Brazil is pushing ahead with a planned one billion dollars purchase of anti-aircraft missile batteries from Russia in a deal that will cement a strategic defence partnership between the two BRICS nations, the Brazilian Defence Ministry said. Read full article

Russia has sold all sorts of defense systems to Syria, only to have the Israeli air force make a joke of their defense technology entering Syria to bomb targets every time they wish to do so, and every time the russian defense systems failed to stop them!!
Oct 18th, 2013 - 01:53 am - Link - Report abuse 0Fido!!! What's the story sister?? Are you going to move to Brazil (have you ever even been there?), become a citizen, and then join the Brazilian Army to take advantage of all of the wonderful Russian military hardware? Are you still living in the USA taking advantage of everything the USA has to offer? When are you moving to your utopic Brazil sister??
Oct 18th, 2013 - 02:17 am - Link - Report abuse 0There's nothing better than an internet badass. You're awesome Fido. Please keep posting here.
Keep buying Russian weapons......they are great. Maybe you should buy their subs too. I know where a dozen or so are..........deep in the Atlantic and Pacific trenches.

Living in the USA for three months (visitor’s visa), going back home to Holland (to reset the visa programme) and then back to the US without a hint of hypocrisy, the hypocrite.
Now he has “relatives / friends” in Brazil. Let’s hope they are better than him with his bitter and twisted view on everything European and American: but “all done in the best possible taste” to recall the hilarious Kenny Everett.
Brasileiro flip-flops between someone with a brain when he is lucid and someone who is brainless when he is not. I think he has a friend who knows English quite well but isn’t always available to correct the howlers. He alternates between insulting me and then thanking me when I help him (bit like the wife but don’t tell her I said it :o)).
Didn’t Brazil post a ship to air missile battery “of its own” with a statement more was to follow? Must have had problems, but that will be nothing to the problems they will have with the Russian gear: India are already claiming money off them for the junk they sold them.
Hello United Nations. Brazil is militarising the South Atlantic. Being virtually united with all the other states of South America, what is its justification for buying Mi-35 attack helicopters or anti-aircraft missile batteries? Why would it need fifth-generation combat aircraft? Why would it even need fourth-generation? Who is Brazil going to attack?
Oct 18th, 2013 - 11:41 am - Link - Report abuse 0But wait. Perhaps there is hope. Perhaps Venezuela will attack Brazil with its ageing Su-30s. Brazil responds with its even older Northrop Tigers. Would Brazil or Venezuela go for Peru? It does have the Mi-29. Chile has F-16s that could waste the Brazilian air force in no time. Argieland is quite safe. The wings have fallen off most of its aircraft. Certainly all the Mirages are grounded! Perhaps we should just let them immolate each other.
Fido dildo.....please....tell me and all of us here what my Alma Mater is? You seem to have a pulse on me.....spying or stalking?
Oct 18th, 2013 - 02:08 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Conqueror perhaps they are militarizing the South Atlantic in preparation to beat back the increasing rioters, strikers and protesters.....their citizens. Don't guerilla's usually turn into the very same things they fought against?

You have asked the right people here. They have had first hand experience of using helicopter gunships against civilian populations...
Afghanistan, Chechnya and Georgia.
Yes, the Mi-35 would be very effective against guerillas or freedom fighters. If any of your indigenous Amazonian tribes caused bother by refusing to move from their ancestral lands, I am sure that a visit from a few Mi-35's would persuade them of the error of their ways.
@11 Latinos aren't happy unless they are attacking someone. Doesn't matter who. An invader 200 plus years ago. Dissidents. Subversives. Indigenous, subversive dissidents. The police. The military. The rioters. The strikers. The protesters. The poor. The starving. The intelligent.
Oct 18th, 2013 - 03:29 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The important thing is that, wherever a Kirchner/Peronist/argie supporter is, destroy it. Free the ordinary people!
Clyde some of the things the Russians did to civilians in the 80s Afgani war would make you vomit. These SA trolls like to call the US and UK murderers for collaterial deaths but the are clueless to how much care is used to prevent it. Unlike the Russians in Afghanistan in the 80's.
Oct 18th, 2013 - 06:10 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Some will take this Russian interest literally and turn it into the future south Atlantic cold war.
Oct 18th, 2013 - 06:28 pm - Link - Report abuse 0But the truth is simpler,
It’s a trade deal, military yes, but a deal it is.
Besides she is doing no more that say, china.
Or any other countries trying to sell hardware to the south Americans,
But one thing is for sure,
The Falklands will remain British,
And no ? Russia is not going to side with them to attack it.
mmmmm
justa thought.
In a few years Brazil will be one of the most powerful economic and military this world has ever seen. And we will continue pacifists.

My guess is that Brazil will be spending most if its wealth on infrastructure, which it badly needs, you have no overseas territories to speak of? You have nothing to fight for, but plenty to fight to protect from your crack-pot Latam neighbours, that is where your future problems lie.

@ 22 ChrisR
Oct 19th, 2013 - 10:32 am - Link - Report abuse 0Wars are not a source of pride for anyone. So I did not answer.
@23 Is that right? When you are attacked by a cowardly neighbour, fight back and win, that's a source of pride. When you agree to aid someone, go to their aid, fight and win, that's a source of pride. When you discover a despotic, dictatorial, totalitarian regime and go to war to free the people from their misery, that's a source of pride. And when you win, that's another source of pride.
Oct 19th, 2013 - 01:56 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Of course, people will die. But if they are from the cowardly neighbour, the aggressor, the despotic regime, that's their problem. Sane, responsible, democratic countries do not start wars. But they may finish them. and if cowards, aggressors and despots have to die, so be it. Brazil might want to bear this in mind when supporting cowardly, aggressive, despotic argieland. Brazil is tainted for so long as it supports argieland. Supporting colonialist imperialism is nothing to be proud of. So Brazil is a party to colonialist imperialism. Can you get your blinkers off, discard the latam propaganda and understand FACTS? Or is it too late for you? Will it have to be the forced re-education, the removal of the finger and toe nails with pliers, the electro-shock? Don't you worry. We will save you.
Putting aside all of the he said, she said rhetoric, the reason for modernizing defences here in Brasil is quite simple.
Oct 19th, 2013 - 03:08 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Natural wealth and resources, specifically petroleum discoveries.
In previous years, we did not need to concern ourselves with this much. Times are better now, and with continued new oil discoveries off-shore, we seek to upgrade DEFENSE weaponry and logistics. We wish to protect those assets, as any country would, and will partner with countries that allow us the opportunity of technology transfers , upgrades, and joint-venture manufacturing.
Strength and respect through DEFENCE. Or continued Peace through superior firepower, if you will.
Yes....superior Russian technology is certainly the way to go then, especially their sub fleet technology.

There is no mention of submarines, new or surplus, in this article in Mersosur Press, O Globo, Veja, RT, BBC, CNN, Der Spiegel, or any others.
Oct 19th, 2013 - 06:18 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Modern jet aircraft, and modern surface-to-air missiles were the only items referenced, again as DEFENSIVE technologies available to Brasil.
Would we love to own a squadron or two of Sukhoi-35's ? Of course. That well-admired aircraft is top of the line, or maxima qualidade. as we say. What country would not ?
But as the article states, the existing contract does not allow that option. Our emphasis is on ” a strategic partnership based on the joint development of technology.” This is a long-term DEFENSIVE strategy, of independence and mutually-shared technology, and not merely dependence, as in the past.
Times have changed for Brasil.

Oct 19th, 2013 - 07:33 pm - Link - Report abuse 0“Would we love to own a squadron or two of Sukhoi-35's? Of course. That well-admired aircraft is top of the line, or “ maxima qualidade. ” as we say. What country would not?”
Any country with a fleet of Eurofighters but Dilma wouldn’t buy them any because we are not stupid enough to let you have the technical capacity as well. The UK is also going to get the Boeing 35 once the teething problems are ironed out with some of the super advanced systems it uses.
BTW “maximum quality” is not how anybody who knows modern warfare technology would describe Russian equipment. It is true that they can at least manufacture their own jet engines (the Chinese cannot) but the reliability has proven suspect: http://www.strategypage.com/htmw/htatrit/20130226.aspx
Submarines may not be on the agenda but they will be! The “nuclear” subs Dilma coverts are totally inappropriate for the “DEFENCE” purposes you say you need it for. Dilma claims oilfield defence but you could do that far better and have at least two subs for the cost that will do the job instead of one which will not.
Modern diesel / electric subs cannot “kettle” like the poorly designed and constructed nuclear one that France will be making for you. Do you really think that France will not ensure some kettleing happens at all reactor demand rates? They have their own nuclear subs and will not risk a really quite one operated by a SA country sinking it, because whether you want to admit it or not submarines are an attack device.
Diesel electric subs run on the batteries when submerged and are virtually silent. Your sub will be a sitting duck if it is ever attacked by one.
I would stick to B&O if I were you, you might know more about them.
Thank you Chris -
Oct 19th, 2013 - 07:40 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Actually, Brasil has had an active nuclear propulsion program for submarines for 25 + years now.
I agree that it is not that necessary when discussing the DEFENCE of oil operations, but this is a large country we are discussing, roughly the size of the United States.
And rest assured, the Bang & Olufsen audio and visual system is alive and well. I just finished watching Michael Portillo Great Continental Train Journeys (Switzerland) on the wide screen via WIFI with the PC.
Great picture and sound !
Brazil has a cracking military force. We literally would not last an hour of war second to studies. A country this populated, resource rich and big needs all the equipment it can buy and for this I must relutanctly applaud Lula. I may be wrong, but it was him who started a program to renew our defence power.
Oct 19th, 2013 - 11:41 pm - Link - Report abuse 0#27.......Chris........their subs are not know as widowmakers for nothing....lol. A great quick read.....Blind Man's Bluff about the cold war sub warfare.
Oct 20th, 2013 - 03:22 am - Link - Report abuse 0If Brazil was truly concerned about protecting their natural resources and interests, they would be researching and manufacturing their own military weapons.....not buying other's technology with implicit restrictions and limitations. You really think buying other's weapons will hold up they day you need to fight a country outside of SA? I guarantee you that Russia has more back doors in the software than the White House has. Good luck with that equipment with that when it's time to wax on.
