A new British naval air defense system that can intercept and destroy enemy missiles is to be manufactured in the UK under a £250 million contract. Sea Ceptor, which will be fitted to the Royal Navy’s Type 23 frigates and, in future, the Type 26 Global Combat Ship, is a cutting-edge missile designed and built by MBDA. Read full article

    If it is half as reliable as the Sea Viper, the Royal Navy will have a few new submarines in their fleet.

    And since when has the UK had a 'Defense' Secretary?

    @1 As I recall, Sea Viper is properly known as PAAMS. Initially, it was thought there was a problem with a system. Then it turned out that there was a faulty batch of Aster 30 missiles. No more problems!

    At last.
    This CAMM(Marine), produced close to my English home by a number of my MBDA friends, will see off any mass incursion of TFI airspace once ARG/UNASUR planes get within 25 miles of the islands.

    I'd imagine that the CAMM(Land) would be more convenient, as well as having a far more nickname-friendly acronym.

    PAAMS was the programme that produced the whole system that fires Aster 15 and Aster 30 missiles (known as Sea Viper when configured for use with the SAMPSON radar as opposed to the EMPAR radar used by France and Italy).

    It will be interesting to see what CAMM(L) ends up being called. Sabre would be a nice follow on from Rapier now the armoured vehicle is retired, although there is still HMS Sabre based at Gib.

    The nice thing is that these missiles can be “quad-packed” (4 missiles in 1 tube) in the Daring class' launch silos, whereas at the moment each silo can contain either a single Aster 15 (medium range) or Aster 30 (long range) missile. We will be able to significantly increase each ship's firepower. The remaining Aster 15s will be re-engined to Aster 30 level so no waste on that front either.

    Quite an old story this, These missiles have been planned for use on board the Type 23's and 26's a number of years ago.

    @5 Juan

    I'm thinking the CAMM(L) missile will finish up becoming camel in practical terms, although there's never any way to be sure (thinking of the M270 MLRS which aquired the nickname Grid Square Removal System (matching the acronym of its predecessor the General Support Rocket System)).

    The Falklands will have these secreted in bunkers, just waiting for the call. You have to feel sorry for those Mirage and Pucara pilots when the mad bitch decides to do a Junta. Lambs to the slaughter.

    @2 May I interest you in buying a nice tower in Paris, with a triangular construction? If you think that MoD procurement issues have been solved, you might wish to invest in this proposition.

    The Royal Navy has more admirals than capital ships, and cowers before Iran's Revolutionary Guards and the Spanish Civil Guard. It is not what it was, and these missiles are not likely to be what they seem.

    Not an honest answer among you....
    the truth is ...everyone wanted to be a Cowboy and they, as it now appears ...once you take away the Hollywood brainwashing...were the bad guys!

    Three wheels on my wagon,
    And I’m still rolling along
    The Cherokees are chasing me
    Arrows fly, right on by
    But I’m singing a happy song

    @15

    “..everyone wanted to be a Cowboy”

    Maybe, but not in the early 1000s as a cowboy then was the lad that was the lowest worker with cattle-cleaning out the cow muck.

    Regardless the amount of missiles, there is no weight as heavy as the burden of yanqui stupidity...
