I have always been surprised that the US has not shown more interest in Mt Pleasant/Mare Harbour. If the Panama Canal ever became unavailable and they have to go the long way round, then these facilities could suddenly be of very strategic importance indeed.

    @5 Justthefacts

Perhaps even more so, since Russia has been making noises about putting military bases in some South American countries.

If that happens then the Falkland Islands will become very strategic indeed.

A US base in the Falklands? Possible, but of course only with the consent of the Falkland Islanders.

I'd bet that'd make the Argentinians fume. LOL

    Mmm!

Why is it that the UK has to crow about the “special relationship” with the States?

From a logical perspective how can anyone claim that such a thing exists with the Obumma administration? Frankly, if what we have with America is “special” then I don't see it myself.

No UK Citizen can enter the States to live their without having to go out of the country every few months and obtain a new Visitor’s Visa. Is that really how you treat your “best” friend when you allow other countries, many with agendas unfavourable to the US visa less entry?

But the best laugh at the idiocy of it all is Senior Generals of the Pentagon stating in the press that France now fills that spot! GREAT, see how far you get with France in the trouble spots of the world.

There was a joke going around the target shooting clubs until very recently concerning the collectable French rifle Lebel Model 1886. It went:” the French have released another batch of M83 / 86’s used in WW2, only thrown down into the mud once.”

That just about sums up the mass of the French army to a “T”.

@1 Of course he's joking. You didn't believe all that crap about the UK reducing its armed forces, did you? What we did was to send our troops home and put their equipment in storage. Cost-cutting, you see. But the “reserve” troops can still rejoin within 24 hours! The tanks and mobile artillery can still be driven out of their depots. Aircraft carriers are nearly ready. And could be speeded-up. Ever read the figures on where a Typhoon can take off and land? Ever read the figures on British light and medium tanks? Ever contemplated, as the British Army goes into action in eastern Europe, who will notice the nuclear missile that, unfortunately, lands on Buenos Aires? Whoops, someone pressed the “wrong” button!
@8 Do you think that you could stick with one perspective? For a start, yank troops can't fight without chewing gum, comics and ice cream. Then they need someone to shoot at. Anyone will do. Doesn't have to be the “enemy”. French troops are completely different. They require wine, coffee, whores and white flags. Actually, if you go through the history, you'll find that the yanks have NEVER won a war. Either they arrive too late or their “evidence” is based on the movies they produced. France has NEVER won a war against a proper country. A simple example. Battle of Waterloo. French troops - 72,000. British troops - 31,000. Who ran and who won?

    @ LEPRecon, Christ & co.

Sorry guys but someone has to tell you the truth...

The only one believing that you have an especial relationship with USAMEX are you guys.

First rule, USAMEX has not friends or especial relationships just interests...

And if their interests are coincident with yours just fine if not you are dropped like a Taliban after been death by a Russian bomb.

Second rule, you guys and your delirious to keep old jewellery from the Empire days in SA is a complete pain in the @ss for the Amexicans because simple can jeopardise the balance of power in the region.

If a country like Argentina turns suddenly to Russia or China for weapons and military bases or Argentina arms nuclear weapons because of fears of a possible rumour of a Military base under USAMEX influence...

The first to kick your dirty @ss like in the Suez canal fiasco will be the Yanks because the last thing they want is Russia or China orbiting South America or or or or Argies nukes pointing to somewhere.

So little boys with delirious of empire...

I can predict to you that is more possible that Argentina and USAMEX will bomb together the Islands than USAMEX supporting you in any military alliance or adventure near Argentina’s area of influence.

    Sorry

    Danny Danny not again,
The truth is something you may little knowledge of,

their is a very good relationship with the Americans,
BUT, its mostly behind the scenes,
    As [ S.F] would confirm,
but sadly, from my point of view, I don't like the way America presidents treat us, they seem to be very envious of the fact, they strive to emulate us, yet still fail to acquire this status,

we play out part, yet they treat us badly, the French ignored them the decades, and all of a sudden, their best friend, top commands at NATO,

now I may be wrong in my assumptions,
As only the Forces and corrupt politicians know the true extent of out relationship,
    Good or Bad,
    just an opinion.

As a US MARINE, We train on many different levels with the Brits, exchange information, tactics, etc. As one small example - we have a permanent Royal Marine presence at our USMC Officer Candidate School and we have one in theirs. Coincidence? I think not.
While, I may be the first to say that we're not always the best allies, as much as I would like and this administration is a bit wobbly - we know who our allies are and who aren't. And after 15 years of war in the Middle East we know who stand beside us. Personally, I only wish the UK would increase its defense budget - sooner rather than later.

No. 10 - if Argentina turns to China/Russia, then so be it. Your leftist-Bolivian-anti-West doctrine is only helping to ruin your country. Another FACT is that it would be far better for Argentina to try to be friendly with the UK than antagonise....
still, if they want slide into being a failed state like VeneCuba, well, we have more important things to be getting on with.

    @Briton

Briton, Briton... are you really British???

When I was living in Ukistan your politicians and your propagandistic media were all the time comparing Britain with USAMEX and talking about the especial relationship that only exist in their minds

I have ever saw politician and media more jealous about another nation as if USAMEX have been taken all your richness and power from you.

Your politicians are all the time and by all means trying to get out of the crowd portraying Britain as something of extreme necessity for USAMEX and behaving like if they were sitting in the same table of power with them.

Can you see the same rhetoric in this article from the speech of Philip Hammond in Washington?...

Its is not USA that is telling... Oh! how we need Ukistan on our side...

On the contrary is Ukistan trying to convince USA that they need Britain desperately...

But as you can see Britain is no relevant for USAMEX...

If I would have to compare Britain with a fish I guess that would be to a Remora (Echeneis naucrates).

Is a little fish that always like to peg to big fish like sharks and they have no value and are not interesting or relevant for anyone. Is so irrelevant that not even the shark try to eat them.
And of course none want to fish them..

The remora when is little lives close to de anal conduct of the shark and keeps the area clean of parasites and waste...

I guess that you are having now a picture of what is the Britain’s role in the world ecosystem...

Yes you are right... Britain is providing to the shark USAMEX the same service like the little remora...

    @ Wolverine

You are talking about ruined countries when USAMEX has an external debt of 17 trillions and OBOSO has to beg for money to the Chinese.

Most of the murders in Venezuela, results of the riots, are to be blamed the opposition.
The officialists responsible for any crimes have been processed and jailed, as you could read on MP yourself.

What happens in the UK when you put a city afire? If you start burning forests, what would the police do? If these crimes are organized, and financed by external interests, what would your officials do?

What, ALL of them? I actually read they were jailed and being investigated, as one would hope.
The loophole of course, is that the “ un-officialists” are doing the murdering and terrorising of the public for the government, at arm's length.
As was reported last month, Maduro issued AK-47's to “Collectivos”, thugs on motorcycles that swarm to priest sites and open fire on unarmed people. Maduro denies culpability.

For a self- described “Anarchist”, it's incomprehensible that you would so ardently support a Totalitarian Government like Maduro's, a government contrary to “free-will” of the People, don't you think?

    Please confirm for us,
The “poor little rich kids” that Stevie talks about do not protest, as it is the dispossessed that are taking to the streets, not the “rich ” kids, correct.

Isn't this just Stevie trying to blame it on the Middle Class, the “Oligarchs”, the educated Opposition?

The hundreds of thousands seen protesting come from all walks of life and all ages.
Many of them are students but that doesn't mean they are rich as university education is free at the point of delivery. The Middle Class is only about 25% of the population and the rich, maybe the top 5%. So,no his 'argument' doesn't hold water.
he throws out this stuff out of his own middle class European guilt whilst playing on a computer his parents brought him in front of his studenty poster of Che....I would guess. ..
    How ever..
some people in the poor barrios get a bus across town to join the lower middle class protesters as they are too afraid of the colectivos in their own neighbourhood.
The fact that hundreds of thousands regularly protest puts paid to this 'poor little rich kids' lie. There is also a difference between the hardcore politicised students who man the barricades day and night, and the vast numbers which attend the daytime rallies.
They are just people who sick and tired of being sick and tired for the reasons so well known
    food scarcity
    rampant inflation
    massive insecurity
highest murder rate in Lat Am

    Thanks, ilsen.

I agree with your assessment of “Stevie”.
He portrays himself as an Idealist, but a woefully naive, self- righteous, and ignorant one.

Stevie has in the past, put himself on a pedestal of righteousness, posing as a Tupamaro, and very specific about where he operated and which faction he was associated with. He even went so far as to put himself living through Tupa campaigns of the 1970's - a noble freedom fighter, hero of the Class Struggle, a contemporary of Mujica's.
That would have made him about 75-85 years old today.

He recounted with glee, threatening a captive “US Operative” with torture until he peed himself with fear. “Tupa” Stevie found this extremely amusing and told us so, more than once.
I asked if he was communist, but Stevie dismissed some of his “fellow Tupas” as Communists, but said he himself was an “Anarchist” and insisted he meant that in the most idealistic and theoretically pure way.

Now we have “Anarchist” Stevie supporting a rigid Totalitarian government in Venezuela that violently oppresses it's own Working Poor and their free- will.
Quite contrary to the “Anarchist” who believes in a utopian society of non-governing, free-will and voluntary cooperation.

    But that's Stevie!

BTW, he later got caught out, calling “ Captain Poppy”
an “Old man”, and deriding for his age (50) and resultant perspective of world history.
Stevie then denied ever having said he was a TUPA !!

At various times, he has said he lives in Uruguay full- time, sometimes, travels there often, or the Neo- Liberals with USA backing, banished his family from South America during Operation Condor - never to return.
There are several variations on that story. He's a fraud!

Very much appreciate your background to events in Venezuela.
You have given us an amazing insight as to how the actual People, both Proletariate and Middle -Class average citizens feel, and what is important to them.

Please continue, and keep Maduro's feet to the fire!!

    Interesting.
It sounds though that the people are no longer resigned to their fate.
Can they keep up the protests ?

Where are the VZ military in all this?
They seem to be sitting this one out.

What role are the 50,000 Cuban 'Advisors' really playing?

Can your family in VZ communicate with you easily, on a regular basis?

    Troy
    Thanks for the interest.
I'll do my best to answer!
    1) no idea
    2) yes, for now
    3) Nobody really knows. Mostly behind the scenes. Yes there are a lot of medical staff but the hospitals have no medicines. Most are 'government' or military 'advisors'. Some are embedded in the National Guard. Not to be confused with the actual Army. The National Guard are closely linked with both the Secret Police AND the colectivos. Often working in tandem. It is a common tactic of the daylight protesters, (ordinary, non-radical, people), to either engage the GN in conversation, or demand they sing the National Anthem! This is a great psychological and peaceful instrument. It either reminds the GN of the fact they are one people, or exposes and embarrasses the Cubans. The chant of 'Cubans go home!' is popular and frequently heard on the marches. .
    4) yes. Through the internet, using email, Facebook, WhatsApp, sometimes Skype. Depends on the availability of an Internet connection. Payphones and the phone shops (the ones with little booths), no longer connect to Europe. Some of my business contacts have very expensive landlines which we have access to. International mobile and texts are prohibitively expensive and rarely work.
It is certainly not a 'normal' situation.
The frequent power cuts knock out most of the phone and internet because most people do not have 'cable' access, so when the signal towers go down, nearly all connection is lost. (Which the regime used to its advantage in Tachira State recently). Some more wealthy people are linked to satellite connection but this is rare.
We always find a way though!!!!
    ;-)
The above info is mainly in reference to Merida State and therefore Merida City also.
Important NB: during the past 15 years of Chavismo the State and local police have been deliberately sidelined and underpaid. Thus centralising the command structure and power of the GN as each State becomes more reliant on the GN (word count limited)

Ahem (clears throat), I wasn't expecting to be called upon, but I shall endeavour to deliver. ..
NB cont. .. the local police are disempowered and increasingly disillusioned. Underpaid and powerless, corruption grows exponentially. ( I always factor in an 'allowance' into my budget for the 'you have something for my lunch' daily questions. ..).
These are the people the local Mayor has to rely on to dismantle the barricades under central government decree. The people whose sons and daughters set up the barricades. The local Mayors do not control the GN. Remember that the GN are centrally controlled. Therefore when they 'fail' to control the barricades they are arrested and thrown in jail. This has so far only happened to Opposition Mayors.
The Policisa Touristica barely exist anymore as there are no foreign tourists. A vital form of foreign currency, local income and of course the cultural interchange so valued by Venezuelans.
A lot to keep track of I realise. Thanks for bearing with me. Most of it is straight out of the Cuban command and control play book. It makes me so sad to see it written out in black and white.
Especially as Venezuela has some of the largest oil resources on Earth.
33 million arable hectares, (but only 3 million in production)

    The Gran Sabana

and of course, some of the most beautiful women in the world.

Yes I was (asking to continue). Once I get on a subject close to my heart, I do like to follow through.
So, no problem. Glad to be of service (my dry humour doesn't always translate via text awfully well. As I have found to my cost previously lol!)

    back on topic.
I do not believe the USA has any interest in direct military interference. The US public has no interest and the US government already has good oil deals and decreasing dependency on foreign fuel supply.
Internally, I feel the military (not the half-arsed Cuban infiltrated GN) will continue to sit this out for a while. Fingers burnt etc. Also many high echelon military have gotten seriously rich and/or transferred into government.
Many have massive bank accounts the USA. Which may provide leverage for the USA gov if they chose...
so no military coup likely. These guys are much more educated than in the past and wouldn't want the exposure on their alleged narco-trafficking business.
Quite happy to play along with the regime as long as they get rich.
As you can see. Very much a vipers nest.

They didn't listen to the U.S. and went and took care of Argentina pretty effectively. It's a tragedy so many lives were lost because Argentines wanted to steal something that wasn't theirs.

@52 As I recall, the UK went into action against argieland in 1982 without any direct foreign support. How many SA territories aided argieland? And France? And Israel? And Russia? @67 “foreign caucasians plus hordes of mercenaries plus the help of the u.s.” Analysis: “foreign caucasians” - British troops. Did you imagine anyone was going to recruit latam cowards?

Not a “horde” and not “mercenaries” either. Oh, how faggot argies love to lie. And the U.S. assistance? You mean ammunition? And argieland got “assistance” from France, Israel, Brazil, Peru, and others didn't it?

I guess he meant to say Argentina's neighbors detest it, when somehow we should be allies. Mexico detests the United States, yet Wolverine would probably respond something to the effect that he doesn't care what the Mexicans think. So why should Argentina care about what Uruguay or Chile think?

It is this sort of hypocrisy that makes me dislike Anglos. Because let me be clear, while I am engaging in a unilateral cease-fire from making inflammatory comments on your countries, I genuinely do not like Anglos, or Europeans in general. The only reason being is their hypocrisy. Take that out of the way and I would really not care much either way.

I actually know a lot of Mexicans and travel often to Mexico, they seem to be rather happy with the US. Maybe its just the circles you run in.

Countries can be respected, feared or ridiculed. I know plenty of Irish, Indians and Spaniards who live in the UK and seem rather happy. They don't display the hate that is shown on this site. Their children are sent to British schools, some of the best in the world, they learn English and assimilate. The British also hold the Olympics, Football World Cup, Rugby World Cup, and are respected around the world. British fashion, manufacturing banking, music and cultural achievements are shared and celebrated around the world. Its a member of the most important international organizations in the world.

Let's now contrast this with Argentina. WITHIN LIVING MEMORY : Its assets are seized internationally. It defaults on its debts, repeatedly. Its considered the basket case of Latin America and its bonds trade at a higher rate than Venezuela. Within living memory it has murdered thousands of its own people. Its ships sink in berth. It has a history of repudiating its international obligations. It cozies up with similar pariah states such as Cuba and Venezuela. Its tramples on property rights, freedom of the press, and fails its citizens.

I care because my roots are Anglo-Argentine and I see the sh*thole Argentina has become. You don't like “Anglos”, what a stupid thing to say.

BTW - it would have been much better for Argentina to declare for the Allies during WWII. It narrowly avoided being bombed by the BRAZILIANS and the Allies and many Latin American countries ceased diplomatic ties during this time. This lack of good will and undefined foreign policy set the for Argentina's foreign relations for 30 years after.

    @87

You have a consummate Anglo-centric point of view and I am not going to attempt to have an exchange of ideas, because I already know it will be fruitless since you'll not be receptive to other views.

You have been raised in the world-view that Anglos are the good-guys and everyone else the bad guys. Unfortunately, the world isn't soy white-black. Fortunately for me, I understand that.

Now think: why would respect for Argentina worldwide hang upon a ship foundering or floating, or whether it organized a Rugby world cup? Do you realize how superficial and trivial that appears.

The rest is utter hyperbole. I could also aver Argentine fashion, music, advertisement, and cultural achievements are world respected and present cogent evidence for it. But in the end, those are just opinions based on one's own tastes. So what if Argentina is not part of G7? Does that make Belgium not worthy of respect. I always found the Anglo need for forums of status strange.

Argentina is a medium-sized country and it will always be. To compare it to countries in Europe that are still riding the coat-tails of Empire, or to countries with 10 to 20 times its own population is an emotional and intellectually awry string that most Argentines and non-Argentines have a proclivity to wish to pull.

As for WWII, why would it had been much better? Brazil didn't bomb Argentina. The USA did not attack. The fact that many L.A nations ceased diplomatic ties only shows the bullying hand of the USA, which proves they were not exactly “freedom fighters”, when denying freedom of choice in the first place!

And one more thing. If you think Argentina is a shithole, that is your opinion and as sad as it may be, it only speaks for you. But since you already served in the armed-forces of another country, it should be none of your concern now.

As for yankeeboy, he should be taking advantage of my cease-fire to at least sound somewhat smart enough to engage in debate. But alas, FAIL. Again.

There you had @92 a great chance to engage in debate, which you have always claimed to be ready but for my trolling and lack of arguing skills supposedly precluded you from doing so.

You have really become just a slightly less obnoxious version of Yankeeboy.

I told you tell me when you are going to come to Argentina for me as you have said and I will pick you up in the airport courtesy of Dany Berger.

Is not so difficult to understand are you scared?

Don’t worry it is just that I don’t want that you get lost and have to spend money in taxis to CABA.

Imagine that after your long trip you just get lost. That would be very disappointed for me.

After all, the “US Marine” that is threatening people to reach them is you.

I feel so scared now you know...

Just for the record what have you planned to do we me?

Come on say it don’t be ashamed...

I love to be so scared specially by US marines...

Yes I am interested but not overly so. This exercise takes place twice yearly in Spring and Autumn. The only spot where the vessels can be seen and photographed easily is round about the Cloch. From Largs they are a bit too far out and from where I live they are always about 12 miles off the Ayrshire coast. With the recent weather, there has been too much sea mist to see anything clearly.
The fun place to be is at Faraid Head near Durness, which is opposite
Cape Wrath and Garvie Island, where live firing exercises are carried out..
Even at 4 miles you can feel the detonation of a 1000lb bomb through the ground. The effect is scary.

The BBC usually do a report on the exercise nearing its completion.

GENTLEMEN: To those of you out there who believe in representative government, property rights, the rights of the individual to be free from the coercive power of the state, I salute you. It this was we live for, fight for and will pass on to our children. Please understand that there do remain wonderful, serious, intelligent people in Argentina but they are not represented on this page.

To the CHILDREN in the room: DannyBerger, Trolling Cease Fire, et a. You may reject my ideas as 'anglo-centric', but you do so at your own peril. Proud nations as Chile and Columbia have prospered under these basic principles and others have floundered to the misery of their people.

@TrollingCeaseFire - I read your post and agree that there will not be an exchange of idea - not only because your presume my views but because you are not able to understand that there are different views, opinions and that your position on the Falklands is not inalienable, as you so like to teach in school. As a nation Argentina would do much better if it were to listen a bit more and shout a bit less. Does WWII matter? No more so than 1831, 1833, 1861 or 1982 I guess. To the extent that you embrace the current statist and populist politics of your government, I wish you luck, because you're going to need it.

@DanyBerger: You are a nobody from nowhere. I don't even think you exist. You're just a government hack being paid 50 centavos an hour to troll. Good luck with that - I am confident that you'll experience some violent act of street crime long before I ever figure out who you are. I, however, would never dirty my hands on your filth.

I started to post with the simple intent of showing how US/UK relations are very good. I guess Argentina feels its better off with Venezuela, Iran and Russia as its friends. Its sad, but there you go, the history of Argentina is a greek tragedy.

    @Wolverine the US marine

And all these shit what does mean?

You are not going to come for me now?

Allow me to remember your post...

“As a US MARINE, We train on many different levels with the Brits, exchange information, tactics, etc. As one small example - we have a permanent Royal Marine presence at our USMC Officer Candidate School and we have one in theirs. Coincidence? I think not.”

“@DannyBerger, you are clearly the STUPIDEST person posting on this site. Where do you live, I'd like to pay you a visit. Do you live in Argentina? The Brits bent over backwards not to kill more of you in the War, consider yourself fortunate that professionals were involved. You scum sent over professional soldiers who were more adept at killing your own people and raping nuns than in fighting a war. Well done.”

“@DanyBerger- tell me where en capital Danny. I have a long reach. Long enough to reach out and touch you pelotudo.”

“Anyway - what rat infested sh&thole do you live in? Quilmes, Almargo, somewhere in provincia? Give me a hint.”

“I, however, would never dirty my hands on your filth.”

How disappointed I’m now I cannot find any good contender who wants to kill me anymore like use to be before even among the US marines.

    @Briton

yeah! You are right I failed to find a US marine that want to kill me.

Do you want to kill me Briton?

    @ 101 Dany Berger

I think that by any reasonable view you MAY be already dead. You may walk around and “talk” but other than that, that’s it.

Let us consider the attributes of “live” people in an advanced society:
    1) have an ability to hold a reasoned discussion;
    2) have an IQ of greater than 100. The IQ scale starts at 70 which is generally accepted as a true imbecile who is unable to look after himself. An average IQ is 100, British science students at University have an IQ around 130;
    3) be able to promote his point to a level accepted by all reasonable people even if they disagree with it.

    With a score of:
    1) not able
    2) apparent IQ of 80 / 90;
    3) do you ever have a point?

It would seem you are already dead then.

    HA, HA, HA.

Yep we know that.....The thing is we dont have the Saudi Prince threatening us with terrorism if we dont do as we are told.
You have to ook at the pros and cons

“Saudi Arabia's rulers threatened to make it easier for terrorists to attack London unless corruption investigations into their arms deals were halted, according to court documents revealed yesterday.”

    http://www.theguardian.com/world/2008/feb/15/bae.armstrade

I guess the point is the military power and world projection is completaly useless when you cant transform it into real and subtantial soft and political power. The Saudi Prince threatens their own Prime ministers with terrorism and tells them what to do. They aid Pakistan out of the fear the Pakistanis hand over the bomb to Al qaeda or the Taliban, the Brits have being braught into all of this for being the lapdogs of the US and got absolutely nothing from it and all this when they actually dont need to be a world power and can save so much trouble by having a independent and realistic policy like France has.

Actually I think I have just effectively summed up the truth.... What has Argentina's foreign policy have anything to do with this??

And truth does seem to hurt, doesn’t it??... Despite all this macho and chest beating here in Mercopress against Argentina a trully fallen regional power that is becoming a reapid failed state, in the real world outside arena the UK is a lapdog and a chronical looser. It’s not America's fault actually Americans care for their own and follow their own interests as any nation should.

And no, definitely Argentina is being a real boss of Brazil and Uruguay. Some years ago I thought Brazil was just being patient with the Kirchners. But Like it or not, the Argentine gov't (whom I’m devoutly against) gets to block Brazlian imports whenever it wants to and holds a current record trade surplus, it halts talks of a FTA with the EU much to Brazils detriment, it gets Brazilian lip service in everything they want, so yep...You are completely wrong on that one. The consecuences of the Cisplatine war are still there.

    Just ignore CD.

He truly doesn't understand about power and influence. He believes that if you have power you should use and abuse it.

He cannot understand why someone who has power won't use it against weaker people, so in his mind that makes them weak too.

This is the flaw of Argentine thinking. It is the same flaw that had them believing in 1982, right up until the Vulcan bombers hit the runway at Stanley, that the British were bluffing, because they had tried diplomacy before force.

Best to leave him to his delusions.
