A comment I read on a local site here summed it up.

Great!, We have the satellite in orbit, now all we need are brakes for our trains!

How long before it hits something? And what argie 'claims' will it give rise to? At least if it's geostationary, it should be sitting over argieland. Three tons, eh? What can that destroy when it falls out of the sky?

@4 Well it was launched by Arianespace (French) and the leading equipment suppliers for it were Thales Alenia Space(French-Italian) and Airbus Defence and Space (multinational) so how much is actually Argentinian is anyone's guess.

How do the Argentines feel that the Ariane rocket was developed from the British Blue Streak launcher?

by the way, how many satellites do the British have up there .

The same way that the Blue Streak was developed directly from know-how of the V2 rocket, down to the liquid propellant.

It's no coincidence the US, UK, and USSR started toying with rockets at virtually the exact same time. That three countries separated by oceans would display such synchronicity of development in the exact same field is highly improbable. Of course the answer is they copied the Nazis 99% of the work.

    @5

Certainly more than anything Mexico has ever been able to scrap together.

    Something to be proud of.

They have entered the Space Age - not all countries have done that.

However, one asks , “ at what cost, monetarily, and in lieu of what Social Programs and Public Works?”

Before the Trolls jump on me, every country that ever launched satellites or put a man in orbit, has had that criticism levelled at them, the U.S., UK, India, USSR, China...

A satellite build and launch is expensive, let alone a Space Program.

To Argentina's credit - they havent really gone to the expense of a “Space Program”, regardless of what CFK calls it, with multiple launches and their own launch vehicles and launch facilities.

They have purchased prestige and a toehold on outer space, with one expensive satellite and rented launch technology.

Notrils is actually correct on this. This is Argentinas first static satellite, they have build other orbiting satellites over the years in conjunction with NASA and Arg businesses and Uni's. There first from the shuttle in 1998.

But that does beg the question, why is Ms President making such a show, deflection, deflection, deflection?

Take a metal dustbin, switch a radio on, put it inside and weld the lid on, you have a satellite.

Get someone to stick it on top of a rocket and put it into space for you.

Otherwise, it's still a noisy dustbin!

They don't have a space programme, they have just learned how to build advanced dustbins!

    No Snotty, no.

The first liquid fueled rocket design was Goddard's in the US, in 1926.

He developed it further for the US Government, during WW II.

Please don't try to taint US/UK achievements with cheap throwaway references to Nazi's.

That is an absolute whitewash of history. EVERYONE knows the US had absolutely NO rocketry of any relevance prior to Von Braun. In fact, US rocket “launches” were a complete and humiliating embarrassment before his intervention.

The US and UK did absolutely nothing and that is the fact. They just stole the technology. And it is telling that basically since that time the US and UK have made absolutely NO advances in the field.

Hey junior, we liberated a continent in ww11 and offered citizenships to Von Braun as well as to some of Europe's brightest minds. They accepted and became Americans. Call it stealing, but we offered them a much better life than they had under Hitler and his henchmen. They cam VOLUNTARILY. If you call it stealing, at least we stole FOR our country not FROM our country as is the norm here.

@5. I see. French and Italian then. White flags, crashed airliners, 'vehicles' with 1 forward gear and 5 reverse. Can you have a retrograde orbit for a geostationary satellite. What are the rules? If it moves, can we shoot it down?
@10. You must stop trying to bring your nazi orientation into everything. Ever heard of the Congreve rocket? British rocketry was available during the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812. In 1814, the rocket vessel HMS Erebus was the source of the “rockets' red glare” in The Star Spangled Banner.
@15. Did they launch any? Research only mentions 4 argie satellites. And 2 of those failed.
@21. Tronador doesn't even have a guidance system! Only “demonstrators” have been launched. “Look, we can fire something up into the sky”.
@30. Nostrum of Nowhere. Ever heard of Cape Canaveral or Woomera. Strange how the US were able to put so many people into orbit, develop the Space Shuttle, send men to the Moon. Meanwhile, the UK continued development. And now a British private company plans to send 'tourists' into space by 2015! Launched a monkey yet, or are you waiting for CFK to get better? Send Timerman. Nobody will care if the aliens get him. Why not go yourself? ALIEN ALERT!!! A murdering, genocidal race of aliens is trying to invade Earth. They conduct experiments on people. They have depraved sexual practices. They kill without thought. Their 'cattle' don't really taste like 'beef'. More like pork. 'People' disappear. Annihilate them!

Yesterday, LAS ALAS DE MI PATRIA flew low, very low, flush the waves and the snowy steppe in search of LOST SOVEREIGNTY.

Today, LAS ALAS DE MI PATRIA, FLY HIGH, VERY HIGH, TO36000 km. And observed them, permanently, our beautiful and beloved. With no one above us.

Those little 16.4 meters of Argentine design and engineering, give us the recovery of our sovereignty, not the total, lack the most desired and loved.

Soon, the ARSAT 2 met his brother, and the two brothers will observe our two little sisters lost in time and fog.

It's Malvinista Mysticism. The little sisters are the Falklands, cruelly torn from the breast of the Motherland by the dastardly Brits, etc, etc, etc. One of the brothers in this case seems to be the satellite. Not sure who the other one is. The other cheek of the ARSAT, maybe? In any event, this kind of stuff isn't directed at the reality- based community, so it can be quite hard to get your head round if you're a member of that.

I would just like to point out that this Argentine ARSAT thingymajig was launched from French Guiana on the northern tip of the South American continent.
French Guiana, or Guyane, is an Overseas Department of France. It is part of the EU. It even has the Euro as its currency. GDP per capita is close to US$20,000. They speak French too.

Why isn't Argentina screaming about this blatant colonialist evil?

You are an absolute douche, at a very Cristina Kirchner´s level (she and you would hang out quite well).

It´s a satellite built and designed by an Argentinian crew. I´m proud that after so many years of looting and spoiling, we still have the human resources to do that. If building a satellite was so easy as some of you smartasses here claim, everybody would have one of its own, and that´s not the case.

NOBODY can seriously claim this is a space-age kick off. NOBODY can seriously compare this episode to the man on the moon. Only trolls and psychos. And I´m not sure where you fall into.

This is a significant step, and I look forward for more cases, as well as for Argentina to develop its own indigenous rocket. But, as pointed, it does not change our lives, it does not stop corruption, it does not stop inflation, it does not stop insecurity. Spending in science is great, making an expensive show out of it (as it was done here) is not.

To sum up, and by answering one of your cheap shots here, in the event of it going down, I hope it´s right over your head.

    Regards.
