A blackout late Tuesday hit eleven states of Brazil, six of which are scheduled to host the 2014 World Cup next June. Apparently a peak of demand caused by a heat wave had the grid down, but the government of President Dilma Rousseff attributed the incident to a disturbance in the National Integrated System Operator (ONS). This looks like a system unload to protect the hardware and is more correctly known as an “open switch” problem. The 40 minutes was taken up with the linemen getting to the switching station to close a mechanical switch which the telemetry circuitry was unable to do (basically it’s a standby switch for just these events), imagine a MCB on steroids and you have it.
Just one of the 'wee' problems....I'd like to see a 2-hour blackout on June 12, just as the 1st match is about to start......and then see ole fat-arse trying to justify it, lying through her rotten teeth and claiming she can fix it easily...
