The Falkland Islands and its people want to be 'good neighbors, have trade links, cooperation agreements and closer relations with the southern cone of South America, but 'without losing our identity', said Falklands lawmakers to Punta Arenas Prensa Austral that was present at the celebrations last Saturday for the 250th anniversary of the first flying of the Union Flag in the Islands marking the beginning of British rule. Feb 06th, 2015 - 06:37 am - Link - Report abuse 0Stolen? If only there was some kind of International Court of Justice that Argentina could take its case to! Presumably though, if there was such a court and Argentina failed to bring its case there for the 70 years of the court's existence then we could safely assume that Argentina knew there had been no theft and acquiesced to British sovereignty?

It's not too late to stop this pathetic waste of your life. Consider this, you devote so much energy in pursuit of either subjugating a peaceful population or evicting them and stealing their homes. What's worse is that you've be duped into acting this way by your corrupt (as verified by international bodies) government as a means of distracting you from your nation's failing economy as evidenced by their failure to bring their complaint to the ICJ or its predecessor. This is made even more tragic by the fact that your nation, despite all its protestations, was established by a rebellion of European immigrants against European rule which subsequently went on to subjugate people and vast tracks of their ancestral land.
Marco- Why do you and those naive thicvkos you have as Govt leaders not try actually asking to talk to the people who live in and control the islands istead of a country 8000 miles away that has made it 100% clear to you for years that it does not run nor govern in the islands?

Yes, this news site is a perfect mirror of the Falklanders wishes of having good relations with the LA neighbours.
Feb 06th, 2015 - 09:31 am - Link - Report abuse 0It's a good thing MP exists though. That way it's easy to see what the Falklanders really are about...
Marcos, there is as much chance of the UK handing over the FI as you leaving the UK, so put a sock in it!
Feb 06th, 2015 - 10:24 am - Link - Report abuse 0Argentina already has not good, excellent relations and links with all of its neighbors in our region. That includes Malvinas, of course, part of our geography. You are the invaders and that is why they can say hi but they don't recognize you as the lawful owners. Besides, you still insist on your Britishness! Let us go and live there to see how British you remain. And don't say there are a few (exceptional) case as this is clearly not the rule.
Feb 06th, 2015 - 10:41 am - Link - Report abuse 0Lots of links with Chile, much respect with Brazil because of the Olympics, Columbian links are growing, groundswell of pro British sentiment across South America even among the upper echelons in Argentina. Top Gear episode gained us lots more friends as the knuckle dragging Peronistas were exposed.
Feb 06th, 2015 - 10:46 am - Link - Report abuse 0There are big trade opportunities awaiting whoever can supply the islands with all the materials required for the oil exploration business.
Feb 06th, 2015 - 10:49 am - Link - Report abuse 0Aberdeen has a lot of experience in sourcing the food and spares required on the rigs, so they can provide lots of useful information, but whoever gets the contracts for the supplies, be it in Puntas Arenas or elsewhere will be laughing all the way to the bank.
I suggested the other day on Facebook that the new administration in BA will need to make a leap of faith and talk to the Islanders. It's the only way to restore the cooperation over resources.
If they don't, then the Islanders will get rich, whilst Argentina gets poorer.
As a Chilean I'm ashamed of our pandering to Argentina and disloyalty to the Falkland Islanders. My people have a very short memory and affliction to stupidity.
Feb 06th, 2015 - 10:49 am - Link - Report abuse 0@1. Maybe. But London isn't looking forward to having 'good relations' with you. Skip has nailed it. Just give us an excuse and we'll nail you.
Feb 06th, 2015 - 10:49 am - Link - Report abuse 0@9. How would you get to know what the Falklanders are about? Ever been to the Islands and spoken to one? But try this for a thought. Given the way that the slimeballs from argieland, like you, comment when they get on here, what do you reckon ordinary Falklander might feel if argieland disappeared in radioactive flame?
@11 No, you are the invaders. And now, as you cant actually lawfully kill the indiginous Amerindians any longer, you have taken to starving their children to death.
Feb 06th, 2015 - 10:56 am - Link - Report abuse 0We just celebrated 250 years since we settled the Falkland Islands long before your nation even existed. It remains British even after your illegal war when we threw you out. Get used to it!
@14 By what I understand of history in your region, Chile has been crying that Argentina stole the Patagonia from Chile. I thing you almost went to war several times because if it. So, what is the diference in losing land be it in FI or Patagonia?

Feb 06th, 2015 - 12:10 pm - Link - Report abuse 0”Argentina already has not good, excellent relations and links with all of its neighbours in our region.”
Precisely, Argentina's relations with its neighbours are 'not good'. How could they be with such an appalling government running the place? Argentina is becoming a hated pariah even amoung its so-called Latin allies. Fear and contempt are not a good basis for a mature wholesome relationship.
“Besides, you still insist on your Britishness! Let us go and live there to see how British you remain.”
You forget that, for a few short weeks in 1982, Argentines did ‘go and live’ in the Falklands (illegally and in great numbers) and despite your best efforts to change the essential nature of the Islanders, you failed! The way you treated the Islanders and the animal like behaviour of some Argentines demonstrated why Argentines are still persona non grata in the Falklands and probably always will be.
Argentina's relationships with its neighbours is driven by convenience and a desire, on the part of the neighbours, to 'keep the peace'. So stop kidding yourself!
Marcos Alejandro is about to return the provinces Chaco, Formosa and Misiones to Paraguay, before Argentina is returned to Spain, who will then return all of Spanish America to the real owners, the indigenous people, ain't you?

You're missing the point, again.
Mainly, we are interested in our Falkland Islandness. Part of that, at the present time, is remaining a British Overseas Territory.
You can go and live in the Falklands. You can apply for any advertised job, and if there are no local qualified applicants, and you are the best applicant, you will be appointed. What more do you want? Seriously, I can't see what about this arrangement you want or expect us to change.
I'm a bit tired of your whingeing to be honest. Every single job that is now being done by people who have come from Chile or St Helena was also equally available to people from Argentina. Why are you not here? It's because you don't want to live here. It's your choice.
And you don't have any links or good relations with the Falklands; that is also your choice. But don't bring your non-existent relations with the mythical Malvinas into it; they don't exist.

Once again, you repeat the Malvinas Lie.

I'm asking you politely to please stop lying.

Feb 06th, 2015 - 01:40 pm - Link - Report abuse 0You are bit daft regarding the region's history. Chile gave up its claims over all of Eastern Patagonia as we were at war with Peru and Bolivia at the time. Prior to the Falklands war, Argentina came very close to invading Chile.

In an interview with The Independent, the former corporal accused France of arming Argentina as it “rattles the sabre” over the Falkland Islands...
Nonetheless, Mr Hookem went on to call for Britain to “renegotiate” its relationship with NATO to ensure it would assist the UK in any future conflict with Argentina over the Falkland Islands. “That’s something we are going to have to look at,” he said...
...his most passionate comments were reserved for the need to defend Britain’s remaining COLONIAL OUTPOSTS, as he repeatedly raised fears of Argentinian aggression in the South Atlantic...
His fondness for a bygone age extended to two other areas of defence policy. He questioned whether women should serve in combat roles....and, perhaps predictably, he said it would be “nice” to bring back mandatory national service.

Eighth Commandment “Thou shalt not steal”!
As golfcronie so eloquenty pointed out: “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbours”.
The Falklands are not yours, nor have they ever been.
The ICJ is the appropriate forum to resolve sovereignty disputes, if evidence of such exists.
The fact that your government is unwilling to take their claim to the appropriate venue is prima facie evidence that your claim is fake, therefore you are bearing false witness when you refer to British territory as stolen from you.
Of course, we both know that if Argentina loses such a case, they'd simply illegaly declare the decision null and void”, as they've done in the past.
rotting roadkill: Pay up.

But your people are voting with their feet. They are leaving for any job they can get abroad, many in Europe and America - the countries which you say are crashing.
The truth is that the signs of Argentina's failure are starting to show. When a country cannot import simple hygiene products to satisfy everyday needs, you know the rot has started.
It's all very well having a friend who can produce these products cheaply (like China) but when your own President insults them, or the bill has to be paid (and cannot) then they stop being your friends and want some other form of payment instead - such as land or natural resources.
In the meantime, it gets increasingly difficult to obtain those replacement parts from other countries. Machinery grinds to a halt, so do factories, or they have to make do with inefficient locally made products instead.
Take a look at Cuba as an example. Because they had no trade with the United States, they were forced to manufacture goods they could not buy from abroad and it's limited their ability to grow. They may be coming out of that shadow now, but it's taken its toll on them. For decades, all Cuban people dreamed of leaving Cuba to go to the United States. Many died in the process.
What Argentina is facing right now is the potential decline of your society to the point where the young have to make a serious choice. Leave the country or face a future with no job and little prospects.
I hope you are happy wiping your posterior with newspaper, because when the Chinese refuse to send over any more toilet paper - that's all you'll have.
