Falkland Islands: Tory MPs furious with Cameron over aid programs to Argentina

Monday, January 6th 2014 - 06:36 UTC
Full article 108 comments

Even when there has been no official reply from London to Argentina's message to mark the 181th anniversary (January 3) of what it considers “the usurpation of our Malvinas Islands”, there was a strong reaction from Tory MPs when it was revealed that UK contributes several million pounds in aid programs to Argentina. “Where did you read that Britain gives Argentina Aid Money, the Telegraph?”

    There you go.

See. The British ARE giving you money.

Isn't that nice of them? It's certainly something that might benefit a few ordinary Argentinians each year.

I suppose you must be able to find something nasty to say about it.

    Am I right?

You do realise that in the course of the past two months you have turned from a “massively undereducated ignorant angry Uruguayan student” to “Internet troll”.

As every single one of your ludicrous racist arguments have been torn apart, and you have time and time again been made to look foolish, you have ceased to make incorrect political comment but slumped into trolling.

Well done...you now exist in the dirt with Jose malvinero, Dany Bugger, Trolly and marcos.

Until Argentina winds itself in, all aid money earmarked for Argentina should be diverted to the Falklands , even though a few £m won't make a huge impact on the deep water port, it would help.

We should say sorry, but while your country bullies a country of 3000, they will get the money instead.

This would prove a great diplomatic raspberry.

Why is the aid needed when CFK owns a huge property empire? Let her fund her own people if she is so passionate about them.

Yes we have drilling rigs dotted around the country, massive amounts of mining equipment, and raping the country. You must be about ten yrs old if that, if you think that.

@17 Do you think it would be a good idea if you backed up your brainwashed mumbo-jumbo with some good old-fashioned FACTS? You start by gibbering about “human life”. What “human life”? The UK supplies a contingent to ISAF. ISAF was mandated by UNSC resolution 1386. Since we have to bear our own costs and put in our own natural resources in the shape of our personnel, we could do without that. But it is a UNSC resolution. Just to remind you, UNSC resolutions ARE binding on members. A small matter that your pals in argieland overlooked when it came to UNSC 502. You might note that ISAF's mandate to free the Afghan people from oppression and terror. Curiously, only ONE latam member of the UN contributes anything. Little El Salvador. Now, personally, I don't consider terrorists or oppressors to be human. So there's no question of “human life” there. Perhaps you could provide details of the immutable law that says women and children can't be terrorists or oppressors. In which case, all women who have acted as suicide bombers and all women and children seen with weapons must be figments of our imagination. Perhaps you could comment on the situation in uruguay between 1966 and 1985? I believe your current president was very active in political kidnappings, “armed propaganda” and assassinations. So you'll know all about oppression and terrorism. Moving along to other resources, it seems that Afghanistan, in 2011, signed and oil exploration contract with the CHINA National Petroleum Corporation. In 2007, a 30-year lease was granted for the Aynak copper mine to the CHINA Metallurgical Group for $3 billion. The state-run Steel Authority of India won the mining rights to develop the huge Hajigak iron ore deposit in central Afghanistan. In a 2011 news story, the CSM reported, “The United States and other Western nations that have borne the brunt of the cost of the Afghan war have been conspicuously absent from the bidding process on Afghanistan's mineral deposits”. ?????

Of course I work Stevie. My tax dollars make up some of the A$85 million in Australian aid to Latin America over the past 3 years.

Most of it aimed at poverty reduction and education (sorely needed in some countries as proven time and time again on here).

The problem is that Stevie is thick. He knows his arguments are ludicrous and he knows he has made a fool of himself...so he has turned to trolling.

Here is an example of Stevie sytle trolling.

On the 6th June 1944 evil British, US and Canadian troops attacked the peaceful sovereign state of Vichy France. Women and children we massacred in this unprovoked bombardment against the peaceful Vichy French and their German Allies.

The nasty Allies only made this vicious attack in order to gain access to the mineral rights of France and the beautiful French coastline, and they also plan to steal the Nazi gold when their merciless onslaught heads onwards to Berlin, further slaughtering helpless woman and children on the way.

See Stevie...as you have proven, you can take any situation and apply a moronic racist slant to it...you carry on doing it, it doesnt wash with us any more than a rewriting of D-day would. Becaiuse you a a racist troll and a moron.

The more worrying thing Stevie is for you, wasting your time spewing racist indoctrinated ignorant bile on here must be taking you away from your plans to revolutionise uruguays energy and political landscape. We are all on tenterhooks waiting for your Nobel prizes in Physics and Economics...or perhaps you are just full of shit.

In principle, aid should be given to whoever needs it, regardless of nationality. The only criteria being it should get to who needs it.

Taking revenge on the neediest section of the population, for the actions of their government, makes us little better than their government.

However in this case it would be appropriate to re-direct the money to developing the Falklands, for many reasons, not least because I would question how much get to where it’s needed in Argentina.

As far as the Malvinistas are concerned, it would still be going towards developing what they consider “part of Argentina”.

I'm well known in this site for my positions against CFK and her “gang”. She, and her “partners”, are a disgrace not only for Argentina but also for the whol South Cone.

But, I would like to remind both, Ian Liddell-Grainger and Tory Peter Bone, that the UK is using regularly Argentine Air Space on its advantage.

As I don't have the right to fly over London if the UK doesn't allow me, Argentina has the right no to allow a direct connection to the FI since flying over the Argentine territory is not a “universal and granted right”.

It might sound quite unfriendly but both, Ian Liddell-Grainger and Tory Peter Bone, must make figures firstly and estimate the cost of linking the FI with London compare to the FI to SA.

In addition, it seems to me that the money is being used to build long-term partnerships with Argentine future leaders. They might prefer to promote “revisionistas” leaders so they can show off their “hard line”.

Direct flights from the UK to Fl will greatly increase as the oil boom takes effect. And this needs to happen, Argentina cannot be relied upon in this respect.

However Argentina closing its airspace would not stop flights from Chile or Uruguay, as it is not necessary to overfly Argentina from either country. The main effect would be on Argentinians visiting war graves.

I agree pgerman. The UK has always had a good sense of taking the long view. Having links with future captains of industry and potential political leaders in BA seems a perfectly sensible idea. I can't imagine it will make a great deal of difference either way as Argentina is going to be no more than a bit player for the forseeable future (and it might be much worse than that) but what is the point of having any diplomatic presence or British Council activities in Argentina at all, if we have no intention of ever wanting our relations to improve even a decade or two down the line? Of course we can call johnny foreigner ugly and stupid and get a nice editorial in the rightwing press but so what? What exactly does that get us?

    Jan 06th, 2014 - 06:09 pm - Link - Report abuse 0

    @40

Linking the FI with Continent while going to the UK is more efficient and cheap than using a non stop flight from the FI to London. That's the reason why it's the regular connection.

It's true that a flight from Uruguay or from Chile could eventually avoid using the Argentine Air Space but for political and diplomatic reasons Uruguay doesn't allow flights to the Islands and LAN Chile won't flight to the Islands if Argentina doesn't allow the route.

It will affect the visits to the Argentine War Graves but, you know quite well, that the main effect will be to make FI connections more expensive by far. Both Chilean people living and working in the Fi will be affected. The Islanders will also be affected and the UK Government will have to pay more pounds for a longer and direct flight from the Uk territory to the FI.

So, I would live things this way. In addition, promoting Argentine future politicians with new point of views is a good idea.

Yes it would be more expensive, and not the best solution at the present time. However the oil business will not notice the increased cost in their budgets.

It is a situation that at some point will arise, and contingency plans are needed at the very least.

Future Argentine politicians with a new point of views is most definitely a good idea, however it is not for the British to promote them. Aid to the needy is ok, but show me a needy politician anywhere.

Let's have for intance the new “Insituto de Revisionismo Hisatorico Manuel Dorrego” that is led by politicians instead of historians and is affording (with public money) the publishing of books that “twist” history and promotes anger against the UK. If you are Peronist and you want to have “some press” all that you have to do is to write something against the UK.

Having some money promoting politicians in the opposite direction of the “revisionistas” won't harm the UK, the FI and Ar gentina at all.

Currently all your political hacks have to do is rant about “your” Sudetenland and East Prussia and they get instant street creed and, as per the plan and intent, domestic distraction from the Malvanistas in a pavlovian drool -- like ringing the bell in the classic experiment.

@48 The only fix that matters is the one driven by the Islanders. International law and the UN charter are pretty darned clear on it. They have overwhelmingly said “yes,” for now, to their association with Britain which seems to be the fastest and most agreeable track towards any independence should they wish it and have repeatedly said, “no, No, NO!” to colonization and annexation by Argentina well before 1982 (which according to “Axel” makes the invasion partially the UK's fault for explicitly complying[!] with 2065, something your governments refuse to do, hence vacating the resolution).

When the woman says “no”, she means “no.” Prisons are full of people who think otherwise (see my parody on what-not-to-do-at-a-parole-hearing analogy from this weekend for further demonstration, #101 in the :“Lion” thread).

Accepting that is the first step to turning the “Hell NO!” to a “no thanks, but we can be cordial, albeit cool, neighbors for now and we can experiment with mutual trade agreements,” which is probably about as good as Argentina is going to get from the Islands which given '82 and the recent childish behavior of your government is pretty darned good AND, mind you, what Sawle and Cheek were available in London to do when Timerman ran away (further vacating UN resolutions) and blew it (yet again to the CHEERS of your countrymen).

As for the Grupo de los 17, what then WAS the chunky milk that you were asked to swallow? You aren't going to agree 100% with everything. But at minimum the 17 should have been given 100% support not for the content but for standing up and challenging the status quo. At which point, a 2nd or 3rd or 4th grupo de los [increasingly more and more folk] can write their own statements and open the door a future of partnering (as opposed to annexing) the Islands as Nixon did to China -- because that sort of thing just isn't on your governments agenda and won't be until they are rewarded for acting like the leaders they should be.

“Stealing resources from Afghanistan - stealing opium for UK/US customers”

    Clyde,

We have already hashed this out with Stevie, just 3 weeks ago!

He was insistent that we are there to steal the opium crop to supply our demand. He even went so far as to say, “ because the US wants a large percentage of its citizens and soldiers to be zombies” or something very similar.

The conclusion of his scientific research was to post one link that showed that when Afghanistan went to war with the US, Opium production increased.
Of course he ignored that civilian farmers need to survive in wartime and it was a great “cash crop” that the Taliban was selling to raise money for weapons.

I gave him 4 links from 3 different news sources to counter his 'scientific' deductions.

He never responded, but he did back off.

Now, 3 weeks later, he seems to think we have forgotten what an ass he made of himself the first time

    LOL!!

@55 Pgerman: The point being that as long as the 17 are met with silent nods behind closed doors or in the closets of peoples hearts, they are just going to be left hang. “Sepoys” as Malvanizi-Lite Axel Org just did in the other thread. As long as people like you don't stand up he and his kind of play-safe-by “tan shirt” will continue to carry water for the hard core Malvanazis and Fascists and your governments will continue to validate their demands for the mythical Argentine West Prussia because it is an easy way to distract from domestic issues.

There is a saying that dictatorships (and on a lighter and more relevant note note, BAD and immoral policies) fall once enough people realize that the people around them aren't keen on the status quo either. And that's where the 17 and what people should have done in response to them should have been.

The 17 should have been joined by a group of 18... then another group of 19... etc. There is a place in one of those groups for you even if as you say it's not 100% on everything... And until they are, nothing is going to change and Argentina will continue to look like embittered ex-nazis demanding their East Prussia, and raging every time people in their “Danzig” vote for something without their permission (or for that matter, vote).

#73 are you asking about the money that the UK gives Argentina? (sorry if not, I've missed some of the comments).

    Have a look here:

    http://ec.europa.eu/europeaid/where/latin-america/country-cooperation/argentina/argentina_en.htm

This suggests that the UK has provided at least €0.9M with an additional at least €68.6M from the EC. Assuming the EC money comes out of the general EU/EC pot then this suggests around €10M comes from the UK (though this is difficult to estimate because of the way the EU funding works, a lot of money that gets put in comes straight back out).

So, yes, it appears the UK does give money to, an extremely ungrateful, Argentina.

Make no mistake, there isn't one single argie war criminal that I would give an amnesty to. There's about 40 million of them. Being Jewish didn't justify extermination camps. Being argie DOES. 255 British servicemen killed, dead, while argie war criminals danced in the streets. They should have been nuked. I would nuke the animals tomorrow.

It takes about 2 seconds to recognise you as being a moron. Morons are easily spotted. Trust me, you're a moron. Have you ever tried to progress to being a wanker? Assuming you have anything to wank. Sorry. You need to be a man for that. Not a huge chance of an argie being a man. Wonder why you didn't send your troops to compete at the Olympics. Really fast over a mile or so. Mind you, they did have the advantage of dropping weight. I don't think crapping every 20 feet was really fair. Still, divots will believe anything.

Until then, the goosestepping Malvanistas and people who see agreeing with them as the “safe” road or way to curry favor with a given, net that sees pandering them to be a good distractive strategy are going run the agenda to Argentina's ruin and a goodly sized block of people (uh you) are just going to keep their heads down not knowing that the person next to them agrees with them that the Malvanista “strategy” / unending tantrum is just never going to work for Argentina.

New ideas are this..new things. At the beginning are not easy to accept. But all of us will have to make the efford to change our minds if new ideas work. “All of us” includes the islanders.

    Jan 09th, 2014 - 01:44 pm - Link - Report abuse 0
  • GFace

@97 The islanders got new ideas rammed down their throats in '82 at gunpoint. You will have to remember that. They DO. They also see how you celebrate it on that coin that shows an iron claw around the Islands (we talked about that before, remember?), how your people accidentally let it slip that you'd do it again if they weren't defended. Simply put they don't want you there, and international law and the UN says what they say goes. You can't force them to say yes, nor can you pretend they only have a “right to shut up.”

Meanwhile, they've had lots of other new ideas made available to them due to their positive and forward relationship with London, compared to their “reformed but unrepentant” stalker in Buenos Aires. One that I think looms inevitably on the horizon is independence and commonwealth membership, and that will always look a heluvalot better than forced annexation to people who treat them as people to be conquered, occupied, coerced or just “ethnically cleansed.” And boy, that just isn't a good look for Argentina when seeing all of this from the outside.

Until Argentina realizes that the Falklanders have a UN-affirmed right to say NO, Argentina will and deserves to get absolutely nothing. They will never get the Islands to control. Which is why your government won't even meet with them since it will put the final nail in the 2065 coffin in their eyes (even though they vacated it years earlier in 82, repeated afterwards and once again this February).

At this point, you have really only ONE conduit forward with the Islanders. A peer-to-peer trade diplomatic and relationship, with some facilitation from London but primarily between Buenos Aires and Stanley. They are willing to try this new thing. That's why they were in London in February. Timerman ran seeing that his bluff was called, your “street” did NOTHING to chastise him for that childish failure and empty stunt.

When you are willing to try truly new ideas, you know who and WHERE to call.

    @97 Pgerman
The Islanders have stated that they do not wish to change their current status.

Argentina has only one policy in mind that is to take sovereignty control of the Islands without out taking the views of the Islanders, the British policy is to allow the Islanders to choose their own and their Islands future.

The only new idea would be for Argentina to amend it's constitution and drop it's claim of sovereignty.

The Islanders should not be forced to accept these so called “new ideas” of yours.

Its simple, the Falkland Islands belong to the Falkland Islanders and it is up to them to decide on their own future, not Argentina or Britain.

”I prefer people with new ideas, people that try to make new things, people that try to find solutions to old problems.

That's exactly what the Falkland Islanders have done since 1982 as the UK have followed de-colonisation mandate by devolving more powers to the FIG, and taking their interests into consideration taking into account the provisions of the UN Charter.

Thus allowing the Islanders to formulate new ideas while the Argentines seek the old idea of Imperialism.

The Islanders have sought discussion with the Argentines to discuss mutual conservation and the idea of trade (meaning the Argentines benefit too).

But these new ideas are rejected by Argentina which makes every effort to live in the 1830s.

    #103 Stevie.....
No Need to get personal , our kid.
By mentioned the fact that some has a little head you are insuating that this is a bad thing.
When my daughter was born she had what you might call a little head and although it was perfectly in tune with the rest of her body , it was to be considered to be little in comparison to say , for example , a grey african rhino's head..
Both my wife and I were grateful of the fact that she wasn't born with a “ massive head” ( my wife considerably more relieved than I , as you can imagine due her still being in the stirrups) so your comments with regards to people having small heads are both ill-inormed and conceited.
On a more cheery note , a second Christmas parcel arrived for me today , albeit late , and in it was a a Christmas card from my Mother , one from my brother and I am also now the proud owner of not one but two pairs of Christmas socks. One pair with a snow-man on and the other with a red-breasted robin , both wearing Christmas hats.
I intend to save them for when I get home as I need to wear two pairs of socks as I recently broke in my Converse desert boots and they seem to given a tad too much.
Can anybody recommend a good movie for this evening as I am having a night off from the gym and we have found a guy in the recreation tent who will loan us movies so we can rip them and return them.
I watched “LONE SURVIVOR” last night with Mark Wahlburg and it is a very good movie although it has a few of us scratching out heads as there are no trees in Afghanistan that I have seen.
I will google it later and see if there are any forests over here but like I said , I haven't seen any.
On a final note , will the person who keeps drawing a big penis on my frozen gator windshield give it a rest. Your skills are not required and the hairy balls look unrealistic to say the least. and don't get me started on the jizz firing out of the end...pathetic and childish....and your head is too small.....
