    Don't trust the argies, Chile.

The Brits have had an 'Agreement of Perfect Peace' with the argies since 1850 but they now claim 'you forced us to sign' or 'we didn't know what we were signing' or some other equally fallacious comment, seeking to get out of their responsibilities.

Also, why the low height tunnel? Is it just cost or are the argies scared you will charge through the tunnel will all your heavy armour?

    As oif you would! :o)

Like the other agreements, the tunnel will never be built.

    Las Leñas Pass tunnel project

Some say Argentina may well use them for any future invasion,

    Would you trust CFKs intentions..

Well, sometimes these projects do finally get built. At the Santiago airport is a working model of the train tunnel project which would be a great benefit to our nation's economies. Knowing my Argentine brothers however makes me think it has little chance for completion.
As far as using the tunnels for invasion... Chilean beaches are already full of Argentine tourists sipping matte. In a real invasion, it would be a slaughter putting an Argentine TAM tank against one of ours...

There was a lot of negative muttering before the Channel Tunnel was built but it has been a success. I think if this ever happens it is a great idea.

I have always thought Chile should build a high speed train between Vina/Valpo and Santiago. A commuter line. I assume costs are prohibitive.

I thought Argentina was falling apart under the weight of a “default” caused by all-powerful Judge Thomas Griesa.
For a defaulting country, Argentina was chugging its way along pretty well by the end of 2014.
Not only that. It seems the country is working with neighbouring Chile to improve transportation between both countries, a great way to strengthen both economies.
    I am impressed.

Hard to compare the cooperation of the UK and France to what we have here. Years ago, Chile financed a natural gas line to cross the Andes for bringing Argentinian production to Santiago. All was secured by a treaty, which Argentina then failed to honor. Thousands of taxis and busses that had been converted, along with hundreds of thousands of other propane to natural gas conversions had to be converted back again. Our neighbors are very unreliable.

Too right golf. As a an Uruguayan electricity consumer I am paying on my bills for the electricity exported to Argentina which they have “forgotten” to pay for. The last time that our fossil fuel plants were fired up at Argentinas request was 11 months ago yett our UTE prices are still based on the parameters of fossil fuel costs despite the fact that hydro has been running at 100% capacity and the spill ways on the dams have been open for the past ten months to evacuate surplus wáter. Sure we got a Christmas “present” on our December bills. We were taxed 22% on the full bill and then got our Santa present. Allit was was an effort to keep annual inflation below 10% which triggers automatic wage increases and our present was less than the tax we pay monthly.
Today the gov fuel prices monopoly ANCAP informs us of a 5% decrease at the pump when their parameters are based on USD 110 for crude. At a last look crude prices were set to go down to below 50 dollars today.
Chirurceo Remember the bridge that was going to be built between BA and Colonia? Not only wasnt it built but Argentina blockaded the other bridges for four years. So much for Argentine promises and contracts which arent worth the spit used to seal an envelope

@1. Why do you only mention that one? How about the various 'agreements' between stupid Uruguay and scumland? Seen the Martin Garcia channel being dredged by argieland to 36 feet? But they dredged their own channel! ICJ action against Uruguay by scumland for building a pulp mill. On the basis of contamination caused by an argie village. Closure of international bridges by argie scum. Interference by scumland with Uruguayan trade. If Mujica wasn't such a wimp, he'd be telling scumland to start building its bomb shelters. Chile needs to build massive stocks of remote-detonated explosives into these 'projects'. And at the slightest sign of argie non-compliance, blow them apart. Preferably with tunnels full of argies. I don't know why Uruguay doesn't install heavy artillery all along its 'border' with scumland. In the event of a 'problem', there should be one warning. Then the artillery, conventional, rocket, mortars, missile-based, can open fire. Wiping the south bank of the River Plate and the west bank of the River Uruguay clear of the scum enemy. Shouldn't take too much to make the relevant area a no-go death zone.
@4. Stick with that thought. Slaughter!
@5. The Channel Tunnel will, shortly, have to be blown up. Can't allow any more scrounging migrants in. In the meantime, the UK refuses to contribute to 'saving' scrounging migrants at sea. As time progresses, the Royal Navy will be tasked with destroying migrant boats at sea. Want to live? Stay away from the UK.
@6. Spending money it doesn't have. But what does it matter? It won't pay.
@13. Instead of moaning, you need to understand that argieland HAS to be destroyed. Nowhere in south america is safe as long as argieland, venezuela, bolivia, ecuador and peru exist. Get out there and do what's necessary. If you don't fight, we won't come to help. We can't send everything but, how would you like to watch 200 RAF combat aircraft landing? And we'd still have 27 in the UK. Plus our additional 130 Hawks.

If a good news story about Argentina gets this amount of horse manure--see most postings above--could you imagine the day real bad news are published?
But don't blame them. They cannot withstand the thought of Argentina making its own decisions, cutting free of the IMF and standing tough to the vultures of the international finances. They cannot withstand the country having a good December, going in mass on holidays (inside and outside the country) and doing well in spite of being in a “technical default” created by a vulture-friendly NY judge.
On top of that, the Greeks are, in a few days, going to vote a government on a similar platform to that of the Kirchners, which is of course what Greece needs. That'll be it for Angela Merkel and the IMF.

In his delirious fantasies, Conqueror lost sight that he was commenting on a story speaking about a will to cooperate and get closer ties between two countries that not always kept the best possible relations.
He probably watches too many war video games and has lost sense of reality. Fortunately, our Latin American countries have drastically reduced the budgets of the armed forces and their political aspirations, and they no longer get to play war games.
Several other postings here gloss over the fact that the projected tunnels won't ever happen.
Get real, Conqueror. Real war is no game unless you watch it from far, on TV.

“They're also talking about giving free wi-fi in downtown BA. One would think they'd prioritize potable water and sewage lines into people's houses first”.

In a civilized country, yes. But in Argieland, as well as in Brazil, if you built sewage lines they would not be visible to the ignoramuses, who only value what they can see...even if they don't understand it. This line of political thinking, has actualy been brought to light by politicians seeking office...when asked if they would build sewers, they responded “what the hell for ? they are underground and no-one can see them”!

    @27 Henry,
regarding the drastic reduction of military budgets, in most of Latam it has not been the result of a choice to allocate resources to where they are most needed, but because the countries don't have the money and literally, have no choice. As to political aspirations, seems that is ALL they think about, that's why they are all so f*cked-up. An honest government, with the people's true interests at heart, is a long way off in Latam.

  • MagnusMaster

@28 Yes, it is true that ignoramuses only value what they can see, however there is another reason. Macri has ran out of money. There were two big upgrades to the sewage lines scheduled, one is done, but the second one is on hold because they are waiting for a loan, which won't be approved until the issue with the holdouts is settled. Free wifi is quicker and much cheaper, and will be ready by election time. Stuff you see is sometimes much cheaper than stuff you don't see.
Also, most politicians avoid infrastructure work because the politician in charge when the works end takes credit and the politician who actually did the work gets screwed. Most politicians lie and spend all their money on handouts and propaganda to keep the people dependent on them, and when they actually do infrastructure work, it is cheap work that takes less than a single term (four years) to do so they take credit. Some even make facades like North Korea for propaganda. CFK was caught doing this at least once, and I've heard Alfonsin and Menem did the same.

If wifi is “quicker and cheaper” why so many cities in the developed world are still sorely lacking of those networks where they are badly needed?
Damned if you do, damned if you don't, the Argentina government is an easy target because they are attempting to go where no government has gone before. Just one example: the Universal Allocation per Child--no one ever thought this to happen in Argentina.

Using Venezuela as an argument against the Argentina government is specious at best; Venezuela is mostly dependent on oil exports, so is now in a bind, as are oil-rich jurisdictions like the Canadian province of Alberta.
Argentina has a much more diversified economy, which was one of the goals of Nestor Kirchner and Cristina Fernández governments. Importing supplies such as toilet paper and car batteries as in Venezuela would be unheard of in Argentina.

.....to protect 'shoppers' ?? from what ? ....more like to protect the 'shops', from being ransacked by angry shoppers ...

    @30 Henry
”If wifi is “quicker and cheaper” why so many cities in the developed world are still sorely lacking of those networks where they are badly needed?“

WTF ?? most people who live in cities in the developed world, don't need access to 'free' wi-fi.....they have their own internet providers at their homes or businesses, not to mention 3G or 4G......why depend on government bs when they can pay for it and choose the provider that suits their needs. In BA it's just a political move to make the ignorant masses believe that CF is actually concerned with them.....doesn't take much to fool you guys and keep you happy, does it ?
As for ”Universal Allocation per Child”, maybe a novelty for Argentina, but nothing new in many other countries....call it what you want, still comes down to a government handout.....wouldn't the country be better off if the government incentivated the creation of jobs, enabling the people to support their underage children themselves, with a bit of dignity, instead of making them dependent on the State ??? Greater dependency on the State translates into more poverty.

There's nothing Rgs hate more than being made the laughingstock of the world:

Argentina is known for a few things: natural resources like iron ore and zinc, Madonna's portrayal of Eva Perón, government corruption. And since the country is having problems with the latter—in particular, crippling inflation that's caused the price of imports as a result because no one wants to do business with a place that can't (or won't) pay its bills—it's also having a problem keeping tampons in stock. Which is both bizarre, as far as things being out of stock go, and no bueno for its female residents.

Every store we stopped in this weekend we seemed to bump into that aisle. And while we both chuckled about smuggling them into Argentina, she is quite embarrassed of her homeland and what the Kirchner's turned it into. As are all the Argentine's who I know and they are the middle working class. Not the lazy ass trolls posting here expecting the government to be their source of their next hand out.

Argentina morphed into some type of a cult society. Funny as the elections get closer, politicians are saying...“I am not really a FVP”., or “Sciloi or Messi, it does not matter...I am independent”. They are distancing themselves to get elected. Will they drink their kool aid.

My friends that are left in the country are so depressed and have no idea what to do. There are no jobs and everything costs a lot of $. They all are moving to smaller and smaller apts farther and farther away from the capital.
