President Sebastian Piñera asked Chileans to forgive him for a 2012 census that a review panel found to be so flawed it should be thrown out, a political embarrassment for his government months before a general election. Read full article

    9.3% of the population 'missing'? Wasn't that what Allende had in mind for his transformation of society? Like Stalin said of the Polish officers found in their graves at Katyn 'They went away.'

    And how did they get such a precise figure for what they have not counted?

    Mr Ed, they can by extrapolation/projection of the old figures and the estimated growth rate. The last census erroneously reflected that the Chilean Population had not increased during almost a whole decade, a very inprobable outcome, even with an expected low growth rate of 1%. But at least, you see here a president that asks for appology at all when something goes wrong. I assume not many of his “leftish” counterparts in the region have this quality.

    I doubt Obama would be that humble.

    @2 and 3
    I agree. He could have side stepped this and laid the blame on INE (which is where the errors were made), but he chose to assume responsibility and apologize.

    @ 2 Manrod, my point, pedantic it may be, is that if you are going to guess 9.3% then you are barely one order of magnitude away from guessing the entire census, so why not make it all up and save time and money anyway, like over the Cordillera?

    I agree that it is good of him to apologise, but will anyone get fired for this? Bureaucrats the world over do not seem to get sacked.

    Giving the State statistics simply gives it ammunition to justify planning and thereby messing things up.

    “ so why not make it all up and save time and money anyway, like over the Cordillera?”

    Sorry Mr. Ed. That's simply not our nature, to make this up as our neighbours in the east are accustomed and resignated to. Probably the reason, why we are almost the only nation in LA which is not totally f*ck*d up yet, as we still have a strong believe in improving and making things better day by day.

    @ Manrod, it was not a dig at Chile but at bureaucrats, and your neighbour's bureaucrats especilly. I hope that I drink enough Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère to help to keep Chile's vineyards flourishing.

    What's happening? The right party? The power of dominant houses? The price of the “cobre”? The society is a mixed from capitalism and comunist. When one of the sides is dominant, the people is tetraplegic (tetraplégico in portuguese).

    Don't worry, Piñerita.....
    You just go out and play...
    “Mami” will clean your mess...

    @5 Mr Ed
    Heads have rolled.

    @9 Think
    If only Mami had had the decency to apologize, like Piñera, over her failure to evacuate coastal towns on the morning of 27 Feb 2010... something that was directly her call.

    Mami's “mess” drowned at sea.

    As far as I can read, it is the Chilean Army that should ask for pardon….:

    Anyhow… You can’t even begin to compare both cases….:

    A) “Mami” had , in the midst of an enormous natural catastrophe, fifteen minutes to react as she did, based on completely erroneous information from the inept Chilean Armed Farces.
    She did her best…..

    Piñera had months to react against a “Statistic Bureaucratic Blunder” that “conveniently” showed his administration to be much better than it was.
    He certainly did his worst….
