Nicolas Maduro really has no clue how democracy works.
Freedom of speech allows people with different views to express themselves. Just like this forum, here.
So the Venezuela, don't like what they are hearing, so lets lock up the oppositions.
Of course if you remember illegal invasion of the Falklands by Argentina they suppressed free speech then too. Deporting people they did not like and taking over the radio station at gunpoint.

Maduro really does not understand democracy - or if he does understand it, he rejects it.
He appears to me to be an unstable demagogue, all too ready to eliminate those who might stand against his form of control.

I have said all along that they will eliminate the opposition entirely, and at one point there will be only one name on the ballots. Just like Cuba. And 100% of the people will vote for the winner!!! And everyone will be so happy...and oil will flow in the streets...

MADuro has far more to worry about if current reports are true than a female engineer (she at least HAS a functioning brain).

Perhaps there will be another “shot heard around the world” that heralds independence from the Cubans only this time it won't be fired into the air.

Maria Afiuni applied the law when she released a prisoner who had been held on remand for three years. The law says a prisoner cannot be held for more than two without facing court. She was promptly arrested for doing so. Tortured and raped whilst in detention.

How many unsolved homicides occur in Venezuela every year? And you/they're worried about whether a Mayor prevents a protest or not? Interesting set of priorities...

The director of the prison in which Judge Afiuni was detained, Isobel Gonzalez, called for an investigation into the Judge's claims. She said she hoped to prove the rape claim was false. She also stated her intention to have Maria Afiuni with criminal defamation.

Chicks dig angry revolutionaries.

His favorite fascists whose president pretends to have won a “50.6%” (0h yes, of course he did) has criminalized any protest from the opposition (a fundamental human right that of course pro-government protesters will ALWAYS have), paralyzed the free press, deployed brownshirts on bikes with guns, and are arresting elected officials who the fascist PSUV party has been LONG trying rid themselves of AND got WAY more votes than Maduro ever did (even with the CNE fraud) -- and of course the cherry on top: holding fast Putinesque “elections” with the CNE fixers on the scene, and of course we know what campaigning for the oppositions will be seen as by the fascists in Caracas and their masters in Havana who are calling the shots.

Just imagine if G.W. ChumpyBushMcHitlerburten “legally” banned protests in San Francisco and Berkley and then arrested the mayors before they ran for governor like our current batch of VZ arrestees were on track for doing, And that's before our yanqui inept but mythical dorktator closed NPR, CNN, MSNBC, barred Mother Jones, the Nation and the Washiontgon Post from buying press supplies, throttling Twitter feeds, expelling Auntie Beeb and Fox “News.” Stevie would be not-so-law-and-ordery then would he?

Of course this opponent to the 'state' is being imprisoned - that's what happens in a dictatorship!
She will eventually be quietly killed, and the streets will be full of people cheering their great leader.

Just be glad that you and I don't live there
    - with my outspokenness I would undoubtedly be in the next cell.

I do live there! Well, about 3 months of the year and a few years ago we had plans to make it almost permanent. Now we are looking at try to get as many of our extended family out as we can.

    Update on Maria (MCM).
Thankfully only briefly detained at CCS airport, BUT to be informed that her parliamentary immunity has been removed.
Then released to rapturous welcome by her supporters.

This is bullying on a grand scale. I give it a week before she is incarcerated on some trumped up charges. Like the two Mayors; without a formal trial.

Maburro running scared and that psychopath Diosdado screaming for heads on platters.
Still no food in the shops..... eventually even the poor will get sick of these Boli-bourguosie gangsters.

Kind of amazing that the only ones complaining about “no food in the stores” are the poor little rich ones.
One would think they would be the ones most affected by the shortages...

    @69 Stevie

Yeah right Stevie. I've seen footage from when Chavez was still around. Queue's round the block. The people complaining about this weren't 'poor little rich ones'. In fact I'd say your own salary would far exceed even well-off Venezuelans for that matter.

“Don't tell my mother...” hosted by Diego Bunuel ( grandson of Luis Bunuel ). Nice guy. Produced by National Geo. The episode was produced a few years ago. And he didn't ask who they voted for. Didn't have to.

Maybe the poor are more accustomed to the grinding poverty?

They will always vote for who-ever gives a free hand-out.

Chavismo has had 15 years to fix this, along with the highest oil-revenues per barrel the country has ever seen.

    So where is the money?

The poor are deliberately kept uneducated lest they turn into 'poor little rich kids'. something the regime could not abide.
    It's the economy, stupid!

Sounds more like the socialists workers party

Rachael Boothroyd is from Liverpool, Her interests include; alternative models of democracy such as the communes and workers control councils

Chris Carlson is from the United States, He has closely followed events in Venezuela since moving there in 2005, and has published work on Znet, Socialist Worker, Aporrea, and Venezuela Analysis among others

Federico Fuentes edits Bolivia Rising, is part of the Venezuela Analysis team and a regular contributor to the Australian based newspaper Green Left Weekly,

Jan Kühn lives in Berlin, He is also part of the editorial team of amerika21.de, an alternative German news website that focuses on the processes of social change and social movements in Latin America.

Tamara Pearson, previously a member of the Australian Socialist Alliance and collaborator with Green Left Weekly, has been living in Merida, Venezuela, since 2007.

Ewan Robertson is from Scotland, United Kingdom. As a student, he was involved for several years in the anti-public spending cuts and anti-war movements

@75 Stevie....so in your opinion VZ is one big democracy, with the government giving out millions of handouts......someone has to pay for it, and it sure ain't the two-thirds of the population that live in slums....which you can clearly see at the top of the page of socialist rag Venezuelanalysis.com.....Just hope that the 350.000 kids know what to do with the 350.000 laptops....willl they thinks they are to be eaten ??
I know for a fact, that Chavez (and now, probably MADuro), used to prohibit the discharge of refrigerated containers with beef, exported from Brazil, making them pile up in Caucedo (Dominican Republic) until a couple of weeks before some public event ( an election, perhaps ?), then would let them in, distribute the beef to the starving people - for free - and then “El Presidente” would be hailed as their 'saviour'..... Real democratic concern for the people..

Thanks for the absolute superb come back to junior expat Stevie!
Anyone who knows about Venezuela knows about that Orwellian mouthpiece. Only Stevie would use it as a source. Proves his lack of knowledge regard Venezuela news/politics/economy etc.
    Equally to Jack B!
He is so naive he thinks that everyone in any country has the same point of view. He has no concept of 'debate' nor of checking one's sources. Obviously the only education he has received is how to press google search plus prejudices!
No concept of critical analysis nor logical thinking.
Sewer rat expat Stevie. What a f*ckin joke. Nothing to contribute here.

A vote, or 230,000 of them, doesn't give anyone a free pass and permits them not to follow the law...
Asking the international community to intervene in your own country is seen by treason in quite a few nations around.

In USA you only have to tell the truth...

OK, then pls explain why Chavez, and now Maduro will not allow the people to express their political opinions ? Don't bother answering.... it's simply because they don't like to see the truth out there , for everyone to see....the first acts of aggression were perpetrated by the Government against the people, who have had enough of an ignorant president who, despite being elected democratically (by a very slim margin) - if you can believe the election wasn't fraudulent - started acting as if he had the 'divine' right to rule...as a dictator...
