“The TWENTY year old vessels are also used by the Russians to supply their offshore rigs and oil industry. The Neftegaz class tugs can also be employed for salvage and pulling operations.”
    .
So that will be useful for the Argentine Submarine Corps, oops, I meant the whole Navy....
Laughable effort of a broke nation. I expect Chile is looking forward to buying a new T23, or even a T45... or three... lol!

    OK.
Note to all Naval Signal Officers around the world: Time to update the ship silhouette handbook section on the Argentine Navy. The old silhouette signatures were rusty overturned hulls.

The new silhouette signatures are rusty overturned hulls being towed by a red and white Russian tug...

It's possible Argentina will now be able to supply their own Antarctic Bases in the future, the first time in years, at least on the summer.
    A great step forward !

Now, just waiting for the navy yard to get Pablo CabanaBoy's “real icebreaker”, the Irizar, back into the water in a few years...

How's that coming along, Pablo ??

Hahahaha! And this article is based on $77 oil, now it's at 57!!

What did I say two months ago the price was going to and what would that mean for US oil!

All those years of drilling and destroying farmland, to sell the product at a LOSS!

Not very smart those yanks. Besides the fact they will re-addict their economy and consumers to CHEAP OIL, which will yet again cross them up in 10 years when oil surges again at around 2025-2027!

I am the first to admit I know very little as regards ships that ply the South Atlantic but isn't the bow a little low in the water for the huge swells in Antartica, every other wave you would be blind to what's in front. No doubt a mariner on here could shed some light on this.

@1. Just a slight correction for the article. They aren't twenty years old, they are THIRTY years old! Depending on which ones the Russians are selling, they were built between 1983-1987 in Poland.
@7. Wonder if Mr Singer could get the U.S. Navy to rendezvous and seize these boats?
@15. So now argieland is planning to engage in piracy. Wonder how they'll stand up to RAF Typhoons launching Maverick or Brimstone missiles. Brimstone would probably be best. Three missiles per hardpoint. Typhoons have 13 hardpoints. I reckon a Typhoon could be on the scene in 10 minutes if it goes supersonic.

As you say, it would indeed be silly. I don't suppose RAF Mount Pleasant would launch more than 2 Typhoons with a mix of weapons. Brimstones and air-to-air.
@17. According to figures I've found, it has cost more than US$650 million so far. That doesn't include the cost of leasing Russian icebreakers and helicopters.

A “real icebreaker ” would be needed to penetrate the ice shelf, as Pablo CabanaBoy pointed out on another thread.

@#8 “All those years of drilling and destroying farmland, to sell the product at a LOSS!”

In the U.S. - unlike most third world countries like rotting roadkill - the conservation of surface resources is strictly controlled during drilling and production. Typical wellhead spacing would be 1 mile with many horizontal well bores often being produced from a single site. The residual area required for pumping or flowing could be as small as a single acre or less. Wells are now sometimes undetectable in urban environments. When formations are exhausted the wells are plugged with cement and cutoff below plow depth and capped with a steel plate. All this by law and the surface is then returned to like condition of the adjoining area. Each state has adminstered reclamation funds spent in the 1990's and 2000's to eradicate traces of wells from previous booms.

Once again you demonstrate the range of your ignorance (limitless).

Farm and ranch operations coexist seamlessly. And the owners of the surface rights usually own the mineral rights and receive at least 1/8 of the value of the petroleum products sold. Accordingly, the small inconveniences that the landowners endure in comparison to the wealth that they share with the oil/gas companies is of no consequence. In fact the wealth is so great that some western states have no income tax and little property tax or sales tax. When the market prices reach low enough levels the companies simply shut the wells in and wait for higher prices. Money in the bank. The non governmental entities having absorbed all the risks and much of the reward - unlike rotting roadkill which is eviscerated by such downturns.

GCT, you are so willfully uninformed. Typical rotting roadkillian.

According to this, quoting Argentine MP Julio Cesar Martinez, these vessels are not capable of fulfilling the missions claimed for them.

    http://www.defesanet.com.br/ar/noticia/16802/Silencio-do-Kirchnerismo-aumenta-misterio-dos-super-rebocadores/

They are not polar ice-breakers, they are too slow for rescue missions, they don't carry fire-fighting equipment, they are heavy on fuel, they are obsolete and dangerous. What they are good for, apparently, is positioning and towing oil rigs.

    @45 Captain Poppy

A few years ago, Tobias (TTT, Giorgio or whatever he's calling himself now), claimed to be of native Amerindian heritage, hence his hatred of the Europeans (especially British) and north Americans (especially USA). I did point out that it was the Spanish that committed acts of genocide against his 'people', but he wouldn't hear a bad word said against them.

He then blew his claim of ethnicity out of the water only a few days later (because when you lie as often as he does it's difficult to keep them straight) when he was denouncing the native Amerindians who had the temerity to protest against his beloved governments treatment of them, such as murder. In fact, he made quite a few racist comments about them, but it was okay, because apparently the native Amerindians that are currently in Argentina (and those murdered in the war of the Desert) were NOT from Argentina, but from Chile.

Tobias, as you know, is also under the mistaken belief that criticising the government, or the country in ANY way is treason. He cannot understand (despite his self-proclaimed intellect) that in a democracy it is not only the right of the people to question and criticise the government and the country, but the DUTY of the people to do so.

No doubt he'll disappear soon, only to reappear as someone else. It's very telling about his own self-hatred that he tries to be ANYONE other than himself, hence the multiple 'personalities' that appear on this forum.

When I called him on it he went silent.

Make no mistake Tobias is of European stock. He hates Europeans because he hates himself.

He is a pathological liar, and a racist in the first order. One only needs to see his rants and rambles about Anglos. With regards to “criticizing the government”, he nor the Argentine government do not have a clue about democracy. They are even clueless when it comes to the medias role in a democracy. We may hate them at times, but the media is an important and integral part of democracies.

I agree, he will fade away and return with some new and obvious screen name.

Meanwhile, in today's La Tercera newspaper are two excellent articles (Spanish) about Chile increasing its financial support for increased investment in scientific research. Our navy is solely there for international cooperation.

    @63
Ignorant yes, possibly some kind of 'idiot savant', and in general a mis-guided individual.
Shame, with the right help, he might even contribute to society....
This board is his only contact with others... ho, hum...
ElaineB used to try to help him, which I admire, but ultimately a waste of her time, it would seem.

I admired her patience and understanding nature, but I think we ALL did him a disservice by letting him expound his views and indulging him in his rattling on.

Far better to have shut him out and have him review his behaviour - he might have become more pragmatic and learned how to modify his rhetoric so that he got along better with others or *gasp* listen to another point of view and if not agree, at least consider it.

At present, he makes sweeping pronouncements, based solely on what he can see from his basement window, or what slant the Peronist propaganda tells him to interpret from the Internet.

    A big Troll Fail IMO

to extrapolate..., as one does.. forgive me, but....
    .
“the failing, slanted twilight fell through his dusty basement window, as the sun set on Mendoza. Tobi continued to type, but to no avail.”
    ......................................
You do evoke a perfect analology of his reality, maybe there is a novel in you yet... or is it just me?

It seems it is RG policy to replace totally fucked with only moderately stuffed... love the fact that the leasing company didn't want their plane back...

“Aerolineas Argentinas will reportedly maintain the aircraft.”

I hope they have corned the world market for ‘Blu-tack’, they will need it when the airframe fails in flight.

Only ONE year younger than Tango 01!

These cretins really know how to waste money.
