You’re so ignorant. The Falklands are not ruled by the governor, they are ruled by the law. The Falklands remains the oldest and most stable democracy in South America. The Falklands are part of the Commonwealth Realm, which has H.M. Queen as head of State. The Governor of the Falklands represents the Queen in her absence, just as the Governor-General of Canada does. He retains reserve powers (like the Queen) which have never been used.

The Falklands governor also acts as a conduit between the Government of the UK and the Government of the Falkland Islands.

Governor Heyward spent much of his time fishing and handing out the prizes on school sports day.

I do understand your failing to fully understand the constitutional complexities of the worlds oldest and most sophisticated democracy when Argentina has had 6 military cups since as recently as 1930. When the Argentine government was murdering thousands of its own people just 30 years ago.

Also weird you should complain about the appointment of a governor to the Falklands when Argentina thought appointing Lt Alfredo Astiz as Governor of the British territory of South Georgia as great idea.

Democracy at its best....yep 99.8% of the population support the Governor being there.

I can think of nowhere on earth where the system of Government has a higher level of support from the population.

The in coming Governor is a very well experienced individual:-

”The incoming governor was also ambassador in Lithuania (2004/2008); Political Counselor in Tokyo (2001/2004); from 1998 to 2001, head of FCO Common Foreign and Security Policy Department; Paris, First Secretary for Politico-Military Affairs (1997/98); FCO, Head of Justice and Home Affairs Section, European Union Department (Internal) (1995/96); FCO, Head of Gibraltar Section, European Union Department (Internal) (1995); Tokyo, First Secretary for Political Affairs (1993/94); Tokyo, Second Secretary for Economic and Financial Affairs (1990/92”

But alas!!! He has no experience of working in a nursery school.

The experience of teaching whining, snot nosed, little sh*ts all day, having tantrums and screaming when they don't get their own way would have put him in a great position to deal with the government of argentina .

Nice to see such a high powered professional diplomat taking up the position of Governor of the Falklands.

Strangely he is more qualified than the Argentine Ambassador to the Court of St James. (Diplomatic name for the UK)

His Excellency Governor Colin CVO was educated at King’s College Cambridge (MA) and the Courtauld Institute of Art London (MPhil). For those who don’t know the Courtauld Institute is one of the world’s most prestigious and respected centres of art history in the world. Its collection of French impressionist painting is superior to anything found in any Argentine
    Collection.

Before becoming a diplomat Mr Colin Roberts lectured at the Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto Japan (in Japanese). He then qualified as a lawyer, being called to the bar in 1986.

He has held senior diplomatic positions in Paris Tokyo, Lithuania and Dublin as well as senior positions in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London.

Of course the UK has a professional and sophisticated, globally respected diplomatic service which recruits and trains the brightest, most educated and talented of people.

Ambassador Alicia Castro does not meet the necessary requirements.

The Governor of the Falklands acts as an official channel of information between the UK and Falklands Islands Governments. He also acts as nominal Head of State in the absence of Her Majesty the Queen.

The Falklands already possesses the right of self detedrmination. This is guarenteed by both the UN Charter and the Falkland Islands Constitution. This right was given expression in the recent referendum.

Having the right of self determination does not necessary mean total independence. It means the right to decide ones own constitutional arrangement. It means the right to choose.

As we speak, this is to be a self Governing overseas territry of the UK.

A laugh is not much of a refutation. As Oliver Cromwell said, as recently as November 1647 during the Putney debates at St marys church:

“We should have such rulers as those who Govern in accord with the ancient laws, liberties and customs of the land”.

He was of course refering to such things as the Magna Carta of 1215 and the earliest Parliaments of the early 13th century. This is why Britain has no written constitution. We don't need one.

    Argentina on the other hand...........

@11 Argieland has 23 provinces and an autonomous city. Despite all having their own constitutions, they all have “governors”, although the “Governor” of Buenos Aires is called a “Chief of Government”. Why is that?
@17 I understand your laughter. What would any argie know about real democracy? We've seen the videos of the Campora criminal drones, such as yourself, trotting round poor families handing out US$50 (AR550?) for groceries and their vote. In a proper democratic country, like the UK, that's a criminal offence. But nobody was bothered about vote-buying being videoed in argieland. Incidentally, how's that investigation into CFK's finances going? Judges still being told to mind their own business, are they? Can we just imagine a major international organisation suggesting that it could go to argieland, with its own personnel, to conduct a totally fair, free, honest, democratic election? Never be allowed into the country!

“Democracy is a form of government in which all eligible citizens have an equal say in the decisions that affect their lives....”

This is a very narrow definition of democracy (direct democracy). No country in world utilises this system (though the Swiss are close).

The Falkland Islands are, like most other democracies in the world, a representative democracy. All citizens vote to elective representatives who legislate on their behalf. The Falkland Islands, like the United Kingdom, are a constitutional monarch, with some powers held by a sovereign or their representative.

While of course this may seem un-democratic, the Falkland Islanders have recently, and overwhelmingly, democratically expressed their continued support for this system.

To list a few other countries with similar systems: Norway, Australia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, and Japan. In fact these 6 countries are in the top 10 by Human Development Index.

It doesn't surprise me you don't understand democracy, Argentina has only had a democracy for the last 30 years and is currently listed as a flawed democracy (i.e. regarded as less democratic than the UK).

What a lad of guff. I presume you have never heard of the concept of a constitutional Monarchy. The Falklands are governed in the same way as Canada, Australia, Sweden, Spain, Norway and so forth.

The Falklands are ruled by the law, Laws which are passed by the oldest representative democracy in South America. The Governor represents the Queen in her absence, just as the Governor-General of Canada and Australia etc does. Are you seriously claiming Canada is not a democracy? The Governor is a figurehead, just as the Queen is in the UK. Indeed just as the Sovereign is in other Constitutional monarchies.

On an unrelated tangent: I'm curious what the informal hierarchy of prestige is in the British Foreign Office when it comes to being appointed Governor of a BOT. Would the Governorship of the Falklands be considered a plum position? Bermuda? Gibraltar? Mr. Roberts sounds eminently qualified to perform the job. Just wonder if it's one of the more sought after postings in their careers or not.....

“ The Legislative Assembly is empowered to pass legislation for the peace, order and good government of the Falkland Islands, subject to the approval of Her Majesty the Queen...”

When has the Queen ever opposed any law passed by the FI Legislative council?

If you cannot detail any time when she has-your point is completely invalid, i.e. if she has never stopped a law being passed in the Falklands, then she is not interfering with democracy.

“later you bunch womder why 99,9999999% of the world hate you”

Like someone else on here has already told you: It's none of your business. Thanks for your concern though. As a Falkland Islander I am very content that we have the right to choose our own future and we choose to be a British Overseas Territory. The CFK Government has clearly demonstrated what a possible alternative to that could be and we'll take a rain check thanks.
