Grant Shapps, British Conservative MP and party chairman urged Gibraltarians to vote Tory in the EU election and reminded the Rock that Labor ‘tried to sell you down the river into the Mediterranean’. Shapps was speaking shortly after arriving in Gibraltar and paying a courtesy visit on acting Chief Minister Dr John Cortes.
He had already met Chief Minister Fabian Picardo and Deputy Chief Minister Dr Joseph Garcia in London prior to flying to the Rock. Picardo and Dr Garcia briefed him on a range of current issues including border delays, incursions into Gibraltar waters and aviation matters.
This is not MP Shapps’ first visit but it was the first time here to campaign for the European election and in particular for Conservative election candidate James Cracknell.
MP Shapps said the Conservative message is: “Look, if you want Gibraltar to continue to be part of the UK, if you want to know who is really batting for you, it’s the Conservatives, so please vote Conservative on the 22nd.”
On other parties competing for votes in the election he said: “Labor did not support you at all, they tried to sell you down the river into the Mediterranean” and ”Liberal Democrats back home want more Europe wherever they can get it”.
“UKIP wants to take the UK out of Europe and that would have massive implications for Gibraltar having to negotiate from scratch some sort of agreement to be able to trade. I think it would be a disaster for somewhere like Gibraltar.”
By voting Conservative MP Shapps said that they will renegotiate various agreements within Europe. Urging people to vote Conservative he said: “If you live in Gibraltar and you care about Gibraltar being part of the United Kingdom then the only way you can do all that is to vote Conservative.”

May 16th, 2014 - 07:59 pm 0then again have not the conns tried to sell us to the highest bidder,
scrapping our defences do not help one bit,
Cameron is not so innocent in all this,
he sits whilst the European fools laugh at us,
besides, labour aint in power, You are,
so its your responsibility to deal with Spain and Argentina.
Back to the Labor/Labour arguement of a previous thread (sorry). I do wish Mercopress would spell it as the Party they refer to spells it. That is just good journalism and nothing to do with British/US spelling differences.
May 16th, 2014 - 10:42 pm 0Also, I do wonder which way our notorious refugee in Scotland is going to vote?
What's your take on this Voicey?

May 17th, 2014 - 12:04 am 0I think the words were.... the only way to guarantee the UK will get a referendum on the EU is if they vote Conservative.....
Also this guy is talking shite this is the European elections and UKIP cannot take the UK out of Europe even if they win a majority in the European Elections....
