Feb 26th, 2015 - 05:15 am - Link - Report abuse 0Caused concern in Argentina did it? Well it would, wouldn't it? I mean they can't claim the 'whole' world supports them when things like this keep happening.
Feb 26th, 2015 - 07:51 am - Link - Report abuse 0Many Brazilian 'lawmakers' are beginning to realise that Argentina is an albatross hung around their necks. It's because of Argentina that trade with the EU is held up, something the struggling Brazilian economy desperately needs right now.
But I don't see the Falklands EVER becoming part of Mercosur. I mean why would anyone join this failing union? It is far more likely that the Falklands would join the Pacific Alliance, which hasn't been morphed into a political 'talkshop' by Argentina and Venezuela.
Oh and to the editor I think you made an error here in translation. You put I pretend to influence looking ahead, not into the past, said Maldaner
I think you meant intend not pretend.

Feb 26th, 2015 - 08:51 am - Link - Report abuse 0Good business (and fat profits) will always trump somebody elses 'sovereign love'.
”said Maldaner who went even further and suggested that maybe someday ”we can have the Falklands as part of Mercosur”,
Falklands as part pf Mercosur!!!!!!!
Well the Falklands could uesefully replace Argentina in the grouping, true to form, Argentina is incapable of being a team player and, instead, always puts self interest first and is an impediment to progress.
I read once that there was a saying in Brazil. We must be grateful for the night, because the politicians sleep. Well Brazil might just have found a sensible and decent politician in this man, nice to hear this positive, constructive approach. Is reason dawning on the political classes of South America?
Feb 26th, 2015 - 09:46 am - Link - Report abuse 0As far as I can see with the state of Brazil and the upcoming riots if the drivers actions are not stopped (by negotiation) then DumbAss Dilma will sinking to the level of TMBOA.
Feb 26th, 2015 - 11:01 am - Link - Report abuse 0Falklands can deal with them to their advantage without joining the 'form a circle' that Mercosur has become.
Kirchner will soon be gone, the Falkland Islands will still be there and still be British. What do the rest of South America do? Just carry on like always looking into the past, or do they look forward to a different way of doing things.
Feb 26th, 2015 - 11:31 am - Link - Report abuse 0This Brazilian politician realises that the reign of this idiotic and destructive woman is nearing an end and there is business to be done with a safe and democratic country on their doorstep.
I only suggest that the Falkland Islands take very particular care. It wouldn't be a bad idea to keep in mind words from a very old story Do not trust the horse, Trojans! Whatever it is, I fear the Greeks, even bringing gifts.
Feb 26th, 2015 - 12:06 pm - Link - Report abuse 0Don't be too keen to let Brazil in. Brazil has supported argieland since at least 1982. In fact, Brazil actually took physical part in the Falklands War when it forced a British Vulcan to land at Rio. And it stole the missiles on board.
Isn't it time for the FIG to set up and offshore arrival point? For example, passengers from the LAN flight could be flown to somewhere like Lively Island for extensive checks. In addition, suitable huts could be built on the Island where latams would have to reside whist in the Islands. Wherever they wanted to go on the main Islands, they could be searched before being boated across Choiseul Sound. No combat uniforms, argie flags or materials that could be used for daubing slogans permitted. Shades of Ellis Island.
I'm with others about discounting mercosur. Look what happened to Paraguay. I'm also doubtful about the Pacific Alliance. Why bother? French Guiana, Saint-Martin, Martinique, Reunion and Mayotte are all special member states of the European Union. Why can't the Falkland Islands occupy a similar position? In fact, don't the Falkland Islands already have that status? Are the Falkland Islands actually backed by the EU?

Argentina is finding out that attempting to control South America from a position of weakness is impossible.

The Falkland Island receive EU funding so I assume that is being 'backed up.'
Maldaner was recently in the Falklands on an official mission sponsored by the British embassy in Brazil and described his tour of the Islands and treatment received, as that 'given to a head of state'.
I doubt he will be treated like this in Argentina where no doubt he'll l be greeted by tyre burning, rock throwing morons for expressing his opinion.
“You can't make politics looking at the rear view mirror”, said Maldaner who insisted that he plans to influence policy so that Brazil changes its position and takes advantage of the trade opportunities and tourism openings of the Falklands.”
When trading, it's far better to get Pounds rather than Pesos.
@7 Brazil actually took physical part in the Falklands War when it forced a British Vulcan to land at Rio. And it stole the missiles on board.
Feb 26th, 2015 - 12:53 pm - Link - Report abuse 0No, the Vulcan suffered a broken refuelling probe and landed at Rio in the consequent emergency, with a live Shrike missile onboard, one that did not launch after firing at the Argie radar station by Port Stanley airport. The Brazilians did not force it to land, the Vulcan landed 'out of the blue' in ostensibly neutral territory. They permitted it to leave a few days later (it's said partly as the Pope was visiting soon and they didn't want him kissing the tarmac at Rio with a V-bomber in the background). They did take the missile. I have heard rumours that a USAF Hercules was sent to Rio to take the missile (it was a US Shrike anti-radar missile) after some strong diplomatic pressure from the US on the then Brazilian Junta.
But Brazil did lend some tracker aircraft to the Argies after the Argy Air Force retired its Neptunes due to fatigue.
so 1 brazilian lawmaker out of 700 said he wants closer ties with the islets, and THAT is big news for this shitty newspaper?
Feb 26th, 2015 - 03:36 pm - Link - Report abuse 0who the fuck cares?
no story.
the thing is brazil, like the rest of south america, will agree in isolating the islets increasingly.
you isleters, will have to import everything from england, even food.
and as you know, english food is not the best, eh?
Three-quarters of supermarket chickens carry food poisoning bug
Nearly one in five samples highly contaminated and none of major supermarkets met targets for reducing campylobacter

Bahahahahaha Argentina solves that problem by just not feeding the natives so their children can starve.

Brazil allows FI Flagged fishing vessel to enter its ports - they have done and continue to do so.
FACT2 We have established trading links with both Uruguay and Chile.
FACT3 - due to high prices some basic long shelf life foodstuffs are always going to be imported from England- because it is far cheaper and they are better quality!
FACT4 - We are an English speaking people - so we prefer prodcuts eb they tins of beans - bottle of beer - to be labelled in Englsih - so we buy them from England.
Its called choice.
Got it?
Oh Yes - Fact 5
Last year Brazil awarded Oil exploration Licences in Brazil to an oil company that also has licences in the Falklands area.

Feb 26th, 2015 - 06:03 pm - Link - Report abuse 0when it forced a British Vulcan to land at Rio.
No Brazil did not. Read On..... Black buck 6
on its return flight the aircraft was forced to divert to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil after its in-flight refuelling probe broke. One of the missiles it was carrying was ditched into the ocean to reduce drag, but the other remained stuck on the pylon and could not be released. Sensitive documents containing classified information were jettisoned into the sea via the crew hatch, and a Mayday signal was sent. The aircraft was cleared to land by Brazilian authorities with less than 2,000 lbs of fuel remaining, not enough to complete a circuit of the airport.
The aircraft was interned for nine days at Galeão Air Force Base, then the crew and aircraft were returned on 11 June, having been treated well by the authorities. However, the remaining Shrike missile was confiscated and never returned, and the Brazilian authorities returned the aircraft on condition that it would take no further part in the Falklands War.
It was common practice for neutral countries to impound aircraft and crews for the duration of conflicts. Sweden, Switzerland and the Irish Republic did this in WW2.

Mar 03rd, 2015 - 12:35 am - Link - Report abuse 0Brasil responded to a mayday message requesting permission to land from Squadron Leader Neil McDougall, after his successful run at the Argentine forces, destroying a Skyguard fire-control radar on the Falklands.
Refueling took a mere 220,000 gallons of fuel per sortie, per Vulcan !
This was SQL McDougall's second sortie at the Falklands, and the reason for the mayday was the fact that the in-flight refuelling probe broke. One of the missiles it was carrying was ditched into the ocean to reduce drag, but the other remained stuck on the pylon and could not be released.
At no time did Brasilian authorities force down this aircraft. The aircraft, and the crew were returned to the UK. The lone remaining missile was confiscated, and probably reverse engineered.
The details can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Black_Buck
Still an exciting read today.

Simple, Brazil could make money out of trade with the Falklands.
Why couldn't you work that one out?
