Germany were the most consistent team in the tournament to congrats to them. Beating both Brazil and Argentina in South America is no easy feat.
Messi getting Golden Ball is beyond a joke! Another indication of how decisions are made in FIFA.
Hope the rioting in BA stops soon

The thing I find most astonishing is how the overwhelming weight of support, on every continent, including South America, was for Germany and against Argentina. That is very telling.

It doesn't say much about the game that was afoot; but it speaks volumes about the fact that, in truth, Argentina stands alone and desperately isolated in the world.

Whilst CFK can, occasionally, twist the arms of some of the leaders of neighbouring nations to make the right disingenuous noises needed to help her domestic propaganda; those same leaders, with the support of their people, are all quietly signing new treaties with Argentina's avowed enemies.

Argentina's consolation prize? A Golden Ball trophy for Lionel Messi, that, within minutes, had already become the most derided award within living memory .. accumulating more howls of ridicule than even Obama's laughable Nobel Peace Prize.

@4 “Argentina stands alone and desperately isolated in the world.”

But the Argentina government are stating that the fact that Putin visited for a few hours proves they are NOT isolated. :)

Did anyone else find the 'stalker camera' on Messi after the game a bit much? Surely they should have been focusing on the winning team.

Elaine, the point of the camera was to show the world the glum face of the worlds 'best footballer'. This is a nice bit of schaldenfreud that the whole world can enjoy. Yes, the Argentinians are despised by many who know them and their foul viveza criolla ways worlwide. This time the liar nation that thinks its ok to lie, cheat and resist paying your debts got soundly beaten. A great foil to the so called hand of god where the little worm openly celebrated his little bit of VC and thus became a national hero.
They need to reform their morals in the Dark Country but the way things are its never gonna happen.

@6 I got that but after 30 seconds I wanted them to move on to the Germans celebrating their win.

Politics aside, Argentina made it to the WCFs. I didn't think they played their best football throughout the tournament but they contributed to an entertaining final last night. The Argentine players had to wait a long time for the ceremony, were hugely disappointed and stood with good grace. Let's be honest, the game was close and could have gone either way.

If we are talking politics, it was very noticeable that Merkel turned up to support the German team and CFK couldn't be arsed to support the Argentine team.

Yup, could have gone either way.

    The key difference between the teams was that Messi was off-form on the day;
his look afterwards showed that the award that he was given was not earned and therefore debased by FIFA.
And one award winner didn't bother to turn up for his 'gong'!

Dilma looked like she had sucked a lemon and wished she was anywhere else but there. She should have at least copied the German Chancellor and brightened up a bit when the Germans presented. (On the other hand, we don't know what Putin said to her).

The actual presentation of the awards were an embarrassment - underprofessional by the stage-party.

It's quite clear, taking into account the comments here, that some Islanders are similar to The Campora boys...they always mixing things (sports with politics) with extreme fanatism !!!

The final match was really a nice game defined in the second half of the additional time. So it was quite balanced. Much better performance than the achivements of a decadent English national team without personality or any willingness to succed......learn no to leave the next WC so early !!!

By the way do the FI have a footbal team that represents the Islands? Do they have two (one for one Island)? Where do they play?

I will not make any excuse nor acusse of favoritism to the German team. The Argentine media has the very same attitude. The players do the same. The Germans won a beautiful game and the were the best in the championship.
The Argentine team did also a magnificent championship supplementing with effort, and sacrifice, some technical shortcomings.

Laughing about the losing ones is a sign of mediocrity and its typical of those incompetent that enloy others defeats.

#18 If you had spent any time in Germany you would have found:

There is a certain lack of tolerance and less humanity, especially to foreigners
British creative industries are far superior to theirs
Britains financial expertise is far superior to theirs

Germany now owns many British companies and grafts their manufacturing skills onto British creations. The results are often world beaters. But… when German designers are let loose on things like the Mini it can result in ugly awful things like this….http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-review/mini/countryman/first-drives/mini-cooper-s-countryman-all4

I don't see any comments making fun of the game, just the political aftermath and the undisguised lack of graciousness of Dilma that a Euro team and not a LATAM team won.

BTW, if you want to criticise is for mixing football and politics, forget it, Argentina's State football team politicised it themselves when they brought out their Malvinas banner.

I had a great time driving into North Vancouver yesterday with my German supporter “earmuffs” on the mirrors of my German car.

I am very pleased Germany won.

I think the fact Argentina failed to score a goal in 4hrs of semi-final/final play suggests that it would hardly have been a fitting victory.

Secondly, Aguerro trying to gouge out Schweinsteigers eye was probably worth a defeat in itself.

Thirdly, Germany were the better team throughout the tournament and probably edged it on the night.

Finally..any team that stands behind a banner that supports colonialism, ethnic cleansing and a fantasy version of history have already mixed sport with politics and are not worthy world champions.

Generally most people in the UK would have though “anyone but the Germans”, but yesterday it was proven otherwise...everyone I talked to wanted germany to win.

If you have to ask why there are so many outraged people because of a sign held up by the Argentine team, then you are more stupid than I took you for. Which in itself is quite an achievement.

As far as not winning anything in decades goes...Argentina have only won the World Cup once, in 1986 when they had to cheat to do it.

Obviously, the “victory” in 1978 doesnt count as that was “under the Junta” and we know nothing that happened “under the Junta” had anything to do with Argentina.

    Hope that clears it up...

    2) Did the germans celebrate??? they won the world cup, and just jump a litttle and smile for the photo?? No passion this guys.
    3) Arg was a fair team in all its matches. Didnt make a goal with the hand, didnt kick the back of any player, didnt “tirarse para que le cobren penal” like Robben did, didnt bite (morder) any player, etc. Arrived at the final and lose with dignity. Didnt CHEAT, like the brit propaganda machine, not independent wants to suggest & show : Messi comiéndose los mocos en un entrenamiento ( Isaw it only in the BBC), etc etc.
And no Malvinas propaganda bans, nothing of that. Arg played fairly, fairly.

I agree with you entirely, Rugby is a true sport. How many times have we seen diving and holding back in the WC. Not to mention the shouting at the referee to try and change his decision, you want to try that in rugby, you would be sent to the sinbin for ten minutes. They really ought to bring that in football.I think this WC has been the dirtiest in living memory.

The Pumas could be a great team if the Rugby Board stopped bickering among themselves. You really need a great player and captain like Augustin Pichot to knock some heads together . Rugby is no longer an amateur sport and to win its a full time occupation
The same can be said for our Uruguayan Teros. Uruguayan Rugby is becoming increasingly popular in the interior with a lot of young players to chose from.
Now that rugby sevens is an Olympic Sport I think this will be a great fillip to the game.
I wouldn't write off the Chileans or the Brazilians. In particular the women's team in Brazil seems to be training pretty hard for that event.

They went out to Brazil early and privately buit their own training camp as they didn't trust the holders to deliver to the standards they require!
    (…)
Argentina should make the semi-finals but I am not 100% convinced about Brazil having a clean run.
Is there a possibility that Brazil will collapse under the incredible pressure? That the weight of expectation might be to overbearing?

We just came to play a game of football.

If you feel you must use a sport on an international stage for a show of political arrogance to try and show you don't care who you stick it to... you should at least, try to win .

As usual, you didn't have what it takes to back up your mouth.

We're still laughing at you, just like your 'bestest buddies' Brazil etc .

@ 61 pollo (that really suits you)
“again, do you have any kind of national team there?”

The Falklands sent their own fullbore target rifle team to Bisley for the Open Championships and damn good they were.

Learnt to shoot by shooting geese in the head with a 0.22rf lr rifle in all that wind. Any of them would have no trouble at all putting a 7.62x51 target bullet in your tiny head at 1,000 yards (621M for you numbskulls or should I say NOskulls).

I would pay real money to see that.

Can't wait for the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.

Even if the underfunded RG teams can afford to travel there, they won't win anything, and still won't be able to look the Germans in the eye.

Watch the UK walk all over them when it comes to the medal count.

“the uk won a medal or two in the last olympics because they were the hosts.
    anyway, who cares about athletics?

    Says who, niño ??

The Olympics are far more important than the Soccer World Cup.

Poor loser - Argentina soundly beaten in the Olympics - and we won more than “ one or two” medals.

Are you seriously saying that the host nations are fixing the results??
Ha ha, only in Argentina would someone expect that.
Will that be your excuse when Brazil beats you?

Maybe there is a small training advantage and morale boost for the host country.

    2010 Winter Olympics
    Vancouver

    Canada 1st - 26 medals

    Russia 11th - 15 medals

    Great Britain 19th - 1 gold

    Argentina - no medals
    7 athletes in 3 events

    2012 Summer Olympics London

    Great Britain 3rd - 65 medals

    Russia 4th - 81 medals

    Canada 36th - 18 medals

    Argentina 42nd - 4 medals

    2014 Winter Olympics
    Russia

    Russia 1st - 33 medals

    Canada 3rd - 25 medals

    Great Britain 19th - 4 medals

    Argentina - no medals

Oh, and Germany beat you fairly in Soccer too !!!!

65 medals is hardly 'one or two'
    4 is a bit closer.

So now Paulie Squealeron is saying host nations 'fix' competitions. What went wrong in Brazil then?
Seems he knows nothing at all about sport, not just about football.

and PabloCredenza still hasn't acknowledged the superior athleticism, skill, and teamwork of the German players, that allowed them to beat Argentina so handily.

No congratulations, no “well played Worthy Adversary”, from PabloCredenza or any of the Argie Trolls - just shows they are only “sportsmen” when they win.

    @75
Thanks for the Stats on the Olympics. Made me feel all warm inside! I was in London for the Summer Olympics, just fantastic it was!

So, Argentina only got 4 medals? Not 65 like the UK? How odd considering all the chest-thumping arrogance about being rich and powerful and sophisticated. On all my travels in LatAm many, many people I have met there say that the Argies are snobs and think (falsely) that they are somehow superior. Not very popular it would seem.

I said from the start I thought Germany were the best TEAM in the World Cup. Pollo McSquealer kept banging on about Messi. Others equally focused far to much on individuals. Now he has the cheek to talk about team sports (!) after accusing me of knowing nothin, zero (0) about football. Ha ha! The tosser.
So, 4 medals in the Summer Olympics in London. 1 silver in Rio.
    Not a great record.

I have said on other threads that I didn't expect much from the English team this time and never deviated from it.
I also was one of the first to congratulate Germany, as I would have done any country that won.
Maybe it is time he stopped posting here. Never won a debate in his life.

Kind regards to Mrs Tempest and any little Tempestitos (!)

    How Amazing are these argies,
they ridicule us for not winning more medals at the Olympics,
    yet they won none,

they try to ridicule us over the commonwealth games,
yet Argentina is not even taking part,

so what is all the fuss over,
why are you argies so jealous of us, are you envy of us, or is it just plain hatred of everything British...

    b) members of the Chavez-inspired Bank of the South, a legal entity since 2009, yet has NO money still, 2014!. (Cristina promised $4 billion as part of her country's responsibility in the set-up, yet to be seen!)
    c) member of UNASUR/CELAC/OAS which have done nothing of note for a long time
    d) member of the 'most notorious debtors in the history of the world club' -informal!

I could go on but am losing the will to live. Off for a nice pint of bitter in one of North london's lovely 'garden' Pubs.

A little humour to lighten the mood, and reassure PabloCredenza the Inferior, we the North Americans and Brits, do not pick on the Argentines more than anyone else.

    Apologies to our French friends.

    A Bit of British Humour:

The train was quite crowded and a U.S. Marine walked the entire length
of the train looking for a seat, but the only seat left was taken by a
well dressed, middle aged French woman's poodle.
The war-weary Marine asked, “Ma'am may I have that seat”?
The French woman just sniffed and said to no one in particular
“Americans are so rude. My little Fifi is using that seat”.
The Marine walked the entire train again, but the only seat left was
    under that dog.
Please Ma'am, may I sit down, I'm very tired?
She snorted, “Not only are you Americans rude you are also arrogant”.
This time the Marine didn't say a word, he just picked up the little
dog, tossed it out the train window and sat down.
The woman shrieked “Someone must defend my honour! This American should
    be put in his place!”
An English gentleman sitting nearby spoke up. “Sir, you Americans seem
to have a penchant for doing the wrong thing. You hold your fork in
the wrong hand. You drive your cars on the wrong side of the road.
And now, Sir, you seem to have thrown the wrong bitch out the window”.

    Hi Troy!
    haha! @81

No, couldn't get Chiclets or 'singles', (polluted chinese fake cigarettes sold individually), anywhere! Not a starving kid in sight! How disappointing... (refreshing!)
No desperate looking prostitutes either, of either sex (!) ... haha!!
Just had to sit back, soak up the atmosphere, smell the flowers and drink quality ale, amongst a very lively, intelligent, international crowd of erudite, beautiful people. Most were quite well-dressed, but London is hugely diverse, so I won't judge!

Life sucks sometimes! Nothing like Lat Am. I had even had to put up with a CLEAN glass, (!) and toilet roll and hot water AND liquid soap AND moisturiser AND vortex Hand-dryers in the amenities. Never seen in Vene-Cuba anymore except in Government offices. Maybe a few years back, but not now! Disgustingly decadent! I immediately wished to start my own Bolivarian Revolution and drag everybody down into the gutter.
The bastards! How dare they be so happy and content!
Imagine! No street kids harrassing you! No crack addict beggars! No dodgy 'secret' police! No drug pushers! No-one making assumptions because of your skin colour/clothes! Ridiculous!

    just civilisation!

God. Things have really gone down-heel in North London!

Not even a scary gunshot from a neighbouring street! No fear walking the few streets back to my apartment! The street lights were working!
    How shocking!
(I did feel a bit more comfortable when I saw a smashed bottle, although some ignorant fool was sweeping it into the gutter with his foot, the arsehole! His partner was even watching for traffic, limited to, and obeyed, at 20 mph in a residential area, the cow!)
Not even any need to hide my phone or money! Some crazy fools were even openly chatting on £5oo phones, in the street! Others even got drunk without fear of robbery/kidnapping. I even saw some rich people without armed bodyguards! Crazy, huh?

We could learn a lot from Vene-Cuba/Argentina!

    hahahahaha!
