Why? Can't they source their own hibrid buses, why does our embassy feel the need to be getting involved with Chile's internal transport matters. Will the UK be being awarded the supply contract? Do we manufacture hibrid buses?

My view is that our embassy should be concentrating on matters of a diplomatic nature.

They are there to help shed the cost of the ludicrous bus blondie has arranged for London.

More sales for its’ manufacturer means lower prices for TfL.

Thankfully still no news about No Money Pepe’s “order” for battery only powered buses for trunk routes in Uruguay. I think the guy who was to put the money up “The Ferry King” has had one of his engineers look at the stupidity of what has been claimed by Pepe and found it, as usual, a load of bollocks.

The UK embassy offers “Prosperity Funds” in many countries. Local groups or businesses apply for the funding awards. So it is the local applicant that defines the project specifics (in this case the introduction of hybrid bus for Santiago) not the embassy. The embassy choose which projects to fund.

The UK embassy does also arrange workshops and introductions for UK businesses looking for business leads.

Diplomacy and trade go hand in hand.

    must be a joke, no?
and what are the records of the uk about this matter?
    these?:

“London air pollution 'worst in Europe'

Santiago's transit system is a world example of how NOT to plan a public bus system. Our beloved subway is falling behind and people are somewhat resigned to long uncomfortable commutes during rush times.

Chile had a plan to convert all it's busses and taxis over to run on clean gas from Argentina. We built a pipeline across the entire Andes, which was a marvel... ...then the Argentines shut off the gas.

@4. According to reports, EVERYTHING in argieland IS pollution. The buses belching black smoke. The GM agriculture. The railways. Maximo. La Campora. The electoral “system”. The effluent and sewage in the streets. The “villas”. The joke “economy”. The clinically obese, fat, greasy gits that try to excuse the “government”. Argieland has NO “government”. It has corrupt, criminal, larcenous, mendacious tosspots that are no better than the assholes that traded votes for food or money and pretended to “elect” them.

According to data, argieland has 1,073,518 square miles of territory with a density of 37.3 per square mile. Leaving aside potential comments about argies and density, which part of which square mile do the honest, intelligent, reasonable Argentines reside in?

Amazingly, argieland's level of air is the same as the UK's. In other words, the UK packs 13,870 people into every square mile of London or 661.9 for each square mile of the UK. Buenos Aires packs in 37,000 per square mile or 37.3 per square mile of argieland. Nevertheless, argieland's deaths from air pollution (250-400 per million) is the same as the UK's. Seems like argieland reckons that disposing of the corpses is cheaper than clean air.

    @4. Get your facts straight:

    1. That report is over 4 years old.
    2. It states that London's air pollution is among the worst in Europe not the worst. I think Milan has that honour and Rome is also worse.
    3. The report only covered cities in Western Europe, cities in Poland, Bulgaria etc are a hell of a lot worse.
    4. It was published in The Guardian and therefore has zero credibility.

It's just PR trying to pander to Chile in the hope they will lighten their view on the Falkland Islands. We do not need to be doing this, once the oil starts flowing these tin pot banana republics will be tripping over themselves to be nice to the Falkland Iskanders and get a slice of the action.

    And if they don't....fuck em!

There are lots of hybrid buses in London and the UK in general. I was on one recently. Very smooth, clean and comfortable. Here is an article from last year.

All part of the action being undertaken to actively reduce pollution. Unlike the inertia of Argentina in these matters.
The UK takes its environmental responsibility very seriously and is a global leader in the area. The UK is a major player in the fields of environmental research, development and manufacture. That is why the Chileans want UK involvement. Not too many experts in neighbouring countries I guess!

The most significant causes of air pollution in Buenos Aires stem from the high concentration of unregulated vehicle pollutants throughout the city during peak hour when it mixes with the emissions coming from the nearby power stations.
The main reason why NOx vehicle emissions are so high is because most vehicles in Buenos Aires are not installed with catalytic converters. The worst time for these types of emissions is during peak hour traffic times. http://www.world-weather-travellers-guide.com/causes-of-air-pollution.html
Deforestation and pollution are the main threats to Argentina's biodiversity and landscapes.
A census in 1914 revealed that Argentina had approximately 105 million ha of forest. Today, studies estimate a remaining 28 to 45 million ha. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), some 16,288,000 ha of Argentina’s forest cover have been lost between 1980 and 2000.
    http://www.world-weather-travellers-guide.com/causes-of-air-pollution.html
The heavily polluted Matanza-Riachuelo River Basin. This river (it’s actually more of an estuary), which meanders for 40 miles through Buenos Aires, has been heavily polluted for years by industrial waste, sewage, and everyday garbage. For the seven million people that live near or along the river that means dirty water, dirty air, and a number of health problems. The pollution in this river is not new for Argentina. For almost 200 years the government has struggled with keeping the river clean.
    http://www.world-weather-travellers-guide.com/causes-of-air-pollution.html
So it is not just a problem for developed countries like the UK and Chile.

Saying other people windows may need a clean, doesn't make yours any less dirty! At least some people are attempting a clean up.
Perhaps some posters on here should encourage the Argentine government to follow the excellent Chilean example. Local action helped bt British expertise, not the ''head-in-a-bucket / not-my-fault' approach of the Argentines....
    sad really...

    Uhmm... last time I checked:

    a) There is no Amazon rainforest in Argentina

    b) half of the world's oxygen is in fact not even produced in any forest on land:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phytoplankton

    c) a big chunk of forest oxygen is created in the TAIGA, which EUROPEANS have hewn to sawdust (pun intended)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phytoplankton

    d) Protecting Latin American rainforests is code word for “keeping Latin America underdeveloped”.

    @22 Mamarracho #2

“Protecting Latin American rainforests is code word for “keeping Latin America underdeveloped””. Latin America is underdeveloped because of its total lack of mature political leaders!

Argentina, for example, at the end of the nineteenth century and beginning of the twentieth century was one of the most prosperous countries of the world and yet it now it is a “basket case”. The only explanation for this is lack of political and economic ambitions and populist politics.
