Does anyone think that this has anything to do with Spain trying to palm off some clapped out old Mirage fighters to the Argentine Air Force?

Once the deal was done, the “solidarity” would then dissipate - it would be a great payback for the YPF-Repsol misappropriation.

    This should be funny!

Spain just digging a deeper hole with the assistance of Argentine!

@2 - I agree. Time to start veto'ing Spanish loans to keep their failed economy alive and maybe some smart measures to stop British tourism from making it to Spain which would cause them massive problems. Personally I think supporting Spain is a giant mistake anyway, we are just prolonging the inevitable.

Threats are vacuous and weak. The UK should just get on with it. Its the very fact that the FO is the “ministry of foreigners” that made Spain think they could get away with this idiocy without a downside. Had they predicted we actually would go after them then they wouldn't have picked this fight. The same applied to the Falklands in 1982. We were insufficiently clear in our resolution and it resulted in a war. Thus what liberals might call reaction or overreaaction, can actually prevent more wars than it starts. So just get on with it.

After all the Spanish sabre rattling...

    - Gibraltar will not remove the concrete blocks.
    - The EU will tell Spain it has concerns over the lengthy border checks.
    - Catalonia has moved a step closer to independence.
    - Thousands of British tourists will stop holidaying in Spain.
    - The Spanish economy slides nearer to collapse.
    - Spain now appears to the world as jealous and paranoid as Argentina.
    - Gibraltar will remain British.

Margallo - brass necked or what! Hard to trust UK over fisheries - rubbish.
Your fishing right beside the Gibraltar coastline, and over-fishing!
Some remember the fishing disputes with Spain in 1990's in northern British waters, the result ended in a massive clampdown of fishing to preserve stocks for the future, after over-fishing.
Are the Mirage jets pre-paid compensation for fishing fines in RG waters?

If Spain wants to abrogate the Treaty of Utrecht then perhaps the Brits should abrogate the Treaty of Amiens and re-occupy Minorca

    @16 Marcos, Marcos....

The “poll” registered just half a million “yes” votes (in favour of being ceded to Spain) in under two hours.

Just to put that into context, according to Wikipedia, the entire UK circulation of the paper edition of the Daily Telegraph is 552,065 (with online readers probably about 10% on top of this) so you are seriously telling me that every UK/ Gib DT reader bothered to go online and vote that Gibraltar should be ceded to Spain? The “no” response was actually more impressive. It was around 60,0000 so I think you see the strength of the [real] opinion is pretty strong.

@21 The Spanish like Argentina have a habit of referencing treaty's knowing full well that subsequent treaty's they have signed have superseded it.

The Treaty of Utrecht is over ruled by the UN Charter, EU law, UN Law of the Sea's & many more treaty's all signed by Spain over the years. Now if they want to ignore those treaty's & undo the treaty of Ultrect where they received territory in exchange for Gibraltar then when are they going to hand that territory back to Britain they gained. The island of Minorca for example according to the treaty belongs to Britain.

@16 Can you not keep up? The Navy is already on the way. That's a real navy. The Royal Navy. Just a thought. If you put the argie “navy” and the spanish “navy” together, they would still be smaller than the Royal Navy.

And here's a couple of valid “polls”. In 2002, 87.9% of the electorate of Gibraltar turned out so that 98.48% could vote AGAINST any spanish involvement in their sovereignty.
In 2013, 91.94% of the electorate of the Falkland Islands turned out so that 99.8% could vote FOR retaining their status as a British Overseas Territory. To help with the math, that's an average 99.14% over two territories in favour of being British rather than latino scum.

How on earth can you justify applying 21st century ideals and values to the early 1800's and against the rightful dwellers on the Falkland Islands. Not only that, you completely ignore the wholesale invasion, usurpation/land grab of Patagonia many decades later by Argentina. You are saying that the “poll” is still valid as it “clearly shows that most of the British people do not care about these relics of colonialism. ” even though it was obviously rigged by votebots

It also begs the questions over Cueta and Melilla. Whatever their history, these Spanish exclaves should certainly be offered the opportunity to self determine their future as a high proportion of their inhabitants are ethnically Moroccan. Denying them their chance to determine how they wish to be governed (as they obviously constitute a “people” in the eyes of the UN) would be the worst kind of colonialism.

The RN'S to Gib. was arranged months ago and they will be visiting a Spanish port which was ALSO arranged months ago. There is no chance of a confrontation between the two countries at sea or in any other military manner. By ridiculous scrap metal you must be thinking of the Argentine navy.
The action at Gibraltar is a nuisance but this has been happening for at least 50 years on and off. The net result is financial suffering for the Spaniards, not Gibraltarians.
It is more efficient tackling the problem through the EU although it takes longer.
Spain is in dire economic straights and needs a further bail out from the EU. All members must agree, the UK says NO ! Spain goes down the tubes

@29 You can have “your” land anytime you want. It is available in plots 7 foot by 6 foot by two foot. You may find the price a little high. In order to get a plot, you have to be dead. This is a service WE are happy to provide. Of course, there are no promises. Unless you are prepared to pay a suitable sum, £20,000 for instance, we may just shovel your miserable carcase into the sea. Or send it to zoos to be used as shark feed. Another possibility is a cesspit. We have inventive ideas in this last case. A rope under your armpits so that you can be lowered slowly. The “cess” rising slowly to slop over your lips. Then up your nose. And you can still watch as your attempts to breath suck the turds in. Alternatively, you could be lowered in head-first. Goodbye sight. Shit slopping into nostrils. And finally the open mouth. Be interesting to see what issues out of your orifices. In this latter case, how to lower? Tie a rope around the testicles. Take it slowly until the sac has stretched to a couple of feet. Then a quick chop, so you can drown and be emasculated at the same time. No sense in letting you go to your “maker” as a “male” when you aren't. Something for you to look forward to.
@37 Love to see the spanish “cojones” as the British nuclear warheads land. The word “shrivelled” comes to mind.

David Cameron has raised concerns over the situation at the Spain-Gibraltar border with the EU – as he considers taking legal action over the stalemate.
In a phonecall to EU Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso, the Prime Minister urged him to send monitors to review the lengthy border control delays - which have been instigated by the Spanish government.

“At one level, HMS Westminster’s showing the flag, and its whiff of gunboat diplomacy, seem a touch old-fashioned ”

HMS Westminster was already booked to go....how is that gunboat diplomacy...how could it not fly the flag?

Well, it looks as if it will all kick off on Sunday. The Spanish fishermen had a meeting this afternoon and agreed to try and raise the concrete blocks from the Gibraltar reef.

    http://www.intereconomia.com/noticias-gaceta/politica/quien-tiene-que-retirar-los-bloques-gibraltar-20130816

The Royal Navy ships arrive on Monday, so the fishermen are getting together to try and move them before the Royal Navy prevents them. Only problem is that the blocks weigh 12 tonnes each and they would have to send down divers to attach the lifting gear. Divers can be arrested and the Royal Gibraltar Police and Gibraltar Squadron of the Royal Navy will be there. Not to mention quite a few Gibraltarian divers, who may assist the RGP.

The news crews have been alerted, so you may be able to watch the spectacle on News 24 or Sky News.

'Local Spaniards back us in dispute with Madrid, says Gibraltar premier -
Spanish people living around Gibraltar support the British territory rather than their own government in the latest row over border controls, its chief minister claims.
Fabian Picardo said he is in frequent contact with local politicians in La Linea and other areas where the 4,000 Spaniards who work in the peninsula live.
Blaming the problems on the government in Madrid he said locals are supportive of Gibraltar as an “economic engine” and want to see border restrictions eased.
He also warned that the fluctuating blockade could directly impact the already struggling Spanish economy if it goes on too long, with construction jobs that would normally go to Iberian workers being awarded elsewhere.
“I have no contact with Madrid, but I have a lot of fluid contact with mayors in La Linea and others municipalities in the area who are very concerned about the effect the controls being imposed by Madrid could have on the working lives of people who come in and out of Gibraltar every day,” he said.
He added: “So often ... the people of Gibraltar and the people of La Linea and San Roque become the whipping boys for what may be happening in Madrid, which might be totally unrelated to us here...'

Spain has blockaded Gibraltar more than once and even after years of a closed border nothing changed.

People will fly or sail in and out of Gibraltar. They will ship in materials for more concrete blocks direct from mainland UK.

Spain has not gained a single advantage so far.

    Not one!

All gain have been by Gibraltar. Worldwide attention. Potential legal clarification by the EU and UN on several questions.

And last but not least and BEST of all, Gibraltar now has a strengthened resolve to protect the status quo.

    Own goal Spain.

    @79 Argentine port

If by the end of the colonies, you mean the end of Argentina, then I couldn't agree with you more.

As for Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands (I can't find this mythical place you call Malvina's on any map), they are self-governing British Overseas Territories, not colonies.

And they are guaranteed the right to self-determination by the UN.

So continue to whine on about a historical 'mythical' event that happened on a 'mythical' island all you want. It isn't going to change the reality that Argentina is fast going down the toilet, and when it does, look out because this time the Argentine government have stolen all of the Argentine people's pension funds.

Ouch! That will hurt. Soon Argentinians will only be able to retire on the day they die. Convenient for the government, no?

    @83 - Steve-33-uk

I always find it amusing that Argentina's claim is SOOOOOO weak that they have to attach it to some other event, such as the death of General San Martin.

Do they really believe that the other countries in South America and going to get an Armada together to invade the Falkland Islands, and then just hand the 'spoils' and all it's natural resources over to Argentina lock, stock and barrel?

Do they really believe that even the combined 'strength' of South America would be able to remove the true and just British claim?

Do they really believe that the countries of South America trust Argentina or each other enough to actually work together?

They really are deluded aren't they? Other South American countries care about what is happening inside their own borders and couldn't give a crap about Argentina's colonial ambitions.

The issue is fundamentally about Argentine jealousy and a dislike for a small non Latin/Spanish community with a different history and culture; no coups, banana generalissimos, murder, corruption etc.

The fact it has a big brother in a different neighbourhood who can put a bit of stick about if called too, also ticks them off a hell of a lot.
