Who on God's earth could see such a balls up of an economy in a role like that???
Shouldn't they show some ability to look after their own people before they can hope to be able to give some advice and guidance to others and have some credibility??? The madness of Latin American politics continues.....

Actually it is meaningless, just like when Argentina got a seat on the security council.

By the UN charter there has to be at least one representative from certain areas of the world, but they are powerless.

There are only 5 countries that have any real power on the security council and those are: USA, UK, France, Russia and China. Everyone else is invited along to vent their spleen, but have no power at all as any one of the big 5 can Veto any resolution that is put forwards.

The only people who think this means something are the desperate non-entity powers of 3rd world countries, who believe that sitting on the SC actually gives them power.

Like Argentina before them, Venezuela will cry and beg and put forwards its own agenda (whilst conveniently forgetting that they're meant to be representing the WHOLE of South America and Caribbean) and ignoring the ACTUAL problems facing the world, and they will be completely ignored by the other 19 members of the council, especially the big 5.

So this is just hot air to try and make the Venezuelan people feel important when they're not.

So, María Gabriela Chávez: socialist socialite, shady businesswoman, bon vivant, Pomeranian enthusiast, and occasional Instagram troll, will soon be checking out of the Venezuelan presidential mansion—which she has continued to inhabit illegally since her father’s death in early 2013?
María Gabriela has regularly appeared alongside Maduro in state media, and was ostentatiously supportive of his rule in public. In exchange, Maduro relegated himself to less lofty vice-presidential digs, allowing María Gabriela and her older sister Rosa Virginia (who, ironically, is actually married to Venezuela’s current vice president) to remain in the presidential palace with their families, where they continue to be lavishly maintained at public expense.
Over the past several months, María Gabriela has been plagued by persistent corruption scandals, accused of pocketing illicit income by overpricing Argentine rice imports at a time when food shortages are rampant in Venezuela. While the ruling party has brushed aside opposition calls for a formal investigation into the alleged corruption, the foreign posting may be a way of getting her out of the public eye, while simultaneously justifying state expenditures for her upkeep and possibly granting her either diplomatic or parliamentary immunity should it ever be required.....

    Just so you know.....

Generally diplomatic immunity only applies in the country you are sent to, not in the country sending you. Still, she is just one of thousands with a desperate need to prevent any change of governing party in Venezuela. The absolute power enjoyed by Hugo made his allies a bit lax when it came to hiding evidence of their crimes and now they must be prepared to lie, murder and bribe to prevent the opposition from gaining power.

“When Chavez last tried for a seat in 2006, the United States succeeded in torpedoing his campaign. This year, Washington has been mum.”

Let them sit in the UNSC. The World is pretty f_ed up as it is, the Chavistas know how to make things more fnnt at least. Benny hill theme would be a great background music for MG Chavez speeches.

Best thing is to defund the UN.

For those interested in learning more about the fragrant La Chávez, The Queen of Rice*....
“María Gabriela Chávez, the youngest daughter of the late Hugo Chávez’s first marriage, has been involved in Argentina’s latest corruption scandal ... Argentina’s prominent newspaper, Clarín, featured an article that tied Chávez’s daughter to Argentinean rice and corn exports to Venezuela, but at inflated “fair socialist” prices.”

“Maria Gabriela was accused of corruption last month over the importing of rice into the country through the Argentinian food company Bioart. According to the allegations, Maria Gabriela used her name and influence to give Bioart contracts to import rice into Venezuela at 80% above-market value. The scheme has cost Venezuela $11.3 million Euros since February of this year.”

    @14 Chicureo
I have enjoyed your 'Tales from The Grand Duchy of Fenwick' although I am sure the Queen of Rice would be considered a nouveau riche social climber by dear old Gloriana....
You may well enjoy this excellent and informative satirical piece of writing, The Exile of The Infanta by Audrey M. Dacosta here
    http://caracaschronicles.com/2014/08/28/the-exile-of-the-infanta/
I am sure many other readers here will enjoy it too. It is well-written with some great embedded links (most link to Spanish language sources, just so you know).

It is particularly apt, as it hints at some key issues:
    1) María Gabriela Chávez, who was 'La Consentida' of Hugo Chavez, sees this as another step on her 'rightful' path to the Presidency of Venzuela and eventually Empress of the Bolivarian Federation of South America. (yes, they actually believe this, those fanaticos!).
    2) Maduro wants her out of his house and out of the way as he feels she wield to much influence over certain factions in his administration and is seeking to usurp him. With her abroad he seeks to consolidate his power and undermine hers, possibly cutting her off and letting her 'hang in the wind' should it prove politically expedient. Probably by cooking up some plot alleging her to be a traitor to the revolution.
    3) She sees this as a way to gain international recognition before returning home to consolidate her power-base and undermine his, probably by cooking up some plot alleging him to be a traitor to the revolution.

Nepotism never used to be this complex, did it?
    *sigh*

    Loved it!
Only two modifications below being needed...
“[Her Excellency Mrs. President of the Argentine Nation, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner] had found it progressively harder to throw her lavish parties and to sustain her equally extravagant lifestyle after her [husband's] death. In the beginning, the restaurants lined up with exotic delicacies, expensive spirits, and fought for the honor of catering to her and her siblings. But now, few caterers even agreed to tend to her expensive needs, and some, in the most insulting way, refused service without prior payment.”

I have the third part of my story in the Falklands Mine Removal post still in the making, please kindly suggest any story pry lines you wish to introduce as your imagination fits nicely...

Glad to be of service. It is well known in Caracas that María Gabriela Chávez and family never pay their caterers on time, mostly never (!) as they feel they are above such trifling matters such as paying bills. (Anyone else know of anyone who has this attitude?) They seem to think they are entitled to this and businesses should serve their whims in the Glory of the Revolution. True.
I shall give it some thought re: storylines, but generally I'm quite spontaneous with that sort of thing. The creative fount being what it is.

Last year, Venezuela was the only country of 47 to vote against extending a U.N. Human Rights Council investigation into abuses committed during that country's civil war. On Thursday, Maduro criticized U.S. President Barack Obama's announcement that he will authorize attacks on the Islamic State group inside Syria and blamed Washington's support of Assad's foes for the emergence of the Islamic State militants.“They want to impose the strategy of chaos and fear,” Maduro said of the United States.
Diego Arria, who was Venezuela's ambassador the last time the country was on the Security Council, in 1992-93, said he fears grandstanding by the socialist government could still cause problems.“Venezuela on the Security Council will be a real obstacle to having a serious conversation,” said Arria, who lives in New York and is urging governments to block Venezuela's election. “It will waste a lot of people's time and become like a theater for radical groups.”

    ----------------
On to more pertinent matters; Serious concern over a potential Venezuelan default:
Prices of Venezuelan bonds bounced Tuesday, a day after investors punished the debt on concerns over the government's ability to pay external liabilities as President Nicolás Maduro's administration deals with a severe shortage of dollars.

Venezuela's benchmark 2027 bond traded at 71 cents on the dollar, slightly higher up from the six-month low hit on Monday, according to brokerage Caracas Capital Markets. The yields on some bonds of state energy giant Petróleos de Venezuela SA, or PdVSA, maturing over the next few years still hovered around 20% Tuesday, traders said.

Monday's selloff, which followed last week's decline, came after Harvard professor and former Venezuelan Planning Minister Ricardo Hausmann called for the country to default on its Wall Street creditors in an article online that has grabbed attention in Venezuela. Short position users quickly adopted the handle #EfectoHausmann, or “The Hausmann effect,” referring to Monday's market declines.
During 15 years at the helm, Venezuela's leftist government has paid its overseas bondholders, but it has held back on billions of dollars that private-sector companies—ranging from food importers to airlines—say they are owed. As a result, average Venezuelans have been grappling with severe shortages of everything from cooking oil to cancer medication and toothpaste—all of which require greenbacks for overseas purchases in this import-dependent country. Locals are clamoring to protect their savings from more than 60% inflation, turning to the black market—where one dollar fetches some 90 bolívares, more than 14 times the official fixed rate.

You can see the WSJ for more info and sources.
    Expect another rant from Maduro....

I expect your Mother is proud! (not!). I just hope your asked her permission before posting.
My post @20 is relevant because I am sure Maria Gobby Chavez (© islen 2014), will be 'gobbing off' about this as soon as she is through the UN doors.
    Not my favourite news source but the quoted author makes some good points;
“ Right now, president Nicolás Maduro is not living there because it is occupied by Chávez's daughters,” denounced Carlos Berrizbeitia, a National Assembly lawmaker. “There's not a single reason for the Chávez family to live there.”
Berrizbeitia highlighted that Venezuela's presidential residence has had an exorbitant budget since Chávez came to power. “Only on event management and catering agencies and general maintenance it cost the Treasury around $ 300,000 a month,” he said. “La Casona has a swimming pool, a gym, a movie theater, a bowling alley, a dance hall; and it is being used as a private club by the family of former president Chavez.”
Berrizbeitia added that Chavez's daughters are still flying on government airplanes and they use the presidential guard, an armed corp of 5,000 people in charge of the custody and protection of the President and his family.

    25.
The interesting thing about US-VZLA relations is someone is the two sides of it. kind of like Gaddafi's indirect services to Europe like stopping the inflow of migrants into Italy and suppporting with aid and oil many poor african countries. Venezuela has Petrocaribe and supports many Carribbean and Central american countries. Once they have no more venezuelan oil and money they are in for trouble.

Once the regime is gone the US will face increased instability in Central America like Africa shows after Gaddafi.

The question is why the Vzlan regime whent into these lenghts for so many years to the state of bankrupcy?? What was the strategical purpose of it as well as having a seat in the UNSC and so many other international ambitions ??

Although you still try to drag European immigration into a subject area that has nothing to do with the issue at hand. How sad!
However, your comments re: Gaddafi are embarrassingly outdated, (he is dead, Libya has changed), yet your comments regarding PetroCaribre are at least, partially informed.
“Venezuela has Petrocaribe and supports many Carribbean and Central american countries. Once they have no more venezuelan oil and money they are in for trouble. ”

    35. I dont know. It started off as a feminist- anti feminist rivalry on another thread. I did have a laugh on more than one occasion. But Obviously we come from different backgrounds, she comes from a very competitive environment where its all about looks, achievements and wealth.

Central American societies like Venezuela (even if they are now socialist) are very materialistic too.

So for me to come around and say things that most women are gold diggers, that she has a large backside, single and oldish and stuff like that must have being taken too seriously and touched a nerve. In Argentina you can kind of tease your way through it.

But yes, I noticed constantly that underline message of hers in her posts “Im from London, you are a just throwback conservative Argy of the 1950s. How can you know more than I do, how can you even suggest Im wrong?? This is the only and true way in which society should be ideally modeled” is always there.
