Clear message to Argentina: 99.8% of Falkland Islanders want to stay British

Full article 350 comments

Despite frequent snow showers and zero temperatures, the celebratory party had already started on Arch Green in the centre of Port Stanley as the result of the Falklands’ referendum was a foregone conclusion, but the loud cheer that went up from the assembled gathering could be heard all over the town as the news filtered through that only 3 persons had voted against the Falklands remaining a self-governing dependent territory of Great Britain. Hey Chrissy!

    3!

    That's THREE people voted no.

And even those 3 may have wanted independence over Argentina.

3! Just in case you missed it.

Now where's my UN definition of self determination? I know I had it here somewhere.

    Bahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

I don't understand the fuzz. 2000 Brits wants to stay Brots. Fair enough. And the islands will stay Argentine.

Well thats the issue sorted once and for all. Argentina of course never had a claim and it now ends once and for all.

Time for the UN Decolonisation committee to now remove the Islands from their jurisdiction. Its not tenable when 99.8% vote to stay a BOT in a free and fair election for the UN to have anymore to do with this issue.

    Up yours Galtieri!

You can say many things indeed, that wont get you no islands. The Falklanders may choose to be Brits, one day they may even choose independency. But one thing is for sure, those islands will never be British. They can be occupied by Britain for as long as their military supremacy and economy allows them to, but they will never ever BE British. Enjoy the moon.

You can say that about any country, what does Argentina have at their disposal that can alter the situation in anyway. Don't bank on our military supremacy changing anytime soon, we have the most devastating tools at our disposal currently than we have ever had, plus two brand new massive aircraft carriers on the way. You just have to put one foot wrong. In the meantime the oil will start flowing and Islands will remain very very British.

Cue another avalanche of crass Argentinian hypocrisy in which they will cite endless meaningless Committee of 24 votes - none of which in any case support Argentinian sovereignty and simply call for the negotiations which Argentina has itself repeatedly refused to enter without wholly unreasonable preconditions - whilst wilfully ignoring the overwhelming 2008 UN General Assembly resolution reaffirming the unwavering principle that self-determination applies to ALL peoples (yes, even Falkland Islanders), irrespective of whether there is a territorial dispute.

    @14 DoD

Well that won't be much considering how much La Campora pay you, will it?

But this referendum wasn't for Argentina. It was to show the rest of the world that the Islanders exist, that they have a voice and that they have the right to determine their own future.

Your not big on freedom and self-determination are you DoD? You believe that the Islanders should live under the jackboot of the fascist Peronists.

    But is won't ever happen.

Still you can console yourself by posting sh!te and deliberately 'misinterpreting' the constitution of the Islands, and the UN resolutions and all those other things that you like doing.

But the Islanders will remain a British Overseas Territory until THEY decide that they don't want to be anymore. But that certainly won't make them Argentinian.

By the way, are you going to be posting under DoD today, or Think?

Here is another one for the Argentinian ectoplasmic jellies to feast on:

The Charter of the United Nations explicitly declares that “All peoples have the right to self-determination; by virtue of that right they freely determine their political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development.”

Yet, in a flagrant disregard of very principles of UN General Assembly Resolution 1514, under which the Committee of 24 was founded, Argentina is currently imposing an economic blockade on the Falkland Islands and thus seeking to deny the Falkland Islanders their right to determine their own political status and freely pursue their economic, social and cultural development. Remember that the next time you try to soi transparently misrepresent Committee of 24 votes, you clueless, snivelling and uneducated bunch of fascist toadies.

Well, if you are so desperate that you think it is a subjective interpretation - when in fact it is a very explicit statement that leaves no room for doubt – then that just shows you up as one of the aforementioned clueless, snivelling and uneducated fascist toadies.

The very fact that the UN General Assembly voted resoundingly against Argentina’s attempt to have that resolution reworded in support of its pig-ignorant and crassly hypocritical stance on the issue of the Falkland Islands, is clear proof of how wrong and utterly deluded you are.

@30 I wouldn't be too surprised to find CANDEM admitting to providing the Canadian monitors but I will be surprised if they admit to sourcing and funding the two former employees of IRI to lead their team.

I would also say that the next Referendum after we Scots say NO to independence should be to ask the British People if they wish to incorporate their overseas possession into the United Kingdom and renegotiate the relationship with Europe (us being a global power and all). No hard feelings, JB, Falkland Islanders would be allowed to vote but you might find the % overwhelming.

The fact that Scotland gets a choice is highly relevant and shows that the UK respects their right to self-determination .. just as they respected Northern Ireland's right - following independence and against British government advice - to self-determination, cede from the newly founded Irish Free State and rejoin the United Kingdom.

Following your banal logic, the people of Argentina shouldn't have any say in electing the government of Argentina .. and nor should residents of individual Argentinian states have a say in electing their own regional representatives. Talk about deluded blowhard logic.

Ah! Your wife is as keen on Waitrose as Mrs Bloggs is. Or maybe even more keen. I mean I can't see Mrs Bloggs driving 13 miles to get to one. Dover to Hythe, just for those high quality brands.

No, whenever we're in the UK Mrs Bloggs uses their online ordering site. Why sometimes she even places the order before we leave the Falklands. I keep telling her that one day we're going to be delayed and it'll all go wrong but she likes to be able to fill the fridge and cupboards within minutes of us arriving. One time we literally followed that clever little van up the street in our car.

As some seem to have missed it, here is a paragraph from the above report.

''Several Argentine Nationals who live on the Islands had indicated that they too would vote 'YES' for the Islands to remain British, pinpointing the unstable Argentine Government as one of their reasons and because they enjoy a high standard of living and fantastic education opportunities for their children as another reason.''

WHAT??? Argentines not wanting to cling to the teat of Christina?

Ask the Spanish if they want to remain Spanish in 1814 and they chose to be United Provinces

Ask the British if the want to remain British in 1776 and they chose to become American

the clear message Jose Malvinero is that the very thing that makes you what you are...an Argentinian..is because in 1814 your Spanish ancestors chose not to be Spanish anymore..and sent a CLEAR MESSAGE to the World.

in 2013, The Falkland Islanders have done the same.

Very upset that I didn't read Think's post before their removal. After having several of his racist posts removed recently, it would seem it was someone else's turn.

Not that I expect an answer, but perhaps Think would be so kind as to direct everyone to the UN legal definition of a “people”.

    Here's a hint..... there isn't one!

But I would be interested in him finding one that supports his current THINKing.

Think - do pl;ease explain to me the diffrence in “squatting”

People who can trace their familes back up to 180 years in an empty land where there were no indigenous peoples to move out and take over their lands.

People who can trace their families back 200 years to a land that was originally occupied by natural indigenous peoples - who were in many cases forced out of their ancestral lands by the early day Colonists, and in other areas simply wiped out and exterminated in a virtual genocidal war.

    Please explain the difference?

That's a an easy one. If you live on a land they do not want, you are classed as indigenous.

If you live on a land that they do want, then you are classed as implanted.

Clear message from Argentina: The kelpers him right to Argentina:

Unfortunately for them have been self-deluded Kelpers:
The islanders have confessed that they are British. That's what Argentina has always said are part of the country with which we have a conflict. They can be the ones who decide which of the two countries is right. Would judge and jury.
We can not speak of 1-1-1. Now Like the UN: the islanders are British. “They are an integral part of the country with which we have the problem” The only possible negotiation is 1-1.

It's acceptable for European settlers to move half way around the world, murder the inhabitants of the land they take over and then settle. As long as they then call themselves South Americans rather than European, all is okay,

    @133 Think

Britain doesn't claim the whole of the Chilean sector of the Antarctic.

Chile claims PART of the pre-existing internationally agreed British sector, along with part of the sector claimed by Argentina (which is wholly contained within the British sector). Do try to get your facts right, you propagandist truth-torturing propagandist moron.

Britain and Chile have also agreed to cooperative in those areas and not to blow the issue out of all proportion and threaten, intimidate and impose sanctions. The same can't be said for Argentina's handling of their own claims in Antarctica.

    Think / Raul:
Vuggevise has partly answered for me.
My nationality doesn't mean I must ignore history. The British claimed “their” part of the Antarctic before we did. The part we claim lies within the part they claim.

We both have claims with different merits. They were there first, mapped it explored it, set up bases and continue to do much globally useful research. We arrived later, we have set up bases, we are the closest county to the continent. There is not dispute because we have both signed up to the Antarctic treaty which freezes all claims on the continent.

I have said before on this board that I don't like the way successive Chilean governments have mislead the population to believe that the Antarctic is our. From school age it is taught that it is part of our territory and the nightly weather forecast features it too. This is wrong and only stokes future problems.

    Does that answer your questions?

I wasn't asking for the article to be translated. I am perfectly capable of reading it without the help of Google .. I was asking for the incoherent illiterate drivel in your post to be reposted in coherent English.

Also good to see that you are so uneducated that you immediately jump on the bandwagon and blindly repeat Think's demonstrable false assertions about Chile's claim in Antarctica. The joys of being a sockpuppet, eh? LOL

And since both your incarnations are clearly too stupid to read maps, here is a Russian source showing quite clearly how utterly deluded and factually incorrect the claims of both your alter egos are in regards to Antarctica: http://en.rian.ru/infographics/20120220/171360463.html .. or, if you prefer, Wikipedia: http://en.rian.ru/infographics/20120220/171360463.html

    THE TRUE CLEAR MESSAGGE.
I understand the moment of great popular happyness that the population from the islands must be going through. In fact, they could celebrate yesterday what they have always wished. They could have their referendum finally, with the purpose of expressing their wish of remaining under british government.
However, beyond that popular happyness, there are objetive facts that we can't ignore, if we want to make a serious analysis of such a complicated cause like this one.
That so wished referendum wasn't supervised by the u. n., it was just supervised by sixty representants from different nations, which is absoluty irrelevant, and doesn't change the politic status of this conflict in absolut.
The fact that such an important decision of making a referendum in the inslands, in order to determine the politic status of the territory, is not surpervised by the u. n., is the true important messagge that the islanders, and the u. k's govt. should take into account, in order to solve this dispute. Beside, both should remember the words of the president from the decolonization committee, who said last week that self determination is not applicable for this case.
On the other hand, the govt. from the islands, the u. k., the sepoys who we live in the mainland, and those argentines who live in the islands, who love being pro imperalist, should understand once and for all that the u. k. is not the owner of the international right, so, if the u. n. call arg. and the u. k. to resume the negotiations, in order to find a solution for this conflict, it should be respected by both nations, beyond the positive and negative aspects that arg. has, like all the rest of the countries around the world, including their so loved u. k.
Maybe those people someday learn to separate the actual context, from the previous contexts.
Accept them or not, self determination has never been applied for this cause by the u. n., as it was for other colonial situations.

Well, that is where you are wrong, because the United Nations very much dictates that the principle of self-determination applies to such situations ... and I challenge you to cite any reference where the United Nations General Assembly or Security Council have ever voted to say otherwise. Whenever Argentina has attempted to get the United Nations to say otherwise, it has been overwhelmingly rejected.

As for negotiations, it is only Argentina that refuses to enter into negotiations, because it imposes preconditions which neither the United Nations C24, nor the General Assembly or Security Council have imposed in their calls for negotiations to take place. There was a long and constructive dialogue which Argentina unilaterally withdrew from and instead chose bellicose self-defeating sabre rattling.

The fact that the referendum wasn't supervised by the United Nations is wholly irrelevant to all but those who naively swallow CFK perverted propaganda .. propaganda she needs because the Falkland Islands have demonstrated a unity that Argentina can only dream of.

In 1843, the Argentine leader Juan Manuel de Rosas, looking for a way to settle a £1 million from 1824 that had been in default for 15 years (yes, they do have a very long history of this default business, don't they?), offered to drop claims to sovereignty of the islands if the British government would take over the debt. Britain refused, arguing that it already possessed them.

I think that shows just how little interest Argentina actually has in the Falklands.

“naive” implies a lack of experience. If we look back at our history we can see that on two occasions our Peruvian/Bolivian brothers have formed secret alliances against us and in much more recent times our primitos Argentinos laid plans to invade our territory. The Brits on the other hand have always been our allies.

Naivety would be for Chile to believe that Argentina has changed its spots and buried its colonial ambition.

The issue here is clearly that Argentines, collectively, are so retarded that they honestly believe that the rest of the world exists to hand over things to them just because they 'wants it'.

Just look at these imbeciles axel, raul and think... they honestly believe their reworked history that they never signed the 1850 treaty of perfect friendship, geographical proximity is still a reason to own something, and the 1982 war had no consequences. They honest believe this utter tripe and just repeat the same shameless ignorance relentlessly as if anyone with half an education will sign up to their curious plan to ethnically cleanse some islands due to their inherent racism. The same racism lets them kill their indigenous people who apparently owned the land they live on, and yet refer to other as 'colonial implants'.

By negotiation axel and Raul mean that they want Argentina to end up with more than they have today and the islanders to end up with less.

That doesn't sound like negotiation to me.

However the UN doesn't call for negotiations on sovereignty at all.

It calls for the disagreement to settled peacefully...which ONLY Britain does by maintaining its military defences it is guaranteeing peace in the region as the only aggressors are the Argentines.

Britain offered discussions just last month and Argentina refused.

My “negotiations” would require a complete withdrawal from Patagonia for 100 years and full reparations made to the indigenous that weren't slaughtered by the genocidal Argentines.

After 100 years we could go to the ICJ to see if the 50 or so UP militia and rapists were actually hard done by during their 2 month usurption of the islands.

Remember the Falklands conflict specificity resides in the United Kingdom occupied the islands by force in 1833, expelled the original population, civilians and military autoirdades, (some might escape as the Gaucho Rivero) and did not allow their return, thus violating Argentina's territorial integrity.

Wake up Argentina the writing is on the Wall. The Islanders desire to remain A British Territory Please Not Territory the one thing that Argentina insists belong to them. The Falklands will now consolidate theirstanding on the world stage because once again we showed the world how true democracy works.

So whats your next move Argentina teh Falklands appear to have taken this political round. The real world now will start to re-read the history books in depth and discover the lies that Argentina has tried to force on them .
Huge congratulations to my fellow country men and women on such an acheivement.

    Think and Raul:

I am following this great with great interest. I am an American Living in San Francisco.

I note that many Argentines claim the territory of the Falklands as theirs. However, in your own country there are numerous people who were there before your descendants settled or were implanted.

Don't you think the Maupuhce people have a valid claim that Argentina should be returned to them? After all, it belonged to them before the Spanish arrived.

    http://dailycurrant.com/2013/01/07/mapuche-people-cristina-kirchner-return-argentina/

I note, amusingly, from the article:
“”The Argentinian government accuses Britain of 'colonial behavior,' despite the fact that they only landed a few hundred settlers on an uninhabited island.“

”I think the real colonialists are the 40 million Spanish-speaking white people who live on my ancestors' land. We the Mapuche are calling on Argentina to remove its settlers from our land and return them to Europe.“

If Argentina has a claim to the Falklands, don't the Mapuche have a clain to Argentina?

And if you say ”NO”, you should realize how hypocritical that sounds to this American.

In 1982, a British submarine sank ONE ship. The rest ran for home. In 1982, a small contingent of British troops made 11,313 argie cowards surrender. In recent years, argieland has panicked over 1 destroyer, over 1 RAF officer, over missile tests that have been continuous for 30 years. The Tinman has proved his stupidity on several occasions. So send out your shitty “diplomats”. Send out your faggoty, shit-loving “troops”. Let's be clear. I don't care how many argies live and die in misery and poverty. @195 - Think

atack? or do you mean attack? I only point this out because you seem to spend a lot of time pointing this out to others.

Back to the point. Firstly the British have never attacked the Falklands, why do you keep spouting the same old lies?

In 1833 not one shot was fired. No attack. Only mutinous soldiers from the UP (no Argentina back then either) were removed. Again. No attack, no force, they left peacefully.

Regarding the Indigenous population issue. Argentina (and Spain before them) murdered the indigenous populations of South America and stole their land. The Falkland Islanders are the 1st people to settle the Islands, that also makes them indigenous people.

So it is very relevant. Argentina is a hypocrite. Your entire country was founded on murder and colonialism. Your country committed acts of genocide and ethnic cleansing against the native peoples. Your country wants to commit acts of genocide and ethnic cleansing against the indigenous people of the Falklands too.

What xevioso was trying to point out was the hypocrisy of the Argentine position. You accuse the British of stealing the Islands and colonising them, yet Argentina stole the land from the natives and colonised that.

You want the Islanders to 'hand back' what you say (erroneously I add) the land that was stolen, yet you won't hand back the land that was stolen from the Native Amerindians.

    Hypocrite.

By the way, I notice that the grammar of your post and spelling has changed. Do you have a time share with another La Campora troll, who uses this screen name?

    @195 Think:

Indian territories in the US are effectively nations that can set their own laws.

Tribal sovereignty in the United States refers to the inherent authority of indigenous tribes to govern themselves within the borders of the United States of America. The federal government recognizes tribal nations as “domestic dependent nations” and has established a number of laws attempting to clarify the relationship between the federal, state, and tribal governments. The Constitution and later federal laws grant local sovereignty to tribal nations, yet do not grant full sovereignty equivalent to foreign nations, hence the term “domestic dependent nations”.

You should not be surprised to understand that there are many people in the U.S. who believe we stole Native American land, and that they certainly do have a right to ask for it back. In many cases we have given it back to them. You can visit the Cherokee Nation any time.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherokee_Nation

But I noticed you avoided my question by using the arbitrary definition of “Civilized Christian Nation”, some entity that, as far as I am aware, no courts in Argentina or Great Britain or The UN recognize. Did you make that up?

At the end of the day, there is a large group of indigenous people in your country that your ancestors supplanted. Those people would like their land back. Do you support handing Argentina back over to the Indigenous people your ancestors supplanted?

If no, then don't the people who live on the Falkland Islands also have a right to say no to Argentina when it asks the same of them?

You can imagine them all stumbling towards the Atlantic coast only to get there and stop at the water's edge, staring blankly at the eastern horizon, arms outstretched repeating “Malvinas nuestras” hopelessly and with no idea of how to get there.

    Answering your “rephrased question”:
”Do you believe Argentina should hand its land back over to the Native Amerindians people your ancestors took it from?”

I do believe that any ”Dominant Society”, in this case Argentina, should strive to devolve as much territory and dignity as possible to its Indigenous Populations.

Quite acceptable examples of the above would be the policies implemented by Sweden or Canada.
Much less so are the, mostly failed, policies implemented by the USA.

During the last 30 years of democracy, Argentina has given giant steps in the creation of a wide-ranging Indigenous Peoples Legislation.
The implementation of that quite adequate legislation is though sketchy, at best.

    And, to end….
    I’ll repeat again…:
The Malvinas Issue Between the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Argentina has NOTHING to do with the Indigenous Issue.

    “What history?”

1864: Argentina supported Spain against Chile in the Chincha wars.

1881: Argentina was party to the Peruvian / Bolivian conniving of the 19th century against Chile. Furthermore, once we were embroiled in the war with them Argentina pushed to resolve the issue of disputed Patagonia, knowing full well that Chile would have to cede given we couldn't fight all three at once.

1891: Argentina offers the USA Salta as a base from where to attack Chile.

1978: the Beagle conflict, Argentina claims Chilean territory in disregard of the treaty signed in 1881.

    1978: Plan Soberanía

2004: Argentina proposes Chilean territory be given to Bolivia - in disregard of the Pactos de Mayo to which Argentina was a signatory.

Those are just a few instances of when Argentina has been untrustworthy...not lies....and lets not get started on commercial untrustworthiness.

    Don't sulk.

I think I have the solution to this problem. Let FI take a 20-year lease on the province of “Santa Cruz” (the southernmost province of Arg) and administer it, on the understanding that, at the end of the lease the people of Santa Cruz have a referendum to decide whether they wish to stay with the FI or rejoin Arg. If the latter decision is the case (indicating that they prefer Arg rule) then the FI will also revert to Arg on the 200th anniversary of the British “occupation” (2033). What can be fairer than that?

This 99.8% CONFIRMS that the population of the islands does not match the Self Determination way to solve the conflict. Self Determination must be claimed by populations that are supposed to be invaded and dominated by another society, and the islanders ARE british and want to remain being territory of Great Britain, cause their place in there can't be explained without the story of colonization and the UK seizing lands allover the world.

You guys there, in Malvinas might think it is ok, maybe because you are always exposed by a media that shows Argentina as a monster, as an aggressive society that hates british people and that would take away all your rights, nothing further from reality, guess what? Argentina is not the one holding the weapons in here, and outside that capsule the world really thinks that this situation is not ok and it's not fair.

As a person that celebrates the pacific search for justice and decolonization that Argentina is carrying out, I believe that Argentina should be celebrating this. In a way (one that the international corporate media won't spread the world), this demonstrate that colonialism is alive and strong in SouthAmerica.

Even the USA, that has been the UK's best alliance even at fundamentalistic wars is seeing this as a show for the media. If the USA is acting this way, all my people here please let me express that things are as clear as a glass of water. Only the power of huge international corporations can still keep this excuse of self determination alive. If the UK wasn't still an empire that holds privileges at International Community part of the Argentine territory would have stopped suffering from invasion long time ago.

Well, Argentina are part of Mercoser through choice...so therefore Argentina should not have self determination.

    Sounds stupid? I think so.

You really cannot comprehend that Argentine territory is all invaded land can you: Argentina is a construct of Europeans, for Europeans. Do you realy believe Amerindians are any better off being ruled by Europeans in Buenos Aries rather than Madrid? When I see a 97% reduction in the population of Argentina I might start taking you seriously about justice and decolonisation. Then the Amerindians can set up their own immigration policy and MAY let you back into South America.

In 1833, and for at least 50 years thereafter, all of Patagonia was no mans land. The Falklands were at least 1600 km from “Argentina” which, oh shucks, didnt actually exist until around 1850. Britain could easily have taken Patagonia too, so consider yourself lucky to have it. In fact the Welsh were the first to have the courage to settle there (1860's) amongst the fierce Indians. That was before General Roca decided to wipe out the Indians so as to make it safe for the latino colonisation which only got under way in the 1890's.

The good men of England are avakening after that Ruritanian colonial referendum….
(Seumas Milne?.... What kind of ugly Dago name is that?)

”Tiny British settler population, most of whom weren't born there but are subsidised to the tune of £44,856 a head to keep them in the Rhodesian retro style to which they are accustomed”
(Ahhhhh Rhodesia ….. all those ”When I”….Pamwe Chete memories ;-)

In fact, British governments only developed a taste for self-determination after they had been forced to abandon the bulk of their empire and saw a way to hold on to colonised enclaves of dependent populations in places like Gibraltar and Northern Ireland.
But it's always been a pick and mix affair: there were no self-determination ballots for the people of Hong Kong or the Chagos Islands, expelled by Britain four decades ago to make way for an American air base in Diego Garcia. There are different rules, it seems, for white people.
(”Different rules for white people?”….. No sh*t, Sherlok!)

Self determination was used to confirm that the islanders are not a subjugated people. Argentina has sad they were a subjugated people hence the falklands listing on the UN C24 list. This proves the opposite. Perfectly reasonable.
It is Argentina that holds their guns towards the falklands, it is argentina that invaded the falklands, argentina that blockades, argentina that threatens the economy, threatens the falklands way of life, argentina from lowly mercopress poster, to full blown Presidentee that insults the falkland islanders as squatters and pirates and insults our war dead through weasally embarrassing snide olympic videos, argentina is the master of its own misfortune and oh boy you have screwed it up badly.

You guys claim to want to rid the world of colonies, first step then, kill yourselves. You are a spanish colony as much as the falklands are a british colony. Britain did not slaughter a single native in acquiring the falklands, not a single argentine/spaniard was killed, not one. Britain claimed it in 1765, at least 50 years before Argentina existed. The argentine garrison removed in 1833 was done without a shot fired, the civilian population mostly elected to stay on the island (self determination) and even Sir Charles Darwin's diaries and louis vernet's records show this to be true.

Britain's priveleges. We are a permanent member of the security council and we earned it. Argentina is merely an embarrassing guest on the council at the moment. Argentine malvinistas seem to band around the world imperial/colonial and live in a world of anti-european sentiment. Seems to me that you are driven by some kind of jealousy, racism even.

The message is clear , they do not want to be argentine, well lets face it, who in their right mind would want to be when you could be a cool Brit, drinking tea, eating cucumber sandwiches on the lawn, whilst watching cricket, or tennis, whilst thinking 'thank fuck I'm not Argentine'.. more tea anyone?

Think- The EU lists The Falklands as a British Territory and we are named and listed in various EU Agreements - simple fact old chap. Not surprisinly the EU Commission spokseperson has to be pretty noncommittal over an issue that the EU Member States regard as BiLateral only and not an EU issue.
Also you and others would do well to separtae out the truth between those nations that formally and in writing back the Arg claim - as aprt from those that merely say - yes there is a dispute - the relevant parties should solve it peacefully etc.
But hell - when did truth and reality ever bother the Kirschener Govt .
Over that last year or two I have spoken with several senior Chilean Diplomats current and retired - who all fully agree for instance that the majority in Chile feel that the Islands belong to the people who live there - the minority say they should belong to Argentina.
But looking at the border line in kilometers and the need to “manage” relations with neighbours(one can only choose friends- one has to live with neighbours) all Chilean Govts have to go in public with the minority view - that is reality
Uruguay the position is the same.

Both have a different line though when dealing direct with the Islands.

These questions now need to be asked.

Why is there so much dialogue on decolonization about a people who by choice have decided to live in a remote place and be protected by another Country?.
Why is it so necessary to remove a colony status in the world place?.
Why in the case of the Falkland Islands should we not be allowed to live as we choose under the protection that we choose?.

re your generous wine offer - does that extend to me? I am in Misiones province now with my (Arg born) Japanese g/f - who, sensible little darling that she is, also thinks that the Arg claim on FI is TONTO..!!! Be that as it may, as a wine connoisseur, I would like to take up your offer. However, I only wish I could bring you some samples of other much better S.Hemisphere wine producers - Chile (of course) but also South African, Australian, and New Zealand wines - all of which are far better than yours..!! Only you wouldn't be aware of how far behind your wine industry is since Cristina F**K (for that is her real name) has imposed such massive import duties that unless you are either very rich or yourself an Arg politician (which is quite likely) you will never get the opportunity to try them in Argentina..!! Do you accept my offer to drink your wine?

280 Hipolyte- maybe I will take you up on that one day - I dont deny you have some damn good wines - and beef.
History - we could talk all night about it- 1690-1764-1765-1770-1771-1775 and then on to 1833.
1805 and 1807 was nothing to do with the Islands - just Britain attacking their current Eurpean enemy of the day- Spain!
Either of us can make our version of a historic claim based on how we interpret events up to 1833 - and some of those were a bit murky on both sides.
But reality is that was the way the world solved it,s problems in those days - by force.
Today in the 21st century times have changed and its all about people to day - Human Rights and Self Determination count for a lot more than who did what to who 180-250 years ago!
Our Countries should be friends - we used to be - despite the Sovereignty argument -but you will need to get rid of the current President and her attitude first- and then try the Menem approach again.

    @ Hypocrite,

Thanks for not inviting me because even though I'm here in Arg, I don't really want to visit Mendoza - been there, done that - scruffy city, dusty untidy roads, broken pavements, crappy casino, lousy restaurants, scruffy vineyards, indifferent wine. Most of the vineyards are not even open to independent visitors - you are expected to join a ripoff tour. I rented a car (at twice the European price for a very crappy car) but was disappointed that very few if any vineyards have nice guest lodges or fine-dining restaurants. We had to stay in some primitive places and they weren't easy to find either. For an experience it simply cannot possibly compare with the Cape of Good wine country - talk about chalk and cheese - have you been there Hypowhat? Its a paradise on earth - the jagged mountain scenery, the old Cape Dutch buildings, the beautifully-tended gardens, the giant old oak trees, the friendly people, the wine, the prices, the.... Oh shit - sorry, of course like most Args you either cannot afford to travel or your govt won't let you buy foreign currency will they? Unless, as I speculated earlier, you are somehow connected to the Cristina F**K “peoples” dictatorship. Anyway, even though most of the islanders haven't seen much of Arg - they seem to instinctively know that something is not right with this broken-down country of yours..!

Actually, since we've rehashed the competing claims over and over and nobody can or will agree, lets rather talk about South Georgia, etc. What, if any, is the basis of that spurious claim? RAVEN. VUGGEVISE.
Raven: This is evident that you ignore that between 1884 and 1888, arg. suggested taking the case to the arbitration, which was rejected by the u. k.
In 1947, the u. k. manifested arg. that it would be disposed to discuss about the dependencies from the islands, south georgia and sandwich, before the i. c. j, but it didn't include the mavinas-falklands in the proposal. In my opinion, if none of the two nations proposed again to take the question to th i. c. j., after 1947, is because perhaps both aren't sure of getting a positive outcome for their countries.
On the other hand, while it is true that arg's claim wasn't continues during some periods of time, when arg. had a very big economic dependence with the u. k., which showed that it was obvious that it wasn't in conditions for claimg the u. k. for it's rights over the islands, however, despite these aspects, the u. k. accepted to start negotiations with the country, in 1968, 1974 and 1980, which showes that the case has strong and weak aspects for both nations, and you should take into account all these aspects too, in order to make a serious analysis, instead of telling just what is convenient for you.
Vuggevise: Accepted or not, the case has always been considered as a special colonial situation, and self determination has never been invoked in any of the resolutions that were expressed for this case, in fact, get into the webside from the u. n., and you'll see that there is not any resolution which says: application of the right to self determination for the malvinas-falkland cause.
Like it or not, that right has never been applied for this cause, as it was for other colonial situations.

You didn't discover them, you didn't explore them, they were on the wrong (Portuguese) side of the Tordessilas line, and you didn't even bother to claim them until around 1940 - presumably hoping and expecting that Adolf would back your claim, which I'm sure he would have done if that would have brought you into the war - just as Mussolini hoped to get parts of France and various bits of Yugoslavia, Greece, etc. If that is the spurious basis of Argentina's claim to both sets of islands then it is obvious why Arg refuses to go to international arbitration. to all the keepers and their supporters......

I know that there is no permanent population on S.Georgia or its dependencies, and maybe thats why I am the only one who keeps bringing up the issue. Anyway this is why I chose the good name of Ernest Shackleton, my apologies to this great British hero, who would be furious at his resting place being ceded to Argentina. With regards to the FI I think this is a very relevant point I make that the RG's are also claiming these islands which neither they nor Spain ever had anything to do with. Trivial as it is, we all know the basis of the RG claim to the FI, and we can and do and will argue about that till hell freezes over. But nobody, least of all the RG's knows under what basis, historical or otherwise, rests their very belated (around 1940) and spurious claim to SG. In dozens of posts I have only ever had one response from an RG (think) who said “we want it because you want it”, which is not only nonsensical but childish, but then thats what we have come to expect from these thick-skulled turnip heads. Only one person has given a rational reason (obviously not an RG) and that was to say the claim is based purely on the fact that SG is administered as a dependency of the FI. But if this is the basis of the claim, then doesn't that imply a de-facto acceptance of British ownership of the FI ..?

IMO there is a sneaky ulterior motive. The RG's know their claim to SG is nonsensical but they added it to their “wish list”, so to speak, hoping that at a later point Britain would eventually accede to the relentless RG demands for the FI on condition that they (the Brits) keep SG - to which Argentina would “reluctantly” agree (whilst barely containing their childlike glee) as a face-saver for the Brits. Rather like a bazaar merchant will ask 3x what his goods are worth so that a 50% discount looks like a great bargain. Anyone have any input?

    @312 ernest shackleton,
l too, in the past, have brought up the RGs ridiculous “claims” to South Georgia & the SSI.
l agree with what you say to a certain extent but l believe that there is more to it than that.
They desperately want the sole rights to plunder Antarctica's resources & don't like the idea of competition.
Possession of all British Antarctic lslands & territory is their first step.
They could then also control any shipping movements between South America & Antarctica.
Of course, the oil from the Falklands is an added unexpected bonus.
Peron started all this guff, he admired Mussolini, who as we know was always going on about the “effete” British.
This combined with the dithering of the Foreign Office over the Falklands, prior to 1982 has emboldened the Argentines.
And of course, now they have convinced themselves that all this land is really theirs.
They are like the schoolyard bully who senses weakness & takes advantage over it.
lt came as a big shock to them that we actually fought back, then went on to defeat them.
Their Latin psyche cannot handle defeat. They must always win.
That is why l believe that they will try again.
They didn't claim British Antarctica until 1942(&Chile in 1940)when they both thought that Britain would lose the war.
Their only real argument is proximity(which isn't an argument at all)as their myth of expulsion has been shown to be a pack of lies.
To finish up, they have no moral, legitimate, legal or historical rights to our territory & deep down, l suspect that they know this.
They are just“trying it on” & hoping for a miracle.

The analogy with Mussolini is apt since he only joined Hitler's war belatedly when France was on its knees and he thought he could get a chunk of S.France cheaply. I agree in total with what you have written. Argentina has always acquired land by deception or murder and they are known to the world as thieves.
Many of the commentators writing on these comment sections who argue with us over our homeland are fanatics , few in numbers and puppets of the regime that runs them.
The only reason for their continued claim to the Falkland Islands and dependencies is as already mentioned by others . They want control of the South Atlantic Antarctica gateway and will not stop until someone decides that it has gone on long enough.

I also agree that there will inevitably be war over our Country again because of the fact that with the discovery of oil we are going to be more desirable to own.
You are also right in saying that Argentina has no absolute claim to South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands even if there was a thread of truth in the Falklands Issue.

The reason they started their campaign on south Georgia in 1992 was to see just how much of an interest Great Britain actually had in the Islands and they almost got away with it if it was not for the fact they raised their Flag on it.
You are also right in that the Argentines would use South Georgia as a sob giveaway as part of their real prize but what may have been possible once is now, thanks to the world communications very unlikely to happen.

The only way that the threat from Argentina will ever go away is by a total external military defeat of their Country and that is unlikely to happen unless Argentina starts another war over the Islands. If they do then the next tie will see their complete defence system destroyed and when that happens Chile , Uruguay, Brazil and others will seize the opportunity and Argentina know this and it is that which is keeping them from current military action.

    @ sthink & hypocrite...

Interesting that in Arg nobody can even dare mention that the Arg claim is invalid, let alone side with the FI. Wasn't there recently a small but very courageous group of Argentines who tried to open a rational debate on the “Malvinas” issue? The fact that they were shouted down as traitors and issued with death threats speaks volumes for the lack of freedom within Arg.

In Britain, on the other hand, we have the likes of George Galloway (vocal advocate for Muslim fanaticism) being politely interviewed by the BBC as if the odious opinions of this despicable opportunist are widely held by the British public. Since his opinions are only held by a small minority, and can be guaranteed to be anti-British in content, I personally disagree with allowing such blatant traitors a national voice, but this is the difference between the 2 sides.

@325 toooldtodieyoung(love your screen name btw!),
l don't worry too much about señor Think.
We all know that he's a born liar.
Also not too much imagination as he has to repeat what people say, then twist it to have a different meaning.
lts fun to beat him, which l do quite often.
l know that he hates us British, it oozes out of every posting he makes.
Don't know why, really & care even less.
    @323 Think,
All wrong & not worth commenting on, really.
But l will say that l have never “had to leave”anywhere.
l still have Residence permits in my passport for some of the countries that you list & can return if l so wish.
However it is more fun living here, especially since it annoys you RGs. lol.
And FYI, We will NOT have to leave here.
Who is going to make us?..............................don't say Argentina or you'll give me the giggles & l won't be able to sleep.

    You ask...:
Who is going to make us (resettle)?

    I say...:
Difficult to say today, but, given the official timeline for eviction and judging by the following list..:
    http://www.babycentre.co.uk/a557221/top-uk-baby-names-2003#ixzz2NlP5p6pG

......the names of the English coppers assisting you to resettle may well be Jack, Joshua, Thomas, James, Daniel, Oliver, Benjamin, Samuel, William, Joseph or even Harry…..

How very fitting in these exacerbated religious days we are living through.....

But...... As God on Earth said last year..:
    “Las Malvinas son Argentinas”

Happy St Patrick's day to all you English, by the way.

l'd say that your God on Earth is a bit confused.
Anyway, you can have your malvinas, where ever they are, but we'll keep the Falklands(AND South Georgia & the SSIs & British Antarctica).
As they are NOT your land.

    @337 Sr Think.

I hadn't seen it but I'm very pleased I now have. Clearly, if she can just shake off that old fellow on her right she'll be able to get down to the real purpose of her visit. Exposing the involvement of the ultra-Republican oil money fuelled IRI (1225 I St NW Washington, DC) in the very event he is trying to draw to the attention of the Democrat President that is. Private Eye might well be interested in running this story.

“I don’t crack under a gale as English oak does.
I gently bend for the wind, as our humble tacuara does.”

In other words, you have no integrity and will sell your principles for self-interest.
As opposed to the British who will put themselves in harm's way to “defend the right”.

Thanks for admitting you are a sleazebag.

Why wouldn't they want new laes.that pop up with no warning? Increase in the tax for purchase outside Arg to 20% today. To be fair, it's because they're propping up the currency.

I don't necessarily condemn Argentina for taking measures to shore up their currency, but such desperate measures are a very visible symptom of the serious trouble they are in, and their poor, of not criminal mgmt. of the economy.

Very hard on the average middle class Argentinian
