Pope Francis, speaking of last week's deadly attacks by Islamist militants in Paris, has defended freedom of expression, but said it was wrong to provoke others by insulting their religion and that one could “expect” a reaction to such abuse. Read full article

I find the Pope's remark about punching someone who insults your mother as rather alarming.
He is set up as appointed by God to be His spokesman on Earth and to be infallible according to the R.C. creed.
If I remember my Bible correctly, did not Jesus say turn the other cheek and never resort to violence !
    A bit of a dichotomy here !!

If he's set up as appointed by God, why do they need the papal conclave? Let's face it, the Pope is the CEO of one of the biggest multinationals in the world. And he wears a dress. And, as an argie, what connection does he have to an Abrahamic religion?

If you replace “shouldn''t” where he says “can't” I think I understand what he means. If you don't have a sense of humor, if your culture does not accept the humor of satire, you will never understand what satire is. In a democracy, we are free to express satire. And unfortunately history shows freedom has paid a price.

Funny because the terrorist got exactly what they wanted from the liberal politically correct appeasers from the west already. The new Director ill spoke of Charlie Hebdo just days ago blaming it all on him, he apologized for drawing Mohammed again.
    http://www.nytimes.com/video/world/europe/100000003447217/charlie-hebdo-editors-explain-new-cover.html

Likewise very few papers and news agencies in the West dared to publish the cartoons. All while the Muslim word senses the western weakness and rages in violence and anger once more

So yes the terrorist managed to triumph over freedom of speech, the west retreats in cowardice and appeasement once more. Job done.

Channel 4 has your cool aid documentary of a couple of very dangerous “extreme angry confused right wing whites”. Enjoy that and fuck off

And remember girls HamasNisund's advice if you are raped by an “Asian” gang dont even scream because that is what the terrorist want, just look the other way and think about those nasty men you have seing in Channel 4 and it will end soon.

Sorry, I'm a little confused here. Am I supposed to be responding to “Ah ha! Churchill hated Muslims!” (Daily Mail) or “Shock! Horror! Churchill was nearly a Muslim!” (Telegraph)?

Pending further clarification, it also seems that once again there is no need to panic about the gross injustice meted out to plummy voiced loony right extremist and mentor of Anders Breivik, Paul Weston. It seems he was never jailed and his freedom of speech never called into question. Let's let those well-known leftard extremists the police explain it :

“Police Commissioner Simon Hayes responded to the media coverage on the Hampshire Police and Crime Commission website:

It has been wrongly suggested that Mr Weston was arrested for reciting passages written by Winston Churchill. I understand he was not welcome outside the Winchester Guildhall, the Police were called and he was asked to move on. I also understand that he was not prepared to move on and was arrested for this reason.

Members of the public are of course at liberty to debate issues of importance to them in private or public spaces. However, there must be a level of decorum and decency.

Hampshire Constabulary has an obligation to ensure action is taken if decency or safety is put at risk and, if there is any reason to suspect they have intervened unnecessary [sic], this will be investigated.

As far as I am aware, this is not so in this case. With the local and European elections coming up, it is important to register that there is a great deal of politically motivated spin going on at the moment which it [sic] is having a significant impact on local policing - both in terms of vital frontline rescourse [sic] and reputation.[33]”

Moderate conservatives such as myself are mostly quite happy at the police's propensity to “move people on” when they're deliberately trying to foment trouble. It's one of the practices that has prevented us becoming, e.g Argentina.

It's shocking though, isn't it? There was an excellent quote from Churchill in there too - “ the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog”.

I'm with Winston on this, myself. I think extremists are like crisps. They come in a bewildering variety of flavours, but they're all crisps in the end. The Smokey Bacons would have us believe there's nothing worse under the sun than the Cheese and Onions, and vice versa, but fundamentally they all need and deserve each other, they're little different, and they're all bad for you.

Have you seen this other appalling act of censorship? The Norwegian authorities, apparently, have been blocking the correspondence of Anders Breivik.

    http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-12-23/norwegian-jail-blocks-letters-from-mass-murderer-breivik/5984474

You remember Anders, I take it, he's the valiant warrior who shot down a few dozen unarmed teenage picnickers in order to save Norway from the EekAMuslim! invasion.

It seems poor old Anders has been having a terribly rough time of it in the Norwegian hellhole the disgusting lefty politically correct appeasers have consigned him to. In an act of “aggravated torture”, the authorities have refused to upgrade his PlayStation 2 to a PlayStation 3.

    http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-12-23/norwegian-jail-blocks-letters-from-mass-murderer-breivik/5984474

Of course I read the whole comment. Not the first time I've seen it either. It's pretty much the kind of attitude you'd expect from somebody who spent his formative years in the dusty corners of the British Empire more than a century ago. It has little relevance to the problems we face today. And I doubt very much Churchill would have been happy to find himself hijacked by the likes of Paul Weston and the Argentine Electrode Appreciation Society.

Nobody got arrested for quoting anything. Weston got arrested for refusing to move on when invited to do so by the police. Moving people on in order to prevent a disturbance is a police power that is of course most typically used against left wing protesters, since most protesters in the UK tend to be left wing. And so it has most often been used against students, strikers, anti-war protesters, etc, etc.

Reading between the lines, free speech hero Weston clearly set out to make a martyr of himself, and was met with the weary forbearance the police typically deploy in such situations. Those of a more hysterical disposition have interpreted this as another element in the collapse of civilisation, but it's no big deal really. All Weston had to do was set up his soapbox somewhere else.

Otherwise, I'm kind of surprised to find you complaining about steps to ban Islamic “hate preachers such as Anjem Choudary”. I'm not in favour of that, myself, I'm all in favour of letting assholes reveal themselves, whatever flavour of crisps they happen to represent.

Why do you lie ?? A Hampshire police spokesman said: 'A 50-year-old man from Dorset was arrested outside Winchester Guildhall at approximately 2.30pm on Saturday, April 26 after he failed to comply with a section 27 dispersal order

The dispersal order was issued following complaints from members of the public about the man's behaviour

He was further arrested on suspicion of religious/racial harassment. [after 40 minutes explination to the cops]

At about 3pm he was arrested. They searched him, put him in a police van and took him away.

So you have mass protests of the likes of Anjem Choudary and radical clerics while Weston gets arrested for quoting Churhill and Geert Wilders is persona non grata in the UK.

As a moderate conservative, I don't go in for all this PC stuff myself, but it's hard to take Weston's desperate bid for martyrdom and attention seriously. It would have been fun if they'd stuck him in a cell with Anjem Choudary, but you can't have everything. And at least they just stuck him in a van, not a Ford Falcon.

In any event, I reckon the Charlie Hebdo atrocity has pretty much put an end to excessive PC sensibility.

That is a fact, he was questioned for 40 minutes and then arrested. It wasnt please Sir move along, he explained himself and was then arrested on those grounds.

If you cant deal with facts then you are not a moderate conservative. You are a PC cunt and thats all there is to you. cant you see how pathetic you are on denial of titles and articles now?

    @55

He wasn't questioned for 40 minutes. He argued with the police for 40 minutes before they got fed up of him and stuck him in the van. Which was of course what he wanted all along.

That's a shame, but the police have got this funny idea they're supposed to maintain public order, and this applies to right wing nutjob attention seekers just as much as anybody else.

Well what ever I said 40 min explination. Obviously to explain something you need somebody come an ask you a question. Or not??

What does it matter what Weston wanted according to you??? The fact is he was further arrested on suspicion of religious/racial harassment

    Simple.

And he was never charged with anything.

Don't be silly. He was monumentally pissed off they wouldn't charge him. All he got for his trouble was a storm in a teacup.

As ever, all round the houses and back to the start again.

He'd like it believed he was arrested for quoting Churchill, but what he did was engineer an arrest for a public order offence. Some people are dumb enough to fall for it, mostly nuts who want to believe it.

Weston's moment of glorious martyrdom is over now, and he's back being a nut on the nut sites and squabbling with the other nuts on the extreme right. Western civilization remains safe for moderate conservatives. Move along here, nothing to see.

    “Well this a welcome development.

Might I just add that your credibility as an armed macho who isn't afraid of women and liberals would be enhanced if you didn't whine about being bullied by women and liberals every time somebody pours cold water on your fantastical posturings”

Not sure why you can't make fun of faith. After all, the Catholic Church used to kill people for lack of faith or just a divergence in opinion so they can probably handle a bit of lampooning.
