British Foreign Secretary William Hague in an update to Parliament on the Spain/Gibraltar situation (border delays and illegal incursions into BGTW) said that the UK government continues to collect evidence of the Spanish disproportionate unlawful border measures, to share with the European Commission before their monitoring mission arrives and is also keeping under review the option of taking direct legal action against the Spanish Government. Spain is not coming out of this looking good.

If nothing it is looking more desperate and ineffectual.

Emotive nationalism and irredentism AR nothing that the UK needs worry about. The EU however doesn't want this to become common practice so Spain will soon start to reel its head in.... again.

This Argentine troll grows tiresome. I mean if he could think of just one intelligent or witty thing to say at least there would be some hope but sadly not.

Spain is looking as ridiculous as Argentina right now and is covering itself in shame with its daft behavior.

Seriously they are being schooled in diplomacy by the British once more and if that isn't bad enough they need British money to keep their country from collapsing.

Picardo chubby, Hague baldy... is this all the defence you have? The ICJ and European court will laugh you out of the building. Big fines coming Spain's way and court rulings too.

It is interesting that everything that the UK and Gib have done is within the law and everything that Spain has done is not.

But what will spain do next to further their fascist ambitions, close the border completely? Dig up the approach roads and install barbed wire. Re-animate General Franco's body... or maybe re-form the Spanish Inquisition (this won't be expected)?

Remarkable similarities between the Peronist approach to the Falklands and the Partido Popular approach to Gibraltar:

    1. On election, start by making loud blustering and badly informed noises (as per CFK, Tinman etc in the case of the Peronists and Margallo in the case of PP)

    2. Tear up established and functioning agreements and dialogue mechanisms (the tri-lateral forum in the case of Gibraltar, and the fisheries/offshore oil agreement in the case of the Falklands).

    3. Continue to ramp up national histeria, usually with little or no regard for truth or accuracy.

    4. Complain about the UK's unwillingness to enter into a dialogue, conveniently ignoring the fact that the established mechanisms have been torn up by Argentina/Spain.

And, of course, the other common element is that both the Peronist regime in Argentina and the PP regime in Spain are hugely corrupt and face massive economic challenges which they are ill equipped to cope with.

Sadly, it seems that the Spanish and Argentinian people are all too easily distracted by such antics, and that the corrupt and inefficient governments are allowed to survive.

@9 I thought we'd agreed that “aussie” was a dumb, unemployable Spanish git.
@10 It's important that the UK does not approach the European Court of Justice. It has no competence in relation to territorial matters. Besides, it would probably assign a Spanish judge. Given that all Spanish judges are corrupt and uneducated, this would be bad. The International Court of Justice is the best idea. Then the UK can object to any latino “judge”. Wonder why, despite many offers, Spain refuses to go to the ICJ. Not that the numpties have a case. There are even Spanish documents in the Spanish National Archive that say they have no claim!
@11 “Sadly, it seems that the Spanish and Argentinian people are all too easily distracted by such antics, and that the corrupt and inefficient governments are allowed to survive.” Spaniards and argies are lobotomised shortly after parturition. Have you watched Lord of the Rings? Remember the bit where Gollum sticks his fingers in his ears and says “Not listening. Not listening.” Spaniards and argies are “gollums”. Also, note how they like to steal fish!

I mean what English speaker would mix up whig for wig? It is hardly the mistake made by a slip on the keyboard, or by a dyslexic person even.

Now I could see a Latin with pretty good English and an obsession with British 18th/19th century politics easily exchanging the spelling of a political faction for a common British word for a toupee. I THINK this is just A(nother) VOICE of a bitter ex-anglophone: I'd love to know what slight made him so fuming mad.

The problem with the Spanish using pansies in tights to torture bulls that are pre-drugged and weakened , is that they think everyone else, including the UK are pansies in tights.

The Argentines thought the UK would do nothing about the Falkland Islands in 1982, and were proved wrong.

The Spanish seem unaware that the UK are not spouting off what they can do to Spain but when they find out what the UK has prepared behind the scenes it will hit them like a charging bull-like those pansies that occasionally get gored.

The Spanish media have been whipping this up to, anti British sentiment is now running high in Spain. Cars have been vandalised, British tourists have been insulted and jostled.

Would you risk taking your family to Spain next holiday? If British why not book a holiday in a country whose people like us? Portugal, Greece, Turkey etc, probably cheaper too as well as safer.

This report missed a bit out.

“We will continue to press the Spanish Government to de-escalate the situation and to remove the additional checks at the border, as well as preparing prudently for increasing that pressure if that does not happen.”

Getting closer to “time to walk the walk”.

    @Abo Killer
Go to Andalucía, and you will see how economically dependent they and other coastal parts of Spain are on British tourists and Expats, you don’t need to speak Spanish at all. Any boycott by the Brits would quickly reduce them to a level that would make Greece look prosperous.

That’s before we look at bi-lateral trade and EU funding.

    Amazing really,
Those who support Spanish sovereignty over Gibraltar,

Yet amazingly refuse Spanish sovereignty claims over Andorra , France , Portugal,
Argentina, Chile, brazil , and rest of bloody south America,[ if she had a mind to ]

After all, if one nation gat claim and get something they are not legally entitled to,
Or have a claim on , or indeed ever even ruled the place, where will it all stop,

Or will we all end up with a group of greedy vandals acting like dictators,

Spain has no more entitlement to Gibraltar, than Argentina has of claiming Mexico.
So she should really grow up and act maturely and Soddy offy and leave it be,
Before some ends up badly hurt or worse..
    Justa thought.

    Come come

The nasty brits may well have treated the aboriginals badly and disgustingly,

    But to be fair here,
First off, the Australians as we know them today, did not exist then,
    But merely our descendants,

    And secondly,
Would you not agree that the way Australia itself treats the aboriginals since independence up to today, is equally as bad,
Not as many deaths, but inhumanly just the same,

Just goes to prove that we are not all perfect,
But if we learn from the past, we may yet improve our standing.

    Just a thought

    Guys

Aussie sunshine is not Australian. He does not live here. Slagging off my country to attack him is akin to slagging of the UK to attack Think.

Australians are responsible for what we did to the Aboriginals. We don't blame the British or anyone else. Blaming the colonial masters for a countries history while absolving themselves is a trait I would more likely associate with Latin America. Latin Americans clearly see themselves as differentiated from colonial Spain. In Australia we do not. Perhaps it is because we still thought of ourselves as British up until the late 1950s. Hell we even had British passports until the late 1940s. Our colonial times are not 200 years in the past, they are still within the lifetime of many here.

Australia didn't even gain full independence until 1984 so Aussie sunshine is wrong to say it was anyone other than us Australians who are responsible for what we did in the past.

    Aussie sunshine.

I'll chase you down in every thread here so that every single poster on here will remember for years your failure to take up my challenge. I don't for 1 second believe you live here. And it is nice I see that you are running scared.

    @43 Briton
No need mate, it's cool. It's part of the reason that he uses Aussie in his nick is so that he provides a smaller target for his homeland of Spain. I had the same issue with the sockpuppet True Blue recently. They see post-colonial countries through the eyes of Spanish colonialism. They cannot fathom that a country like Australia (and Canada, New Zealand etc) slowly slid from being British to being their own nationality. There was no big bang revolution or war or declaration of independence. Many post-colonial countries in the Americas (including the US) draw a thick line in their history and divide themselves between what they once were (Spanish or English) and what they decided to be (American, Mexican, Argentinean etc).

Australia didn't and that confuses people who don't have a British or Australian background.

Just because you've discovered the Internet and built up to a year 8 vocabulary doesn't give you the right to be an embarrassment to the whole nation. Why not try being honest and call yourself Shame of Australia! And you should be ashamed!! Im ashamed to be standing on the same continent as you. You have no national pride just bogon bundy fuelled crap. So when your all tucked up in your government housing with your centerlink check married to a gin for the extra cash to pay for your shiny new ute, you can be proud to know that your ratshit little life has made the country look convincingly stupider than and shiter than any critic in Indonesia, Malaysia,India etc ever could. You are working against this country just by breathing, ya just a kin chimp that found a keyboard. Now shut up and get lost away from this forum you unit.
