Falklands: Ambassador Castro refers ironically to Foreign Office summons

Saturday, April 11th 2015 - 06:45 UTC
Full article 99 comments

Argentine ambassador in London, Alicia Castro complained about being summoned to the Foreign Office over the Falklands/Malvinas Islands dispute revealing she asked the British official if it was “an expression of British humor or a political paradox”, since the UK has failed to comply with international law for the last five decades. ”The UK refuses to talk with Argentina, this is as if London would have refused to talk with the German Chancellor following the collapse of Nazism”.

    Godwins, I declare Godwins!!

But we DID talk to the Germans about Germany, so why won't Argentina talk to the Falkland Islanders about the Falkland Islands?

    I love it.

“...foreign minister Eduardo Zuain summoned British ambassador in Buenos Aires, John Freeman ”to demand explanations over the 'suggestive' silence from the British government...”

    Summoned for not saying anything.

    Bahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Argentina never shuts up about somethings, they've never learnt that sometimes you don't need to say anything.

    Alicia
    We're not on your continent.
It's not a further military build up (but so what if it was); it's just some refurbishment and updating. £180,000,000 over ten years is peanuts.
The UK would talk with you about it anytime you want if you allowed us to be represented. The UN resolution says “taking account of the Islanders' interests.” You know what they are already do you?
All countries spy on each other including yours and everybody knows it.
I'd say with your competence in diplomacy you'd be grateful for all the meetings you can get; whether by invitation or summons.

Talk to anyone but the islanders affected, says Argentina.
The islanders do NOT want to be colonised by a foreign power stuck in conquistidor mode. That should be crystal clear!
Britain & FI quite rightly do NOT trust your lying ways. Defence required very much so.
Argentina, the aggressor in 1982 and now. Denied then and now!

The British government talks to the Argentinean government all the time.

    And they have since 1982.

Not agreeing with the Argentinean government does not equate to not taking to.

I understand the analogy but as Hans points out it is a poor comparison. The Nazis thought they owned Alsace, invaded it, got kicked out and then replaced by a democratic government who we talk to - fine, I get that comparison. But the Germans no longer claim Alsace and if they did we wouldn't talk to them about it, or not unless the population of Alsace asked us to and certainly not without them present. So I simply don't understand the analogy.

You are reading too much into it...it was a simple analogy comparing a military dictatorship to the present democracy...

No, not struggling with the English Language, but I am struggling with Argentina's logic-so if you could help me with this I would be most grateful:

“The United Kingdom is increasing the militarization of the south of our continent”

The UK is not adding to the Rapier system, it is replacing it-so how can 'militarisation' be increased when this is a swap?

How can the addition of two Chinooks be an increase when previously two chinooks were withdrawn?

2-2=0+2=2 (i.e. there are not 3 Chinooks being sent ).

Alicia Castro's behaviour is just further evidence that the present Argentine government has no interest in solving the “dispute”. The aim is just to get up the Anglo nose for the benefit of the domestic audience, who seem to get a buzz out of that kind of thing. But every time it happens, in reality it's yet another nail in the coffin of Argentina's territorial ambitions in the British South Atlantic and Queen Elizabeth Land.

Let me dazzle you with my expertise, by adding one word increasing “capabilities”
The word swap does not necessarily mean an equal exchange, but merely an act of exchanging one thing for another....

One minus one banknote equals zero banknotes, but a five pound banknote exchanged for a one hundred pound banknote has an increased value....
I think, perhaps you are struggling with the English language....

Castro has no right to move in diplomatic circles. She is the spoilt child at the adult's dinner table, no manners and no idea. She is a guest in the U.K. and if she is summoned to explain her words and behaviour, she has to do so. She has no choice. She had no choice.

TTT, what are you going to do about a Canadian refusing to return to Argentina? Feeling powerless again?

I don't understand. What is this 'international law' with which the UK has been failing to comply for 50 years? If she's referring to those UN resolutions, does she not know that none of them are binding? And a UN resolution isn't 'international law' anyway.
She should be glad that the UK doesn't treat her place as a 'colony'. If it did, it would be a spanish colony. In which case, bearing in mind technological advances, we'd probably bomb it.
As for espionage, where's the problem? Argieland is an enemy. It's almost certain that, every day, there's a British fleet submarine cruising the argie coast intercepting everything. Emails, texts, phone calls, argie air force, army and navy coded transmissions. And it may be that the sub also 'gives' something back. Lovely computer viruses.
Why would Ambassador Freeman attempt to discredit the argie 'government'? The argie 'government' can't get credit anywhere. When will it pay its hundreds of billions of debt? Unlike argieland, the UK isn't 'strictly isolated'. Anyone noticed the number of countries in which the UK isn't welcome? We seem to go virtually everywhere. Argieland, on the other hand, only seems to go to other parts of SoAm. And other pariahs.
And why would London have talked to the German Chancellor following the collapse of Nazism? Especially as there wasn't one until 1949.

'Espionage involves a spy ring, government and company/firm or individual obtaining information considered secret or confidential without the permission of the holder of the information.' And if RAF aircraft flew back and forth across argieland, what could the argies do about it? Argieland doesn't have a single aircraft capable of interception. Anyone researching should note that argie Mirages were retired in 2013. In argieland, they were known as Daggers and, later, Fingers. Argieland lost 13 in '82. That's how 'good' they were.

This “tirade” by the former Argentine Airlines “trolly dolly” was broadcast on/during a radio show in Buenos Aires. Do we know what their listening audience is? She was clearly “preaching to the converted”!

Whilst, of course, it consisted of her usual inventions, it was more than usually offensive. The British Government should be considering making her “persona non grata” after this latest “payasada”

It's 33 years after the war. But in 1978, 33 years after WWII, Germany didn't still claim France and Belgium and Poland as its sovereign territory. Argentina still has dreams of a Argentiner Grossreich, however.

What part of negotiating has this excuse for an ambassador does she not understand. Britain has always said it would be happy to talk to Argentina regarding the Falklands so long as Argentina included the Falkland Islands and that sovereignty would not be discussed unless the Falkland Islanders wished to do so. The Falkland Islanders have made their wishes clearly known that they wish to remain British and until Argentina recognises and respects their wish as a people there will be no talks over the Falklands. How many times do we as Islanders have to spell out to Argentina We do not want to be a part of their Country. We already have everything we want and nothing Argentina has to offer us will change our minds. We offered to share the oil with you and you turned it down because you insist we do not exist so have no right to decide who has what. Well Madam we jolly well can decide right now who has what and it is certainly not looking good for your corrupt Country. The Falkland Islanders will exploit the wealth around them no matter what Argentina tries to do to stop them.

Why do you think that? According to your logic, someone else would have done it instead. Or does that only count for inventions?

I'm interested in your idea of how inventions are arrived at....do you think they are just floating around out there waiting for someone to harvest them? If any of our inventions could have been invented by anybody, then why weren't they? Are you all spending your time sitting around whingeing about the Anglos because you don't need stuff like medicine and technology, or because it's just easier to let someone else do all the hard work? My own theory is that too lazy and incompetent, and incapable, amount to the same thing. You think you could have invented the internet? Well, you didn't, and that's all that matters.

Why would Castro have any concern about this?

What is the UK gonna do?

Threaten Argentina with ”strained bilateral relations? LOL!

Threaten to cut her from capital markets? LOL!

Take her to the WTO over something? LOL!

Send some government paid lackeys to do a show in Argentina and cause trouble? LOL!

I'm afraid the diplomatic tookit of the UK towards Argentina is as useful as a sewing needle to drill for oil in the ocean.

The UK simply needs to do nothing. Only sit back and watch Argentina eat its own tail.
Argentina, under cristina, pressed the 'self-destruct button' svereal years ago.
The tele-novela of her so-called govt. and her 'cadenas nacional' are mere amusement. The Brits are smug in their power and rightuousness.
And there is nothing you can do. Tobi, you know you are impotent, that is why you are so angry.
The 'anglos' laugh at you, and you know it.
So funny to watch you squirm in your own shit.
Let's see some action from Cristina, not just words.

Obviously that's not what they are doing (nothing).

But anyway, I'm angry at the Anglo supremacism on display here (with nothing to back it up). As I have said a million times, if you all stopped your excessive insults on everything Argentine, I would vanish and never come back. The power has all along been in your hands, but alas you people can't control yourselves. No will power, no self-control, no rational thought, no equanimity.

You all can even criticize “CFK”. Just not Argentines for being genetically Argentine, or lying that Argentina is essentially the worst and most useless country and society in the history of this planet.

That is a mighty LOW bar to meet (just not lie and say we are the worst and trash us at every turn in every topic about everything).

And then puff!, i'd be gone.

If you guys can't meet that most miserably low of standards, then that speaks leagues about YOU, not me.

    4) “Argentina is a wasted space, full of self-pitying, ”it wasn't our fault. lt was the …………(fill in relevant country, who WAS really to blame for Argentina's woes) type of people.”

You Anglos are going to learn the hard way that you can't treat Argentina the way you do with your racist smugness. You think that just because your economies are stronger, your defence capabilities are better, your standards of living are higher, your crime rates lower, your GDPs higher and your education, health and transportation systems are better (I could go on but you get the picture), that makes you better than us. Well it doesn't.

And us “Anglos”(l'm only half-Anglo, btw)will treat that den of iniquity, that is Argentina just exactly as we like.
Argentina invites ridicule with the utterly ridiculous & foolish things that its people/government say & do.
Argentina has great resources, has great potential, but is a bankrupt, powerless, corrupt, impoverished 3rd world travesty of what it used to be.
The country hasn't changed from the year 1900.
You still have the minerals, farmland, hydro power etc.
So why the demise? lt can only be the mentality of the people.
lf they all think like you, nostrils, then l can understand it.

Look at this wonderful claque of 100% losers, responding to yet another impostor, in order to justify their Anglo-supremacism

You guys do know that Anglo culture also produces the least number of scientists and engineers (compared to German, French, Scandinavian, Chinese, Japanese, and Indian cultures), they also have the poorest rated cuisine, are by far according to all studies the most useless in language ability, are also the culture with the most legal criminal financial havens, are the culture with the most proven records of driving species to extinction... etc.

Sounds like you are actually inferior.

Alicia's job is to get up the nose of her host country as much as possible, for the benefit of CFK and those among the domestic population who respond to that kind of thing.

This of course would be an absolutely idiotic approach if your aim was actually to change the status quo, but if you're looking to perpetuate and inflame an unresolvable grievance, it's a good way to go, and with Castro, Filmus and Timerman, Argentina certainly has a dream team on the job.
