Argentine ambassador to the UK Alicia Castro and Argentina's National Library head Horacio Gonzalez took part in a conference held at the British Library last Friday in London to promote “cultural cooperation and dialogue” between the two countries.
Gonzalez gave a conference on William Henry Hudson, an “Argentine writer that wrote in English”, that was well received by the audience.
Among the listeners was Lord Lucius Falkland, MP and descendent of Anthony Cary, 5th Viscount Falkland. The British named the Malvinas Islands (Falklands) after him.
“We need to take into consideration our common cultural background, the thousands of British descendants that live in Argentina, to boost cooperation between the two National libraries,” said Castro.
British Library head Caroline Brazier accepted the proposal: “We know that as an institution we have a great responsibility to build a bond between the countries. We would love to do so with Argentina.”
Horacio Gonzalez has been Director of the Argentine National Library since 2005. An Argentine academic and essayist, he graduated in Sociology from the University of Buenos Aires and holds a Doctorate in Social Sciences from the University of São Paulo, Brazil. Since 1968, he has been teaching in different universities across the country and abroad.
He has published numerous books, essays and studies in philosophy, literature and history, including: Restos Pampeanos (1999); La crisálida, dialéctica y metamorfosis (2001); Retórica y Locura, para una teoría de la cultura argentina (2002).
