governments on the Falklands issue, with a powerfull and proffesional military. It could happen, but wait there's more.........
The US and the Eurozone by then could have been decimated by their inability to reign in spending and balance their budgets, there could have been a colapse in their Fiat currencies and Russia (a supporter) could be the new super power in Europe also China (another supporter) could be the dominating world super power. Sounds too far fetched.... Well yes but genetically modified pigs could fly, right?

26. Well, I think we will have to applaud Argentina's show of altruism. It is about time a major S.A. player got involved in Africa. Europe, (including Britain) should bow out and leave it to Argentina to show the dark continent how to organise itself with their shining example of political fairness and success.

The answer has been given by Argentina - come to us and welcome.
Just as the USA, in the 19/20th century was asking for the poor huddled masses to start a new life on their shores, Argentina could take over the baton and create a Golden Age of prosperity for all..
In other words, in Victorian parlance, take up the white man's burden.
Well done and thought out by the saviours of mankind the Blessed Christina and Saint Timerman.

26. We recognize the legitimate rights of the Argentine Republic in the sovereignty dispute over the Malvinas Islands, South Georgias and South Sandwich Islands, and the surrounding maritime areas, and urge the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to resume negotiations with the Argentine Republic in order to find, as soon as possible, a fair, peaceful and definitive solution to the dispute, in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the United Nations and other regional and international organizations.
It is absolutely perfect. This is exactly what I think too. Indeed it is what most countries think.
We recognize the legitimate rights of the Argentine Republic in the sovereignty dispute over the Malvinas Islands, South Georgias and South Sandwich Islands, and the surrounding maritime areas
Emphasis on the LEGITIMATE RIGHTS. If they aren't legitimate then there are no rights. So that rules out...... well all those areas.
Tick for the United Kingdom.
They urge the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to resume negotiations with the Argentine Republic in order to find, as soon as possible, a fair, peaceful and definitive solution to the dispute
Last time I checked it was Argentina that would not meet to discuss this issue. The UK has always been peaceful about this issue.
Another tick for the United Kingdom.
in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the United Nations
Well as all UN resolutions are subordinate to the UN Charter, then all these countries just reaffirmed self-determination as set out in Chapter 1, Article 1, Part 2.
Another tick for the United Kingdom.
Actually there doesn't seem to be anything new here.... so why are so many Argentines so excited?
Yep deffo sinking ship, only Canada and Germany hold AAA so my maths tells me that the rest of the world must be below that. Maybe it's time to pump some of our £10 billion foreign aid yearly budget into some nice new corvettes.

Feb 24th, 2013 - 10:17 pm - Link - Report abuse 0You may be correct BUT as you will be in disaster mode a L-O-N-G time before us -if at all -you can let us know how it feels.
By the way, the Falklands will still be there having a quiet chuckle at your predicament.
#45 UK is not finished with Argentina yet. You are right 2013 will be a disaster for Argentina. Already your loans have been cut off by USA and UK. You are seen as a pariah state for cosying up to Iran, Castro and Chavez. The Peso is sinking, inflation is rocketing, strikes will cripple your country and KFC will fall. You will realise in a few days that you will never ever get your hands on our Falkland Islands and you will scream, weep and whinge as only Argentineans can

Feb 25th, 2013 - 10:36 am - Link - Report abuse 0Mmmm. So what would YOU do when a Trident and two or three T45s turn up off your coast after TMBOA is stupid enough to TRY another invasion?
Let me tell you shall I?
1) shit yourself;
2) cry 'I'm going to die';
3) blame TMBOA because it wasn't your fault;
4) what you will not do is go and fight for your country, will you?
Malvanistas and shit: nothing to pick between them.
The FTSE is up and GBP is trading in the same range as prior to the Moody downgrade.
Feb 25th, 2013 - 02:13 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The markets had factored this in long ago.
UK: you have got to get the non-existent poverty out of the debate and butcher the nanny state.
Be concerned if you spiral to argentinas rating :))
