Falkland Islands are enjoying the benefits of a healthy well managed economy, with excellent present and future prospects in its main industries, but also face challenges such as the need for manpower, closely linked to immigration, planning for a balance between environment and oil industry, a modern government and the continued attempts by Argentina to stifle the Islands economy and block economic development. @2. Argentina's claim to the Falkland Islands is virtually non-existent and is based purely on proximity. FACT. Perhaps you would like to argue otherwise and produce some evidence that supports Argentina's claims so it can be questioned. Waiting...

    OMG the Huffing Post!

    Bahahahahaha

Just when you thought Marcos can't make a bigger fool of himself he does!

Anyone can submit articles to the Huffington Post, that is how it works. And any intelligent person would start laughing at paragraph 3 when he says that Argentina asserted sovereigny in 1811 without even mentioned early UK sovereignty claims.

It is no wonder marcos keeps tripping himself up when he blatantly ignores historically documented events that keep disproving his lies.

Argentina is NOT the successor state to the Virreinato del Río de la Plata.

It doesn't matter how much everyone tries to twist it, it simply isn't.

It isn't even the successor state to Liga de los Pueblos Libres or Provincias Unidas de Sudamérica.

It is a continuation of all these entities but it is not the SUCCESSOR state to them.

John Wight can write whatever he wants. But after 200 hundred fruitless years, you really need to help your country get the feck over it.

There is no foreseeable future where the Falkland Islands become part of Argentina.

    Not one!

And you know it, which is why you can only rely on unknowns such as John Wight and the twisting of historical events and not on anything that is happening in 2014.

Why don't you vent your frustration and anger in a more fruitful way by working for your country to dig it out of the hole its in? Or, are you like Think, who has given up, bitter, shrivelled and constantly pissed, clutching a whisky bottle?

The reason we are doing so well economically is down to the determination of the people.
We will never let the Argentine so called blockade of the Islands stop us doing what we want and no matter what pressure they or any so called follower of their dictator policies try to do, we are going to move forward with or without them.

Quite soon Oil will start to flow and everything we have endured from Argentina will be history. To think that they have failed miserably to stop our development simply adds to our determination to succeed. Soon all the money that Britain ever spent on our defence will be rewarded as we the Islanders repay these generous costs that have been necessary to keep a dictator at a safe distance.

Argentina through its policy of refusing to accept that we exist has lost them the chance to share in our discoveries. It is never likely that we will ever again trust Argentina enough to offer a share of our hard work given that they still continue to impose blockades in trade.

We continue to grow in everything we do and most of the real world has recognised this. We have according to worldwide reports the most efficient fishing industry and to think Argentina could have been a huge part of this had they not walked away from the agreement they had with us.
We are today still the best little country in the world. British and very proud.

@2 You really must try to do better than trawling the internet with tags like “argentina” and “legitimate”. All you're going to find is loonies and latams. Wight is a twonk. Take a look at this. “At the beginning of the 19th-century Spain held sovereignty over the islands, occupying them for 40 years up until 1811, after which its former colony of Argentina asserted sovereignty.” Really? In 1770/1, Spain was forced to admit British sovereignty. What a shame that Britain didn't temporarily vacate its settlements until 1776. That's only 35 years. On what basis did the colony of argieland assert sovereignty? When, exactly, did the Spanish Crown agree that argieland was sovereign? You can't “assert sovereignty” unless you are sovereign. Where's the “legal possession” of the Islands? There is NO principle in international law, then or now, that would allow argieland to “inherit”. Can't be done. And where's the first argie visit? I recall that. Guy called Jewett, wasn't it? An American pirate. A criminal cannot “assert” a legal action related to sovereignty on behalf of a non-sovereign colony. Forget the twonk's 40 years. Any argie claim is based on 6 weeks in 1832. How, exactly, does a dead man assert sovereignty? Because the “authorised” individual, Mestivier, was dead. And is there an assertion that murderers could assert the sovereignty of a rogue state?

Industry comes from the Latin industria, which means “diligence, hard work,” and the word is still used with that meaning. Perfectly correct usage of the word in the context of the Falklands

    “an old, useless queen.”
    describes CFK to a T.

who the f*ck would emigrate to the stinky islets?

Take that up with the Argentine government. They are bursting a gut trying to get their hands on the place.

“stinky” ? I would imagine that would apply to many areas of BA.

19 paulcedron (#). You haven't a clue about economies by your lack of intelligence. It makes no difference whether one farms sheep on a remote Island That Argentina so badly wants or whether it is a Country manufacturing goods. Fact is per head of capita the Falkland islanders are a hell of a lot better of financially than the poverty stricken Argentina.
Many years ago that Country was the richest in South America and sported the largest beef herds anywhere to be found.
What happened to it all. Could it be successive stripping of real assets by various corrupt leaders or has the people just simply given up all hope.

Meanwhile here on the Falkland Islands we are reaching out to the future in a very positive way. Our industries all be it not what you appear to have in mind 19 paulcedron (#) is actually growing year on year.
That says to me and many Islanders we are actually doing very well thank you and above all the more we consolidate the achievements the less likely Argentina has of taking it away from us. It is worth keeping that one in your mind. Have a nice day , we are .

the first thing the islanders should do, if they had the guts, is to kick this wannabe viceroy right in the ass.
    and establish democratic elections.
and spend all the money they get from the honest british taxpayer in education and healthcare.

Just imagine those who stay when the others leave to go home to blighty for the rest of the year. How lonely must that be ? Friendless, nothing to do, costing the GB taxpayer (in more ways than one). Wasting away on cold pariah islands while the smart kelpites back home in England build their lives in cities where opportunities abound today, not 2019, or 2020 or 2025.
Getting left behind to tend sheep in the rain while the smart ones party on in GB. Careers and partners.

    @19

“fishing a few squid or raising a bunch of sheep is having industries?”

Yes in a place like the Falklands with 3000 folks.

But let's look at your country with 40 million people.

The most advanced aircraft you can manufacture is a training jet with a name like babies diapers. And that first flew in 1983.

    Where's your jet engine manufacturer???????

If you have so many people (13.333 times as many people as the Falklands have) why is your country always broke, bumming off other countries and why do you need foreign firms to help you get your oil out?

The Falklands Islands diminutive industries ensure these people have more money per head of capita than yours can ever dream for.

Why do you have to go crawling to USA courts to try and avoid paying back money you bummed off other countries like tramps-are you always going to hold your begging bowl out to the world instead of doing some work and making your own way in life?

    @31

If the Islanders were Argentinian , they could enjoy being in debt, breathing in an atmosphere of burning tyres, freezing their asses off because Argentina cannot guarantee a fuel supply in the winter, and think how well they would be defended against the outside world with an airforce made of 1950s/1960s technology aircraft (that consider it lucky to return to base) and ships that to pass their Argentinian certificates of seaworthiness have to sink in port first.

That farce from start to finish! False clown dressed as governor speaking in the first person plural (we), the idiot, born in United Kingdom. “we will continue to promote a clear and unequivocal message about who we are...” No idiot, everyone knows who they are british okupas in Malvinas Argentinas Isles. As the idiot article suggests, there are no “falklanders” (do not exist), native. They all went in search of better opportunities, partly due to the flow of money that came from Britain, so in the last census, or talking about percentages of births in the Islands (uppercase because they are Argentine) because it does not suit them.
Take off the mask of a clown, and says directly, which is Britain (and not the “people Falklander” which does not exist) that explodes or intends to do, fishery resources and hydrocarbons from the Malvinas Argentinas.

    @39 José

Its interesting: 30+ years ago the language of “squatters”, “pirates”, “Okupus” etc was never used? Even your murderous Junta leaders of the time never sunk to the tactic of insult and name calling.
Now, many years later, you drag out this non-people/untermensch argument to support your case. Smacks very much of desperation Jose.

Paulcedron, Jose Malvinero: You two really are a pair of dicks. Jose, what happened to the native population when you lot started “pirating” what has become Argentina? Stop talking shite. Paul, you reckon you have a “modern government”? Apparently, you need to keep up with things - your “vice”- president is taking his title way too seriously, isn't he? I emigrated, happily, it cost me a lot of money (“they” didn't deport or plant me here).
Yes we have a modern government - we don't need to strike, we don't have riot police, there is no unemployment, no gun crime, no drugs, the air is unpolluted, we actually really do elect our politicians (note: apparently we all voted for your sorry apology of a president, although I don't actually remember this happening, I would have been there if I had ;-) ), the Governor is a bit like Her Majesty - there to play the part of our Queen, we (the electorate) choose what policies will affect our country. If we are going to make fun of sheep, maybe one of us over here should become your president and shepherd you sorry bunch and teach you the value of truth, values and honest government?
When your kind started talking sense, I will listen to your bleatings. Until that time, keep quiet and let the big boys make the decisions.

“Falklands developing strongly and with a high international community profile”

    Well done!!! Well done guys!!!

Now you have got your “international profile” where is SHOULD be, now all you have to do is keep it there. Rest assured that the bad old days of forgetting about you or, trying to forget about you in the South Atlantic are over. We all in the UK wish all of our brothers and sisters in the Falkland Islands the very best...... We've got your back.

P.S:- Is it me or have those sour grapes that Paulcedron and Jose Malvinero been eating given them tummy ache? sure reads like it has.

Paulecdron and Jose- look I know you two are thick and dumb! - but do please check facts before you so repeatedly make total arses out of yourselves on here!
The Governor can only speak in the Assembly if he is INVITED to by the Assembly members through the Speaker - who himself is chosen by the elected Members.
He did not 100% write that speech - he will have added a few words and adjectives and phrases to make it sound “him” but as with the Queen,s Speech at the State opening of a new parliamentary session in UK - it is largely written by the elected Govt and with assistance from department heads.
He is the Queen,s representative in the Islands so it is correct that he opens the main annual Budget session and makes the main annual review speech.
We happen to have a DIFFERENT Democratic system to yours - that is all.
Grow up and get over it!

As regards his uniform - well we the people of the Islands voted to keep it(London actually suggested doing away with it)- and we PAY for it - so it is bugger all to do with you. Do we complain about the poncy clothes your presidential guard wear? - no not our business!

Well yes-farmers tend to have more animals on a farm than the number of farmers looking after them-that's been going on for centuries.

My late Uncle had 200 sheep and 200 cattle- per one farmer, that's a ratio of 1:400

@ 62, Great you have an opinion. But WHY NOT explain what you disagree with? Is it the statement that “Anglo-American Imperialism should die”? Maybe you believe in British/American Manifest Destiny.

Or do you disagree with the fact that Britain is disintegrating before the world's eyes. The UK is wallowing in a legacy of massive debt.

Do you believe a bankrupt country can support a Naval exercise to south America? Do YOU live in reality or do you live in Star Trek?

Do you believe that Argentina has lost interest in what they believe is part of Argentina?

Argentina can believe what they like, we know that the Falklands are not part of Argentina & never have been.
Also, l disagree with your assessment of the UK.
If Britain was as you say, then Argentina would have again tried to invade our home.
They have not, ergo they know that they couldn't.
Oh they want our lslands, right enough.
Even though they know they have no right to them.

Oh Jbrenn *sigh* if you insist.

”Because Britain is now a crumbling shell of its former self, (they produce nothing)“

    UK's GDP is US$2.44 trillion.

So you lies. It obviously *sigh* does produce something. Indeed *sigh* it annual produces more that 5x what Argentina does. But that is probably low considering Argentina have been caught lying so frequently about their economic indicators.

”perhaps soon Britain will be UNABLE to defend it's ludicrous claim on the Falklands.”

That theory didn't work out too well in 1982 now did it.

So as you can see, your comment at #61 was as much a mix of fantasy and lies and mine was at #62.

Yes - Argentina has no jet engine manufacturer. But it is not a former superpower needing an enormous GDP so it can cling onto a superpower model of Imperialism.

Rolls Royce is a mixed story. Bully for the jet engines. We're #2! We're #2! . . . . yet another sad story for Rolls Royce Motors, which is owned and managed by BMW! The Rolls Royce luxury car is . . . German.

Have you even stopped to think why the company was for sale?
Obviously they were having problems about making a profit.
What would have happened if no-one had bought it or if the Directors refused to sell?
l'll tell you what would have happened……the company would now have gone broke & there would be NO Rolls Royces manufactured anymore.

“ It's nonsensical to compare economies of Britain and Argentina”

No, it is relevant (cause and effect) because Britain's industry is better than Argentina's it can help stop Argentina's Imperialist ambitions=T45 Built in Britain-Typhoon=built in Britain-Astute submarines=built in Britain. (I'll spare you the list of arms that would wipe out Argentina's armed forces for decades after a retaliation to an Argentine strike.

It is nonsensical to suggest as you have that the UK cannot mount a task force to the South Atlantic-irrelevant!
We don't need a large task force to go down south.

1 T45 can dispense with ALL of Argentina's Air force if they attack, before they cross the Argentine coast if necessary.
1 Astute submarine can counter attack and destroy Argentine military establishments.
4-10 Tornado GR4s would take two days at the most to reach the Falklands, and if Argentina attacked, their counter attack would cripple Argentina's forces in the south for decades.

“it can cling onto a superpower model of Imperialism”

Which Argentina wants to replicate by trying to colonise land that is not there's , yet it is according to them because they say so=behaving like a wannabe imperialist power.

If Argentina really repudiates the ex-imperialist past of Great Britain, why are they trying to replicate it's mistakes?

I presume that is your opinion....because CFK and her cronies think differently - they want the islands for Argentina, at any cost...and to populate them with Argies.
Don't you find this contradictory ??
Why the f*ck does CFK insist that if the Argies can't own the Falkland Islands, then they should not be allowed to transform themselves into a successful, independent State...What's the matter with her ?? and then the UK is accused of colonialism....what stinks is her attitude.
