Absoluetely jolly good show, that's if he actually did it. Can any FALKLANDER confirm that he did it? He must have permission to do it. I expect the FALKLANDERS cheered him rather than stoning him.

Good effort. He must be pleased that he was allowed to do this without any hindrances, or being stoned by 20 years old war veterans.
Are there not any suitably spaced rocks off the coast of Argentina? Surely there are some islands in TDF he could swim between?
Perhaps he is just another Argentine Anglophile, desperate to touch anything British? No?

Has anyone checked his number plates for possible insults?
Should the UK ambassador to the UK demand an apology from the company that was filming this?
And then bang on about it for a few months until the world starts laughing with ridicule?
    We should be told.

Finally a Sports section in MercoPress...
Some small remarks to the article and comments though..:

    1) Why does MercoPress, after having copied textually this TELAM story...,feel the need to cut short the following paragraph...:
“The team then sailed in the Mago del Sur to Puerto Estanley.......”
    That continues...:
“.......................... where we visited the battle sites together with some Argie Veterans we had met earlier...
To be there... with the real protagonists... instead of a tourist guide is an unique experience”, he told Telam...

It demonstrates without doubt that he is a supine paid stooge whose views leave nasty stains on the web pages that they occupy. Not worth a fig…

The war lasted less than two months and only 300 ppl died on the islands, that to be fair is just a skirmish and 32 years have gone by. I dont want to be disrespectful or anything n¡but the fact is, its not exactly WWII or the Vietnam war we are talking about... You need to get over it.

Its becoming an industry of sensationalism and feelings.
These idiots are off for a picture and an article. Do you think that going to run a marathon or playing rugby is going to make the islanders change their mind about sovereignty and all that stuff??

OK, if you say so. I thought it was a story about someone completing a personal challenge with no political motive.
So he was just another whinging Argie making a statement about “our precious Malvinas” by going for a swim.
I take it he will be given a State reception for the Malvinas cause.

Thank you for pointing out my error in believing that their must be one honest Argentinian, So they must all be chauvinistic liars. I will keep this in mind if I hear anything good about an Argentinian.

He can certainly do any sport or activity like this one in Argentina.. Why would you do this in the islands, why not swim the Magallan sound ??
Hence it is political kind off but mostly self promotional...

I dont get what they are trying to prove with these silly “emotional crusades” Do US citizens go to Vietnam to do this stuff, do Russians go to say Afghanistan ??

If you want to change or make a difference in diplomatic terms the place to do it is in obsessed Argentina, not the islands themselves.
What are you going to do another marathon??

I have being reading post here for over a year...I think you should just leave the islanders alone and stop being a nuisance.

    Oye, Cabeza -

You look at this as both political and irreverent, and that is of course your subjective and personal view.

The article states that this was a sport accomplishment, which the swimmer -athlete , which I assure you at age 53 Sr. Barletti certainly is, first trained for by swimming the Strait of Gibraltar.

The fact that it is a SPORT accomplishment first, and that the Sportsman is so gracious in his comments about his crew, equipment, and surroundings, does not diminish his accomplishment. In fact it qualifies it, as well as his secondary act of respect for those lost in the 1982 battle.

If you read the positive accolades stated by those members here, which method would you say is the more successful one in the islands ? That of direct, hostile confrontation, or that event so well received by both sides as illustrated by Sr. Barletti ?

According to it, any Argentinean taking any kind of personal action to correct the historic wrong of some Argentinean Islands, just some 190 miles off the rest of our territory, stolen by some Engrish Pirates in 1833 MUST be a dishonest, chauvinistic lying whiner...

    26. Its just swimming, like one guy said here. I can swim do you know. Do you take seriously everything they tell you in the media??

My opinion and that of any pick up artist is that all these actions i.e emotional crusades come down to obsessive, desperate and needy actions from the Argentine side. From assaulting tourist on cruisers to this, it comes across as obsessive, desperate and needy, that is what you ultimately transmit.

Now that he could swim across the Uruguay River, the Parana River, the straight of Magellan that is a fact, not my opinion. Why Gibraltar and Falklands?? It is political.
Just read “Think” between lines. Its not about the islands, its seems to be about the people that live there.

The problem is not what they do in their own personal lives, the problem is that THEY DO THESE THINGS IN THE NAME OF US ALL.

Then no suprise you I have come across islanders who ware unforgivebly rude and self centered to me. No I dont care about you nor I think about you from I get up till I go to bed... Who teh hell do you thik you are?? Well they think I'm like “Think”. And from where they get the idea??? From idiots like Barletti.

I take it you mean lowlander and sassenach as snide pejorative terms, which fits your personality to a “T”. You seem to live in a twilight world.
As to “According to it, any Argentinean taking any kind of personal action to correct the historic wrong of some Argentinean Islands, just some 190 miles off the rest of our territory, stolen by some Engrish Pirates in 1833 MUST be a dishonest, chauvinistic lying whiner...”
The answer is in the affirmative.

Where in your imagination do you get the idea that the islands belong to Argentina. The usual claptrap about 1833 which has been debunked time and time again. It's like a child sticking his hands over his ears and shouting I don't want to hear. I want it, I want it ad nauseam
I was prepared to believe that this swim was a personal challenge , unrelated to politics . If not, then he should have swum all the way back over the poisoned sea,to the poisoned land in the west to a heroes welcome, having contributed nothing to your forlorn cause.

No, he was NOT IN ARGENTINA.

Getting excited about a stunt performed by some Argie in a wetsuit is rather pathetic alongside the heroic exploits remembered in the excellent Chilean museum on the Straights of Magellan at Punta Arenas.
On my recent visit I explored Magellans tiny ship and marvelled at it, what a feat he performed. Alongside a replica of The Beagle is being constructed. The ship that carried a man who changed scientific thinking and put religion in its rightful place as a load of useless mumbo jumbo. Alongside,Alongside there is a replica of Shackletons James Caird the converted lifeboat in which he made the 800 mile epic lifesaving journey from Elephant Island to South Georgia. Again this was a massive real achievement, not a political stunt by a nation drowning in its own pathetic nationalism.
They even had a replica of El Think preserved in Aspic :-)))))
    http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Museo_Nao_Victoria#/image/File:Museo_Nao_Victoria_Visitante_vestido_de_soldado_espa%C3%B1ol.JPG
Its all very well trying to appear magnanimous about some pathetic Argie stunt, but its nothing compared to the epic feat of the 75 mile Royal Marine Commandos' yomp from San Carlos towards Port Stanley carrying 70lbs of kit recreated recently. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Museo_Nao_Victoria#/image/File:Museo_Nao_Victoria_Visitante_vestido_de_soldado_espa%C3%B1ol.JPG
In it original form it resulted in a resounding defeat of the fascist Argie invaders from which they have never recovered, and thats something to really celebrate!

Oh I feel so popular. Jealous much?

Ok so the Grey Cup. Nope never heard of it. I freely admit what I don't know. Unlike others that pretend to know it all! What is the Aussie Rules version? Bet no one knows.

As for Starbucks. Bahahahaha makes sense that Voice drinks that crap. A total business failure in Oz. But I'm at the Museum of Vancouver now. With wifi obviously. Tell me what you want a pic of Voice. What's that? I have a receipt for here? Ooh how ever will Voice make that appear fake? I mean it has a date, a time only 10 mins ago and.... ooh what's this? Student admission.

Voice and Think. Both 5 letters. Same as LOSER. Try again folks.

Normally I am rubbish at this sort of thing but ( deep breath ) here goes:-

You are right, it is just swimming but he did it without the fanfare, without the blessing from TMBOA or Gollum. He just did it. No political motivation, no “our malvinas” speech afterwards.

You see ( and maybe I am getting muddled here ) maybe he was also demonstrating that Argentinians can do “normal” things in the Falklands without a political agenda.

Maybe he was also demonstrating that not all Argentines have been brain washed by TMBOA and her cronies.

Maybe, in his way, he was saying that relations could be “normal” between the peoples ( not politicians ) of the Falklands and Argentina.

Does that constitute a political agenda? I don't know. But maybe, just maybe this was the first small step?

Yep. Thanks for the idea for my name on here Voice. It works a treat. Skip is the shortest name so shouldn't create the confusion that my precious portmanteau created. Seems merging two distinct words into one proved beyond the ability for nearly every Argentine on here.

So yes. Skip came from you Voice. No weakness in admitting that. I have tried to tell you that it is a term of endearment. I'll happily own it. Conveys much more than the name Voice. But I can't help you on a new name.

As for coffee. Haha. Obviously never been to Melbourne. I don't feel any need to defend or validate my claim. The fact that Starbucks failed so abysmally is fact enough.

Anyway as usual you have moved the goalposts. I see you can't deny I'm in Vancouver.

It's better just to leave them alone. Its not his job to do any “first step” the obessesion must be solved in Argentina. Not in the islands.

I think Argentines by good or bad intentions by default end up giving the islanders far too much attention to there otherwise isolated boring lives. Its about what you ultimately transmit. And that is obsessive, desperate and needy on Argentina's side.

    Its the psychology, stupid!

    @59 Briton

Interesting indeed-but as most defence analysts do, they assume that if Argentina get a good jet fighter in numbers , that means game over with the Falklands as Britain is so far away.

This assumes no T45s or no Astute subs are sent anywhere near the Falklands. Also this assumes an invasion before the RAF gets V/STOL F35s.

To stop the UK reinforcing by air -the Argentines have to destroy MPA and Stanley runways plus any grass strips that a C17 and A400 can land on.

Which means they themselves can't base aircraft on the Islands.

They are going to have a hard job if their mainland airfields are attacked by Tomahawks (assuming Tornado GR4s cannot land at MPA and launch skyshadow strikes) and they will then need ships to supply the Falklands. If they can get past an Astute sub, goodluck, they are going to need it, and will have to chose landing beaches extremely carefully.

The MPA garrison is not going to be idle after being attacked, as there will be ground troops armed with ground to air missiles amongst other weapons who will disperse in the event of MPA being overwhelmed by Argentina and Argentine ground troops have got to be transported to the islands in the absence of star trek transporter beams. The Argentines will also have to eliminate Rapier batteries unless they use the 'pot luck' factor.

I do not rate highly the chances of advanced Argentine jet aircraft being able to eliminate all air defences in the Falklands and taking all the runways to use as a base, 'just like that.'

I wonder if these defence analysts actually take everything into account?

“It is little wonder the British are worried, because, given the savage defense (SIC) cuts of all governments that have reduced the armed forces to near impotence, the Argentineans could probably take over the Falklands if they had some more modern equipment,” he said. “In practical terms, the numbers of Argentinean aircraft would not matter a great deal, because the British couldn’t get there to defend the islands, anyway.”
“analyst Haris Khan of the Pakistan Military Consortium” No conflict of interest there then.

So the Pakis want to be involved then? Good.

We can shoot Paki pilots out of the skies over Falklands just as easily as the argie pilots, T45’s anybody?

I just love how cretins like the Pakis think they have an edge over the Brits, as if.

    They are all forgetting a number of important FACTS;
    1) the argies have NO battle hardened pilots at all;

    2) the Pakis don’t make the planes, the Chin do: OH, THEY DON’T EITHER, DO THEY?

The Russians have to provide the Chin with engines and they can squash the deal in favour of original Russian equipment, but would they allow TMBOA access to their planes knowing that another embargo of Russian would result if an attack on the Falklands were made? Little Putin has already rowed back from the “we can ride out any embargo” to pleading to have the restrictions lifted.

This Paki “analyst” (ought to be analist) has never been involved in a fighting war against Britain involving combat aircraft, he is likely to have his arse handed to him on a plate just like the argies did.

If the argies are stupid enough to attack the islands again I really hope and expect that the mainland would be attacked by submarine based missiles. Complete destruction of the power generation, railways and major road intersections would soon bring the “pot bangers” out and the cravenly cowards of BsAs to their knees.

    @28:
“...the historic wrong of some Argentinean Islands, just some 190 miles off the rest of our territory, stolen by some Engrish Pirates in 1833...”

But that's *not* what happened. What really happened in 1833 was the recovery of British territory from Argentinian Pirates who were attempting to steal it. It's this act of theft that leads less scrupulous people of Argentina to push a fake claim of sovereignty over the Falklands, and slander the legitimate inhabitants of the Islands as “squatters” and “pirates”.

It's Argentina who committed the “historic wrong” by attempting to usurp British territory. That wrong was compounded by a second attempt involving the illegal invasion of the Falklands and the subjugation of the legitimate inhabitants. These facts are not disputable.

You really need to stop lying.

Even if it was a historic wrong (which it wasn't), on the scale of historic wrongs it's small potatoes indeed. It takes a peculiarly narcissistic culture to be still obsessing about it two centuries after it didn't happen.

A little harsh - I still believe that if the Malvinist groups within Argentina acknowledged the truth and stopped pushing their fake claim and its lies, it would be possible for Argentina and the UK to start a productive relationship.

I for one don't have anything against the Argentine people - just the poltical element that keeps greedily grabbing for the Falklands.

Without Argentina's antagonistic attitude towards the Falklands and the legitimate inhabitants, I'd say we could at least pursue friendly relations.

#86 We can have a good relationship now, based on 2 prerequisites.

    1) Argentina pay for anything they want up front in hard currency.
    2) UK keeps things discreet and don't rub things in the brainwashed masses noses.

UK is willing to do 2 but Argentina is unwilling to do 1. As a result only aid flows from UK to Argentina and it looks like that aid is drying up.

I think the usual £20 million annually is going to dry up very soon. The UK public have only recently learned that this was hidden in the EU Aid budget and are damned upset about it.
Easy win for 'Dave' Cameron. He wants to make Cuts. This one will be welcome by all except a few truculent Lefties who only seek to go 'against the grain' on anything.
