Amazing how swiftly the Spanish government can get around to working on abdication laws now that they need them, but can't seem to get anywhere near dealing with Catalonia's quest for a referendum.

Seeing how most Spanish speaking countries have been served by a republican form of government, I think that a constitutional monarchy is the best fit for Spain. Pity the idea didn't take off more in Latin America. They would have been better emulating the UK than the US.

This was on the the cards for sometime: turns out the elephant in the room was in fact an elephant! (an ex-elelphant I should add).

    Hello,

    Just a couple of points:

Spain already has legislation, which regulates the monarch’s possible abdication.

For many years’ it has been widely rumoured that Juan Carlos has kept a succession of mistresses. It is also said that, during the infamous Elephant hunting trip –when the ruler was still president of Spain’s WWF– the press photograph of the Spanish sovereign with the slain ‘Loxodonta Africana’, pictured his present paramour, too. Furthermore, for many years’ rumours have persisted that the king was one of the several secret instigators of the failed 1981 coup d’état. However, some sources claim that –at the last minute– the king got cold feet, withdrew his support for the military uprising and is no longer trusted by some in Spanish Establishment on neither the Left nor the Right.

    Cheers!

    Jim, in Madrid.

They showed the pictures of this brave man on the BBC last night stood next the very sorry sight of the beautiful elephant the bastard shot. You can only hope that his end is as horrific and painful as it was for that poor elephant.
Empathy towards animals was never a Hispanic strong point!

    @ 3, interesting stuff.

I understand culls of elephants, lions etc have to take place from time to time, but I can't quite fathom the pleasure any rich tourist gets from paying to be chauffeured, by Jeep or helicopter, to kill and pose next to one of these beasts. Maybe if I win the lottery I might have a change of view on this.

Re: “Empathy towards animals was never a Hispanic strong point!”

This is yet another asinine generalization, which is utterly untrue, as usual. Many Spaniards are keen shots (hunters) and/or, anglers and in common with their fellow sportsmen of other nations, they have a vested interest in animal welfare, in order to maintain a plentiful, healthy stock of game and fish.

As a former resident of W. Africa, I never cease to be dumfounded by the degree of bleeding-heart, sobbing support for BEASTS such as elephants (which are so vigorously numerous that they need periodic culling, anyway –I do not condone the illicit ivory trade, of course). Equally astounding is the widespread, absolute indifference toward the cruel fate of the some 20.000 HUMAN Sub-Saharan children who die each and every day, for the want of clean water and basic, cheap medicines.

    Cheers!

    Jim, in Madrid.

It seems that Charlie, the Prince of Wales (may he NEVER be King) had an idol in Charlie, King of Spain and his shagging everything in sight.

Regretabbly both of these twats put a cloud over “Royalty” in general.

The UK does of course have the epitome of how it SHOULD be done in our glorious Queen, long may she rein in good health.

COPY OF ARTICLE 56 OF THE SPANISH CONSTITUTION

    Artículo 56

I've had enough visits to Spain to know exactly how they treat their animals out there. No such thing as the RSPCA, they have a horrendous feral cat and problem because there is no municipal body who bothers to catch castrate/spay and rehome. They bait them trap them and then gas them.

Read about Mexico and Brazil in the 19th century you worthless fat Ozzer. They were monarchies then: they were two of the poorest NATIONS in the Americas. Had ZERO development under the Brazilian emperors and Mexico's European-led monarchs.

IN THE SAME time, Argentina who never was a monarchy and hates monarchies like no other nation on Earth, grew at 10-12% per annum, and in 30 years was 10 times richer than them.

It's funny how these oily-faced Anglos blast me and others for “gross, crass overgeneralizations” of Anglos, and then in the same breath commit the same felonious act.

In this specific example this Pecksniffian attitude is particularly salient, given that Anglos are responsible along with Romans for the most proven extinctions of animals on EARTH, including their beloved brethren the Falklanders who ruthlessly EXTERMINATED a sentient, intelligent mammal, in the Warrah.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warrah

Let's not even talk about the British isles Bear, the Ozzers and the Thylacine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warrah the NorthAms and the Passenger Pigeon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warrah

And how about the Great Auk?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warrah

Look at the habitat of this magnificent creature, and what SOCIETY is in the middle of it?

And in which country was Fox hunting invented?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warrah

And look at the list of countries that practice this crap, all anglos and there are the Romans again.

And guess which society performs the oh so wonderful, tender, and loving activity of PIERCING THE SKULL OF THIS AWFUL, HORRIFIC CREATURE with pointed clubs and just leaving them there with their brains oozing out??

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warrah

    Yeah, the proud anglo-CANADIANS.

So yes, indeed Anglo empathy for living beings, as the bountiful evidence above clearly demonstrates, is second to none huh?

“Re: Bullshit! I've had enough visits to Spain to know exactly how they treat their animals. No such thing as the RSPCA”, et cetera.

I’ve lived here since early 1967. Previously, I was a frequent visitor to this country.

The national Spanish equivalent of the RSPCA is the Sociedad Protectora de Animales, see here:
    http://www.animalhelp.es/protectoras2.htm
    http://www.animalhelp.es/protectoras2.htm
and lots of other similar organizations such as:
    http://www.animalhelp.es/protectoras2.htm

Many more entities work to prevent mistreatment of animals. There’s a Spanish branch of the WWF and even a vociferous group of people who vehemently oppose bullfighting.

Regarding the culling of wild cats, here; this is often a question of available funds (why do many UK roads have potholes dangerous to PEOPLE’S lives?)

Having been brought up as a Welsh Marches bumpkin, lived in the W. African bush and having married the daughter of quite a well-known Spanish matador, I understand, respect animals and would never condone needlessly harming a beast –especially me dear ol’ wife. However, I AM in favour of NECESSARY rural activities such as badger control and foxhunting. And I maintain that it’s a shame that our starving FELLOW MEN are not shown such pity as certain –particularly the EXOTIC– friggin’ fauna. At breakfast, most people couldn’t care less about porcine welfare, other than that before being sacrificed, the pig should have ‘lived the good life’ and thus produce tender, succulent sausages, juicy kidneys and, tasty crisp bacon.

So do stop talking abject NONSENSE!

The way I understand it (after watching TVE News) is that provision was made when writing the constitution for an “organic law” to be formulated, when needed, to deal with certain situations that may arise during his reign - abdication being one of those and removal from the throne another. My Spanish is a bit rusty these days but it sounds about right.

I was living in Spain as part of a large Spanish family-by-marriage from 1970 to 1985 and well remember the day Franco died - supposedly :) We all reckoned that he had died a couple of weeks earlier and the PTB needed time to get their ducks lined up before all hell broke loose. Thankfully we got Juan Carlos, not the Army, which is what many - including my Grandfather-in-Law - expected to happen. When news came out that Franco was on his last legs Abuelo headed off to his workshop with a bottle of Fino to clean his guns and make more bullets :-) Interesting times... but it came good in the end.

IMO Juan Carlos was the best thing to happen to Spain for probably hundreds of years if not the best ever. It's time the poor bastard had a rest.

Perhaps. But some of your forebears DO have the ignominious antecedent of regularly having organizing hunting parties which were formed with the express purpose of shooting your indigenous, Argentinean Indians, who were considered little better than vermin and in need of extermination. This barbaric practice wasn’t ended until well into the 1920’s. Of course, not awfully long before the 20’s, it was common practice for certain whites to keep slaves –over whom the masters held the gift of life and death– in conditions of appalling cruelty. And that’s not to mention the antics of Hitler, Stalin and more recent ‘merry little megalomaniacs –nor yet the USA’a activities in twentieth century Latin America…

Moral: no man is wise to believe your own nationalistic propaganda, much of which is pure misinformation and undiluted bullshit…

    Re:

Not correct. Perhaps you’re confusing primary legislation (must be voted into law by a plenary parliamentary session) with ministerial dispositions (approved by cabinet to regulate specific, relatively minor matters of an ad hoc nature).

I ain’t sure but I THINK that’s right. After all, Spain is a democracy so the Govt cannot do as it wishes at the drop of a hat, without reference to the properly convened and constituted Parliamentary Chambers.

That’s to say, as mere ‘natural phenomena’ that merits much more attention than that given to the tens of thousands of starving, disease ridden children who die each day, on a planet which has more than sufficient resources to remedy the matter but can’t be bothered to do so because nobody’s going to make a huge, fast buck out of the deal??? If so, the world’s gone completely fcuking mad...

    Cheers!

    Jim.

    Jim.

Going by the sheer law of averages at least 10% of those poor, starving masses in Africa that you care so deeply about are likely to be homosexual by birth. Do you care 90% less about them?
would you only save the 'straight' ones should you be able?
How would you tell? Would you sit in judgement upon high?

hmm.... Are some more equal than others?

    Cheers!

Ps. Hope the wife hasn't “walked into a door” recently?

Of course! Save the 90%. What value to society do the 10% hold?

“Going by the sheer law of averages at least 10% …in Africa …are likely to be homosexual.

Hope the wife hasn't “walked into a door” recently?”

I didn’t suggest that gays should be saved nor otherwise. Rather, I noted the capricious preference the Media shows toward that which it finds curious, exotic ‘outside the human or animal norms’ et cetera and how an utterly disproportional, excessive emphasis is placed upon the often-inconsequential activities of certain relatively unimportant social MINORITIES, simply in order to titillate the chattering classes’ fleeting, vacuous sentimentality. Meanwhile, the interests of those of the aptly named Silent Majority are completely ignored. Remember the old Newspaper adage, “Dog bites man –NOT NEWS. Man bites dog –HOT NEWS!”. To which I counter, “Just ‘cos summat’s boring, don’t mke it unimportant”

So come awf it, Mate. If you don’t want to be thought a nasty, manipulative little person, do refrain from putting words into my mouth. And do desist from that hoary daft trick of asking me if I’ve stopped beating my wife –it’s she who trashes me. I’m a closet SM, ol’ fruit! (JOKE)

    41 Anglotino.

Re: The Spanish king’s abdication, I’ve just come across this Tweet in which, it is claimed that that after abdication, Juan Carlos will lose his immunity from prosecution and –possibly– be subjected to legal proceedings for alleged human rights violations, et cetera, brought by far-left political interests. The prospect of the former King’s being the accused in a public court, is too much for both Spain’s Conservative and Socialist parties to stomach and they’re now urgently cooperating to avoid such an eventuality, by changing the law:

    https://twitter.com/traducinando/status/473622052239208448?refsrc=email

Of course, I don’t know if this is true. Also, it’s a complicate rigmarole but worth reading. Presumably, those who don’t know Spanish, can translate the text with Google Translate.
