So much for people saying the vote wouldn't happen. Madrid's obstinance is only fuelling support for independence. The incompetence of the Spanish government is breath taking.

To get around 2 million people to partake in such a form of protest is amazing and show the support for Madrid to something other than ignore the problem. Because it isn't going away.

When 40% of an electorate turns out to say something then the governments involved need to sit up and take notice.

It also seems that 80% of those that did vote voted in favour of independence. Not hard to see why Madrid is so scared.

Not so sterile and useless that further legal action is being suggested.
The Spanish are running scared and should be kicked out of the EU.

The government in Madrid needs to clean itself up and get rid of the rest of the crooks before it has a go at Catalonia.

As for Justice Minister Rafael Catala who clearly sees NO justice for the Catalonians, does he really see that threatening further “legal” actions is going to smotthe the feathers down?

Typical Spanish idiot of the type TDC is infested with.

With 88 per cent of the votes counted, the turnout reached 2.04m. Officials estimated that the final result would show that at least 2.25m Catalans took part in the consultation. Catalonia has a population of 7.5m, of whom 5.4m are eligible to vote.

Whilst I know that 'things can change' and that countries split, I see little for Spain in having Spain divided.
In a world where even the largest nations are threatened by 'outside forces', to be a splitter rather than a lumper is a recipe for decline and fall.

    I don't know why I am thinking about this now but it made me laugh remembering it;
When I lived in Argentina and I asked one of my friends why their electricity and phones when out, when it rained, when it was windy, when it was hot, when it was cold, he said he didn't know but the Spanish and Italians built the network.
And for anyone who's ever been to Spain, the electricity goes out when it rains, when it is windy, etc etc
So I said why would you choose a countries that can't manage their own grids to manage yours?
    He couldn't answer.
    I laughed

Yeah right....if that applied to 80% of the voting population...ie. 5,4 million...
..then why did only 40% vote on the issue.....
I read about this article last night on the BBC website and it said it was organised by the Pro-Independence and the majority of the No voters didn't bother voting as they were not interested and it meant nothing...that would be the silent majority of 60%.....

Does this ring any bells.....The silent majority....??....55/45.....

The recent Scottish independence referendum was only legal because the UK government transferred various powers in 2013. The Spanish government could just as easily (well maybe not) transfer the same powers if they so wished. Clearly the Spanish government doesn't respect self-determination. In this case hiding behind legality is bullshit.

Further, the initial declarations of independence across South America were clearly not legal. Do you think that Argentina et al. should be transferred back to Spain?

You're example about the Isle of Man is actually quite flawed, it's likely in fact they could break ties with the UK without the permission of the UK government.

People that live in civilized countries don't understand how difficult it is to live well in the 3rd world. There's a reason they're lazy and apathetic. Think if you had to stop working every time it was hot, cold, rainy or windy outside!

I didn't work while I lived in Argentina but I did spend a lot of time on the internet and phone to the USA. It was extremely difficult to make appointments on time or have a set time to start or stop a project. Windy rainy hot or cold something was going to be out either electricity or internet. And if I had to get anywhere for gosh sakes there'd be some violent drumb beating tire burning protestors making it impossible.
I tell my friends visiting don't go if you must get home by a certain date. I got trapped in TDF for 3 days due to strikes and mechanical failures.
    Its a mess.

Poor Voice. Always moving the goalposts so he can be right.

The UK does have a documented constitution in part. It is just not a single document. The Magna Carta, the Bill of Rights, the Act of Settlement and the Parliament Acts are all documents and all part of the constitution.

Just because some parts are also convention doesn't mean that others aren't

Very sloppy for someone who is so pedantic. No stars for you.

As for the figures quoted by Mercopress. Preliminary at best. Again for someone who is so adept at using Google and being pedantic, you really should revisit those numbers.

So far the tally is 2.3 million voters out of the population of 7.5 million. That's more than 30% of the entire population. And voting will continue for another 2 weeks.

I don't know about you, but I've rarely seen nearly 30% of any country mobilise against the express wishes of a government.

But honestly, you couldn't care less either way. As long as you're in the middle of any conversation, you're happy.

As for “50% were in favour of Independence....” You must have missed the part where that said OPINION POLLS.

That wasn't a result of this vote. Idiot.

Let me just slap you down...slappity slap....
You want pedantic...well here it is.....

    Braizier argues:
“…The British constitution is written, but it is not codified into a single official document…Therefore the United Kingdom still lacks a codified constituion…”

Thomas Paine believed that the UK lacked a constitution, he stated in, Rights of Man The Complete Works of Thomas Paine, that the continual use of the word “constituion” in the English parliament shows there is none and there is merely a government without a constitution.

F.F. Ridley, in There is no British constitution: A Dangerous Case of The Emperor’s Clothes, argues:

“…British writers define the constituiton in a way which appears to give us one, even though there is no document to prove it… Constitutions have certain essential characteristics, none of them found in Britain.”

    Zip it Skip....zip it good.....;-)

BTW...I'm all for the Catalans getting Independence if that's what they want....but I'm not seeing the majority view through this Indyref....

Agreed Troy. You will notice how Voice conveniently forgets about the other part of his post. The one where he misread the article in his haste to comment.

    The article:
“Opinion polls show that as many as 80% of Catalans back voting on the issue of Catalonia's status, with about 50% in favor of full independence.”

    Voice:
“80% voted in favour of a referendum...1.6 million
50% were in favour of Independence....
    50% of 2 million is 1 million.......”

For some people, admitting they are wrong is just the hardest of things.

Now as to the rest. You will note that our dear Voice has become quite adept at moving the goalposts.

    Paul says:
“you know what a constitution is?”

    Voice replies:
“I know what a constitution is.....
It's one of those things the UK doesn't have....
It does not have a documented constitution....”

After I proved that wrong. He comes back talking about a CODIFIED constitution.

    See what he did there.

So the UK went from having NO constitution to having no DOCUMENTED constitution to having no CODIFIED constitution.

I reread my post #29 and nowhere did I say that it had a CODIFIED constitution. I also never said it was documented in a SINGLE document.

What is even more farcical is that Voice actually attempts to argue both sides. He uses Braizier who says there is a constitution and then uses Paine and Ridley to say there isn't a constitution.

I'm sure logical gymnastics work on less intelligent people, but poor Voice just can't fathom that I am more intelligent than he is. I'm probably more arrogant as well, though that is not the point. But what he does beat me in is shouldering an inferiority complex. I just can't get anywhere near that.

Voice, feel free to debate the meaning of the word constitution for as long as you like. I'm happy that yet AGAIN I've made you look like the fool you so desperately attempt to hide.

My work here is done. Slappity slap indeed.

Let’s not forget this referendum has been declared illegal from our constitutional court because it was the process is not within our constitution . To allow such as referendum it would be necessary to change our constitution and to do that, it will need a formal agreement on the changes between all the political parties with Senatorial seats.
If you want to become independent fine , but follow the rules of the game .

If people don't feel the constitution represents their interests any more, or that certain laws should be repealed, then surely they have the right to protest and demand change?

Throughout the world laws are updated, repealed, new ones are invoked. Sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. It is an ongoing process.

As I said earlier I spent a lot of time in Barcelona and the surrounding areas. When I first started going there I didn't even know what Catalan was and cared even less.
Boy did I find out what is was and why I should care when I started dating one!
My overall impression is the Catalans hate the Spanish, don't consider themselves Spanish since they think they are inferior, lazy, corrupt and stupid.
Although I do not agree with Balkanization in general, because where does it stop, the Catalans are getting a raw deal, they should at least be autonomous and keep their own tax revenue with a little Federal Sharing.
Spain has always been the maids of the northerners, that's been the way for 100s of years, for a very brief period they were doing well but it looks like they're heading back to the way it has always been.

Last time you tried that you changed a couple of my words to make it look like they were wrong but they weren't when I found the original post.

indeep people have the right to protest for changes as long as they are within the law and the Within the law and the constitution , however let’s not forget we (Spanish) are the only culprits for the situation of the country.
With our votes and our support to PPSOE , we have allowed the country to become what it is now , a flipping mess. I hate to say this but the situation is far too similar to 1936. Failed Bipartidism, the Catalonians adding political tension and radical parties ( Podemos) getting momentum .
    @47 Yankeeboy
So you dated a Catalonian? And your overall impression is the Catalans hate the Spanish, don't consider themselves Spanish since they think they are inferior, lazy, corrupt and stupid.

Several years ago I spent a month in Valencia and visited Barcelona a few times. I did note that the people in both cities were intensely proud of their regional culture and languages. I must say that both places were absolutely stunning and the all the people I met were lovely. Is it correct to say Valenciano is a dialect whilst Catalan is a seperate laguage? (It is nearly 20 years since I was there!)

oh, are you a spanish 'mole' like 'el topo' or like the English beauty spot/mole, 'el lunar' or a saucy Mexican Mole Poblano?

    @53 yankeeboy.

That is exactly the point you have no idea what I am talking about. if you dont know about a subject better to keep your mouth close dont you think? ...Let me share with you a piece of information. Catalonia during the 80’s /90’s was ( and still is more or less) dominated by a left wing Radical Independent Party ( Esquerra Republicana) and for more than 20 years doctrinated the local population about how bad Spain was .As a consequence you have today a quite large of the population in Catalonia thinking the same way your date does.

    @55 Ilsen

Good question. We have only one official language (Castilian) and i however in some historic regions Galician ,Euskara ,Aranes, Catalonian, Valencian and Balearic Is accepted as official too. Basically if you are in Basque Region, Catalonia, Valencia etc you are entitled to use both languages on any legal / formal procedure you make. Reality it doesn’t happen and you are bullied for using Castilian .Fact.

It is not clear if Valencian is a dialect or not to be honest. Depending to whom you ask you will have an answer, Languages in Spain are used as political tools and it can be a prickly subject.

I´m surely oversimplifying it but ... if catalonians want to decide whether they want to remain as part of Spain or being an independent country, why not letting them decide?

If they want to stay, good for them.
If they want to leave, make sure it´s going to be a productive departure with friendly and mutually beneficial ties for both Spain and Catalonia. Also, make sure that those in Catalonia who want to remain Spaniard and part of the EU can do that.

The UK recently proved that a civil election can be held. why not following that example?

If not How can you provide an honest and fair opinion about a subject which firstly ,your judgment is clouded and partial thanks to your Catalonian date and secondly you have no direct first-hand information because you don’t speak Spanish properly and you haven’t been living in the country.

If you do or you have , I am surprised honestly

FYI Queen Elizabeth 2 is not the queen of the Isle of Man, but the Lord of Mann. So she is its ruler, but as it has it's own parliament making it's own laws it doesn't have to ask for independence.

The Isle of Man has its own parliament, The Tynwald (the world's oldest parliament) therefore it cannot be a colony.

Until a few years ago the Isle of Man (which is not in the EU), had its own death penalty and the birch which had been long before outlawed in the UK.

Because the IOM wanted agreements to trade with the EU, it had to give these laws up.

Go to the Isle of Man and tell the Manx G that they are a colony of the UK....and please put their response on you tube so we can all have a laugh at you.

The discontent in Catalonia will rumble on-best give them a referendum like the UK did with Scotland-then if they vote no to independence Spain will be spared a faster downward spiral, as they sponge off Catalonia.
