“All these actions infringe not only the legitimate rights of the Argentines, but also of the majority of countries and peoples of South America”, concluded Senator Filmus

How does it “Infringe the legitimate rights of the majority of countries and peoples of South America” ????

    Well lets see.
The draft resolution rejects the referendum indicating it has “no sustain or validity in International Law since it is contrary to the UN General Assembly and UN Decolonization Committee resolutions”.
These resolutions are advisements and not compulsary, the UN has already indicated that the UK is not in conflict with any UN resolutions. Resolutions issued by the UN Security Council are the only ones that are binding
So here we go again with more propaganda for consumption by the Argentine masses.
As for Esquivel, a lawyer versed in International law would make him look like a fool

Excellent article by the Nobel Peace Prize, Perez Esquivel

Pérez Esquivel: “The referéndun has no legitimacy whatsoever”

The Nobel Peace Prize sent a letter to Prime Minister of Britain, David Cameron, in which he expressed his opposition to the consultation convened by kelpers on 10 and 11 March, which called illegitimate “no only because it is implanted British population from the expulsion of the Argentine authorities in the nineteenth century. But also because the UN decided not fruition. ”

Adolfo Perez Esquivel added that “everyone knows that the result of this referendum does not alter the legal and historical Malvinas Islands”, and stresses that they “will remain a British colony and the settlers will remain British.”

“Mr David Cameron, the force does not entitle let alone when seeking to justify the military base in the islands, resolutions and treaties violating demilitarization and nonproliferation of nuclear weapons in the South Atlantic, endangering British citizens Islands and the mainland, ”remarked the leader.

Pérez Esquivel with colleagues from different countries claimed the British prime minister to open a dialogue to resolve the sovereignty of the islands.

This is all grandstanding to distract from the FI referendum.

During the FI referendum, I think CFK is going to make a “glorious” very “solemn” speech. It will either be from the Casa Rosada with millions of people crowding the Plaza de Mayo or it will be a 4 hour special on TV. It will be a very “solemn” event and she will look very beautiful. The speech will “indisputably” negate any outcome of the FI referendum, at least in the minds of the Argentinian masses.

She will also take the opportunity to cover the embarassment of her absence from the funeral of her “friend for eternity”. Only this “solemn” necessity of disputing this “egregious” assault on beloved Argentina's “sacred” sovereignty could have kept her away from the funeral. She had to be with the Argentinian people at this time.

    Interesting Brit comment:

“I´d be sympathetic to those who insist that the Falklands are British and will remain so, and that the people of the islands have the right to decide their own future, were it not for the selective application of this principle.

As the author says, how come the Falklanders have this right but not the Chagos islanders? The British sold them down the river. They were thrown out of their own homes and given 24 hours to pack their belongings, and their dogs and cattle were shot. The people were then dumped in Mauritius and their lands turned into an aircraft carrier for the USA and for torture prisons like Gitmo.

The British govts from Harold Wilson onwards denied all this of course, but the truth came out and the case of the Islanders went to the High Court and they ”won“ and were supposed to be compensated. Guess what happened? The British govt, which cares so much for the little people, used its Royal prerogative to ignore the ruling. How low can you get?

So, I don´t buy into all this claptrap about ”let them determine their own future”.

This is typical British hypocrisy. Just like your love of some dictators (Apartheid, Pinochet, Saudis, Bahrain, Uzbekistan etc. etc.) but at the same bringing democracy to others at the point of the gun.

What was it that Shakespeare said about Albion?

All very well to ramble on about 'British Hypocracy' under Wilson, etc., 50 years ago, or Chagos Islands, another set of circumstances, but you have NO argument to deny the Falklanders their rights as inhabitants or their right to hold a Referendum as an exercise of their Self-Determination.

Nor do you have any plausible reason not to recognise it.

When are Argentina going to withdraw the right to self-determination from implanted populations?

At the next Argentine elections will only those with ancestors pre-dating 1492 be allowed to vote?

The Falklands would end up a 0:0 tie as there was nobody there in 1492....LOL.

Massive hypocrisy on a gobsmacking scale.

At least Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Adoldfo Pérez Esquivel has the sense to state that in the 'nineteenth century' (staying away from the date 1833 deliberatley) the 'Authorities' were expelled from the islands.

He knows the popular lie about the Argentine 'population' being expelled is just that, - A. Lie.

    @11 Marcos

You keep posting that 'interesting' British comment, yet you post this all the time with no reference to back it up.

It is in fact your opinion, no one else's, and while you are entitled to your opinion, your constant reposting of this 'comment' without references, just shows you up for the idiot you are.

Maybe some of your La Campora Troll friends will congratulate you for posting it, but it is meaningless without reference.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. In my opinion Argentina is a fascist state that wants to build a South American Empire.

If you somehow 'got' the Falklands, you would then start trying to steal your neighbours land under the same erroneous pretext of 'territorial integrity'. Then you would steal Chile, Paraguay, Bolivia, Brazil, Uruguay and on and on, until your 'empire' was achieved.

The problem with Argentina's colonial ambitions is that your country is a basketcase that constantly fails. You are like the reverse of King Midas. Whatever he touched turned to gold. Whatever Argentina touches turns to dross.

So you Argentines will continue to comfort yourselves with the belief in your greater Argentine empire, while your neighbours laugh at your incompetence at being able to even organise the most simple of tasks, let alone build something.

Argentina's riches are plundered by your politicians, and all they have to do is wave the mythical Malvinas in your faces, and you all stand up and applaud them, and they laugh all the way to the bank about how stupid the populace is, to let them get away with it so easily.

If you actually concentrated on Argentina and sorting out its problems, you would all be a happier place.

Argentine congress having to hold an emergency meeting! They've known about the referendum for over a year! LMFAO!

Talk about cheap (really cheap in this case) political stunt.

The world is laughing at you, pathetic Argentina and its pathetic government.

As Argentina features specifically in the preamble of the question it has as much right to reject the result as the FIG has to ask it. That is to say both are entirely within their rights (but not necessarily right politically), it being only a consultative Referendum.

    @17 DoD

Argentina can do whatever it likes, but the international community recognises the referendum.

So like all your La Campora Trolls, why don't you go and sulk in a corner mumbling “it's not fair” under your breath.

The reaction of Argentina to the referendum is great though. If Argentina had ignored it from the beginning, it would've still gone ahead, but hardly anyone in the world would've noticed it was happening.

But all the histrionics, and crying, and begging, and crawling that Argentina has done to try and discredit the referendum ensures that it is getting maximum media coverage.

The icing on this cake, is of course, that the more Argentina tries to 'diss' the referendum and the people of the Falklands, the more the world can see that Argentina is last country on earth that should be allowed anywhere near the Falklands.

Their blatant and arrogant dismissal of the people of the Falklands; their refusal to acknowledge that the Falklanders are people or that they exist; their saying that some human beings have human rights but others don't, and so on and so forth has proved to the world that Argentina wouldn't respect the rights of the Islanders at all.

Well done, Cristina and Timerman. Well done indeed.

By your antics you have advertised their expressing of their self-determination, as laid out in the UN Charter AND in UNGA resolution 1514 which states the UN is:

Convinced that ALL peoples have an inalienable right to complete freedom, the exercise of their sovereignty and the integrity of their national territory.

    and

Immediate steps shall be taken, in Trust and Non-Self-Governing Territories or ALL other territories which have not yet attained independence, to transfer ALL powers to the peoples of those territories, without ANY conditions or reservations, in accordance with THEIR freely expressed will and desire, without any distinction as to race, creed or colour, in order to enable them to enjoy complete independence and freedom.

From what we see, and know, Argentina is a potentially rich country wracked by a whole gamut of serious defficiencies and problems. Quite funny this. Thank you to argieland. By calling a special session, you have adequately displayed how frightened you are of the Islanders and their referendum! Would the British Parliament do such a thing? And publicise it? As for Perez Esquivel, what a numpty. A pacifist, art painter and sculptor. Legal qualifications - nil. As a pacifist, I wonder how he feels about the United Provinces military invasions and attempted theft of British territory.
@5 Your usual garbage, I see. Will a day come when you have something useful to say? So Perez Esquivel spouts the party line. So what? Has it ever occurred to him, or you, that the UN has no jurisdiction?
@11 Your usual drivel. Don't you ever get tired of looking a fool? But then you don't understand the law that applies. Is there any argie that can accept that the law isn't what they want it to be? The Chagos Archipelago was owned by a Mauritian company. It was used for growing coconuts. All the occupants were contract workers for the Mauritian company. They never owned anything. They were properly the responsibility of the Mauritian company. Who abandoned them when Britain bought the archipelago. No rights to anything. But at least Britain had the responsibility to give the Mauritian government money to resettle them. Unsurprisingly, the Mauritian government stole the money. Oh, I get it, that's okay because that's what argie governments do.

Lots in today's Sunday Times about Venezuala and Chavez (you have to pay to access it online, so there won't be many Argentinians reading it, not with the dollar clamp). What struck me was the parallels between Chavez's policies and those CFK is introducing in Argentina, such as politicising the judiciary. Of course, CFK doesn't have the oil revenues to bribe the electorate with, but the article was saying that Chavez's policies have instilled a culture in Venezuala that says individual wealth is wrong and it is ok to rob from the rich if you are poor. As a result, Venezuala currently enjoys the second highest murder rate in the world.

I noticed that Macri said the other day that he doesn't want to see Chavez-like policies increased in Argentina. I fear for the population if CFK ignores him.

If I was living in theFalklands, even if I was of Argentinian descent, there is no way I'd be interested in being part of the mess there.

Argentine politicians...what a pathetic bunch of clowns. A country with 40 million people, produces such first class fools and wants to be treated seriously by the world. How sad.

In contrast, the Falkland Islands with just 3000 people, have political representatives on its Legislative Council that consistently come across as dignified, thoughtful and responsible people, who are really concerned about the people they represent.

OT but typical of Rg thugs er politicians

With national inflation seen by private economists at 30 percent this year and global food demand rising, Argentina limits wheat and corn exports to ensure ample domestic supplies.

But farmers say this policy hurts their profits and have shifted toward planting barley, which is not subject to the curbs. While Argentine barley cultivation is soaring, the wheat crop is forecast at 9.4 million tons this season - way under the 2011/12 crop year’s 14.1 million tons.

Domestic Commerce Secretary Guillermo Moreno, feared by business as chief enforcer of the government’s frequent market interventions, told exporters this week that further growth in barley farming at the expense of wheat would not be tolerated.

“He said that if farmers keep growing barley instead of wheat he will increase export taxes for barley and curb exports,” said an industry source who was at the Wednesday night meeting.

“It is a threat. If wheat plantings keep falling, he will go after the substitute crop, whatever it may be,” said the source, who asked to remain anonymous. “But the real issue is the policy model, because the more intervention there is in the wheat market, the less acreage he will get from farmers.”

The referendum only confirms what Argentina is saying, that the islanders are British and not a distinct people with the right to self-determination.
So please voting YES, Argentina thus raise the result to the UN as a very strong argument to be that you can not British implanted and can never decide on the sovereignty of the territory!

All this fuss from Argentina over a referendum that is illegal, a people that don’t exist and don’t have any rights anyway, doesn’t really add up.

I still get a laugh from the descendants of the Conquistadors calling them an “Implanted population”.

The real effect of this vote has been to force Argentina to change its argument to the rest of the world from “they don’t care about being British” to, “doesn’t matter what they want, they have no rights”.

Thanks to Argentina the rest of the world now knows they exist, and will soon know what they want, and is also now hearing the truth about the history of the region.

Another victory like this for Argentine diplomacy and their cause will be lost forever.

    Strange argument.
Much of the new world was implanted, with Europeans colonists forcing out or killing the native inhabitants. Argentina is a prime example of this. The difference is the Falkland Islands had no natives, so the people who live their now cannot be implanted in the same way as the people in Argentina, if at all.
If the implanted population of Argentina have the right to self-determination, the same right must apply to the Falkland Islanders, it's that simple.

Please tell me how this can be wrong?

@ Xavier 'You alone are put in a trap, and now have no authority to demand sovereignty'

Lol, have you been sleeping? The people of the Falkland Island's have sovereignty.

There are some bewilderingly stupid posts on this thread. Like calling the people of the Falkland Island's a 'implanted population' well thicko's what is Argentina? The only difference between the people of the Falkland Islands moved to the island when it was uninhabited, have been there longer than Argentina has been a country and they didn't slaughter the natives like Argentina has done and continues too. Argentina is a country with despicable human rights within its own boarders and tries to lecture others on implanted populations? You really couldn't make that level of stupidity up.

It's a bit like the special session from Argentine lawmakers, Argentina can reject anything it likes, however its rejection is utterly worthless as it doesn't change a thing. In fact it just draws attention to Argentina's aggressive, bullying behavior and the friendly and diplomatic behavior of the people of the Falkland Island's.

When all is said and done the people of the Falkland Island's have completely won and as ever Argentina is the loser although lets face it, Argentina always loses at everything it does.

You appear enormously confused. Bewildered almost. Or perhaps just a bit thick.

People from Hawaii...are they Americans...How did they become American...?
people from the Faroe Islands...are they Danish...How did they become Danes?
people from the Canary Islands...are they Spanish...How did ey become Spanish?

People from Malta...how did they become independent?
people from Sri Lanka...why are they not Indians?

All over the world there are hundreds of island groups.

    Some have indigenous populations
    Some have “implanted” populations
    Some are independent
Some are affiliated with the closest larger country
Some are affiliated with a country that isn't the closest

What do they all have in common? Their status is decided by those who live there.

If the people of Iceland decided they wanted to become part of Argentina, it would be their choice.
if the people of Tasmania wanted to leave Australia and join New Zealand, why not?
If the people of the Shetland Islands wanted to leave a newly independent Scotland and rejoin the Uk......LOL

Island groups, especially those distant (over 200miles) from the mainland, cannot be part of anyone's “territorial integrity” and the inhabitants can choose their affiliations.

As you know, when the British reclaimed the islands in 1833, the civilian population remained and only the 50 or so newly arrived (2 months) “rapists, murderers, mutineers, militia, vagabonds, deportees” laughably renamed “the original population” (pmsl LOLOLOLOL) we're peacefully asked to leave.

Sorry,,you are too thick to understand it...then you are an Argentine.

The populist govts are the worst ones, (...in fact was one of them who led us to war) Of course we should respect the genuine desire of the falklanders if you want to remain british. We have much more important issues to be concerned here in Arg. In my opinion much time must time until the hate btwn our people go some day, possible in the next generations relations may improve, if from both sides we learn to live/respect together. @ XAVIERV,Good job there not in Argentina and being ruled by the woman HEY

    ARGENTINA

    Cristina Kirchner / Official
•Even before she was elected president of Argentina, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner carried the haze of corruption. In the most famous case, an emissary from Hugo Chavez, the president of Venezuela, was discovered at the Buenos Aires airport carrying a briefcase stuffed with $800,000 in cash, destined, he later told the FBI, to support Kirchner’s presidential bid. Kirchner denied the allegation. Within Argentina, many question the huge fortune Kirchner and her late husband Nestor amassed since taking public office. Her declared personal wealth stands at $13.8 million, up from $500,000 when the couple first entered national politics. Kirchner cites income from real estate and hotels the couple had purchased to explain the 2,600 percent return on the couple’s investment purse. Corruption watchers complain that her government has neutered government oversight, giving auditing posts to cronies compromised by conflicts of interest. The result: corruption cases take an average of 14 years to work through the system, according to the non-profit Center for the Study and Prevention of Economic Crimes, and only 15 in 750 cases have led to convictions.

    Malvinas USELESS illegal referendum
The referendum in British Falklands or complacency
    By Marcelo G. Kohen *
On 10 and 11 March next about 1,500 eligible voters in the Falkland Islands will decide to say whether or not the islands “continue to be a British overseas territory”. Its organizers call referendum. Actually, should llamárselo “referendum of self-satisfaction.” This is a plebiscite organized by the British government to affirm British citizens who want the territory in which they reside “remains” British.
This pure propaganda exercise will not change the situation at all. The Falkland Islands will continue to be considered by the UN as a territory under decolonization. It is the administrative power that decides on how to end a colonial situation, and the area must cease to be enrolled on the list of “Territories” of the UN. In the past, it was the UN who organized and self-determination referendum audited when considered that this was the way to decolonize. The last one was the one that allowed East Timor becoming independent in 2002. Still pending the referendum in Western Sahara, another dependent territory, for which the UN established a specific operation: MINURSO (United Nations Mission for the Referendum Organization in Western Sahara). The case of the Malvinas is the opposite. The United Nations decided its realization. Not organized. Not audited. Intervene or not intervene at all in it. The UK does not even sought their participation.
The British government knows that will not support any UN, as already performed the same exercise in Gibraltar, without getting any change in status of the territory to the UN. Also failed to include a reference to self-determination in the resolutions on Malvinas.

I want to say that the current government is corrupt, I'll tell you the same thing. And so I am an opponent of this government, I have always voted for the opposition. Does the Conservative government does everything perfect English? Never wrong and has no degrees of corruption. I think you also face government that supports English. It happens the same to me, no government support or leaneth CFK. But as its policy Argentine agree to the islands.

The most ironic thing about Nazi style territorial nationalism is that these folks Norway considers to be peaceful are rolling up in their masses to sign-up to be associated with it. They can't seem to get enough of supporting a regime that keeps people poor, just so they can buy their votes.

Next thing they'll be getting an Argentinian Norwegian Knobbel Not-peace prize winner to try to deny people's rights to democracy.

    Oh wait...

Incorrect, it is a plebiscite organized solely by the Falkland Islanders. Ha! it's written by By Marcelo G. Kohen who should be charged with attempting to impersonate a lawyer. The UN politically biased committees can consider what ever they want, since they have zero powers of enforcement. The Islanders and the UK's legal rights trump them since the are based on the UN Charter, and the UK's long accepted sovereignty. Ceded to them by Argentines negligence, in submitting her dubious claim to the appropriate court. The UK doesn't need support as it is not a political issue. It is only a legal one, and the UK's claim is based firmly on right's long established under international law.

@173 - there is no need to mention self-determination in the Falkland Islands resolutions, as self-determination is at the top of the UN charter already. Perhaps you would understand it better if it was in football terms? The football rule book says that if one team scores more goals than the other in the game, they win. When two teams are requested to meet each other for a game, there doesn't need to be a specific mention of the whole scoring goals thing for that particular game. Both sides should understand that scoring goals is an over-arching rule. It wouldn't do for one team to say, at the end of the game (when soundly beaten) that there was no mention of the goal scoring bit in the details of this fixture. Would it Malvinero (district of Cordoba)?

At least Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Adolfo Perez Esquivel makes sense that the “nineteenth century” (stay away from the date deliberatley 1833) the “authorities” were expelled from the islands.
He knows the popular lie on Argentina “population” of being expelled is just that - A. Lie.

With the respect you deserve're wrong. Adolfo Perez Esquivel supports Argentina's claims. He argues that the specificity of the Malvinas is that the United Kingdom occupied the islands by force in 1833, expelled the original population and did not allow their return, thus violating the territorial integrity of Argentina.
Always felt in all global forums that Argentines were expelled by force in 1833.
Expulsion is documented with facts and a lie is not popular. Expulsion Argentina in 1833 is a strong and undeniable truth made by English colonialism and imperialism.

So it's perfectly okay for Argentina in the face of two protests from Briton to unilaterally attempt to usurp the islands. But, when Briton counters with a mirror image move it's not okay. It's impossible to violate the territorial integrity of Argentina. As term stems from modern international law and is barred from being applied retroactively.

“It is therefore not surprising that the General Assembly declared in 1970 that the modem prohibition against the acquisition of territory by conquest should not be construed as affecting titles to territory created 'prior to the Charter regime and valid under international law'”

Don't confuse Raul with actual facts now, his brain will melt.

It is actually really quite sad to see these trolls hang onto these lies, even when the Argentine government has actually stopped using them

Perhaps if Raul had actually bothered to go to the Argentine national archives, he could've seen for himself the truth that no civilians were expelled in 1833. But he won't do that, because then he would have to admit that he was wrong, and he's too arrogant for that.

Soon Argentina will disappear up its own arse, and this time it may never recover. In the past Argentina has defaulted on money owed to foreigners, this time it will be defaulting on money owed to ordinary Argentine people.

So the government will collapse, the next government will have nothing to work with: especially as CFK has done an excellent job of closing Argentina's access to international funds: so it will collapse.

If they are lucky, their friends in Iran 'might' loan them money, but the price of the aid will be extremely high. Just like Venezuela's aid will be expensive to Argentina when they call in their markers. Chavez loaned CFK lots of money, but at interest rates that are through the roof.

Argentina the 'could've been something' country has become the 'never was' country. It couldn't even make it to 'has been' country status. How sad.

    @245

I am not too sure what inventions or developments we can thank Argentina for...the following are not invented by Argentina but they have mastered them:

    Lying
    Cheating
    Jealousy
    Theft
    Defaulting
    Whining

Wasn't Dr Biro, inventor of the ball point pen, an Argentine?

    No, ynsere, he was not.

The TTT troll futily tried to assert that myth and got slapped down for it.

Biro was a Hungarian who invented it in Europe and patented it in Britsin in 1938.

He fled to Argentina in the 1940's.

Argentina had Biro sign over most of the ownership of his company to them in exchange for citizenship for his family.

I posted 3 seperate links supporting these facts, but I do not have them available now.

It IS. true that the “Biro” was developed in Argentina and marketed in BsAs before a couple of US companies sold them in the US, in 1949.

However, they still required further development before they became the ubiquitous writing implement of today

“Argentine lawmakers to call special session to reject Falklands’ referendum”

    You what???

A referendum that they didn't care about in the first place?

And now they are having a special session to reject it?

    LOL

I MUST be getting old or have missed the point somewhere along the line....

Oh well, I always said that there was three types of “Special”

1/ There is the “Special” where you storm embassies and rescue hostages

2/ there is the “Special” where you say “You want fries with that dude?”

    3/ there is “Special” needs

I think that this “special session” falls under the last heading..........

    So=
If you can claim something before you even existed, and thus claim it over 150 years later,

Does that mean, that any new or future country that appears or becomes independent in the next 150 years in south America,
[but obviously does not exist today, ]
Can then have a legitimate claim on ARGENTINA ,

    Argie bloggers come cack lol.
    Silly munchkins

    Thank you.
So you mean Argentines have never invented anything (besides the “Malvinas” myth and Peronism)?

    @251Ynsere

That's right, nothing. Except perhaps, Peronism, Malvinas Myth, and maybe Viveza Criolla.
