Yes at least we are willing to learn.

Unlike Argentines who believe in fairy tales manufactured in the 1940s. Australia moved on from the 1940s in the 1950s. The world is still waiting for Argentina to catch up.

    @18 viceie,
You are the non-Scot here. I'm a real Scot from the NE remember.
I did fly out of Glasgow airport one time with my birds family, to go to Tenerife.

I flew in to Edinburgh Airport to be met with TV cameras once in 1991, when I came back from the first gulf war. (Op Granby)

To date, and considering my home base is 30 min NE of Dyce airport beside Aiberdeen. I always fly in and out of Dyce - Business class of course. Always.

I take it you have actually tried to register then? As yet I have not, but I know I am eligible, and believe you me I will be voting.

Now, - You answer all of us here reading this, - Are you entitled to vote?

I'm a home owner in Scotland, and on the electoral role.

    Independence = no sterling

The governor of the BOE was very polite and diplomatic yesterday, essentially saying that he will do whatever he is told to do but a sterling zone carried huge risk. Don't be in any doubt that he was extensively briefed by Westminster before his visit.

The UK treasury was less diplomatic saying basically, not a chance in hell is the UK entering a sterling zone.

The preamble and stage has been set, the NO POUND bomb is loaded and ready to be dropped at a time that suits Westminster over the coming months.

Oh by the way, Mr Salmond has no choice but to take Scotlands share of debt, if he doesn't he won't be able to borrow, that is fact, just in the same way that the UK has no choice and has to keep all the debt so as not to lose market confidence if Salmond stupidly decides he is walking away debt free.

I actually don't think that Scotland would have that much trouble joining Europe, but they will have no choice but to take the Euro and join Schengen and submit their budgets and spending to Brussells. Scotland would then become a European state about the size of Latvia and with the same political clout. That in my view would be less desirable to a majority of Scots than remaining in the UK.

The hard facts and truths are about to be laid bare and will leave Salmond with virtually no wobble room. Prepare yourselves for the NO POUND bomb Scotland, its on its way.

The UK has no choice but to guarantee it will cover Scotlands share of the debt. But if Salmond doesn't take any of the debt of his own volition, Scotland will be deemed by the markets as too risky to lend to, Salmond is in a really difficult spot on that one.

The new utopian Scottish economy will be heavily reliant on north sea oil revenues. If the rUK is in a sterling zone with Scotland and oil prices drop, that is great news for the UK but very bad for Scotland as they won't be able to pay their way. They will have to raise taxes massively and the rUK would be liable to bail them out.

That is why there is no way the UK are getting involved in a Sterling zone.

The seeds of doubt are only being planted at the moment, the UK will wait until quite late to tell Salmond that the sterling zone is definitely not happening so he has less time to bake up an alternative and feed it to the Scottish people. The majority of information from Westminster prior to September will be ambiguous and non-committal so as to give Salmond no time what so ever to have any B-plan right at the end. Quite clever really.

Yes you are right...but you are also wrong...the UK in the case of a Yes vote will not under any circumstances prevent Scotland from using the Pound....it is not in their interest...a deal will occur and Scotland will lose a little of its Sovereignty, but will still be independent...in much the same way the UK has with the EU....

Im always astonished when I hear Scottish Nationalists stating what the UK will have to do in the event of Scotland becoming independent. It is absolutely not in the UK's interests to be part of a sterling zone, that decision, i'm afraid, is one for the rest of the UK.
The problem for the Scottish Nationalists is that they know this full well and all they can answer it with is “well its in your interests”.
No it is not the rUK's interests to be getting involved in a very risky sterling zone, we will just keep it as it is thank you. I am English and I would like to have a say in whether or not I want my country to be liable for the debt of a foreign country.

I am afraid that the sterling question will probably be the undoing of the SNP.

Wrong, in the event of independence the BOE will have no jurisdiction or liability over foreign country, they can't lift it up and take it with them im afraid. The Pound is the currency of the UK, if you leave the UK, you have no pound, unless of course you are able to convince westminster and the treasury to the contrary.

An article about a Falkland Islands legislator visiting Australia and most of the comments are about Scotland lol.

    @8 A_Voice & @37 Narine/Tobias

We may not know much but, as Tobias' thoughtfully provided semi-serious video clearly demonstrates, we DO have the ability to laugh at ourselves as well as acknowledge our many foibles.

What most foreigners don't realise about Australians is we'll test you and test and test you but once you have demonstrated that you can take it - we'll adopt you for life.

I'm glad Mr Summers is here and has the opportunity to speak about his home. Whether it will greatly increase awareness of the issues concerning the Falklands I can't say but it can't hurt that his accent is almost perfectly pitched between a Home Counties accent and an Australian accent.

Australians might not know much but we know how to prevent 28% inflation, military coups, police strikes that affect public safety and blackouts lasting weeks on end. Oh and how to pay back don't. But that's right, you're French. So I guess we know how to beat the Germans when needed, how to not get caught should we decide to sink a Greenpeace vessel and how to run a budget surplus.

    Still boring A_Voice

Anything else I need to know about Australia?”

Well I'm hoping I have at least one of each. A murderer, rapist and thief. A trifecta win when you think about it. I mean the ones sent to Australia were supposed to be punished! AND THEY GAVE THEM AUSTRALIA. LOL. Sometimes you just have to chuckle at giving an entire continent to people who were deported for crimes.

Now I know that one of my English ancestors emigrated 100 years ago. Unfortunately I'm unsure how my Scottish ancestors got here (Ayr) or my Irish ancestors. Or my Spanish ones for that matter. The Danish ones were migrants via England.

But the result is the same. I, along with 23 million others, get to enjoy one of the world's richest, safest, most stable and prosperous countries. The only nation encompassing an entire continent. The first in history. And the last.

So I don't know what crimes my ancestors may have committed but jeez I'm thankful that they did. Every day.

As for what you don't know about Australia. Well that will fill a book wouldn't it. But you know enough to make me smug. Oh so smug.

Australia is now a nation and encompasses the entire continent.

I'm sure your YouTube clip was awesome but I never check so I'll take your word.

You seem a little out of your depth so here's a good visual aid to show how many nations there were.

    http://www.abc.net.au/indigenous/map/

I don't think you are capable of understanding the differences between all the different nations, people, language groups and tribes that existed before Europeans colonised.

But we are the first nation to span a continent. And will be the last.

    @51 paulcedron,
One man's meat is another man's poison.
l love the Falklands, great place for bringing up children.
There is only one drawback, the glowering, aggressive, belligerent, hulking entity to the west....................Argentina.
Take away Argentina's ridiculous, immoral attitudes, and.....................it would indeed be paradise in the Falklands.
btw-you don't have to live here, so why are you so negative & angry?
Could it be that you are, in fact, jealous?
There is no need to be jealous, as Argentina, managed correctly(as you plonkers cannot do)should be a very prosperous country.
ln fact, Argentina is too good for you.
And fyi, my next choice after the Falklands is Australia.
Great country, great potential. Just politicians let it down(don't they in any country?)
Further more, barely a quarter of the settlers up to Federation in 1901 had SOME convict ancestery.
l have many relations in Australia & as far as l could research, none were convicts.
Anyway, that sometimes was no big deal. Some starving people were transported for stealing a loaf of bread. Real hardened criminals, eh?
Just as a matter of interest, a convict transport mutinied off the coast of Uruguay & the convicts(mainly women)made it ashore & were absorbed into the Uruguayan population. They escaped their fate in Australia.....

A_HOLEs bagpipes, well and truly punctured! And, if the Scotch vote for separation we, the rest of the UK will have a vote in OUR parliament on whether we should let the Scotch have any say on our pound. And,...the answer will be quote rightly, no! Swivel on that....

And, Paul, if you should wish us to list RGlands shortcomings there aren't enough characters. But, here are a few... corruption, crime, financial disaster area, population too stupid corrupt and lazy to exploit fantastic natural resources, international pariah shunndf by civilised nations, oppressed indiginous population, failing public infrastructure... to say nothing of the villa miserias, cartoneros, piles of rubbish, bars on windows, no go areas. None of which exists in our Falkland Islands. Just quiet, peaceful, crime and corruption free happy wealthy people dining on nice lamb and Waitrose and M&S fare.

@13 I don't believe you've yet told us how Daa, Doo and the other RON are?
@36 You are quite right. It's true that the UK cannot stop Scotland using the pound sterling INFORMALLY. Although Scotland should remain aware of the international penalties for counterfeiting and forgery. But the people of ENGLAND will not stand for the Bank of ENGLAND being Scotland's “lender of last resort”. After all, Scotland already owes England more than £2 quadrillion, and that's increasing every day. You know, principal times 5% compound interest for 300 years. Equally funny is how some Scots think that the last 50 years negates the previous 260. And they have the cheek to demand “their” gas and oil AND 9% of OUR assets. If they go independent, they'll get the land. They should be grateful. One meanders around sites reading comments from uneducated Scots conned by Salmond and realise that they don't have a clue.
@40 The Bank of England will NOT be “lender of last resort” for Scotland.
@47 What do you expect? PR-minded “Scots” like to display their “knowledge”. Unfortunately, such “Scots” have forgotten that the wind whistles up their kilts and, through lack of underwear, freezes their nads, where they keep their brains, off. They meander pointlessly after a fish-face with a name like Salmon(d) into oblivion. Even “semi-regular Scots” need an education system. “Electoral role”. Hahahahaha.

Thes guys arrived at Port Wakefield in July 1853 on the ship Malacca after a 70 passage from Montevideo to work for the Burra Patent Copper Company.
They appear regularly on the police blotters of the time for knife fighting but as they spoke no English the magistrates usually dismissed the cases!
Unfortunately there are no records of who they were and where they came from in Uruguay, so their story is a dead end from this country

Tobias, it would taken just a few mouse clicks to discover how much land, through Native Title and previous legislation, has been returned to our indigenous brothers and sisters. Here's the short version: 1 801 779 square km. Collectively more than the entire nation of Iran. Or Peru. Or Columbia. Or Bolivia. The figures are are accurate to the previous December. There are many more claims to come. If you are genuinely interested in the subject of Aboriginal rights I suggest you find a clip of Paul Keating's Redfern speech which is one of the most powerful I've ever heard.

Btw - why do you keep setting yourself up like this for? You're a young man in the prime of his life, on vacation I understand. Why don't you go out and have some fun? When you get older, if you are working full-time and start a family you won't have the freedom to just do whatever you feel like.

    @69 Redpoll

Good story. All I could discover ( forgive me if you already know this ) was how many mules died ( lots ) and the confusion over whether the origin of the name Mintaro belongs to the muleteers or to the local Aboriginal people - the Ngadjuri people.

    WA? Heres a story.
An embellishment on an old joke.
The Parliament of the State of Western Australia sitting in plenary session in Perth found themselves with very little to do or indeed justify their very existence to the voters so the proposal of the MP for Payne’s End was listened to with attention.
“Yer honours, the Poms have some fella called a Poet Laureate as an official poet. I think we in WA should go down the same track”
After much debate it was agreed to set up a Royal Commission to invite and scrutinize entries and to report within 36 months. The competition was duly advertised and a flood of entries were received almost all of which were rejected and the short list was finally reduced to two. One was a professor of literature at Fremantle Uni, the other an aboriginal stockman from Esperance and as a tie breaker they were both called before the Commission and given two minutes to compose a poem containing the word Timbuktu.
The professor was first to recite his efforts.
    “Through the whispering desert sand
    Winds a lonely caravan
One by one and two by two
    Destination Timbuktu”

Then it was the stockman’s turn.
“Tim an me a courtin went
Found three whores in a pop up tent
They was three and we was two
So I buck one and Timbuktu”

Go on mate – you know which way they voted!!!

Why do tourists visit small islands ? Because they want to !!!!
There is a small but viable market for this “eco” tourism.

If they want music, culture, food, art etc, they visit European destinations..NOT ARGENTINA.

Mountains- in the Falklands =plenty and easy to ascend.
Lakes-the lake district nr to Fox Bay
Ski resorts?-there are no ski resorts in Bermuda either
Waterfalls-yes in the Mt Adam range-one gives you eternal youth by drinking from it.
Glaciers? How many tourist resorts in the world have glaciers-Bermuda, India, Seychelles?
Art-nature is art-plenty in Falklands-ever smelt a Vanilla Daisy intermingled with Cinnamon grass?-that's art-so are the shipwrecks in Stanley harbour.
Architecture-the whalebone arch at Stanley cathedral, Jubillee Villas-the shepherd huts s on Weddell Island wallpapered with 19th century newspapers-suits me.

Military history=several interesting sites where Argentines got the sh*t kicked out of them after their Imperialist venture that disappeared down the tubes.

    @64 redpoll,
l read it in a book many years ago, but l've found some information on the net.
The ship was called the Lady Shore & the incident happened in 1797.
To garrison the new colony of New South Wales(which comprised all of Australia except Western Australia)the government raised the New South Wales Corp.
l guess the best troops were fighting in the Napoleonic wars so all the dregs of society were employed & drafted into the NSWC.
There was a detachment of the NSWCorps on board the Lady Shore comprising former French POWs.
These are the ones who began the mutiny.
lf you google Lady Shore Mutiny, there are a few articles about it.
    Some are conflicting.
One says that the female convicts were landed in BsAs, another in Montevideo.
Be as that may, the fact is that 66 British female convicts have added to the Latin Am genepool! lol!
    Good luck in your research.
btw- l haven't forgotten your request for information re cousins in both the British & German fleets in the Battle of the Falklands in 1914.
Just can't remember the book that it was in & to date haven't found anything on the net.

Yes we stole the land. WE don't blame anyone else. WE don't blame Europeans or the British. WE don't draw a line in the sand and say that WE absolve ourselves of our past because we are now Australians and the dispossessors weren't. To answer your question, yes and no. Yes we are giving back as much land as we are able to the people dispossessed of it and no we cannot do this to all claimants. As Heisenbergcontext said, nearly 25% of Australia's land is now subject to native title. What's the figure for Argentina?

    British Empire = 33,400,000 km2
    Mongol Empire = 33,000,000 km2
    Russian Empire = 22,800,000 km2
    Spanish Empire 19,400,000 km2

Do you notice that the mentally feeble “ron57”/ “Sussie” troll is suddenly extremely flue tin English - to get a message across.

This is a direct parallel to Brassiero who normally speaks gibberish, but on occasion is clear and lucid with a targeted statement.

Both appear to be run by a group of puppeteers, some with more skills than others.

While those two may be entrusted to simpletons most of the time, just to distract with 'covering fire', sometimes a La Campora 'supervisor' like BK takes over for the weekend, or a Level 2, “El Roca grade”, 'Master' puppeteer like Think will sub for a post or two.

I wonder if they have cut back on staff, and now each Troll manages more socks??

I “THINK” that the Falklanders would actually be in agreement with you on this one !

As for Carmina Burana, try the original from the New London Consort conducted by Philip Picket. These are available on two albums and are played on original musical instruments of the time using the music written on the original manuscripts. The female soloist -Catherine Bott- has a beautiful voice.

I have been both to the Seychelles and Fiji.

Look at Mahé on a map. You will see that there is a central range of hills at 470 metres Praslin, La Digue also have areas well above any affect of the ice caps melting.
The main islands in Fiji are also mountainous and apart from the smaller atolls, the bulk of the land would be largely unaffected

The affect on Argentina would be that B.A.,Rosario, Santa Fé would be well under the sea, as would other coastal settlements.
Yes, bits of the Falklands would be underwater but there is still a lot of land above 100 metres.
It appears that Argentina would come off worst.

I take it that you are a child and/or a product of the Argentine education system.
    Not very impressive !

    2) As you (as an English teacher in a Spanish speaking country) surely knew, and as your link above confirms, the Pacific Ocean Solomon Islands are called ISLAS SALOMON in Spanish (And in French, Portuguese and Italian)....

    3) As you maybe don't know, the Indian Ocean Salomon Islands hicht is even lower than Pacific Ocean Solomon Islands.....

    Full of stupid inaccuracies..see#130

Salomon Islands. Highest point about 10 metres
Diego Garcia Highest point about 20 metres. Mean height about 2 metres

At last a sensible point about the Chagossians. This island chain will be uninhabitable with even a small rise in sea level
In that case they are better off out of it. Put them back and they would drown...
the Argentinian solution ! We have actually saved their lives by giving them money and settling them on Mauritius.

Basically, what you are saying is, Think likes it so it is OK. Purely innocent.
Paras. have it as their march....not OK, must be evil.
I suppose in your mind, anyone who is willing to go into danger, risk losing their life for their country is deranged.
To compare the Paras. who fought Nazism to a mercenary SS Division is arrant nonsense.
The notorious Dr. Josef Mengele, served with the SS Division “Wiking”

I will admit that the connotations with Wagner for the Paras. is dubious,
however, warriors who come from the sky seems apt.

Valkyries was used to accompany several editions of Die Deutsche Wochenschau, the German wartime newsreel. These films were typically narrated by Harry Giese and featured sequences of Luftwaffe bombings.

    http://www.aish.com/jw/s/Wagners-Anti-Semitism.html
There is little doubt that the great German composer Richard Wagner was one of the most virulent anti-Semites in modern history as well as being Adolf Hitler’s most revered cultural role-model. Nor can it be seriously disputed that his music arouses the most painful associations in many Holocaust survivors still living in Israel.

It's pretty damned hard to disassociate the man from his beliefs .
In your original post I read it that you admired the man.

It would have been better if they had used Lili Marlene but the 8th Army commandeered that for their own

As you may have gathered by now, I am British. If you wish me to comment on unit badges of the American Military then I will have to do some research.
From my general knowledge, I know of the 75th Rangers BUT I don't know of the SHUTZSTAFFEL TOTENKOPF UNIT.
I think it very unlikely that they were an US unit whose primary function was the protection of Hitler and the Nazi party. However, perhaps you know differently.
