    'Setting up an anti-Gibraltar pow-wow'

    How pathetic.

Don't they realize that the right to self-determination is a basic human right?

Don't they remember that back in 2008, the UN Fourth Committee rejected the claim that a dispute over sovereignty could affect self-determination?

    Fools.

I,ve said this before,Gibraltar and Malvinas/Falklands are entitled to self determination but I think they must add some self help ,I suggest 3 years
national service for every person between 18 and 45 and increased tax contribution to their protectors i.e. the hard pressed U.K. taxpayers,

The last time I checked Australia turned up for the Gulf War, Afghanistan, Iraq Libya and by the looks of things might join in with any possible Syrian intervention as well.

“How many children and women will you murder this time??!” Bit rich for an Aussie to complain about Colonialism, how do you think you fore fathers ended up in Oz? Did they fall out of the sky perhaps?

The answer Spain and Argentina have killed most Spanish / Argentinian people.

What I am warning against is giving the appearance of not making an effort to help yourselves,in Britain today most people dont know where the Falklands are,(some think its in the Mediterranean near Cyprus.)
20 or 30 years from now with socialist government still struggling with debt(yes it will take that long to pay)you might not be a high priority,so do yourselves a favour with self help and public relations.

@37 The artificial reef is not a “problem”. It is in BGTW. Spain “claims” the waters. Problem is that, just as argieland's “claim” to the Falklands is a lie, Spain's “claim” to the waters is a lie. It says no Gibraltar territorial waters were specified in the Treaty of Utrecht. Not surprising. There was no international agreement or law on “territorial waters” in 1713. And the treaty doesn't mention Spanish territorial waters either!

ToxicT- post 1982 we have a very efficient TA type unit that trains and exercises with the British Army units here - and frequently beats them in competitions. It also usually acts as the “attacker” in miltary exercises revolving around defence of the airbase.
FI Govt contributes approx £0.25 million a year to the base in the form of houses we build there and other areas. Also Islanders are always there whenever 1982 veterans vist to welcome them into their homes and show them around the Islands etc etc.Br Forces are also exempt for veh licence fees etc here.Workers that MOD has to bring into the base from overseas are exempt from local income tax etc - thus reducing employment costs for the MOD.
So on a percapita basis our 3000 contributes its fair share.
When oilrevenues start to flow ina few years time it is commonly and widely accepted that we will channel a large chunk of that into paying for the cost of defence provided by Br forces.

......so you like playing with figures.....this is an interesting article about costs, ending with this summary......

“A major problem with the referendum is that the wrong question is being asked. Furthermore it is being asked of the wrong people. The Falkland Islanders should not be asked if they wish to be considered British or Argentinian. Instead UK taxpayers should be asked if they want to continue funding every family on the Falkland Islands to the tune of almost £92,000 every year.”

@56 I read that article. I nice bunch of half-truths. Let's start with the “free gifts”. Britain is responsible for the defence of every BOT. Why single out the Falklands? Actually, the Islands wouldn't cost anywhere near as much except for.......argieland. “Argieland.........long claimed sovereignty over what it calls the Malvinas. An invalid and illegal claim. ”it does not take into account the interests of Argentina“ Argieland has no valid ”interests“. ”diversionary tactic to stop the UK from engaging in pre-agreed talks between the UK and Argentina“ There are no such ”talks“. Moving on to his financial ”argument“, I am a UK taxpayer and I don't have a problem. Especially as Goss fails to mention that that money would be spent anyway. It's part of the defence budget. Incidentally, Goss claims he's from Britain. We don't spell ”checkbook“ like that. ”Countries which have laid claims to the Falkland Islands and raised their standards there are: France (1764), Britain (1765-76), Spain (1767-1811)“ Whoops, another cock-up. Britain DISCOVERED the Islands in 1690. And Spain ”tried“ in 1770 and got knocked back. ”Argentina had the best legal case and several times tried to establish its claims under international law“ Explaining why it has refused to go to the ICJ three times out of three. ”the limit set by UNCLOS for the exclusive economic zone was ignored by the UK armed forces when the General Belgrano was destroyed outside the Falkland Islands exclusive economic zone” This is a classic. In 1982, it was referred to as the Total Exclusion Zone. In addition, argieland was warned, via the Swiss Embassy, on 23 April that any argie ship or aircraft considered to be a threat would be attacked. And, between 1994 and 2005, the argie Defense Ministry, the captain of the Belgrano and the head of the argie navy all said that the sinking was a legal act of war.

See just how little Goss knows!

He should stick to subjects he knows about, Robert Bage and tales about Carthage and the Hesperides.

He admits that his article is based on what he has read in the Guardian.

AVoice - love to know where the £92,00 is calculated from? For your info - if the Falklands became Argieland tomorrow (hey I am fantasising now!!)
the only Defence cost saving to the Britain would be in the aircharterflight costs of the twice a week flight down here.
Those service personel would still need to be paid- housed-clothed- fed- trained -exercised etc etc. AND UK would loose a remote but vaulable tri-service training area where al 3 services can combine and use live ammunition in an area where, due to its remoteness there is no problem with the resident human population.
More than one army commander says they can do more REAL training in 6 weeks here than they can do in 6 years in UK or West Europe

So as Germans bail out countries, they should be asked whether they want to continue. And as your logic goes, bail out countries should not be asked via elections.

I really 'think' that A_ThinkVoiceOver has a quota of threads and posts that he must troll.

These current issues and articles are mostly focused on positive Falklands diplomacy and economic forecasts, while any mention of Argentina concerns corruption and the visibly failing economy.

He has become lazy and is not really able to refute anything. He's resorted to being mealy-mouthed and insulting, but nothing of substance - really half-hearted overall.

I predict that one of his next retorts will be, “ I expended very little effort and had all you puppets jumping” or something to that effect, while ignoring that he lost the argument.

I think that puppet is going “back on the shelf” pretty soon.

After getting back from sunny Spain, I must say Cameron is an incompetent fool. Moaning about wanting to waste missiles on a country in civil war where neither side have any love for the UK or even democracy, while Spanish paramilitary divers enter British territory unchallenged at will.

If Cameron is not going to take this seige-lite of Gibraltar seriously, then I wish he would at least do something about the counterfeit and substandard goods flooding the UK via tourists coming back from Spain. Hand search every bag for dodgy laser pens and football strips, etc...and if the queues get too long (6hours say) then just take on more staff (and introduce a congestion tax to cover the costs). If tourists don't like it they can book up for somewhere else next year.

Couldn't help but notice the huge increase in Chinese ran businesses while I was there: easily a third in some areas from practically nothing only 12 months ago. No wonder Spanish unemployment is so high. Who would have thought the Spanish right wing would take their eye off the ball in such spectacular style?

You are right that the Chinese are not silly in where to invest though...they would not last long trying to sell fake Omega/Breitling watches on the highstreets of UK towns at £15 a go.

For: 40 aussie sunshine and cohorts:

Given that you’re so obviously just another nonsense spouting, bigmouthed, frantically flag-waving, ULTRA HISPANO-PATRIOT PROPAGANDIST –hiding behind a stupid pseudonym– I wonder why you elect to live in such a DEMOCRATIC, QUINTESSENTIALLY ANGLO-SAXON SOCIETY? Why not have the COJONES to come back here to Spain and contribute something to your country of origin? No offence, Mate! My wife is a Spaniard and my 4 children and 3 grandchildren are mongrels...

But if you were to come back to your homeland, you’d have to make a few PRACTICAL SACRIFICES –such as a severe decline in your standard of living and having to endure the daily irritations of life in a country incompetently ruled by incorrigible crooks, who are now desperately trying mask their manifest and manifold misdemeanours, by alleging mass contraband via Gibraltar. There is much more smuggling between Spain and Andorra (a no VAT territory too) and between Spain and Portugal but Spain’s current pseudo-Fascist government chooses to try to hide this fact, for reasons of blatant self-interest.

Finally, how many of you know that Portugal has a legitimate claim for the return from Spain of its captured city of Olivença (Olivenza) which dates back to the end of the Luso-Hispanic ‘War of the Oranges’, in 1801??? –the Spanish government of the day reneged on its peace treaty obligations and has continued to do so to this very day...

    Re: olivenza who??

Olivenza is the Castilian name for Olivença, the Portuguese city and its environs, which were captured by Spanish Forces during the briefly fought ‘War of the Oranges’ in 1801. During that war, the Portuguese army also took several places from Spain. On concluding a peace treaty, the two erstwhile belligerent parties agreed to restitute all captured territory to its original sovereignty. The Lusitanian monarch kept his word. But his Spanish counterpart did not, hanging on to Olivença, ‘cos –with its richly ornate ancient cathedral, fertile lands, cork producing woodlands, et cetera– he presumably saw it as a too highly valuable bit of real-estate to give-up. Anyway, the dispute over Olivença has been a hindrance to really good Hispano- Lusitanian relations, ever since.

Fairly recently, there was a bilateral, intergovernmental move to restore the long-time derelict bridge, which spans the river separating the so-called ‘Spanish Olivença’ from ‘Portugal proper’. But the project so outraged Lusitanian public opinion, that it was quietly dropped.

Of course, in spite of its highly illustrious history –especially in matters of navigation, exploration and global discovery– Portugal is a small nation, which holds little interest for the big-time, Capitalistic Media Moguls and their political hirelings –so one hears little news from the ‘Cradle of the Fado’ and also by the way, Britain’s oldest ally, by virtue of a treaty signed more than 400 years’ ago...

Incidentally, the ‘War of the Oranges’ was given that name by Spanish historians ‘cos one of the officers who served with the Spaniards was also the Spanish queen’s clandestine lover. Apparently, he would occasionally manage to escape back to Madrid, taking with him baskets of oranges for his regal paramour –obviously NOT the only juicy fruit they mutually enjoyed during her swain’s visits! And curiously, the Spanish commanding general was so old and infirm; that he directe

Regarding your reference to the view expressed by the Portuguese Noble Literature Laureate, I’m unable to access the relevant “Guardian” Webpage. Nevertheless, I assume you refer to the recently demised fellow who lived in Spain (Canary Islands) was –like me– married to a Spaniard and would of course, have found it commercially advantageous to curry popular favour in his country of residence. In any event, HE WAS JUST ONE MAN who patently MISREPRESENTED Portuguese public opinion.

As we’ve just witnessed in London and subsequently in Washington, the high-sounding rhetoric of The Establishment’s “luminaries” seldom echoes the clamour for commonsense coming from the “great unwashed”.

    Re:

I can’t access the relevant BBC Webpage. But I do vaguely recall reports of the matter, at the time; which was mooted BEFORE international capitalism’s EU AND OTHER SWINDLES were exposed as the moral frauds they truly are. Furthermore, at the time in question, the people of that ONE town USED to get many free spending Spanish tourists.

One should never take media reports at face value.

All newspapers and whatnot are controlled by ‘interest groups’, keen to twist ‘apparent truths’ into ‘spin’ and pure propaganda.

Of course, there IS a movement to unite northern Portugal and the adjacent regions of northern Spain, Asturias and Galicia. In Roman times, these three regions comprised the province of Lusitania, which was inhabited by Celtic tribes who were ethnically different from the peoples of other Hispanic provinces.

However, kindly note that the current ‘Celtic’ initiative, driven by shared culture and language, seeks a ‘New Lusitania’, independent of both Portugal and Spain.

Thanks for your comprehension, ol’ fruit.

Perhaps my problem is that I’ve REALLY SEEN far too many friggin’ places AT FIRST HAND.

Having started out as a 14 years’old boy soldier, I subsequently found myself serving as a frontline British signals liaison officer with the Royal Australian Regt –and forging lifelong friendships with some of its members– during the Korean War. After leaving the army, I worked as an engineer for an international broadcaster –a job that took me to many weird and wonderful places, such as the exploited, poverty stricken former British and French colonies in West Africa –the place where I developed my perhaps hyperactive social scruples.

Reading between the lines, I reckon Aussie Sunshine is a descendant of one of the many penniless Spaniards, who –some 40 or 50 years’ ago– emigrated to Oz, to better their lot. AND GOOD ON ‘EM for having done so!!!

If you recall, Aussie S. suggested that I join him in Melbourne, to enjoy the ‘good life’ under the abundant sunshine. However, from what I recall of the place, its inhabitants made a particular point of telling me that it’s the country’s WETTEST place.

What makes me so angry with this Group is that it’s become merely a vehicle for a plethora of abusive nonsense, mainly based on abject ignorance mouthed by of minority of moronic bloody cretins.

Because you either just accused me of wanting to watch you have sex in public! Or you just accused me of having sex in public.

When I asked if ”anyone ever heard this word before today?” I was wondering if anyone else had got the connotation that you just insinuated.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dogging_(sexual_slang)

You continually use words that you may have once said or heard but without using them correctly. It is quite amusing.

If you had meant to say “is this guy dogging ME or what” then it would have a totally different meaning. It would mean that I was hounding you or following you. If I was dogging with you that would have a totally different meaning. Amazing how a reflexive verb can change the whole meaning.

Which is probably what your brain half remembered from your time of living in Melbourne. However half remembering some slang doesn’t mean you live it.

So yes I am DOGGING you!

But no, I am not a DOGGER. Nor do I wish to watch you DOGGING!

So your posts are awarded a gold star FAIL! You are actually making my job easier!

Who's laughing now? Everyone at you methinks!
