Saturday, February 15th 2014 - 06:08 UTC
Full article 60 comments

Following the bloody events of last Wednesday, while countries such as Argentina, Cuba, Bolivia, Ecuador, Nicaragua expressed their full support for the Venezuelan government of President Nicolas Maduro, others were more cautious such as Washington and the Europe Union calling for restraint and dialogue, but Chilean president-elect Michelle Bachelet openly twitted her rejection to repression, to President Maduro and called for a plebiscite. Wow that was un expected…!!! Not even the US and the EU have the 00 to say that.

    You go girl !!

Are we going to see a much more assertive Chile and a positive regional leadership to counter the Brazilian and Venezuelan axis under a new Bachellet gov’t?? I do hope so and look forward to more of these statements and Chile championing principles like human rights and freedom of speech against the likes of Dilma, Cristina, Maduro and Evo

Yes, good for Ms Bachelet. In the context of regional politics this is a significant statement and contrasts with CFK's recent comments on the same situation.

Carmona,on the other hand, on the evidence of HIS statement, is a deluded idiot.

    @10 Think

Sadly my intelligence & 'social engagement' chops are not infallible in the face of 'manipulation' from the 'disinformation machine'. I still don't know whether the fact that the twitter account used as the basis for this report ( the one YOU provided ) doesn't now exist, means that the story is neccessarily false.

It seems pretty crude to me, as far as disinformation goes, to produce a story that can so easily be disproved. More like something that might appear in an election for Mayor of Back-of-Beyond rather than an attempt to destabilise Venezuela. You see my point?

Regarding the rest of your post: what are you suggesting? Do you mean “disinformation machine” in the general Orwellian sense or something more specific? A retired Chilean army officer? A cashiered DINA agent? The Dark Side? The C.I.A.?

    2) One of the beauties of the “Disinformation Machine” is that human proclivity of “Thinking” that the fact that a story is “Utterly, Completely & Evidently” false, doesn't mean that the story is “Neccessarily” false.

    3) A retired Chilean army officer? A cashiered DINA agent? The Dark Side? The C.I.A.?, you say......

The government and its oppositions should peacefully work out their differences. Venezuelan's authorities are unable to control and manage properly such cross fire chaos from the economic stand point to the social point.
The government's fundamentally lack of economic understanding in allocating and distributing equitably its resources and profits to its citizens is the core contributor to the present turmoil, otherwise current inflation rate of over 35% would never should happen. In addition currency devaluation and the reduction of the national currency reserves to 25 Billion US would never happens, adding to it continue food and medication scarcities are all indicators of public miss management and Venezuelans cannot benefit from it much worse feel joy, considering that their country is the 5th Oil producer on earth.

Where is the money allocated? Political affiliation is not the answer, but correctly taking care of social issues to its people is the proper answer.

Incorrectly the Government thinks by imprisonment mainly students and journalist and opposition leaders really will stop their claims when indeed it is inflaming higher the existing fire.

He backed down on that one after he was ridiculed about how naive he was.

Just like he backed down from being a SUPA TUPA, when he forgot to consistently portray himself as a man in his mid 70's to mid 80's.

CFK was more astute with the “cacerolazos”..she simply ingored them. The best attitude was Dilmas' one who, after some riots, told the press “Brazil people's has talked and I have listened to then”...I would never asked CFK to have such attitude, I know that she, only, can listen her ideas, thoughts and poket...lately just her poket

The Chilean Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a statement:

“The Chilean Govt. fosters a broad and constructive dialogue among all Venezuelan political forces in a framework of adherence to the laws and freedoms of expression...”

In other words as bland and non-committal as the U.S. State Depts recently issued statement.

Not even a statement from the outgoing ( conservative ) President Pinera, and I can't find anything on this MP story anywhere else. I hereby conclude the story is indeed a fake, which makes me feel pretty dumb for believing it.

I also conclude that no-one is going to intervene ( unless you include Cuba ) in Venezuela until the situation gets much worse.

And the bus driver, who probably got his license in a Wheeties packet, has been invited to Ms Bachelet's inaugeration next month. Assuming he hasn't been assassinated by then.

Cuba has more than 'intervened' it is running the show!
Cuba/Venezuela - The bilateral relation includes development aid, joint business ventures, large financial transactions, exchange of energy resources and information technology, and cooperation in the fields of intelligence service and military. A characteristic of Cuba-Venezuela ties is that both nations are exchanging assets among each other which are inexpensive for the sending country but of high significance for the receiving country.
Cuba is an economic wreck after 54 years of Castro leadership and only survives thanks to oil subsidies from Venezuela. In exchange Cuba controls all the levers of state security and intelligence that help chavismo keep a lid on dissent.
There are currently approx. 50,000 Cuban advisors (!) and other Cuban ‘professionals and workers’ in Venezuela...
Is that enough 'intervention' for you?
The wheels on the bus go round and round.... Ma-Burro does not have a clue.
    The real power lies in
    a) The Boli-bourgeiosie (just google it, I don't have time for these people)
    b) The Castro Clan, who are turning VZ into a WILLING client state.
Ma-Burro is no more than the sock-puppets we see on the Argentine/Malvinista/Falkland threads!

I don't need any convincing of the size and nature of Cuba's presence in Venezuela. Cuba has a long history of intervention in other country's affairs. Angola, Nicaragua, Grenada, Ethiopia...did I miss any? Apart from Angola perhaps, where they stayed for a long time, if memory serves, they have never been so entrenched.

In '83 the U.S. intervened in Grenada. That is not going to happen this time. I wish there a neighbour with both the power and the moral authority to resist Venezuela's Cuban and Chavista fueled descent into dystopia, but there are no white knights on the horizon. If a civil war does eventuate I imagine Columbia might provide some assistance, but for the time being things look very bleak for most Venezuelans. I sympathise.

Yes the opinion in chile is divided over Venezuela situation, but remember Bachelet was put there by the communist and the left coalition.

    You say...:
“Every time you choose a separate identity to express yourself you are disseminating disinformation.”
    I say...:
    That's never then...

    You say...:
“I can't prove it of course - as you well know.”
    I say...:
And I can't prove the contrary of course - as you well know.

    You say...:
“All of your separate identity's display exactly the same free-wheeling, mischieveous, sense of humour”
    I say...:
It is indeed a bonus when, once in a while, one meets another poster with a similar “free-wheeling, mischieveous, sense of humour” as you so nicely put it...
I do also enjoy my exchanges with some of the other “not so mischieveous non Turnips” in here, you included....

Always under the same name though...:
El Think, only El Think and nothing but El Think....

In 2005 I lost a friend whom I'd known for many years. Even though he lived in another city - Sydney - we stayed in touch for all that time, phone calls and E-Mails, and occasionally he would visit wherever I was living on business.

I found out he was dead through the N.S.W. police assisting the coroners office. It turned out that my friend, whom I'd known as Mick, a recovering heroin addict, was in fact a Federal Court Judge. This is the second highest court in Australia behind the High Court. At the time of his death he was the preeminent expert on tax-law in the nation and had advised both the Thailand and Chinese govt on their own laws.

The manner of his death was open to interpretation - although death by misadventure seemed the most likely cause. However, given his importance to the nation, the Coroner wanted to make sure everything was covered so she sent a detective all the way from Sydney to interview me. Five hours in the local cop shop.

All this was shocking and confusing to yours truly and I still don't understand why a person of such stature decided I was going to be his best friend.

Suffice to say I have a particular interest in people who have alternative identities.

    Interesting story...
Now; back to the “alternative identities” issue...

I was once married to a person with an “alternative identity”...
Suffice to say that the shock and confusion the realization of that fact caused on yours truly has efectively viped out any interest in any kind of “alternative identity”.
