    From TASS:
“Commenting on the Argentina-UK dispute, Lavrov said, “It is necessary to resume talks on this issue as soon as possible in order to resolve the dispute by peaceful means.”

This is NOT support for Argentina's position, merely repeating the usual neutral UN reference to talks. I'm pretty sure Russia's diplomats in London will have reported that Hague invited Timerman to talks in London when he was there but that Timerman ran away. Since Lavrov previously compared Russia's position on Crimea to the UK's position on the Falklands, he can hardly be strongly supporting the Ukrainian / Argentine positions.

Keep up the good work Mr T - your last visit was such a success (for the islanders) that you are welcome back to the UK anytime!

    You wish, Think.
But your wishes are doomed to failure.
Why should we sit at a ”negotiating table?
    1) There is nothing to negotiate.
    2) What is Argentina offering?
As per # 2 above, l suspect, nothing, as they have nothing that we want.
So Argentina would come to the negotiating table, offering nothing but expecting everything!
Get real Argentina, wake up, its coffee time.

During the Falkland's War the U.S.S.R. was very eager to assist the Junta. Argentina obligingly furnished the locations of all of it's naval vessels. Norwegian intelligence intercepted the transmissions and, equally obligingly, passed the information to the British.

    Conclusion: Russian assistance is over-rated.

Haha, Argentina joining the Brics, that is hysterical. Russia's attitude isn't exactly unexpected after Prince Charles compared Putin to Hitler and the ongoing sanctions. The truth is that China, Russia, Brazil and India are cut from a very similar mould, they all have very dubious human rights records, in that respect Argentina would naturally be drawn to countries of that ilk.

This all plays out well for the Falklands though as the closer Argentina aligns itself with countries like Russia and Iran, the less likely they will continue to attract support for their bogus claim from respectable countries.

The only way the Falklands are ever going move from their present status is a successful Argentine invasion, again hysterical, or independence. The problem for Argentina is that the world always has more serious matters to address and that won't ever change.

    Poor Argentina, always the loser.

Again as with Brazil and others, Russia will polity nod and mouth some pleasantries about resolving/talking to achieve some amicable resolution to all sides: basically no change from the last 50+ years.

Russia & China are permanent members of the security council, when are we going to see some real action from these so called RG buddies? Answer: never. Iran may re-name Bobby Sands Street to 'Malvinas Avenue' outside the UK embassy in Tehran, but that's as good is it will ever get.

“Yet another nail in the English diplomatic coffin in the South Atlantic....”

What a pathetic, infantile and shallow understanding of pretty much everything.

The BRICS is a totally ineffective organisation and adding Argentina would change nothing.

As for Russia's “support”. What has Argentina gained? As usual, nothing. After 79 years..... sweet F all.

    Yeah, yeah, blah.

Russia is getting desperate for friends and didn't support Argentina's 'position', just the usual call for peaceful outcomes for all.

Also it is so very easy for Argentina to sign treaties regarding the non-weaponisation of Space. As if it has any say the matter anyway!
No one cares what Timmerman thinks, or signs.

If tensions with the UK increase over Ukraine, sending some ships for “training” with, err hum, the Argentine navy in the South Atlantic will be used to stir the s**t over the islands and could try to be used as leverage.

Well we won't have to worry about Argentine nuclear weapons in outer space then.....that is a mighty relief.

The Russian line is the same as the large majority of fence sitters on the Falklands issue. It neither implies support for the Argentine position nor the UK position.

But happily many former fence sitters are prepared to add that they support the Falkland Islanders position so clearly expressed in last years referendum. Basic human right to self determination.

I've been thinking about the coherence of the concept of the 'BRICS', and the extent to which it might be extensible to include other countries.

The grouping does not hang together AT ANY LEVEL.
Late-stage developing countries (BRICS) might be characterised by high levels of drift of rural populations to urban cities - but this takes place in undeveloped countries like Argentina, in BRICS like Brasil, and in developed countries like Britain.

So we must look at the degree of development of the rural areas and the now-populous 'city-states'. The US 'rust belt' is significantly derelict but has a high degree of 'service provision' and infrastructure; the mega-cities like Sao Paulo's favelas and Mumbai's Banganga slums show that fully developed megacities can never catch up with social need (even London suffers from a Victorian sewerage system).

Perhaps in all levels of national society there can be VERY few that are, in all respects, 'Developed'. Tiny 'city-states' can achieve this most easily - like Singapore; but even here the Johore Strait agricultural strip is poorly developed and there is still 'urban renewal' in old kampong slum areas.

No, even the great developed countries of the world have derelict and third world regions. Perhaps the most any country can hope for is that the few great cities that they host might be - at least for some span of time - 'state of the art'.

@3 Thank you. The Falkland Islands are in the SOUTH ATLANTIC. Nothing to do with argieland, that is, at best, in the Argentine Sea. And yes, we do have a coffin for you. 2 foot by 2 foot. As all argies are arses. In the event of a difficulty, we can split them down the middle. Aren't they used to that?
@7 You forgot to mention that, in the event of another invasion, argieland will be destroyed. They get one spanking for being naughty. Next time round, it'll be for real.
@14 How is Russia going to get involved in “training” with the argie “navy”? Salvaging it? Towing it? Teaching it which way is up? Russia isn't too good on water. Little Japan put paid to the Russian Navy.
@18 Best thing to note is that Putin has finally realised that his name is only Putin, not “Rasputin”. Also that he's stepped too far. The West hasn't “caved” and begged. He's pulling back. Removing the troops he said weren't there. Oh look, the similarity between argieland and Russia. They LIE!

Russia doesn’t want Argentina in the BRICs group. Neither does China.
What they want is cheap and easy lip service, and Argentina is the best source of that.

CFK after a call from the “Boss of the Kremlin”, told her diplomats to abstain from the Crimea UN resolution when she had previously voted against it quoting exactly the same reason for why they did not recognize the Malvinas/Falkland referendum last year.

Her point now seems to be “Because of UK double standards I will abstain in Crimea”. But will end up being a Russian useful tool on the long term.

Russia seems to understand the Kirchnerist ego and exploits it very well.

Its only China that seems to retain its status as a dynamic, powerful and evolving economy. India, Russia and Brazil have failed to deliver on expectations and other countries are emerging faster and are more promising now

Its the disparity that exists between China and the rest of the BRICS that will become a nail in the coffin for the group.

I pity this sad, frustrated individual.

Anyway, moving on from the singular idiot to the plurality of idiots with Timmerman the sycophant.

Russia is hardly welcoming Argentina into BRIC group. It has said the “ issue would require careful consideration”

That's hardly a red carpet welcome, just diplomatic speech for “hmmm...
we'll think about it for a while, don't call us. .”

So a bit of a non-story really. The Russians gained a signature for their space treaty and Timmerman did some arse kissing.

To all of those whom, as I, support the Falkland Islands:

I have been posting recently about the fictional Duchy of Grand Fenwick monarchy led by polo fanatic Duchess Gloriana XIV, allegedly supporting Argentina's pretension that the ”Falkland Islands is nothing more than a “fictional delusion of foreign colonists that illegally continue to occupy the rightfully national territory of Argentina.”

Apparently no one sees the humor and frankly you seem to be blind to the fact that CFK's public relations campaign is slowly succeeding. This latest farce with Russia is because they need friends that will turn a blind eye towards the Ukraine situation.

In turn, Argentina now has TWO permanent members of the UN Security Council on their side. It doesn't help that the US remains neutral.

And yes, my country is pandering to our kleptomaniac neighbor for economic reasons more than anything else.

Yes, obviously the Argentine claims are bogus, but it still deeply concerns me.

    @24

Don't give CFK too much credit, I must say. Maybe a little but barely.

There are two far more important dynamics at work:

    a) What has the UK brought to the table in a possible relationship to Argentina since 1983??

Absolutely nothing. There is not one thing one can mention worth of note that could sway Argentina to seek closer links to the UK. They are utterly irrelevant tangibly and in words in Argentina's sphere.

Meanwhile all these other countries send overtures and offer at least words or the wish for some relationship.

So... UK offers NOTHING, the other countries offer SOMETHING... what do you expect Argentina to choose?

    b) The UK as I have mentioned by its arrogance within Europe, its intransigence outside Europe, its wars of aggression, its diva complexes in the EU, etc, is not encouraging anyone else to get “closer”.

Those two variables are mainly responsible for the UK's retreat on all fronts, not just the Falklands. The UK's relations with the EU are at a nadir, with Russia at a nadir, with the USA at a nadir, with many African countries and India at a nadir. That is why they are making a push in Latin America, with limited success thus far.

And they have in Scotland a major internal problem to attend to.

    Simple as the above.

Speaking for myself, I greatly enjoy the Duchy of Grand Fenwick, and I've been looking forward to news of Commander DoverOverDover's appointment there as naval attache.

I'd also like to see a more robust British response, but I can also see why they might prefer to opt for a strategy of not feeding the troll. I'm less worried about Russia and China than you are, since as far as I can see there is no change in the historical position of either of them, while neither seems to be offering more than lip service to worthy sentiments about peace and dialogue that nobody could possibly object to (except of course themselves and Argentina in their own conduct). As for the US, they have nothing to gain by coming down off the fence when the UK has no need for support, but I have no doubt that if push came to shove they would.

@24 Yes, I understood about the Duchy of Fenwick being a fictional construct, I just wasn't sure where you were going with it, or why. You even claimed it was published in The Sun you naughty boy, but not even The Sun would go in such depth! So I thought it was best to leave it....
    Good effort tho!
    :-)
    ------------------------------------
The Russians nor any of the others on the UN Security Council have no interest in getting involved in any dispute with Britain over the Falklands. They have nothing to gain by doing so. Possibly the Russians might use the 'dispute', or rather use Argentina, as part of their interminable global-politicking chess games. That's what they do. They will pretend to show an interest, Argentina will lap-up the attention, Russia might use it to niggle the British on occasion. Once it no longer serves their purpose they will toss it away like an empty tube of toothpaste.

By the only reason of the military force, and a unilaterally voice that claim to be british self determined but no ones in the world believes them.

Quote2: “We are happy because the fundamental rights for the islanders to have self-determination on their islands is enshrined in numerous UN resolutions and the UN charter.”

Thats what you think it is. First The UN GA and DC makes resolutions and draft resolutions explaining the colonial situation and the sovereignty dispute asking the uk and Argentina to negotiate sovereignty taken account of islanders interests and not its wishes.
Besides the fact both bodies of the UN considers the islands a territory under a colonial situation.

The fact of the matter is there is no dispute as to the Falklands islands sovereignty. The land is owned by the Falkland Islanders and is a British Overseas Territory. Argentina can rant all they like but the people of the Falklands just wish to be left alone in peace, and recently voted to remain a BOT, by an overwhelming majority.
The elephant in the room that Argentina fails to recognize is their military adventure in 1982 was a dreadful mistake. They then claim that this has nothing to do with current Argentina, but then go on to celebrate the invasion.
Can anyone explain why every time Tinpot goes abroad at some point he talks about the Falklands. Yet when invited in London to discuss matter, when he found out that Falkland islanders would be present he RAN AWAY.
So talks were offered but he ran away. Anyone explain that, please, anyone?

    @53

Firstly, I am happily married and have been for years.

Second of all, the majority of the world support the UK position, in 2008 the UNGA voted on whether a sovereignty dispute in a NSGT overruled self-determination. 61 voted with the UK, 40 with Argentina...(22 of which were Latin countries). So stop lying,

Thirdly, the UN have NEVER said that the islanders wishes shouldn't be taken into account. LIAR. What a weak argument...the UN didn't say that sovereignty should be negotiated either.

What it said was the sovereignty dispute should be resolved through peaceful means...taking into account the UN Charter (where all people have the right to self determination), where 2008 resolution confirms this means all NSGTs people in their own lands, and the interests of the islanders.

Who is best placed to understand said interests? argentina? LOL

My advice to you is stop lying...

The world does not support you...40 countries do at the last vote (22 Latin) where's 61 voted with us..

I am sorry you despise the truth as it it kills your brainwashing.

Let's not forget either the large number who couldn't be bothered to vote at all. It's a small world indeed that supports Argentina, and it consists only of the implanted Italo-Iberian colonial populations of South America, nutters, dictatorships and a couple of others whose interests happen to coincide.

Meanwhile, even the last Chairman of the C24 believes the Falklands question shouldn't be at the C24 at all :

“Yo diría que hasta está mal ubicado el tema de Malvinas dentro del Comité de Descolonización. Porque no estamos hablando de una colonia.”
“I would say it is up misplaced Malvinas theme within the Decolonization Committee. Because we're not talking about a colony.”

This join up with the Russians makes not a blind bit of difference, russia assisted the argentine junta with weapons as some of weapony used was brought from russia. So nothing has changed. The referendum in 2013 has been enshrined into the UN,also the original statements that argentina never had anything on the islands over the past 400yrs,no claims at all,so russian intervention is nothing, especially russia has nowt to talk about with ukraine on doorstep.

l think that they are all very mentally challenged.
    @53 Liberato,
    Another of your lies.
The UN does NOT ask the UK and Argentina to “discuss Sovereignty”.
The UN merely requests the UK and Argentina to resolve the dispute, peacefully.
    Quite a different thing, really.
We've told you Argentines that we don't want anything to do with you.
You should just accept that & walk away.
lt was a UNGA Resolution which is not binding.
When did Argentina listen to anything the UN said anyway?
The UNSC issued Resolution #502 in 1982, which is binding.
“That Argentina immediately remove all of its military forces from the Falklands, etc etc” and which Argentina refused to do.
So you losers, only obey UN Resolutions that you like & refuse to obey the ones that you don't like.
Your stupid country should be booted out of the UN for a start.
And you wonder why we don't like you or want anything to do with you.

I assume by “you lot” you are including Isolde as part of the UK, rather than a Falkland Islander...good, glad you accept they can be both.

As far as recent accomplishments for the UK is concerned, in the past 12 months the UK has led numerous medical, pharmaceutical, scientific, engineering and technological advances, I am sorry that Uruguay has almost none...other than your long awaited “free energy” and “new politic” papers the world is waiting for with baited breath.

I have a good laugh at your success claims from the early 19th century...my favourite Uruguay success from that period was your defeat of the Argentine forces with the help of the Spanish Falkland Islanders...many of whom became your countrymen...none became Argentine.

However, you taking credit for it is good fun too, but then you have nothing else to be proud of, except for your “energy research” lmfao...you are a nobody, a jumped up arrogant racist buffoon....but still a nobody.

@53: Reading UN GA resolution 2065(XX) it makes four requests to be upheld during negotiations:

    1. To find a peaceful solution to the problem
    2. Due regard to the provisions and objectives of the UN Charter
    3. Due regard to Resolution 1514 (XV) of the General Assembly
    4. Due regard to the interests of the people of the Falkland Islands

Negotiations were proceeding between the Argentine Republic and Great Britain in March 1982 but the Argentine Republic decided to unilaterally terminate these negotiations in favor of settling the Argentine Republic's dispute over sovereignty by use of force in direct breach of the UN Charter

The colonial situation which covers the case of the Falkland Islanders was the imposition of a Crown Colony government on the Falkland Islanders by the British Metropole and it is the ending of this particular colonial situation that the UN Fourth Committee and UN Committee on Decolonization seek to end by the British allowing the Falkland Islanders Self-Determination and choice of Free Association or Independence whilst preserving the Territorial Integrity of both Great Britain and the Falkland Islands (Malvinas)

Argentine pretensions to the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands(Malvinas) can only be settled by the UN International Court of Justice by explicit consent of the Falkland Islanders

As previously atated the argument of falklands islands can only be dicussed by the Falkland Island Legals peoples, and the UN ,the British goverment can only be the referee,as once the falklands had referendum in 2013 that was accepted ,the british goverment ties with falklands were reduced. As we all know in all countries the falkland residents dont want to talk to argentina at anytime. So just go away and leave the falklands alone.
