China, Australia and possibly Thailand are planning to increase, replace or incorporate modern submarines to their fleets according to reports from Asia-Pacific countries. In the case of China they are expected to be nuclear-powered attack subs armed with ballistic missiles and should be operational by 2020. Read full article

@1. It will take 50 years for China to catch with the UK and US, the acknowledged world leaders. The Chinese base their subs on those of the Russians. Who produce crap anyway. Who remembers the Kursk and the shoddy equipment and crew that sank it?
Jan 07th, 2015 - 02:23 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The Japanese need to be building submarines (and a real military) for themselves, along with S. Korea, Taiwan, Philippines, etc. Without a force in the area to counter what the Chinese are building, they will eventually take whatever they want, and dominate the rest. The US can no longer be relied upon to restrain China, particularly under a government like its present one.

Jan 07th, 2015 - 05:49 pm - Link - Report abuse 0It will be much sooner than that as they have probably stolen the plans from the USA and the UK already.

I agree.
One word of caution about the capability of China's heavy industry.
Jan 07th, 2015 - 08:00 pm - Link - Report abuse 0They have the plans AND the engines for all the Russian supplied units for the Chin made fighters but guess what? After TEN years of intense effort and billions of dollars they can’t keep one from grenading, either on the test bed or in the airframe.
The present Chin subs are known as kettles [due to the very poor cooling water circuit design] and it is reported the US use them to train their upcoming sub-drivers by shadowing them wherever they go [without detection].
I dare say that in the decades to come they will improve but so will the US and UK subs and from a very big advantage at present.
It will make no difference what rockets they carry if every time they get into position either the US or UK sinks the sub before it can fire them.
Argentina hopes to improve their subs with sails nicked off the Liberturd and by adding CT scanners.

That is a secret plan of Maximus Prattus to impress TMBOA.
The sad thing is she WILL be impressed.
HA, HA, HA.
I would agree with the quality of Chinese engineering, It seems that every time I go into any supermarket or shop, there is a recall notice for all types of products with safety or manufacturing faults and they have all been made in China.
