Argentina which the IMF censured for underreporting inflation less than three months ago after three warnings over the past two years, last week authorized the deposit of 400 million dollars with the Washington-based lender to increase the nation’s access to emergency cash. Read full article

10 peso = 1 dollar by Christmas!
Any more forecasts?
Um so I'm 4 months late. So what?
Apr 29th, 2013 - 09:26 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I've said many times it is very hard to predict WHEN an economy will crahs but not IF.
You should thank your lucky stars I was off a little bit.
Since it is almost 10/1 now.
I agree. Por la patria, they need to put ALL their money in pesos! Get your real friends and your family to do it now!!
Apr 29th, 2013 - 09:28 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I agree with yankeeboy.
Apr 29th, 2013 - 09:46 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The market rate is much closer to 10 than it is to the government rate.
(5)
Apr 29th, 2013 - 09:53 pm - Link - Report abuse 0it is very hard to predict WHEN
Yes I agree, only a fool (yankeeboy) would qualify such a prediction with a definite date (Christmas)
Wasn't the Libertad going to sail to NY too?
Another yankeeboy fail.
I predict you will continue to make erroneous predictions.
@4 got to admit, Yankeeboy wasnt far off was he? ,
Apr 29th, 2013 - 10:06 pm - Link - Report abuse 0so......he was slightly off, does that mean to you that the peso crisis does not exist and all in argentina is well?
the peso has been in freefall since 2009 so are we right to assume its going to get much much worse?
will argentina draw a line at 10 peso before pulling its head from its rancid ass, or maybe 11, what about 15?
but it seems petty to knock a close forecast in an attempt to dismiss argentinas money troubles .....guess what, it doesnt, and its bloody great to watch,!
one thing that is safe to say is that the peso is only going to continue to rise, the more the better.......how much by.... who knows, who cares as long as its rising........wheelbarrows at the ready Argies!!
Reap what you sow...........REAP IT!!!
Just been watching 'Scam City' Buenos Aires on National Geographic. Lots of dodgy printed money. As a tourist you hand 100 pesos to a taxi driver, he switches it and hands you a fake one back saying it's fake, so you hand him another real one, doubling his money. They also give you fake money back as change.
Apr 29th, 2013 - 10:20 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Counterfeit money in Buenos Aires is rife apparently. No wonder the city is being avoided by the cruise liners.
Pick-pocketing is at epidemic proportions also.
This city is a very dodgy place indeed to visit.

so......he was slightly off....yes,yes, and the Libertad is in NYC.
and its bloody great to watch
Well if you have nothing better to do I guess that is ok...if not a little sad.
(10)
Yes, you have to think on your feet. Not a place for the slow witted.
@10 Yes it is true about all the fake money, some is so bad it is photocopies on cheap paper. But if you are aware of it you always make sure you have plenty of small notes so you can pay the exact amount. Also, take care when choosing a taxi. Always take radio cars, or better still take a taxi from an hotel (they note the number of the cab should there be a problem). Even my friends in BsAs, having lived there all their lives, are careful about choosing a taxi and will wave on a cab if they don't like the look of the driver.
Apr 29th, 2013 - 10:43 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I don't know that pick-pocketing is more than most cities, though it has increased in recent years. You have to use smarts, not act like a tourist and don't display anything of value. When I was living there I was always alert in the street but I genuinely had a good time there with many fond memories.
My friends living there say crime has increased a lot in the last years or so. Maybe wait for the next crisis to be over before visiting.

Apr 29th, 2013 - 11:02 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Yes, it's twue, its twue.
Elaine just doesn’t want to go so she can have all the travel stories.

Yes, you must be careful with the taxis and watch your belongings in the street. Your friends are right, crime levels have increased. Still, shame to miss out on one of the world's most beautiful countries just because you might lose your watch, Where is your spirit of adventure?
The Brits used to fearlessly explore the hinterlands of Africa. Are we to believe they have become a nation on ninnies afraid of a fake bank note or two?
Toby, Predicting when an economic collapse will happen is like predicting a huge storm. Everyone can see the black clouds but don't know exactly when it will start raining.
Apr 29th, 2013 - 11:21 pm - Link - Report abuse 0People aren't afraid of losing U$10 they're afraid of getting knifed or kidnapped after they leave an ATM.
It is scary in BA you have to be very careful much more so than in London NYC or DC. Much much more.
I've told you before you don't know what it feels like to not be afraid. We don't live with 12 foot walls, private security outside of the house. We just don't need it.

Apr 30th, 2013 - 12:22 am - Link - Report abuse 0“Everyone can see the black clouds but don't know exactly when it will start raining.”
Yes, everyone can see the black clouds, so do we really need the village idiot running around shouting “it’s going to rain, it’s going to rain....er...sometime”
“It is scary in BA you have to be very careful much more so than in London NYC or DC. Much much more.”
Sure we have crime here, have you none in the USA?
Are north Americans never shot by other north Americans?
Maybe your corner of your city is safe, but the stats would imply that a lot of people are being killed elsewhere in your blessed country.
You are suggesting that people should be afraid in BA but not in US cities? Don’t insult the good posters of Mercopress?
The British posters on here will know, that as a British tourist you are more likely to be killed on holiday in the US than in Argentina – is that not true?
Care to explain how that works.
“I've told you before you don't know what it feels like to not be afraid.”
So why do so many of you own guns? Must be for self-defence right, unless you are all criminals planning your next murder or assault.
So what is it that you are all so afraid of that you need guns at home?
Enlighten me.
(16) Anbar
No they never learn and they are running out of options.
I find it unlikely that US Congress will approve this for a country that was censured by the IMF, not to mention a country on the verge of another default. Argentina proves time after time that it is not trustworthy of working in the main stream international community. Try another plan asslips.
Apr 30th, 2013 - 12:36 am - Link - Report abuse 0Being off 4 months is nothing in economic terms.

Yes, but there was only a handkerchief in there. Well, I wasn't to know that, was I? Anyway, it doesn't matter, he's dead now. By the way, I think it was a perfect gut shot. Could you have done that from the same range?
In other news, another British tourist shot 6 La Campora thugs dead in the Plaza de Mayo today. She said I suppose they thought I was just another little old lady. But these .44 Magnums are really good.
@20 Trying to deflect?...
@22 No, that's what I asked YOU.
This notice is a confirmation that the argentine reserves are quite low. If the country had U$D 40,000 million it wouldn't need the additional U$D 1.600 million mentioned.
Apr 30th, 2013 - 11:54 am - Link - Report abuse 027. Yeah it looks like they are desperate. I'm betting the plan to default on June's interest payments and beyond then try to blame it on NYC courts. The problem is though there is no way to increase the reserves until ( maybe) the next crop.

Five seconds, or less, is enough to show your inability to spell or use intelligence. But then, you don't have any intelligence, do you? Just the desperate La Campora script. Of one thing we can be sure. On the available evidence, there are around 6 honest Argentinians. The rest (41,281,625) are cheating, corrupt, criminal, larcenous, mendacious war criminals. Plus the cowardly ex-pats. (Don't expect us to join in the misery. We have enough money. We can get out. Live in proper countries. La patria? Sure. How much? Too much. We'll gabble, but we're not going back. Let that cow steal our money? Not a chance.) Come on, Dany, tell us the truth. How much tax do you pay on the income for your tricks? Do you declare it all? How much does your John take? How much do you send to argieland? Just to keep your family income high enough to exist in the better areas of the villas. Do they have their own sewage disposal? Their own honest paid-for electrical supply?

Apr 30th, 2013 - 02:04 pm - Link - Report abuse 0So in the absence of data that is acceptable to you, we should just believe..er..you. Nice try yankee (maybe andy65 will settle for that) but the brighter ones on here won’t.
Why don’t we take a nice broad approach...say murder of tourists, that kind of data is always recorded. And why don’t we take the country of most of the posters on here (the UK).
Where are more Brits murdered yankeeboy, in Argentina or in the good ol’ USA?
Actually, anyone can answer the questions. Anyone?
Anbar, you’re bright, you know the answer?
Pirate-Love, put your spag-bol down, you probably know the answer.
Anyone else?
Elaine? You know, but you’re not going to break ranks are you.
Anglotino, you’re one of the sharpest, you must know. Please help yankee out with understanding the dangers facing a tourist in his own country.

If you don’t trust our data, have a look at you own, then think about it some.
According to your own media and institutions, where are more British tourists slain? In the US or in Argentina?
It is an easy questions, you just don’t like the answer.
TTT Don't drag me into your bickering. I gave my opinion about crime in BsAs.
Apr 30th, 2013 - 03:23 pm - Link - Report abuse 0I would say that I did not feel more threatened on my recent trip to Mendoza but my Argentine friends definitely were more concerned with insecurity. I heard numerous stories about crime and people living there were considerable more spooked. I don't think you can deny there is an increase in crime in Argentina when everyone but the government says that is the reality.
This article is about the severe financial problems in Argentina and the government scrambling around trying to find a solution. As a consequence of people experiencing yet another financial crash, crime will continue to rise in Argentina. People feel desperate and that they have nothing to lose. It can happen in any country where there is financial meltdown.
@Truth_Tellіng_Trοll How can you compare anything with a lieing thieving nation like Argentina, don't you get it troll the Argentine government are unreliable on any data they produce isn't that the reason they are the only member of the IMF to be censored and what was it for??? producing false data.
Apr 30th, 2013 - 03:25 pm - Link - Report abuse 0That is true, I don't trust the data for Argentina if there was some but there isn't even fake data to compare.

Apr 30th, 2013 - 07:59 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Crime
The most common crimes are distraction theft, bag snatching and armed robberies. Take particular care in restaurants and internet cafes, on public transport and in the tourist areas of San Telmo, La Boca and Retiro. Keep a close eye on your personal possessions at all times. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash or wearing jewellery. Avoid isolated or poorly lit areas at night.
Con-men have been known to rob tourists while an accomplice pretends to help remove ketchup or mustard that has been ‘accidentally’ sprayed on them. There have also been reports of thieves posing as hotel guests and snatching bags while tourists are checking into hotels or hostels. Another common tactic is slitting handbags in crowded places and snatching mobile phones while they are being used.
Passport thefts are common especially in Buenos Aires and Mendoza. Leave your passport in a hotel safe or security box and keep a photocopy of the details page with you at all times.
Kidnappings and so called ‘express kidnappings’ occur in Argentina. Victims are normally held while criminals empty their bank accounts with cash cards. Once the ransom is paid the victim is usually quickly released. It is common for thefts to take place when withdrawing cash from ATMs.
If possible, book taxis in advance. If you hail a taxi in the street, only use a ‘radio taxi’. These have a clearly visible company logo on the rear passenger doors. If you are being met at the airport and you don’t know your greeter, confirm their identity before setting off. Alternatively use a ‘remise’ service from the official stand in the centre of the arrivals concourse.
If you are a victim of crime, you should inform the local police and get a police report.
In Buenos Aires, a 24-hour police helpline in English is available on telephone number 101. There is also a new multi-lingual free phone number for
@54: You governament is only doing bad publicity to Argentina, bad propaganda because you people are a bunch of pathetic and hypocrits murderers who try to cover themselfs up betwen the flag of justice and you only want blood and petrol for your own benefit. Tell me, am I wrong???? And the governament did not do the crime rate, CAN YOU READ? IS THAT BAD SCHOOL BACK IN YOUR UGLY SMELLY COUNTRY? The last report is by Clarin (governament opposition) and show a murder rate in the Province of Buenos Aires of 1.2 per 100.000 habitants, (nearly 18.000.000 people live in Buenos Aires) I do not think anywhere in US and only in some places in Europe you can find a similar rate. But I guess your inbread genes do not let you think.

I think someone sold you cheap lies and you bought them.
Apr 30th, 2013 - 08:36 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Now, to the subject, what you have to say abouts Clarin rate? uhh?
Back to the original story, I think that once CFK has changed the law so that either she or Nestor (after all argentines are ridiculously nostalgic and he has a higher approval rating) can run again for presidential office they will borrow massively from the IMF to bribe the constituencies that they need to secure another term in office. It is very difficult to escape debts to the IMF effectively 15% is owed to the BRICS although the largest slice is owed to the yanks and then the Europeans. Effectively they are borrowing money from their grandchildren, born or yet to be born.
Apr 30th, 2013 - 08:46 pm - Link - Report abuse 0@ warteiner it is not deflecting it is pointing out to you that your problems are all down to Kirchner and her crazy polocies you elected her so you get what you vote for AM I RIGHT??? May 01st, 2013 - 06:23 am - Link - Report abuse 0All these reserves are counted as of “immediately disposition” what can be used immediately like cash.
The article itself above explain that ““Once the drawing rights are approved, they can use the money practically immediately, like cash.””
So you point it is simple wrong as always.
It is not our fault that Pgerman and you have no clue about how central banks works. Isn’t it?
@Anglotino
“My country gives money to the IMF to help others such as Argentina. I don't think we have ever had to borrow it back.”
Nope IMF members as a part of G20 agreement committed them selves to IMF to increase funds and Quotas.
Julia Gillard offers to help European economy via the International Monetary Fund
“The prime minister urged European leaders to do more to resolve their debt problems and warned Australia would suffer if the fallout sparks another global financial crisis.”

And after all you are helping yourself you be in the middle of another financial crash
Now lets see how people like Prat-gay (the money laundry boy for UK banks) lies and Crappy media use it for political and twisted reasons.

I'm not sure how RG bonds or Gold could be liquid? It clearly shows U$4B as the only cash on hand.

”14. The KPIs for the current financial year were the same as previous years. They specify that:
(i) The foreign currency reserves, whilst not employed in operations to deliver on policy objectives, will be invested in assets that are liquid and secure and are monitored daily. Specifically:
• A minimum of 90% will be held in tradeable debt securities and cash;
• A minimum of 90% will be invested in assets that are rated equivalent to at least AA-, (Aa3) by two or more of the rating agencies (Moody’s, Standard and Poor’s, and Fitch), or an equivalent internal measure for unrated entities;

May 01st, 2013 - 08:22 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Go back to post 61 and find the words SUCH AS.
As it is abundantly clear you are not a native English speaker, it would be understandable.
As far I now Argentina it is not in Europe or am I wrong?
Wrong? Usually. But Argentina is not in Europe. Though you were. But Argentina is still ONE of the countries our contributions to the IMF help.
If you think benefitting by stabilising the international financial system is the same as borrowing from the actual IMF.
Then your post failed you own usual nitpicking standards.
But keep it up. You'll hear back from me WHEN Argentina borrows money from the IMF.
I bet it is before any of the following do:
Australia
Canada
USA
UK
Chile
Colombia
Mexico
@ Yankeeboy
Have you heard of international creditors or foreign businesses asking for payment BEFORE delivering or carrying out for the UK government?
Because pretty much all those dealing with Argentina are.
Probably why Argentina's reserves are so closely monitored and hence important.
I really have no idea about UK reserves, it has been and most likely always be a stable county with a stable currency.
May 01st, 2013 - 08:37 pm - Link - Report abuse 0What was the British currency before the pound sterling? Oh yeah...Roman coins.
Argentina hasn't had a stable currency EVER
Every 10-20yrs or so they need to come up with a new name to fool a new generation.
My guess is The Nuevo Austral is the next one up
Isn't Dany's stupidity quite alarming? I hope he has taken his own advice and kept all of his money in Peso.
Unfortunately for me nobody here in the USA will exchange them, I have a few hundred that I kept for landing expenses that by the time I go again won't pay for a coffee!

No! Thank you for proving my point about your English ability.
Now let's move on to your inability to do research.
UK had so many different currencies in history and more than Argentina, Idiot.
Wow you have to go back to 2,000 years to get your listing of coins used in the British Isles.
Argentina was so much easier, I even provide dates:
Spanish real before 1826
Peso fuerte, 1826–1881
Peso moneda corriente, 1826–1881
Gold and silver pesos, 1881–1969
Peso moneda nacional, 1881–1969
Peso ley, 1970–1983
Peso argentino, 1983–1985
Austral, 1985–1991
Peso convertible, from 1992
That's NINE.
You listed SIX.
NINE in 186 years!
Who's the idiot now?
Oh my mistake they've only had the Pound for 12 centuries.
May 02nd, 2013 - 12:04 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Oh gosh that made my day!

May 03rd, 2013 - 08:33 pm - Link - Report abuse 0You must really love Mexicans. I have to say......they are great migrant farm hands. I have a lot of respect for how hard they work. They work as hard as the Argentine government works at stealing.
This must be a great pay week for you.....been here a lot. Funy when you appear.....certain other names disappear.
