A political adviser on Arab affairs at the UN in New York said Spain operated “double standards” by dismissing Moroccan sovereignty claims over Ceuta and Melilla as unfounded while pursuing its own claim over Gibraltar. Read full article
Its going to be very hard for Spain to pursue Gibraltar without leaving itself open to Ceuta et al issues.
No nation can nowadays trample over the rights of the people who live in these areas anyway, its up to them, not the posturing of economically desperate governments in big countries, using them as nothing more than a distraction.
In fairness, I doubt that history supports a Moroccan claim to those areas, which Portugal owned before Morocco extended that far north, and which were passed to Spain around the time that Spain and Morocco were one nation.
That said, the peoples of those Spanish enclaves have the right of self-determination. They appear to wish to stay with Spain - just as the Gibraltarians wish to stay with the UK.
@4 - The self determination aspect is important. But there is a difference. The populations of Ceuta and Melilla are almost entirely spanish. Where as on Gibraltar people with British ancestry only make up 27% of the population. 24% are of spanish origins. Despite this 99%+ still wish to remain british.
Ad to that their territories of Penon de Velez de la Gomera, Alhucemas and the Chafarinas Islands.

Anglo posts here pretending to be an Australian but he is not. He is what we true blue Aussies call a 'Pommie Bastard'. He pretends to be Australian to give Australia a bad name. Pommie out!
There is a very real possibility that Spain is on the verge of financial collapse. Several Spanish banks are close to bankruptcy and if the Portuguese debt cannot be repaid, then Spain will fall.
There are already indications that the Catalans and Basques will support Gibraltar if the dispute develops to a conflict. This could mean that Spain will break up into three distinct regions, with Madrid controlling only the centre, north west and and south east.
It would not be surprising if the areas of Andalusia close to Gibraltar seek to become affiliated with Gibraltar in some way. A sort of larger economic area, thereby guaranteeing the jobs and prosperity of the people of La Linea and Algeciras.
Double standards, double crossing, double heads...sounds Argentinean or is this Spanish traits or both? They are broke (Spain), they need Britain now more than ever as part of the EU when it comes to bail out time when their banks go into collapse. The ordinary Spanish citizens will not give a toss about a couple of hundred acres of rock when they will have to sell up and move to the UK for a better life like the Polish etc. What a load of nonsense that will end in much blame passing by the snide politicians of Spain. You reap what you sew, are you watching and listening Christina Ferdinand? This is a lesson for you too!
@9 Booked my trip for the Melbourne & Sydney tests 5 months back. Return visit after I was there for the 2010/11 series. That was sweet and before you accuse me of only following a winning team I did Perth/Mel in 2006/7 and Mel/Syd in 2002/3.

Listen you pommie bastard if and Australian, who will always be your superior in all circumstances, tells you its 'dam' then you accept that and shut up! You pommie bastards are not the suppositories of all wisdom.

I believe the UNSC, NATO, and the EU should outlaw ALL IRREDENTIST claims, which are always made in total disregard for the human rights of the inhabitants of claimed territories.
@27:
You pommie bastard. How dare you direspect the future Australian prime minister. If he says its a suppository then that's good enough for your sort.
Troll?? Hardly. Misguided, maybe. Angry at something, definately.. Troll?? As friend Conqueror points out.... Not up to it.
A True Blue Australian you say??? please don't make me laugh any more than I have already....... and to prove how Manly you are, you name yourself after an 80's Madonna album...... WOW!!!
How is biting that pillow working out for you? with a tag name like that, You have GOT to be somebodies b*tch.........
The more likely reference is to a John Williamson song of the same name. He was a favourite of Steve Waugh's as I recall. No self respecting Australian would use that I.D. in 2013. Or 'Aussie Sunshine' for that matter. Just my opinion of course...

Aug 14th, 2013 - 03:46 am - Link - Report abuse 0I support Spain's position on Ceuta and Melilla. They have been Spanish for centuries and the inhabitants support this.

True Blue comes in at post 160 but post 203 is a ripper.
He isn't Aussie and his other sock John III (Pope) isn't Chinese. And his English language skills aren't as high as he thinks.
But he is 100% bad at this.
