Two ladies and daughters of Air Force generals (but from opposite sides) will be disputing the run off on 15 December when the next Chilean president will be elected. Given the fact that on last Sunday's first round Socialist Michelle Bachelet was only three points short of a majority, and over twenty points ahead of conservative Evelyn Matthei there should be no doubts about who will be inaugurated at La Moneda next March 2014. “In other words her coalition failed to secure the four-sevenths majority required for education reform, a hot-button issue which has triggered the massive protests. It also fell short of the three-fifths necessary for electoral reform and the two-thirds needed to strike down the Pinochet constitution”

    All of these things, if also supported by the people, should not be permanently blocked by a minority of Pinochetites under an electoral system designed by the dictator to perpetuate forever just such a blocking minority. Franco assured his followers in 1969 that the system was “well sewn up” for after him, but its Pinochet who has so far achieved the most dead hand influence from beyond the grave. I mean, education policy ffs, in a normal country that can be changed on a single Parliamentary vote, here in Britain Blair introduced fees by 5 votes (ie 3 MPs) and the government is contantly meddling with the curriculum, free schools etc. Maybe I'd like to use a blocking supermajority of my own against Michael Gove but in the end as a democrat I really couldn't

    In what way? In beauty Cristinita is still Miss World Leader (see what I did there?), but between the two candidates here I must say Michelle comes across as much lovelier and prettier =)

    @4 BK

    Actually it occurs to me that perhaps someone in the Argentine bureaucracy monitors this website. Perhaps they are aware of your courtly musings. Perhaps someone has informed Ms Fernandez she has a British admirer. You will have noted the recent change in the colour of her attire ( she's not listening to Black in Black anymore ). Stranger things have happened.

    You could end up being an Honorary Consul at the very least.

    “First what happened on Sunday: 50% of the electorate remained at home, so despite Ms Bachelet's impressive 47% support, it was less than those who abstained” This is interesting, why did it happen? is a good question to ask, was it because of the individual or the system?

    So the soft commie socialist we were all told would EASILY win in one round didn't!

    It might just make her think but I don't think it will change her “Mommy told you” attitude at all.

    @8 From what I have heard of her, I seriously doubt Bachelet is communist, at least no more than Merkel is, I could be wrong of course.
