Al-Jazeera despite ‘aggressive hostility’ launches TV news-channel in United States

Al Jazeera is launching a new TV news channel in the United States. The network will be available in almost 48 million US households, offering 14 hours of news each day. Al Jazeera replaces Current TV, the cable television network founded by former US Vice President Al Gore, which the Qatar-owned broadcaster acquired in January 2013 for around 500m dollars. About time the Yanks had a decent news channel.......instead of believing all the crap that's fed to them.......broaden their horizons a bit!
Al Jazeera was my favourite channel during the Libya conflict!

I like diversity. I like Al Jazeera. If you have spent any time in the US you will know it is not all FOX news.

AL Jazeera have produced some excellent news items exposing the corruption by La Campora at the last Argentine national elections. They are available on Youtube.

I think their news is fair and unbiased.......unlike RT, which is a bit of a laugh.
They also have some great interest stories that are real eye openers.
I know exactly what the Yanks will be thinking.......Raghead News!

Hopefully this will help to counter the abysmal ignorance of the average US citizen regarding the world beyond Miami. Al-Jazeera is so much better than Fox News and CNN, the 'McDonalds' of the US media spoon feeding vacuous low-brow crap to Trailer Trash viewers.

Heard a series of clips from street interviews:
most people interviewed on the streets of the USA equate Al Jazeera news and television support for with muslim terrorists, Osama bin Laden, the 9/11 bombers, etc.
Yes, 'ragheads', a la Hurt Locker.

Al J (& RT) do raise a lot of items and perspectives that are conspicuous by their absence on 'Western' news channels.

The important thing is to know enough about what is going down so you can spot the omissions and biases.

Elaine you've been to the USA numerous times so I assume you understand the news in the USA and know how most citizens perceive the 24 hr news cycle of cable news versus all the other news...BBC, PBS Nightly broadcast etc. Those that have not spent any time here other than as a tourist get there info on US media via the internet......like tobi, TTT, Pope JohnIII etc does on his views of the world, and we know how good a view that is.

Al Jazeera English is probably the best news channel in the UK :) always nice to see a news story told from a different angle.

The BBC news service has gone down hill in the last couple year, 24 hr news cycles hasn't helped.

Sky news is a Murdoch corporation, in a lot of ways a lot like FOX (fake) news. Murdoch dimming down news since like the 70's, should of never let him in the country.

A_voice. I'm going to agree with you for once, RT is funny. But in a terribly Russian propaganda kind of way.

Me thinks its about time Americans had a better news channel.

    @7 Yes.

I remember there being a few murmurs when AL Jazeera started broadcasting here. People soon realised it was worthy of watching and not some vehicle for muslim extremists spreading hatred. I think they produce some of the most balanced reporting.

I also think news broadcasting changed with the 24 hour news entertainment channels. Now they look to fill the hours and create rather than just report the news.

They will have an uphill struggle to reach the “yanks” in America.

The ones who don't even know that there are countries other than the States and believe every word written in the bible AND there are an awful lot of them.

No wonder Time Warner Cable dropped them like a hot brick.

Shame really, but why let the truth get in the way of the Stars and Stripes forever mentality?

    I hope they make it.

Elaine your last sentence was a direct hit. Most American's know that is what the 24 hour cable news does......look for news.

Chris you are totally wrong. Perceptions of Americans as knuckle dragging, gun totting, McD's eating bible reading muslim haters are typically what the provincial minded know it all's carry around. Your internet perception of the world is a wonderment.

“Shame really, but why let the truth get in the way of the Stars and Stripes forever mentality?”

The majority of Yanks never even had a passport before 9/11....look at the statistics, they will verify!......They still lag behind everyone else!

It's a shame that the more extreme and dramatic acts of a small percentage of U.S. citizens have come to define their society for much of the rest of the world, in the same way that muslim extremist's have done for other muslims.

My favourite news show is the P.B.S. Newshour, not least for Shield's and Brook's analysis. The respect they show for each other, and the quality of their insights is a model for all others.

If 10% of the USA are biggoted idiots and racists....that amounts to over 31 million. So it stands to reason that those whom have never been to the USA or only vacation........would not know otherwise.

“I really haven't made an effort”

So don't blame me then! Please re-read my post with your “horns” retracted and rethink what I wrote NOT what you THINK I wrote.

I love Americans, but I think the “yanks” in your country let you down. Yank is fast becoming a derogatory term in Europe and I can see why.

It has not improved the perception of America when you have the most idiotic people who post on the internet. Dear me they are completely illiterate and unintelligent if you look at motorcycle sites, truck sites and even Hickok 45 who is a great guy and a beacon of sensibility (a recently retired Uni Lecturer) suffers from the idiots and he is as American as you can be!

And if you can’t take the truth from a Brit then have a look at Bill Maher!

You don’t have to “figure me out”, I don’t tell lies and if the truth hurts as I honestly see things then I don’t know what to say. Do you want me to lie to you because it will never happen?

BTW, the American Muslim haters have got it about right: at least they won’t be slaughtered by these vermin when they come to deliver the ultimate Jihad, the end of all non-Muslims.

I'm well aware of my countries short comings without the need of an ex-pat brit who fled his country to SA needing to tell me. Nor do I need to listen to a extreme left wing vegan comedian to espouse the “truth” to me. But I am sure that my countries' idiots are comparable to your ex-countries' idiots, only we're a tad larger, hence more raw numbers of idiots.
As for you not being a liar, I know jack shit of you and have neither the need nor desire to know. Though I occasionally read your scurrilous statements hurled in the same manner of the Malvinistas, Kirchnerites and Peronists. From my perspective you're just another poster, as I, with some reason of another to be here. Most of them 'are better than everyone else, smarter, stronger, better educated and wealthier, at least in their own kingdom they are. You claim to be a brit.....living in SA,whatever, doesn't matter to me what you claim.
So the truth hurts me? Sure, whatever, if that's what you think from your side of the world......okay, go with it.

I do what I can to try and not let truth get in the way as I wave the Stars and Stripes.
As I tell the RG's...at least the ones I do not know, spend some time in the places you tear into.......internet information hardly does anyplace justice. As interesting and “unbiased” as Mahr may be......America's extreme left needs a better leader than a self appointed, pious and pompous ass who hates anything that believes the contrary to him. There are better sources to get info about the USA from the liberals than Mahr, He's a comic.....at his best and least a hateful dich0tomy to the Tea baggers.

It was only a matter of time before he showed his true face, I have an idea what that face is. You call him Brit......maybe, but definitely not the white anglo saxon variety.

A_Voice is correct in that I cannot go to Australia, I no longer have the GBP 1.5M (USD 2.55M) total wealth that I once had and of course, despite the “special relationship” Britain is supposed to have with the States, I cannot get any visa entitlement to actually live there apart from the three month visitor visa which offers no security at all.

Apart from what I have posted in the preceding paragraph A_Voice is purely an argie troll and of no consequence whatsoever.

As for voice........he's a wishful thinker and pathological liar. One time he is a foreigner owning property in the USA, which many do....just not him, another time he does not need a visa, but he is certainly not an American of the USA anyway. So he is either illegal/undocumented or never been here.
I find it hilarious that he choose Trout Run as his location of choose.....a piss hole of a location.....less than 2000 people live there with incomes at 55% of the nation income. Not he is stuck with that. Worse for him my company has DC just east of there and I am there once or twice a year. So he is really stuck to some serious internet searching getting to know that area. Wait until he knows that we are looking for a new, larger DC just west of Trout Run......lol. The lies pile up.
I think he failed to realize that all RE transactions are recorded, titled and in public information DB's, not to mention absolute identification is needed to close the transaction. Maybe he will say he has a green card.....for buying a house in the USA.....lol

I can see why someone might adopt such a strategy given the nationalistic machismo that infects this site at times. But you do so at the expense of your credibility. You might be successful at sowing distrust and discension amongst your adversary's but it's your loss if that's the extent of your ambitions.

It is not unusual to have a property in the US and poor Pops has never considered the possibilities of why someone would do that. It also annoys him for some reason....normal people would say, “hey great...lucky you do you enjoy it”
He doesn't even know much about the US......I could be Dual Nationality....Permanent Resident......Green Card holder or even Visa Waiver none of these requires a visa.

“You might be successful at sowing distrust and discension amongst your adversary's but it's your loss if that's the extent of your ambitions.”

Well you may be right.....I can be mercenary.....and can spot an approach....
Though if you see the sequence of events......I post on an article.....I am attacked personally.....I respond in kind...
    ...for example this thread...
    Post 1.....
    Post 4...
Post 12.....only repeating what ChrisR said......not attacking a person!
Post 13 a personal attack by Pops.....
After that they attack each other with personal insults.....
After that.....it's like a bar room brawl.....it's a free for all......old wounds and spare no one!
.....and yet even though you had your jibes......no personal attack from me at all.....because no history of insults, like there has been from those two....
You figure it.....and if you watch my posts you will see that I lay off people when I think I may have pushed too far and crossed a line.

Lol. A hint of genuine humility and then you take it all back. I find myself thinking only of hackneyed cliché's so I should shut up before I say something really dumb. Good luck to you and yours.

Oh, and I should have said “What's so FUNNY about peace, love and understanding ”. I'm getting old... It sucks.

Well good luck to yourself......don't be so despondent.......I think you'll find that most people don't mean anything they say on here....in reality, no one likes to see the common folk suffer whatever nationality....
There is a bit of a troll in all of us......as long as there is no permanent damage.....and Pops, ChrisR, Anglotino et al can take it and still come back for more, there are vulnerable people on here......they are easy to spot and wear their hearts on their sleeve......I avoid them if possible...
