Falklands/South Georgia dispute placed by Argentina under the CCALMR umbrella

Full article 72 comments

The Buenos Aires media is reporting a potential incident situation in South Georgia waters which could erupt into something more complicated from the moment the Argentine research vessel ‘Eduardo Holmberg’ has been involved in scientific activities in a zone which last year was declared by the UK as a Maritime Protected Area, MPA, and which Argentina does not recognize since it considers it ‘an area in dispute’. Yes, Argentina is acting like a petulant child.

I hear the next step is a tantrum in the lolly aisle at a local supermarket followed by holding their breath until they get noticed.

This is going to get Embarrassing for the Master of the vessel. He is going to be pushed to do something he normally would not do.

Is the Holmberg carrying any 'trawl' gear with onboard?

No I know the full details the hilarity of what has developed isn't lost on me!

So let me get this straight, Argentina and the UK are both members of CCAMLR. Argentina submits papers to CCAMLR stating they plan to do research around South Georgia waters. CCAMLR recognises “the government from South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands” (the UK) as having sovereignty over those waters as part of an MPA and it is the Falklands governor (the local UK representative) who makes decisions in such matters. CCAMLR passes the request to the Governor of the Falklands who kindly issues a permit. Considering Argentina and UK are both members of CCAMLR and the Holmberg appears to be doing research of mutual benefit it appears to be a win win situation.

So Argentina has a tantrum refuses to recognise the permit and will now be violating our territorial waters!

    You couldn't make it up!

When she arrives make sure HMS Clyde is there to ask for the issued papers, when they don't provide said papers politely tell them to turn around or be boarded and impounded for illegal fishing!

The UK was fully aware that this clumsy probing would arise out of the venture into these waters by the psuedo-scientific Argentina vessel.

As I said in another thread what mustn't happen is this vessel be allowed to just get on with its work. Argentina must not be a allowed to normalise scientific operations around our territories as it is the slippery slope to more trouble!

We have issued a permit, when they arrive in South Georgia waters we must be there to ask for it and if they don't we turn them around!

No doubt Argentina will howl and protest to anybody who will listen but that is immaterial. They asked to do the research with a body both countries are members of. That body passed the request to us and in the spirit of cooperation a permit was issued. If they choose to not accept that permit then they have to accept the consequences of their actions.

  • LEPRecon

As said above, the vessel should be asked for it's permit. If it cannot produce it then, they should be turned around. If they refuse to go, then they should be arrested for trespass, their vessel impound until Argentina coughs up some dough to pay in compensation.

And since we know they won't do that, then the vessel should be sold and all proceeds should go towards conservation.

Besides, it'll be fun to watch CFK foaming at the mouth, and watch yet another round of embarrassing 'meetings', as they complain to everyone from the UN to the Law of the Sea Tribunal, whilst simultaneously BEGGING someone...anyone...to come to their aid.

Of course that'll mean the Argentine government p!ssing away even more of the Argentine taxpayers money on useless pursuits, instead of doing something to help the 11 million poor in the country.

    #'s 7 & 8
Agree with you both but one extra, the vessel should be 'inspected' for any sign of military activity and if found dealt with accordingly.

The 'accordingly' would vary depending on the circumstances from just being asked to leave, told to leave, arrested etc..

We can't sink it. Knowing the Argentines it would pollute the area for generations to come.

Better to impound it and sell it right under their noses. I wonder if Ghana is interested in a second hand (well knowing Argentina probably 3rd hand) scientific survey vessel, going cheap?

By all means monitor the actions of this vessel and if it breaks the rules take the appropriate action.

And yes, ask the Holmberg for its “permission slip” - then escort them away.

As Ms Rimble said - “the Argentine notification does not give precise details about the research operation area.”

Future misunderstanding can be avoided by reminding Argentina of the need to apply for permission to enter territorial waters, together with a submition of precise details relating to proposed research.

This ship has only very limited duration at sea; it is basically a local shore / intermediate vessel.

If it does transgress, the time taken checking the documents it DOES have could push it beyond it’s time and the supplies of fuel and food would run out.

No doubt they will start bleating but then and they will demand, and then beg, for resupply from the Falklands which could be used for much better publicity than these idiots are capable of.

Cowards she calls the British, when they attacked a small island population with thousands of troops protected by just one platoon of Royal Marines and a couple of policemen. The result of these actions were the deaths of many and the blood is on Argentina's hands, why is she trying to drum up the lunatic nationalists again? Because her country is in the crap again and he needs a diversion, just like they did in 1982. Talk about never learning from the past...she is very stupid.

Together with some from a Grandfather's experiences with them in the trenches in WWI I cannot honestly say I blame the RG's for 'doing a runner'. I have heard that one. Dad used to reckon, in the jungle should you feel anything touch you, and suspected that Gurkhas might be 'about', freeze, because if you did not your next movement might well be your last.
The one I liked best was when a Gurkha NCO came to him and told him 'Japs come', to be followed, 'OK we kill all', Dad said he had not heard anything, all done quietly.

I apologise for the format of my post at 64. I pasted something and it disappeared only to arrive unnoticed at the bottom.

I was told this story by a RN helicopter pilot who had served in the war against Indonesia in the mid 1960's. He had been seconded to provide airlift facilities to the Gurkhas in the jungle.

The Gurkhas had been sent out on patrol to capture some Indonesian troops. The British lieutenant in charge of the patrol was punctilious about the treatment of the prisoners and took their parole not to escape. He was killed for his sins. The Gurkhas finished off the remaining two prisoners.
The patrol were extremely hacked off at the death of their popular platoon leader and said they would refuse to take any more prisoners.
They were given strict orders that they must not kill any more prisoners.
They were sent out again and captured two more. This time they slung them between a large bamboo pole and carried them back. They chose to ford a deep river, and the Ghurkas who are about 5 feet six waded in to the water at shoulder height. Of course, the prisoners on the poles were held at a height below the surface level of the water.
For some reason, it took the Gurkhas ages to cross . When they arrived at the other side, the prisoners had drowned.
It was officially reported as an accident and they were not required to capture any more prisoners. The local Dyaks were recruited for this duty. Someone forgot that their main sport was head hunting !

I recently purchased an 'app' that allows me to select radio stations by international location.
The British Forces Radio, listened to in Port Stanley is available, and one for the Gurkhas there, too.

    In another thread:
    http://en.mercopress.com/2013/05/10/falklands-denies-political-impact-of-argentine-south-georgia-scientific-cruise
The Acting Governor of the Falkland Islands has said:
The ‘ Dr. Eduardo Holmberg’ had been boarded and checked by the British Antarctic Survey’s RRS James Clark Ross (JCR) last Tuesday, as is the right of all CCAMLR members. Mrs Tyler Haywood said the inspector from the JCR had been welcomed on board the Argentine vessel carrying 14 scientists, and it was apparent all CCAMLR regulations were being complied with.
The “Ross” is Falklands Islands Flag. This means that a Department of The Government of Argentina has permitted one of their vessels to be inspected by the FIG. ie the have recognized the authority of the FIG.
    Good Diplomatic move.
