Disclaimer & comment rulesYou know, in 1989 I had to buy my local telephone line after having to wait for availability several years. Then the telephone companies were privatized.
Aug 15th, 2014 - 05:26 am - Link - Report abuse 0Free market capitalism, with reasonable governmental regulation, really does work. Let's just hope it's not too late to dump the stupid Brazilian/Argentine/Japanese digital television standard the government chose some time ago...
A cheap phone link from the Falklands tp Punta Arenas or Santiago, would be god for friendship and business, too.
Aug 15th, 2014 - 05:32 am - Link - Report abuse 02- good idea but would depend on the phone company here which because of satellite links has to rounte calls via Europe first I think, but maybe they could be asked to relook as technology changes all the time.
Aug 15th, 2014 - 11:14 am - Link - Report abuse 0To call from abroad you must dial 56-(intnl. code for the country) and the regional code followed the desired phone numbre.
Aug 15th, 2014 - 07:09 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Local numbers from now on include 2 digits regional code and 7 digist number (excepte Metropolitan Región with 1 digit code + 8 digits number) totaling 9 digits.
This has been a great chage from those years whe the only state missmanaged telephone company took years to rent you a line with very bad service and very expensive too....Now we have a lot of companies competing for the market and with other similar services as cell pone, satellite pone, IP pones.....and the most important: you are the owner of your number so you can change the company service for free and keeping it, which means you don´t need to advise all your contacts a change of phone number.
As 1@ says, capitalism (market competition) works well whith Gvt. supervision. I miss the same in a lot of other services that must be changed......

Maybe, Think! But the trick about this is to keep the company profitable...not forcing them to do it or permanently making it depending ond subsidies...
