May 04th, 2013 - 10:54 am - Link - Report abuse 0Troy, its AMAZING here, seriously mind blowing. I'm diving mostly Mabul and Kapalai right now, but then I'll finish with Sipadan. Mabul and Kapalai are considered #1 for macro/muck diving in the world, and Sipadan's considered #1 or within top 3 depending on who you talk to, for large pelagic species. Sea turtles galore on all the islands here. The visibility is incredible, over 30 meters, the water deliciously warm, and the quantity and quality of fish life is mind boggling. I seriously think it doesn't get better than this anywhere.
The prices are ludicrously cheap. I got my Open Water Dive course, along with Advance Open Water, and Sipadan, with 9 days and nights of my own room, 3 meals a day and snacks/drinks, boat to/from Semporna, jetty fees, etc all for 800 bucks. Flight from Kuala Lumpur to Borneo and back was only 30 bucks each way, 40 with baggage.
Also did the Kinabatangan river cruise, was awesome, and after here I go to climb Mount Kinabalu and some trekking.

Brazil bought the whole “Mercosur trading bloc, shared prosperity” pitch, in the name of SA solidarity, only to find that the only one benefitting is Argentina.
CFK also brought along her dysfunctional cousin, Venezuela, and then broke the trade rules of Mercosur, to the detriment of Brazil.
After allowing herself to be jollied along by lies and empty promises from CFK, Dilma is embarrassed and angry. You can bet she has some awkward situations with Brazilian investors and important corporations like Vale.
Betrayed by CFK. Brazil will do better without Argentina.
Not good to jab the giant next door.
Troy, After Soy, cars are the next biggest item brining in desperately needed U$, Dilma should let the cars sit in customs over the winter, destabilize CFK and then “help” the next gov't get in place.

I've never liked Dilma, I think she unqualified for the position and is squandering the meager gains they have made over the last decade.
She knows she was played and now looks weak and foolish.
Payback is a B*tch though and an angry betrayed women with $, a military, clandestine services can do a lot of damage.
I commented on this situation yesterday but I think pretty much everyone outside of Argentina is standing back knowing there is no way they can avoid a complete economic crash. They can only hope they don't take too much shrapnel and will only start to rebuild relationships when the K's are gone.

But CFK is out of her depth and has been since Nestor stopped telling her what to do. Now she is just out of control.
No one really wants to see the people of a country suffer the consequences of a corrupt oligarchy like the Kirchners. It will be the working and middle class that will suffer the most.
Elaine, I hope the destruction this crazy women brings onto Millions of people is so severe and devastating that they actually wake up and get the kleptocracy out of Argentina once and for all.

That being said, it does seem inevitable. If it must happen, I hope it isn't for nought and they do not waste the opportunity to purge ALL the corrupt opportunists.
When I moved to Argentina after the last crash I had the hope they'd learn and instead the Ks bankrupted/stole every U$ in the country. There is nothing left for the new gov't to build upon, no seed corn left for next year!

I can't support the actions of Pinochet in their entirety and I think time has moved on for regimes of his type. What Pinochet did was keep politics, the forces and economics separate. That way he could apply different strategies to each area. His switch to a free market economy was a bitter pill for the people to have to swallow and they suffered the changes for over a decade. (If you talk to people that went through it, it was grim and humiliating). I don't believe you need a political dictatorship to achieve a change in economic model. What you need is a willingness of the people to work hard for a better future. JMO

I don't happen to agree and think they have short memories but when you feel helpless and hopeless it is easy to swing from one extreme to another without considering the consequences.
I also don't know that Argentinean society has the constitution to go through the necessary process to build a more stable economy. I don't mean to be insulting but the idea of working hard to achieve something long-term seems anathema to a large section of the population. (I know that a proportion do work hard and try to achieve success but they cannot support a whole economy).
I would like to think you are right that a hard lesson would be learned and someone with genuine intent is elected next time but that would require an entire shift in social thinking. Corruption is endemic, not just in the government.

As the oft used saying goes 'invest in Argentina, you will lose your shirt'.
Argentina seems to be one of the few countries (with Venezuela & perhaps Bolivia) who think that they can impose import controls, dollar restrictions & peso overvaluation & still expect that they can export their products without restrictions

Democracy is a worthy goal but that doesn't mean every country/society can make it work.
I use Pinochet as an example mainly because he was next door, not all the Dictators were “bad”, his methods may have been rough but I think the outcome can't be denied.
I don't see how Argentina could or would ever “elect” someone to fix the country. It must be fixed with brutal force or continue is grinding pace to turn itself into Bolivia.

If you put every move the country has ever made in this context they are very easy to predict.
I will tell you something that I am sure most of my detractors won't believe but about a month ago I was at dinner with some influential RGs and was asked to consult for the new gov't. I laughed and said I would never ever live back in that horrible place. But it does show that plans are being made.

(I don't think the public will accept this as they are all so tainted). Then there will be a scramble amongst those in power but outside the K's oligarchy. I have no idea where it will end but it had better be someone with the charisma to rebuild relationships with neighbours and trading partners if they are ever going to have a chance to recover.
It is so very sad to see such a wealthy country , in natural resources and educated population , in such a complete mess . Rousseff is quite right in saying enough . There must be a limit to lies and double talk . And also see the comments of Uruguays Vice President . On the same lines ! But what can be done , nothing ! Not do long ago the people voted for this woman , 54 percent , and gave her a Congresional majority . So now grin and suffer . The British did the same in 1974 , voting in Labour , and by 1979 they had a mess ! Unions crazed with power , IMF coming in to save the day and general malaise . Fortunately a change in Government saved the day ! Perhaps the hope is that in Octobers election the people will wake up and trounce the Presidents candidates . Or we have to study , in depth ,the kind of democracy we want or need ! The ancient Greek system - only educated citizens could vote .

Argentine had the worst times for cultural freedom cause the militar occupation in 76, and we still fight against the social blackholes that were imposed in the society, Militars didnt fixed anything, and its proved they were supported by external governments that seeked internal interests in the country. Argentine has to be fixed by its own people, Compromising and organizing to elect the right representation for the country and the secret to that happen, is that any president who comes in power can not be reelected. Its is proved here, that any president beyond 4 years, disrupts the economy. The Politics has to become more clear and for long term directions, and the FMI has to start speaking a more transparent language to the Arg future govs to exchange progress, and not to disrupt development.
I don't know anyone powerful, as a goyim ... I'm only a donkey who was only born to serve israelites according to the Israel's equivalent of the Archbishop of Canterbury (Rabbi Ovadia Yosef).

Argentinas main military successes have been against lightly protected civilian populations - war of the desert, occupation of the Falklands, Dirty War etc..

Models that bring high short term gain always come at a price.

It is the average Argentine, and it is a shame that there are so few on here willing to have their voices heard.

I think that is the reason they have been given so many chances by their neighbours, trading partners and by the organisation they use. It must be like a parent watching a drug addicted child spiral into oblivion, having their help and advice rejected, and having been lied to repeatedly, finally understanding that they have to let them fall to rock-bottom.
Unfortunately for the people of Argentina their president is a narcissist and over-medicated. She has surrounded herself with sycophants and rules by fear and bullying. I actually think those around her will turn on her first, followed by the people. I don't think she will get re-elected. Maybe under different circumstances she could have pulled it off but too many events have conspired to push her into a disadvantaged position.
Maybe this time things will have a different outcome...

Now it's in the news about the environmental disaster of the shale drilling in the Vaca Nuerta. But it is really not a problem because they are drilling right next to the homes and communities of the indigenous people of Argentina fruit orchards. We all know how Argentina treats (the few remaining) her naturals. I think the shortages in fuel for heat this winter will be the final straw. This non visit from Dilma must have put her on a thorazine IV for a week. Would anyone like to guess on April's trade balance of account? And future trade balance considering Dilma is pissed at kirchner's policies, if you can call them a policies.

As far as the exchange rate, it really depends on credibility. Once a panic sets in, the value of the peso will go into a free fall, just as in the past.

A change in head of State may be neccesary and I have hope in this as most Argentines seem convinced this gov. aproach isn´t working.

When I first started visiting some years ago it surprised me too, About 50% of the workers there are 'on the black' to avoid paying any tax. Most landlords want paying in dollars only, to avoid paying tax. Most hotels will ask for payment in dollars cash, to avoid paying tax. (And will give large discounts for doing so). You see, everyone, no matter if they are waiters, construction workers or whatever, will do anything to avoid putting into the economy when they can just take out. They have no understand of the 'Social Contract' that would form the basis of your idealised version of a socialist Argentina.

What they fail to see is that by failing on every level to put into society they are stealing from their neighbours, children, the sick and old. If they abandoned the black market in employment and payments, and actually paid the taxes due, their school would not resemble toilets, the teachers could be paid, their hospitals would not require them to queue for treatment from 6.00 am if they want to be seen that day, their road would be maintained etc. Need I go on?
It might be illegal to pay rent in dollars cash - I never paid any other way when I lived there - but everyone does it. And the police could care less. You have no understanding of the police force there. They will watch a mugging in front of them and do nothing unless they were bribed to move.

I am stuck with a stack of them from my January trip. Bank of America is my bank and they won't touch it.....nor TD North. They is an exchange rate, but it does not mean they have to exchange pesos. But I understand what you are getting at....he sends you 515 pesos at the official rate, you exchange it and send it back as U$100, he converts it to 987 pesos from the blue exchange. You will most likely be stuck with 515 pesos.
