My my Gibraltar's change of tact is a breath of fresh air at the UN I'm sure.

Can't wait to see Spain's next ineffective diplomatic blunder.

@1 Did you mean “tact”? I thought it was supposed to be “tack”. However, Spain has already responded. a spokesman for the Spanish government at the UN said “The Spanish authorities represent a democratic country. ”We are a generous country, a country that respects all its interlocutories, and the Spanish Government neither does it lie, harass nor fire shots,“ What a laugh. So many lies in a couple of sentences. It doesn't lie? Yes, it does. Regularly. Take its ”claim“ that Gibraltar has no territorial waters because they aren't mentioned in the Treaty of Utrecht. LIE! Then Spain has no territorial waters. They aren't mentioned in the treaty. But then Spain got internationally recognised territorial waters in 1956 under UNCLOS I. The same time as Gibraltar. Of course, Spain tried to include a ”reservation“. But that has no legal significance. Then there's the ”harassment”. Who hasn't seen pictures of the 5, 6, 7 hour queues at the border? During the Spanish summer? Necessitating medical aid from Gibraltar authorities? How about the Gibraltar-registered vehicles set alight, in Spain, by local Spanish terrorists? How about the incursions into British Gibraltar Territorial Waters by Spanish state vessels and those of paramilitary thugs? I'd call that harassment. So the Spanish lie about that. Pity about the photographic and video evidence of a Spanish paramilitary thug firing shots at a Gibraltar citizen operating a jet ski in British Gibraltar Territorial Waters. Hard to explain that away. More Spanish lies!
But then the Government of Gibraltar issued a press statement. With the evidence. Let's see Spain wriggle out of that!

Yes tack! My iPad, however, decided otherwise. It also refuses to accept that I wish commonly use a word starting with 'F' and mistakenly assumes that I have a thing for 'ducks'.

Anyway if anyone has a spare 30 minutes I highly suggest watching this link:
    http://webtv.un.org/meetings-events/general-assembly/main-committees/4th-committee/

Picardo's speech is quite blunt and I am quite happy to say that in diplomatic terms it was the equivalent of throwing down the gauntlet.

If anyone can find a link to the rest of Picardo's speech I would appreciate it.

Spain has shot itself in the foot, Gibraltar officials would never dare say this in the past, but now that it has a long list of potential human rights abuses carried out by Spain against Gibraltarians the CM feels he has free reign to change the dialogue from the legal issues surrounding sovereignty on to the fact that Spain is an abusive colonial power that is not fit to take over the territory.

The Spanish government decided to detract attention from its economic failure and corruption by inciting hatred about Gibraltar by telling lies about tax evasion, drugs smuggling and environmental crimes and at the same time broke its treaties by trying to prevent the rights of the Gib citizens to freedom of movement. Now it has backfired by giving the Gib government a rod with which to beat Spain's back.

@3 I thought that, in the days of “the gauntlet”, the approved action was to slap your opponent round the face with it. Very effective as the gauntlet was often made of mail with plates of metal over the top. Spain panics! Because all its lies, harassments, illegal incursions, illegal attempts at “executive action” can be proved. The Government of Gibraltar is in the process of collecting evidence instances of incitement to racial hatred. Snr Garcia Margallo might like to note that Mr Picardo is a REAL lawyer. Not an academic who managed to become a tax inspector.

Well done Mr Picardo, its about time people started calling it what it is. It is racial hatred and it is exactly the same as Latam treatment of the Falklands

Then it will be Regina v Government of Spain at court. I don't think the Spanish government want to be taken to court and humiliated in front of their electorate some how. They will capitulate to the British will as they always do.

'Fabian Picardo also accused Spain of “chasing Quixotic windmills” '

Those windmills sure are fast on their feet!
Better to tilt at the ones that are too puffed to move.

I think your link defaults to the newest meeting (at least I think that's why I got the debate on Western Sahara. I think that this link (http://webtv.un.org/meetings-events/general-assembly/main-committees/4th-committee/watch/fourth-committee-5th-meeting-68th-general-assembly/2734882828001) is the one for Gibraltar.

@5 Conqueror. I had the same vision when I typed it.

@11 Rufus. Thank you. Again the iPad wouldn't let me copy any address. Though there may have been a share link if I'd looked. Hope you watched it. Gibraltar came out quite forcefully when compared to the tired repetitive nature of the Spanish representative.

While I'm currently basking in actual Aussie sunshine this morning, “aussie sunshine” isn't. But he is indicative of the level of intelligence displayed by the Spanish government.

Let the border queues grow longer!

Aussie sunshine thinks that this is the goal and, right on cue, and is jumping up and down in glee.

However it is a symptom of the Spanish governments frustration and powerlessness to deal with a more forthright Gibraltan government.

Spain can do anything as Gibraltar increases its presence on the world stage. It even admitted it in front of the C24.

Picardo issued at least 2 ultimatums. After 7 years the C24 needs to do its job and issue a finding on the 2006 constitution and what deficiencies need to be addressed to ensure decolonisation. And to Spain he said BRING IT ON. Quite literally goading them to take their claims to ANYONE for adjudication.

I also laughed where he said to Spain that after 300 years they really need to get over it.

Spain and Argentina have never really understood playing the long game. And it is finally showing.

Where's the bit in the article that accuses Rajoy etc of 'racial hatred' ?

I guess it must be in the section of his speech that he didn't actually get round to delivering.

And which race was Spain supposed to be hating?
Caucasian whites? British blacks? British whites/yellow/brown? English ex-pats? Welsh? Scottish celts? Gibraltarian greys? Strawberry-blonde tourists?

@13 Thank you very much. You have just demonstrated the utter hypocrisy of argies everywhere. I believe I should now write to my MP recommending the following courses of action:
    1. Requests to the U.S. for long-term satellite surveillance of argieland and its “allies”.
    2. Daily overflights of appropriate latam territories by Predator drones.
    3. Regular manned overflights by armed RAF combat aircraft.
    4. Deployment of Apache attack helicopters armed with suitable anti-ship missiles.
    5. Total ban on all latinos from entering British territories in the South Atlantic.
    And then, for Gibraltar:
    1. Deployment of Apache attack helicopters armed with suitable anti-ship missiles.
    2. Deployment of “light” tanks for the purpose of shortening queues.
    3. Back-up by Challenger 2 main battle tanks and multiple launch rocket systems.
    4. A policy toward Spanish state vessels of “one warning, then fire”.
    5. A policy toward other Spanish vessels of “two warnings, then fire”.
    6. Deployment of RAF Typhoon combat aircraft to/in range of Gibraltar to provide escort to authorised civilian aircraft with a “shoot to kill on threat” mandate.
    7. Regular overflights of southern Spain by Predator drones.
    8. All Spanish nationals to be excluded from Gibraltar.
@15 I suggest you take the time to do some proper research. Have you missed the attacks by the Spanish government, media and the incitement to the “ordinary” people of Spain? Incidentally, speeches were curtailed to fit with time limitations. The full speeches are on record at the U.N.
Which race does Spain hate? Non-Spaniards who show it up for what it is! Please note that Spain has recently been criticised by the Council of Europe for not adhering to international human rights standards. Helps to demonstrate what a cheating, lying, scummy “place” Spain is! Just like argieland.

The media and the government of Spain has all the right to express another point of view (territorial integrity, sov dispute, etc), that gibraltarians may not like.
That is not hatred racism, not violence, absolutelly not. If not what are more than half of gibraltarians doing living in Spain rather than in that awfull tiny rock ???
And the video, must have reflected what happened many years ago when britishs invaded Spain....thats nasty, not the video. I wouldnt accuse kids of school of thinking different.
And this Piccardo has a big mouth full of hatred.

Thanks for your advice to research the racial issue.

The internet is quite limited in the reports of Spain using Racism as an argument against Gibraltar. [search: gibraltar accuses spain of incitement to racial hatred]

    There is an old article against Roma gipsies - but this is mainly France;
another is a Mayor's dispute with Muslims about a mosque.

There is absolutely NOTHING relating to racialism in Picardo's presentation to UN C24.
    http://www.un.org/News/Press/docs//2013/gaspd530.doc.htm

This is a lying piece of 'journalism' from Mercopress.

I see no race hatred in Spanish- Gibraltan relations. What race problems could there be if the Gibraltans/Llanitos are of Spanish heritage. What I see is Spain defending itself from a government who has decided to stir up trouble between Spain and Great Britain A government which is making a fool of itself in The International Forums detracting the truth by stating that the Spanish police are shooting Gibraltans WHAT ABLOQUY IN FRONT OF AN iNTERNATIONAL FORUM!! AND SPOKEN BY A FIRST MINISTER OF GIBRALTAR!! This politician has come down to the level of Chavez of Venezuela when he used International Forums to act like The Joker Of The Court that he was...and now Picardo is.
16* I see no race problems in Spain what is more Easterm migrants have settled down in Spain with no difficulties , not like The UK where Romanian European Citizens are forecefully sent back to Romania and I ask myself: WHERE IS THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE?? and where is The Council Of Europe when recent Russian children of Russian Migrants are chased and bashed and beaten senseless by yobs who have nothing better to do than bully newly arrived migrants WHERE IS THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE..and where was the Council Of Europe in the race London riots??? ....WHERE IS THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE?

    19 aussie birdbrain

“shots fired at innocent Gibraltarians” is NOT the same as your “the Spanish police are shooting Gibraltans” - that they shoot at somebody does not mean that they are able top hit the person.

aussie birdbrain asks: ”WHERE IS THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE??
Answer: the Council of Europe is in Strasbourg, France.
