Argentines strongly disapprove of torture, but 49% are fearful if in custody

Nearly half of all Argentines say they fear suffering torture if they were detained by authorities, a figure that represents slightly more than the global average, an Amnesty International survey has revealed. The results from a series of questions on the issue show Argentina as one of the nations that most disapprove of torture among the 21 countries surveyed. Read full article

In that I agree with you, Briton.
    Some things never change.
Like your media trying to play with numbers and totally failing.

    Look at the proposition.

“If I were taken into custody by the authorities in my country, I am confident that I would be safe from torture.”

    Now, according to MP stats:

Argentines who AGREE with the proposition: 34%
Australians who AGREE with the proposition: 16%
Brits who AGREE with the proposition: 15%

It's obvious some people should clean their own houses first.

That, or attend some courses in statistics...

OMG did Stevie really just do that?

Some FAILS are so funny they even make me blush.

“If I were taken into custody by the authorities in my country, I am confident that I would be safe from torture.

    Now, according to MP stats:

Argentines who AGREE with the proposition: 34%
Australians who AGREE with the proposition: 16%
Brits who AGREE with the proposition: 15%“

Actually Stevie. It is you that should ”attend some courses“ on comprehension.

You got your propositions mixed up. Which considering your recent acrobatics in ignoring reality, is hardly surprising.

'Argentines came in slightly higher than the average from the 21 countries included in the survey, with 44% of the 21,221 people queried revealing they would fear torture if in custody.

Neighboring Brazil, topped the list with 80%, compared to the lower results from Australia and the UK, where 16% and 15% of people, respectively, said they “agree” with the proposition.'

So what that actually means is: WOULD YOU FEAR TORTURE IF IN CUSTODY?
Brazil: 80% would fear torture if in custody.
Argentina: 44% would fear torture if in custody.
Australia: 16% would fear torture if in custody.
UK: 15% would fear torture if in custody.

Thanks for highlighting how safe Australia and the UK are compared to your South American hermanos. No wonder our countries are magnets for immigrants like you.

”It's obvious some people should clean their own houses first.” BTW that's directed at you, in case you didn't realise with your limited comprehension skills.

    But Anglolatino, can't you read?

    Let's do this slowly...

    All according to the note:

    First propesition,
“If I were taken into custody by the authorities in my country, I am confident that I would be safe from torture.”

    Second preposition,
“clear rules against torture are needed because any use of torture is immoral and will weaken international human rights.”

    Third, and LAST, preposition,
“torture is sometimes necessary and acceptable to gain information that may protect the public.”

No need to thank me, boy.
    Anytime.

    Stevie

What has gotten into you today? Or more recently?

Seems I can not only read, but I can also interpret statistics and reports. You however don’t believe anything that doesn’t suit your already made up mind.

    You claimed:

“Argentines who AGREE with the proposition: 34%
Australians who AGREE with the proposition: 16%
Brits who AGREE with the proposition: 15%”

    That proposition being:
“If I were taken into custody by the authorities in my country, I am confident that I would be safe from torture.”

    But you are WRONG.

Here is the breakdown and let’s see if you can see where you went wrong?

    Brazil:
    80% strong or somewhat disagree
    2% unable to answer
    18% strong or somewhat agree

    Argentina:
    49% strong or somewhat disagree
    17% unable to answer
    34% strong or somewhat agree

    Australia:
    16% strong or somewhat disagree
    1% unable to answer
    83% strong or somewhat agree

    UK:
    15% strong or somewhat disagree
    2% unable to answer
    83% strong or somewhat agree

You turned the questions around. You weren’t comparing like with like. And you keep thinking that Mercopress stuffed up. But I read it for what it was.

I draw your eye to paragraph 3. Line 4. Word 5.

    FEAR.

That’s the proposition that they were referring to and I clearly understood it. Perhaps it is because English isn’t your first language. You probably didn't even notice they used “preposition” in the second paragraph.

No matter which way you try to split it, We feel safer in the UK and Australia. We worry a lot less about our governments torturing us. Pity the countries you idolise such as Russia, Argentina and Brazil don’t engender the same confidence.

You shouldn't have commented, because now all you have done is allow myself to highlight how badly the continual leftists governments in Brazil and Argentina scare the living sh!t out of their citizens.

But not here in good ol' safe Oz.

Thanks again Stevie. You do half my job.

Among the big Western countries, Britain had the second largest share of support for torture: 29%. The biggest share was found, of course, in its boss and hateful spawn, the United States of Abu Ghraib and Guantánamo (45%).

The US had a worse percentage than did many countries deemed illiberal police states (Mexico and Turkey, for example) whereas Britain ranked worse than did Russia (25%), a country stereotyped as a nation of troglodytes and bigots in the Western press, and worse still than did the “South American hermanos”, Brazil, Chile and Argentina (all had 18 or 19% share of support). Excluding the negative influence of Peru on the continental average, South America is the world's most liberal continent on the subject of torture and the rights of men to be protected from it.

As for Brits: that, as Anglotino so helpfully reminds us, they have such a large share of support for torture despite not fearing it themselves, only highlights the cowardliness of this support -- they understand that torture, if ever applied in their country, would not have as target a Brit such as them, at least not someone from a mainstream Brit community -- it would be applied on someone of a vulnerable community: immigrants, people from disliked communities (*cough* Muslims *cough*) and so forth.

It's like the murderous abuse poured on hapless Iraqi prisoners -- civilians or independence fighters all -- was not enough, and Brits want to import the practice into their country and further torment those who bear any resemblance to their Iraqi victims.

Is this really a country we want to keep around our righteous, peaceful continent?

    Anglolatino
Paint it blue for all I care, what you claim is not what it says.
    Let me cut and paste:

“Neighboring Brazil, topped the list with 80%, compared to the lower results from Australia and the UK, where 16% and 15% of people, respectively, said they “agree” with the proposition.”

    AGREE.

    you see, Anglolatino?

    AGREE.

Now look at the preposition that is being agreed with. The first one.

    Again, I'll copy and paste:

“If I were taken into custody by the authorities in my country, I am confident that I would be safe from torture.”

    Try again :)

Police in Argentina are scary. Everyone knows they are corrupt and are heavily involved in the crimes.
As an American I wouldn't be too afraid because there would be repercussions from the USA if something happened and I can always buy my way out. So can the upper middle and rich Rgs.

    “No I don't hold a grudge”
Oh yes you do. I vividly remember it - your tearful anger, that sudden outburst that caught me by surprise, the angry denunciation of something I didn't remember happened but you said it did some years ago. I did try to make things nice -- not something I'm known for -- but you were unconsolable. I sincerely hope you've gotten past whatever I told you on that day 3 or 4 years ago, but sometimes you make it hard to believe. :-(

“I just laugh at your antics most of the time”
I know you don't and that it eats you away whenever I point out the stains - and God, how many are they! - in your violent, rotting country's history, deep and recent. You've promised yourself to ignore me but it's not always that you can do that, as your last post shows. You were doing so well - why the lapse now?

    “especially with Bitcoins”
No idea what you're saying here. Along with a bit of composure, I do hope you can show some coherence as well next time.

“I bet you don't have any after all the exchange crashes, eh?

Hardly surprising with your comprehension skills.

But glad you are safe in the west. No torture for your daughter. She's pretty much Danish now anyway. Or whatever comfortable country you live in.

    The proposition.

I agree it says preposition inthe text as well and that the text is poorly edited.

But you are the one using it to base your arguments, I'm merely quoting.

According to MP, Aussies and Brits are quite scared of being taken into custody. Seems only some 15-16% agree to a proposition that states, and I quote:

“If I were taken into custody by the authorities in my country, I am confident that I would be safe from torture.”

Nor would somebody who actually lived in Uruguay, or even just visited occasionally, be unaware of the exact nuances of meaning and use of certain words as used in this country. Nor would he be unable to obtain simple and readily available info about a shop on the main junction of the location in Uruguay where he quite recently claimed to live. Nor would he misspell the name of that place.

    Stevie

It is unlike you to keep a low profile on Mercopress. It's alright that you have been caught out with multiple names on here as you'll keep the name Stevie.

Anyway lots of discussions now taking place. I dare you to participate.

Nah, let him wear himself out, Anglolatino.

    I'll watch him.

Is that ok for your blood pressure?

    ;)

    Stevie

Blood pressure? Huh? I'm not old like you.

Wear who out? Yourself? You were clearly using more than one login.

Your actions remind me of Think when he was caught. You guys always act the same.

That's fine. Hide here. I'm controlling the discussions on the other threads. Your absence only reinforces the points I am making.

How does one clearly use more than one login?

Let the other Stevie wear himeself out, It's so not fun when clapping alone...

    Stevie

No one can use someone else login.

Only the person that registered it can.

    You can't prove otherwise.

Keep going. I'm having so much fun.

You are surely entertaining the rest of us...

Keep your truths, Anglolatino, something tells me educating you on this one will reduce the entertainment.

Oh I'll happily apologise to you clearly and profusely.

If you could prove someone actually used your name.

However so far no one has proved that. Least of all YOU!

    Why would I care, Anglolatino?

Give the guy his 15 minutes of fame...

  • Anglotino

Of course you would care. To do otherwise would be out of character.

The fact you are acting like this means you don't care only because no one is using your name.

I'm debating just about anyhing with a bunch of right-wing neoliberal lunatics on an internet thread in a language that is not mine.

Isn't that enough out of character for you?

Why are you so desperate for me to catch the bait, by the way?

    Anti-climax?

Does that mean we are free to insult Mendacious and Keith Pork since they do not exist?
    A bit like The Malvinas.

    69, 70,

“Forgetit87” is busy on here again.

Is it me, or does it seem there is some mendacity and yorkishness about him .

A certain patronising turn of phrase,“ ...and you were doing so well up to then” is common between “forg 87” and “Mendo-sock ”

not conclusive, but keep an eye out, and BS-o-meter running.

    :-D

    @71

    Ha ha! Very pertinent!

There's also another one snuffling around making 'goady' comments.

    Keep your eyes peeled. ...
