We're now checking all Spanish tourists exactly the same way and will delay all tourists at the UK border. Of course, we're not targeting them, just fulfilling our EU obligations. C**ts.

The extra checks are affecting the Spanish workers the most-the ones who Spain cannot provide employment for.

You can see where Argentina inherited the 'losers' gene from.

Just join schengen, like France, Potrugal, Spain etc etc.
If you choose to live in a gated community then thats what you get....a gated community.

Dont expect to freely travel into Spain while the Spanish don't get to freely travel into Gib.

    Divas.

The only people stopping the Spanish from free travel into Gibraltar is the Spanish authorities.

The people of Gibraltar have the right to choose their own destiny, especially as it is now the 21st century and not the 19th century.

Spain really needs to grow up, or the UK could take them to the European Court, and they could be sanctioned.

Spain really can't afford to be sanctioned right now.

lololol. #1 - the UK could take them to the European Court, and they could be sanctioned.
lololol.#2 - Spain really can't afford to be sanctioned right now.

Spain holds some 281 tonnes of gold , they're not poor, even in a 5 year recession.

The Total reserves (includes gold; US dollar) in Spain was last reported at 46.7 billion in 2011.

They should join schengen, vat and customs union. If they don't Spain has no choice but to protect their own and EU borders against smuggling.

Spain has 281 tonnes of gold? Why then does the EU have to bail them out? All Spain has to do is sell the 280 tonnes of gold on the comodoties market and all will be fine. Get real.
All UK has to do is ban all holidays to Spain and it will go TITS UP.

When were you last in Spain, you are an idiot. The only money coming into that country at the moment is through tourism and most of that is British. The British government is being incredibly tolerant with Spain at the moment, trying not to escalate things and keep level heads on this issue.
Spain is broke, they have huge internal problems, massive unemployment and the very real prospect of a break away state. Rajoy is desperately trying to find a common cause he can rally his country behind, just like that bitch in Argentina.
The difference here is that the UK is in powerful position and could put many people out business in Spain if travel is restricted there. That is a prospect that cannot afford right now.

Of course@ 5 is correct when he says –

“They should join schengen, vat and customs union. If they don't Spain has no choice but to protect their own and EU borders against smuggling.”

The power of a little scribble on paper and a few antiquated wax seals prevents miscreants and misdemeanours.

    http://clip2net.com/s/5vfEtM

Indeed, the recently identified and imminent threat of smuggling, should be countered with similar treatment applied to all non schengen EU members attempting to enter Spanish territories - especially UK citizens.

”The number of UK travellers to Spain rose by 9.3% in May to account for more than a quarter of international visitors to the country.

Overall numbers were up by 7.4% to 5.8 million against the same month last year.

The Balearic islands was the main destination for British holidaymakers, registering a 10.8% rise.

The Canary Islands received 690,000 visitors, up 8.5% on May 2012, with the UK accounting for the majority of visitors with 10.5% growth.

However, the overall number of package holidays to Spain dropped by 6.4% in May to represent 28.8% of the total visitor market.

International arrivals in the first five months of the year rose by almost 4% to 19.8 million, with the UK maintaining its position as the strongest inbound market with a 4.4% increase.

This represented more than 22% of all international visitors, followed by Germany (16.4%) and France (16.4%), according to the Spanish Tourist Office.“

    http://clip2net.com/s/5vfEtM

Should these visitors choose not to suffer the inconvenience of visiting Spain it be of little consequence to a powerful economy.

”Spain holds some 281 tonnes of gold , they're not poor, even in a 5 year recession.

The Total reserves (includes gold; US dollar) in Spain was last reported at 46.7 billion in 2011.”

Additionally, it is reported that the in unemployment rate is reported to falling over the last five months.

I love the naivete of this one “ The only money coming into that country at the moment is through tourism and most of that is British”.

Spain (Europes 5th largest economy, $1.4Trillion) itself, and its tourist sector, are in no way reliant on Britain, so lets get that into our ... heads first.

Mass tourism makes up about 7% of the economy and the highly replaceable generic British tourists constitute just part of that 7%. (Lets be generous and say 3%)

The beaches are always there, as are the sun and the hotels..a room cancelled from Britain just gets filled by a Czech or a German or a Russian or Swedish etc.

So no you're not needed, welcome for your money - yes especially in the last while, needed - no. British tourists cancelling en masse would hurt Spain in the minor sense. Dont expect Spain to change course on anything, but do expect to miss out on Ibiza. (and do expect a response)

If its an affordable sun holiday you'll be spending euro anyway, pick Portugal or France, two economies very intertwined with Spain and you'll be doing even less imagined 'damage'.

Spains unemployment, shock horror.... this doesn't actually help you in any way. Spain is a reliable trading partner and importer of British goods.
    This is bad for you.
Are you expecting Spain with its 500 odd year history to give you something, to make some kind of exchange because of a 5 year recession in the middle of a global crisis?
(and let us not forget GB - IMF - 1976 Bailout)

Would you laugh (as I have in here) at the inverse idea that in some given time of high unemployment in GB, Spain might lean on Britain to renounce their claim to Gibraltar.

As I've seen before on this site there are some extreme delusions of grandeur.
Spain's 50 million population is too big and its economy too developed and too rich for what some folk in here think.

“The UK is largest foreign tourism base to Spain, 6.7 million people a year”

All easily replaceable. Demand is no problem whatsoever. Other nation markets aren't far behind, are bigger combined, and are growing quicker.

    http://www.spain-holiday.com/rentalbuzz/may-tourism-figures-best-ever-for-spain

Bit disappointing for 1/3 of Brits who has Spain as their preferred destination. Try telling them to boycott Spain this year.

“Spain import 4.1% of their goods from us, we are way down the list after other countries in Europe”

    (6th actually)
So Spain needs little from you. Good.

Hey, start a trade war, they're in the euro and on the mainland so we'll see who wins.

“I will repeat, tourism is the only money coming into Spain at the present time, it is the difference between a crisis and an economic disaster for them”

lololol....so you aren't paying them for the goods they export to Britain. Nor are their other export markets. What happened to that 222.6 billion euros of exports....wheres it gone.

Free goodies from Spain. No money flowing in to 50 million people apparently all reliant on tourism while in a 1.5 trillion economy with 47 billion in gold and dollar reserves and a European net surplus trade balance.

Listen carefully, this is for your own good - Britain can indeed make changes in the world, its a powerful country, but just not of the level you have ingrained in your mind.
This is not only true for far away places, it is true for Europe also. Britain cannot influence practically any mid-large European country if they resolve not to be influenced.
Everything you have to offer is available in the rest of the EU and beyond. Germany and France are bigger economies, and if they don't have it Italy will. And if not Italy then 23 smaller EU and eurozone countries.
One step further on the European continent by train is Russia with a market of 143 million people.

    So again.

Patience, honesty and integrity just for starters. We do not throw a hissy fit when things go against us. Look at the Falklands war, a measured responce, just taking back what was ours. Argentina was very lucky it was a measured responce, we could have inflicted terrible damage to Argentinian infrastructure.

I am beginning to think that Vestige is another flag of TTT.

    The reasons are:
    1) he is reasonable intelligent in a warped sort of way, just like TTT;

    2) there is no way he has been to most of the places he professes to have had experience of;

    3) he did not deny my two posts that accused him of living off his father and never having had a real job and most certainly NEVER having had responsibility for the livelihood of his own employees;

    4) he is very level headed even when things are going against him. It is very rare for TTT to lose his rag and his responses then are very similar to Vestige.

Of course I could be mistaken but time will out him.

'Spain studies retaliatory measures against Gibraltar -
Spain is studying retaliatory measures against the British territory of Gibraltar in an escalating dispute over fishing grounds, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo said in an interview published on Sunday.
“The party is over,” Garcia-Margallo told ABC newspaper, referring to years of softer policy on Gibraltar under the previous Socialist government.
The minister said Spain was mulling a 50-euro border-crossing fee and tax investigations of thousands of Gibraltarians who own property in Spain. A border fee would affect tourists and Gibraltarians who cross the border for work.
Spain was also considering closing airspace to planes heading for the airport in Gibraltar and changing rules to wring taxes from on-line gaming companies based in Gibraltar, he said.
Spain disputes Britain's three centuries of sovereignty over Gibraltar, a territory on the southern tip of Spain that is home to close to 30,000 people with an economy dominated by off-shore banking, internet gambling operations and tourism.
Under the previous Socialist government Spain softened its stance on Gibraltar, discussing other issues without bringing up sovereignty while agreeing to give Gibraltar a voice in any talks with Britain over its status...'

'Now Spanish fishermen plot a blockade in Gibraltar feud -
the diplomatic war over Gibraltar deepened yesterday when Spanish fishermen threatened a sea blockade of the Rock, claiming Britain had “unleashed evil”.
The trawlermen demanded that an artificial reef in British territorial waters be removed or they would use up to 200 boats to closed down the Port of Gibraltar.
Spain’s government backs the fishermen, claiming the concrete block reef that has been placed in the Bay of Gibraltar is illegal.
But the Foreign Office dismissed the claims describing Spain’s stance over the status of the Rock as “wholly unacceptable”.
A spokesman said it was “doing everything” to support Gibraltar’s sovereignty. The blockade threat came yesterday from fishermen in the Spanish border town of La Linea who unlawfully plunder the fish stocks in British territorial waters.Leoncio Fernandez, of the La Linea Fishermen’s Association, said the reef was destroying their business and pledged to bring in the blockade.
He warned: “If these blocks are not removed within the next few days, they will soon realise the evil they have unleashed.

'Spain Rocks the boat: Britain furious as Foreign Office warning on Gibraltar ignored -
BRITAIN reacted with fury last night after Spain flouted an official Foreign Office reprimand by imposing further border controls on its frontier with Gibraltar.
The first incident happened just hours after senior members of Spain’s Embassy in London were summoned to the Foreign Office in Whitehall and taken to task over Madrid’s decision last weekend to impose draconian checks on 10,000 vehicles – most carrying Spanish day workers and tourists - leaving the British territory...'

After all, those “foreign” places can't speak English and are full of criminals. Perhaps you might compare “Spain with its 500 odd year history” to the UK's over a thousand years. Wonderful Spain. @26 How you do try. Watch as Britain SINKS everything. Remember, the Treaty of Utrecht doesn't define “Spanish territorial waters”. Spain wants to “rely” on the Treaty? Let's do the same. SINK everything Spanish. Shoot planes out of the sky. Go ashore in Spain and devastate the first 500 miles. Teach the little slags to behave. Or die! And which British people give a toss about latino animals. They are there to “serve”. If they can't serve, kill them and serve yourself.

You teally are in a shit that an aussie does not back you up in your conquest of a piece of land from an European nation. How would you react if Spain had invaded Britain with the spanish armada and still be in control to this day--you´d be foaming at the mouth . wouldn´t you??
well spain is foaming at the mouth right now and getting pissed off by moonface (picardo) with his stupid actions....

    @34 aussie sunshine
“Who fought your injustices like NED KELLY and others....”.

Whilst perpetrating unspeakable horrors against the Aboriginal population, at the same time, nice.

“..there are intelligent people still out there!!”.

However you are clearly not one of them!!!

This is not about what the British conquered 300 years ago, it’s about what the people who live there today want.

The Spanish Gov is foaming at the mouth because their economy is in the shit and they (the Spanish Gov) are in the firing line. Fu*k all to do with sovereignty.

Or are you suggesting that irrelevant of the wishes of the people, the territory should be handed over to Spain. Pacification by force perhaps, like you did in Aus!

When do you plan to give Aus back to the Pindenjara? Anytime soon is it??

    I thought not.

.....the article was just a bit of fun.....tongue in cheek.....from a Scot...anyone could see that!
.......almost every Scot seems to have a relative in either the States, Canada or Australia......there are 30 million Scots in the world but only 4.5 million live in Scotland.....hence.....the satirical article!.....they will live everywhere but Scotland!

    *51 and you do!!!
I would like more autonomy given to the aboriginals starting by adopting the aboriginal flag as the TRUE flag for Australia and not the silly flag we now have.....I would love to see more aboriginal politicians representing their people in Canberra.....
I would love to see school history books teaching young Autralians about
aboriginal history and less about Captain Cook........
It was interesting to see in the World Swimming Championships Aussies with.the boxing Kanga flag and no Aussie flags to be seen in the public....
Yeah!! The Aboriginals are the TRUE Aussies the rest are all late comers..
