People out in the streets banging pots and pans, or protesting burning tires and garbage containers in powerless neighborhoods, while an estimated 30.000 businesses in Buenos Aires City and metropolitan area are organizing demanding compensation for losses suffered because of the collapse of the power distribution system overwhelmed by an extraordinary heat wave with temperatures in the high thirties and low forties. OK people so it's a bit hot and you are a tad thirsty, inflation is uncontrolled and there is widespread civil disorder, but remember we (say we) are sticking it to the pirate Brits and that is what really matters! Vote Cristina!

I am afraid it's a case being of hoisted by one's own petard .
The govt forces the energy companies to keep prices low in order to keep the masses happy , so they have no profits to reinvest in improvements , a heat wave comes along , everyone switches on the aircon and there is a power outage .... and the masses are unhappy .
As much the people's fault as the governments .
Try opening instead is the remedy .

Hang on, shouldn't “public servants”, e.g. Kirchner, Kicillof, de Vido and their minions, give up their (electrical) power for the sake of “the people”? Don't know how 30,000 businesses can expect “compensation” when the government already has plenty of debts to worry about. Still, CFK has about US$16 million and Timerman has at least US$1 million. About US$500 per business?

All it needs now is for another dead-head in one of the generating companies to short out another alternator and it's coupled (3) transformers like somebody did last year and it will be lights out for weeks if not months.

Argentina: what can anybody do with these people - they deserve what they get. You could even say they have it coming.

I find it comical that the head of state, president of a nation is on the national grid and not functioning totally independent. It would certainly be easy to cut off the snakes head if they ever were to be attacked. Of course if they were.....cuntlips would long be in Veneztina.

The won decade is turning into a lost generation.
I love to be vindicated, yes Stevie I do have a crystal ball and it is telling me that this is going to get worse before it gets better and most of the Rg posters on this board will be dead before they see good times again.
Remember all your pension funds have been looted. Gone. Poof. All that is left are Rg gov't bonds.
So just a little more time before the complete collapse. Just a little more time. The problem is even the most stupid and rabid K supporters see that it is coming. There is no support from “the people”.
    I can't wait.
I hope the heat wave lasts a couple weeks.

How can Capitanich not know Uruguay is supplying extra power to them?! If they were aware this could happen once the temperature reached a certain level why didn't they do something about it? The incompetence is staggering.

It was 42C in my neck of the woods today, 38 tomorrow. If the power goes off for an extended period of time, let alone the water supply, our senior citizens start dying. If such intense heat prevailed in Argentina I expect pot-banging would be the least of the 'authorities' concerns.

One time I was in D.C. during a heatwave and I was impressed with the response by the city. Once the temperature is over a certain point they have water stations everywhere giving out free bottles of water, the pools are open for free, buses are free so people don't risk walking in the heat..... Maybe CFK could adopt some of these measures.

@9 I agree people don't deserve it. I think we sometimes forget how manipulated people are there. I have good, hardworking friends in BsAs despairing at the way their country has been driven of the edge of a cliff again.

Elaine, The public transportation in Arg doesn't have AC! The buses, metro and trains get super gross and smell like urine in the heat.
One of the reasons I left Arg is because nothing works like it should. I had a quinta that I lived at in the summer we lost electricity for 5 days so our water tank ran out. The only way I could get it fixed was by getting an Ex President to call the utility!

Looking at the weather forecast it is going to top 30'C every day for at least the next 10 days, probably a lot longer. As significant for health is the night time temperatures are only falling to mid to high 20'c. So no respite at night and this will mean all the building will not be able to cool down. This potentially is a disaster.

    Probably not.

The Cristina Fernandez administration has attributed the situation to several factors: the soaring temperatures that have been recorded across Argentina since last week; a higher level of industrial activity; an improvement in the quality of life of citizens, which has led to increased use of air conditioning and similar cooling appliances, bad management, and corruption. For this reason, she decided to sell all her jewelry, give back her airplanes, and also trade all the hotels and casinos owned by her family and friends back to the Republic of Argentina State. Her plan is to watch their assets being traded to pay the Argentina foreign debt while she would be reading books about economics and the history of The United Kingdom while in jail in Guantanamo with all his family and friends. She also pronounced that in jail, she would prefer to watch regular TV instead of LCDs because she is sick of them. There is too much waste of electricity because prices are too low. They just need to go up a bit so people save.

What I don't understand is why I lost internet for a full day, and there he rates are more than capitalistic enough to provide good service. I bet no one can answer that.

@19 : It's because all the internet providers in Argentina are owned by Grupo Clarin , and they are trying to silence the government and their supporters .
Grupo Clarin also owns amongst other things :
    All the power companies
    All the supermarkets
Any business that puts its prices up
    The Falkland Islands
    All of Europe
    LAN Chile
    FIFA

    Rg stats:
The official inability to face the truth extends to crime. The justice ministry stopped publishing annual crime statistics in 2009. In its statistics the health ministry has reduced the murder count by two thirds by subtracting “deaths from outside aggression, of unknown intent”, of which there were 3,124 in 2011.
    huh?

Off topic but worth noting from The Washington Post.

More corruption allegations against CFK and this extract:

“According to La Nacion, the official books of companies owned by Baez show they spent millions of dollars to reserve a third of the Kirchners’ hotel rooms, whether the rooms were used or not. The paper also said the money-losing state-controlled airline Aerolineas Argentinas guaranteed another third of the rooms, providing a steady flow of profits to the presidential couple’s private businesses.”

No wonder I could never book a room in their hotels.....

“What I don't understand is why I lost internet for a full day, and there (sic)he rates are more than capitalistic enough to provide good service. I bet no one can answer that.”

Ha, ha, ha. Well I think we can! You pay “high rates” to your monopolistic internet supplier, who has to use the power system to drive everything. Using generators at the ISP will not overcome a thing. Your PC, tablet or can on a string won’t function until the mains come back on. I should ask for a refund! And good luck with that.

You could always move to another country like Iran or N. Korea, ask Gollum how things are there, he loves the places.

    @ 9 Marc1
And you are a Brit?. Really?

Then YOU definitely deserve what’s coming. The real Argentines can’t move, the Peronistas and all the argies need executing to get rid of the lazy vermin (all 15M of them): you had a choice, you made it, live with it.

Guys, you have to remember that Stevie is the result of a failed sexual experiment carried out by his parents and has a Tupamaros brain but is living the life of Riley in Europe and his wife who, rightly, enjoys what he works hard for (she is not stupid).

But the inner anguish, the shame for his parents and the utter failure of the Tupamaros is just too much to bear. Now be kind to Stevie he is beginning to realise his whole future is going down the shitter and cannot help making stupid comments like the Brits kill only women and children, blah, blah, blah.

I am Argentinian... I am talking internationally. The whole world know that the government of these nations in South America and Cuba are not legitimate. This is just a statement. For whatever reason, after 40-50 years of moral deterioration in Latin America, now that part of the world became a dangerous place. Argentina today is not the same Argentina of the 50's. Brazil has just purchased 4.5 billion in Air Force and it is not clear who are the South American enemies, what is the purpose of the guns. Why the most important nation of Latin America is sacrificing education and infrastructure investments to buy Air Force jets? Why does Argentina of Kirchner want the Falklands Islands so much if they cannot even take care of their own territory? What are the real intentions behind this corruption and violence horror show of South American society?
