We saw a revenge cycle of killing in Northern Ireland, it gets no-one anywhere and just causes misery. This Jihad crisis is even worse. When I saw the headline ”Paris is the capital of the world”, I thought it would be demonstrable proof that Hollande needs to be in a padded cell. And I'm not sure that that still wouldn't be right. What should tell us something is that there was no gathering of 44 foreign leaders in London after the 7 July 2005 London bombings in which 52 victims died and about 700 were injured. 12 deaths and 11 injuries in Paris and a fifth of the world's leaders go there. PR anybody?

They are required to define what is news and what is entertainment. Unfortunately too many Americans are addicted to it......mostly the bible belt. I believe you know what that is.

The US State Department is required to present to Congress a set of country reports, with estimates on the numbers of terrorist organisations active in the world, and their membership. While the figures are for the most part rather vague (“several thousand”), etc, this is a reflection of the fact that nobody knows really.
There are however grounds for supposing that the State Department figures are more accurate than most, since they are accountable to Congress for what they produce, they have to justify the allocation of resources on some kind of rational basis, and they have the resources of the US government behind.
This makes them quite distinct from those who are pulling figures out of their buttocks for a mixture of psychological, ideological, and venal reasons.
The report lists 28 terror organisations that may be considered Islamic. Many of these groups are factions and offshoots of each other, which suggests that this is not a unified movement with a single objective, and is typical of the behaviour of all loony and fringe groups, which all hate each other guts and fragment continuously.
To put some numbers on the State Department analysis, I have done the following :
- where they give a number, I use the number
- where they give a range, I take the upper figure
- where they say several thousand, I put 10,000
- where they say several hundred, I put 1000
- where they say low or a few hundred, I put 500
- where they say unknown, I put the average of all of the above.
The number that comes out at the end is 150,000.
This is almost certainly a gross exaggeration. It does not mean either that all the 150,000 have a primary objective the imposition of a Muslim Caliphate on the West. Most of these groups have their origin in regional conflicts, and have objectives related to these conflicts.

Mentioned on here on a linked article how the British police will struggle to cope with a similar attack in the UK. It got dismissed and poo poo'd, it's not commonly known what kind of state the police is in in the UK, we concentrate more on the NHS here.
