Merco Press news agency, apart from endless spelling mistakes, wrong terms and vocabulary, lack of serious proofing, now they change top-Jobs...“opening words from Defense Minister Oscar Izurieta”. Since when? To the best of my (and many others) knowledge, he is still the under secretary.

Does it matter who he is? The good part about this story is that our defence people are talking to our friends the Chileans.

I do not know why? But Chile has always aligned itself with us. It could be that the old saying, my enemies enemy is my friend.

All I know is, that when we had to retake the islands, Chili were with us and supported us, as much as they could be seen to be doing. Probably at no small risk to themselves.

I am a firm believer that such things should be remembered and repaid.

No doubt Argentines will lambast us about our relationship with Pinochet, whilst conveniently white washing their memories of their own numerous dictatorships.

If I had to pick an alliance with a South American country, give me Chile any day.

Hey #2... I do not doubt whatever you said. BUT, Mercopress is a news agency, not a policy maker!!! I want to be sure that the information I get is correct.

True, Mercopress is reporting the story and the story is that our guys have travelled there to talk to our Chilean friends and that's good.

Nothing to do with policy, all to do with respect and exchange of ideas.

I expect the Chileans were good hosts.

5 .Wangito .Yes , the RCDS team were in Chile . One of the few countries in the area which will receive them !

4 reality check . Yes indeed Chile did support the UK in a very robust way . As I discovered during some business trips to Punta Arenas ! I too was delighted by the way Thatcher supported Pinochet during his legal problems in the UK . And particularly happy when he was allowed to return to Chile .

Pinochet was no saint, but to hear Argentinians try to judge him by their standards is frankly, sickening, none of their leaders abused human rights!

Thatcher did the right thing, Pinochet was no different from other contemporary South American leaders she dealt with at the time. To hand him over to the Spanish of all people would have been a betrayal of Chilean support.

The Chileans supported us, it is right that the Chileans should expect the same.
A debt is a debt, if Chile ever needs help, you can bet the farm, that I and other 82 servicemen will be lobbying our government to supply it, And that is a promise.

8 Right , we have to stand fast with one of our few allies in the zone . Even Uruguay will not allow Royal Navy to enter their ports !
